Wife Hannah Hatch 5
AKA: Hatch Turner Born: - Scituate, Massachusetts, USA Baptized: Died: April 13, 1771 - Middleboro, Plymouth County, Masschusetts, USA Buried:
Children
General Notes: Wife - Hannah Hatch
Hannah Hatch, Daughter of Samuel Hatch of Scituate, by his wife Mary Doty, was born on 15 or 16 February, 1681/2, and was married three times.
She married, first, Japhet Turner, of Scituate, but the date, of the marriage has not been found. Japhet Turner died before 23 January, 1710/11, when his inventory was taken, and left four children: Hannah, who married William Thomas; Jephet, who married Elidzabeth Morse; Israel, who married Abigail Holmes; Elizabeh who married John Pratt.
Hannah (Hatch) Turner married, second, on 9 July, 1719, Ebenezer Tinkham, of Middleborough, Massachusetts, as his secon wife. Ebenezer Tinkham died before 7 November, 1726, when Shubael Tinkham, his brother, appointed administrator.
Hannah (Hatch) Turner) Tinkham married, third, on 23 December, 1729, Capt. Ichabod Tupper, of Middleborouogh, who died in 1748, leaving children by a former wife.
Hannah Tupper, widow of Capt. Ichabod Tupper, died 13 April, 1771, in her 91st year, according to the record on her gravestone in the Nemasket Cemetery, at Middleborough.
No record of the marriage of Hannah Hatch to Japhet Turner has been found, and she was called Hannah Tinkham, in her father's will, made 13 June, 1728; but the widow Hannah Tupper, in her own will, dated 26 August, 1766, mentions "my daughter Elizabeth Pratt", also "my ten grandsons" and "my fifteen granddaughters", naming each of them. As these twenty five grandchildren of widow Hannah Tupper can be proved to have been the children of Japhet and Hannah Turner's four children, Hannah Thomas, Japhet Turner, Israel Turner and Elizabeth Pratt, it is evident that the first Japhet Turner's widow was the Hannah turner who married Ebenezer Tinkham and Capt. Ichabod Tupper.
Ebenezer Tinkham was the only Tinkham who had a wife Hannah in 1728, when Samuel Hatch mentioned a daughter Hannah Tinkham in his will, and we have shown that ebenezer married, for his second wife, Japhet turner's widow Hannah. Moreover the widow Hannah Tupper's age at death agrees closely with the birth date of Hannah Hatch. Is is evident, therefore, that Samuel Hatch's daughter Hannah and the widow Hannah Tupper were one and the same person.

The Observer (Hartland, N.B.) of 29th September 1926 reported Dora's and Bill's marriage as follows: The United Baptist Parsonage at Woodstock was the scene of a happy event on Wednesday afternoon, September 1st, when Dora Pearl Hatfield, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. A.A. Hatfield of Hartland, was united in marriage to William Allan Hayward, son of Mr. & Mrs. C.E. Hayward, also of Hartland, by Rev. E.B. MacLatchey, the single ring ceremony being used. The bride, who was unattended, was very becomingly attired in a dress of shell pink canton crepe with cream lace and largewhite hat. After the ceremony the happy coupleleft by auto for "Eagle's Nest Camp" on the Miramichi for a short honey moon. The bride and groom are very popular with a large circle of friends who unite in wishing them every happiness in their future life.
They lived in Upper Brighton with his parents when they were first married. On the 4th of January 1927, they moved to Juniper where he was employed with Flemming and Gibson Lumber Company. They moved back to his parents' house during the first week of September 1927, and in November 1928, they moved to what was then known as the Dr. MacIntosh house nearby. On the 14th of March, 1930, they moved to the Charlie Ebbett farm in the Parish of Simonds, and lived there for nine years. Theyleft the farm 8th November 1938, and moved to Clarence Rideout's house in Simonds, and in June 1939 moved into the Advent Christian Parsonage in Simonds which was vacant at the time. In the fall of 1940 they moved to the Burrell Hatfield house in Simonds, and in September 1944,they moved back to Upper Brighton to live with his mother who was widowed and had reached an age where she was unable to live alone. They lived there the remainder of their lives.
Dora died in the Woodstock General Hospital.

General Notes: Husband - William Allan Hayward
When he was a young man, Bill was a farmer, and usually worked in thewoods during the winter months. After returning to Upper Brighton in 1944, he worked mainly as a carpenter.
On the 28th of February 1938, he was returning to Juniper with several other woods workers when he was accidently run over by a logging truck. His right leg was broken both below and above the knee, all his ribs were broken on the right side of his chest and two on the left, his jaw was broken, and he had several internal injuries. He spent fiveweeks in the hospital at Bath, N.B., under the care of Doctor Jim Lockhart, came home April 8th, and on the 7th of May he had to return to the hospital and have his appendix removed. He came home again after two additional weeks in the hospital, and spent all the remainder of 1938 recuperating. This incident terminated his farming career, and his winters in the Juniper lumber camps.
Bill was educated in Guimac lore. Two of his outstanding qualities were his simplicity and his wit.

Heber Hatfield attended the local school in Simonds and, as a young man, entered into a
business career. He was later regarded as one of Canada's largest growers and shippers of
seed and table potatoes. But it was perhaps his political career for which he was best
known. First elected in 1940 as a Conservative member of parliament for the federal riding
of Victoria
Carleton, he served the constituency until he died in 1952, a period of 11 years.
Heber and Bertha (Sipprell) had no children, but after Heber's brother Archie died
prematurely in 1912, they took Archie's daughter Reta, who was born 27 Jan 1904. She
lived with them about five years, until her death 30 Jun 1918 at the age of 14 yrs., 5 mos.
The Bugle (Woodstock, N.B.), 2 Jun 1982, by Stuart Kinney; The Life and Times of
Heber Hatfield:
Heber Hatfield was an active churchman, a strong Conservative, and a man who said what
was on his mind.
He was a "unique personality who embodied the instincts of Carleton County and resolved
its contradictions", said Fred Hatfield, his son, speaking to the Maymeeting of the Carleton
County Historical Society in Glassville Friday evening.
Heber Hatfield was born in Simonds on April 17, 1885, the son of a cobbler. Besides the
shoe business, his father also ran a general store and operated the ferry between Middle
Simonds and Peel. Hatfield's first business venture was buying and selling lamb, and
selling fountain pens door to door.
At the age of 16, he moved to Hartland where he was to become 'the Potato King of
Carleton County'.
"Business was his life", said Fred. "He had 25 warehouses in New Brunswick and many
others in Prince Edward Island and Quebec".
Hatfield potatoes found their way all over North and South America and, "at the peak of
his career his company was shipping 25,000 cars of potatoes a year", Fred recalled, adding
"and thats a lot of potatoes".
Hatfield operated a starch factory during World War 1, and he "is given credit as one of
the first people in North America to manufacture white starch". At the time, all starch was

brown, and Hatfield developed the purer variety with the help of his nephew, Dr. George
Hatfield.
He was also a pioneer in the field of potato dehydration. Fred commented that "you might
not serve them on the best table, but the British government considered them good enough
to feed their army around the world".
Hatfield, though, did not confine himself to the potato industry alone. He also made
cheese, ran a lumber business and a furniture company, operated a foxfarm, kept hens and
sheep, published two newspapers, and was at one time or another president of Hartland
Electric Company, J.W. Boyer, and the Maine Potato Products.
However, business was not always brisk. Fred recalled, "the night in 1929 that he came
home and had supper just like always. About half way through the mealhe said, 'Oh, by the
way, we lost everything we had today'. My mother later told me that we lost about one half
million dollars. My father didn't get upset. He just said I did it once and I can do it again,
and kept right on eating."
Hatfield's philosophy about money changed after the '29 crash. Until then he had devoted
himself to amassing a personal fortune, but after that "money meant nothing to him", Fred
said. "He invested his money to create jobs in the area and he even started businesses up
and literally gave them away".
On the civic side of his life's ledger, Hatfield was equally busy. Hewas mayor of Hartland
from 1928-32, and acted as warden of Carleton County from 1940-41. Aswell, he was a
director of the Fisher Memorial Hospital for many years, a director of the New Brunswick
Protestant Orphanage, and was the president and one of the founding members of the
Greenwood Cemetery Company. However, he played his most important role in the House
of Commons.
He was first elected in March, 1940, in the riding of Victoria-Carleton, taking the seat
away from the incumbent Liberal. "There was no money for that election", Fred recalled,
"because the Tories didn't think they could win the seat. So Dad justused his own money,
and that of his friends". After polling, Hatfield had come up with a 691 vote majority
despite a record snowfall the Saturday before election day. But everybody still managed to
get out and vote, according to Fred.
"People snowshoed and skied to the polls", he said, adding that "men from Hartland went
out by the truckload to shovel the voters out. When I saw that I knewhe'd win the
election", Fred said.
In 1945 the situation improved. Despite the fact that Conservatives were not winning in
Canada, Hatfield increased his majority to 2,233 votes. June of 1949 was the last election
for Hatfield. Fred reminisced, "I chauffeured him in that campaign. Iwas young and in
great shape, and he was sick in bed when the election was called. He got out of bed and
asked me to drive. I never thought he'd make it, but at the end I wassick and he was well.
Every day he would meet people and kept getting stronger. It was amazing."
Fred has several amusing anecdotes to relate about his father's business and political
dealings. Like the time Milton Gregg, then Veteran's Affairs Minister, asked Hatfield how
he managed to get things through the Department that Gregg himself could not, and
Hatfield answered, "You just don't know the right people Milton".
Or the time in the '30s when he was making an annual journey to Cuba to sell potatoes.
Hatfield financed his trips on a shoestring, and by the time he reached Atlanta, Georgia, he
had had his fill of cheap hotels. He promised his friends they would spend the night in the
finest hotel in the city, and eat the best food on the menu, at his expense. After supper was
over, the others asked Hatfield how he would pay for the extravagance. He solved the
problem by telephoning the president of the First National Bank of Atlanta. "You don't

know me," Hatfield said, "but I sell potatoes to most of the members of your board. Now I
need some money in a hurry." The bank president agreed to lend Hatfield the money in the
morning. However, that was too late, because the men planned a 6 a.m.check out. The
bank president was cajoled into delivering the money, $150, by 10:30 that night, and the
men had a peaceful sleep.
He once flipped a coin to decide the ownership of 3000 barrels of potatoes, and lost. He
once bet John Diefenbaker that most of the members of the House of Commons had not
read the British North America Act, and won after he and The Chief found only four
members who could meet the demand.
On the floor of the House, he spoke on behalf of his constituents ina way that earned him
the respect of many. His output on agriculture was enormous, as one might expect, but he
also spoke passionately against anti-semitism and the persecution of the Jehova's Witness.
He favoured improved health care for the Indians and was instrumentalin establishing a
special committee to study the needs of Indians a full ten years before they had the right to
vote.
When trucking was on the upswing, he warned Canada's rail lines they were pricing
themselves out of business. His final words in the House were in favour of the broadening
of the regulations governing Unemployment Insurance to include time lost through
sickness.
Heber Hatfield died Jan. 3, 1952. At the time, Austin Cross, a journalist familiar with his
life, wrote a tribute to him. He called him "a tough old Tory. Liberals were his natural
enemies and he loved to beat them. When Tories were going down like nine-pins, it is no
surprise that he took the constituency of Victoria-Carleton in 1940. He growled rather than
talked, and he said what he had to say. It is hard to estimate his work".
Perhaps the most remarkable feature about the man was that he was theonly Conservative
in a big Liberal family. Fred recalled that on the Sunday before election day, in every
campaign, it was tradition for his father to invite his family over for dinner. "As they left
they all shook hands and said, 'Well Heber, we'll be out there working against you on
election day'."
It was a mark of his greatness that all their work was to no avail.
