Samuel Jr. apparently got a little too frisky outside of his marriage to Elizabeth Burt with Elizabeth's sister, Mary, and left her with an illegitimate child.
The Deacon, Samuel's father, was forced to acknowledge his son Sameul in official documents to the Springfield courts of those days for some misdeeds. (See Pynchon Court Records in "Families of the Pioneer Valley," Regional Publications, West Springfield, MA 2000).

He was the grandson of Samuel, the early emigrant from London who was among the first of the settlers at Springfield, and again of Northampton, and he could remember the day, when he was five years old, on which that founder of the family died sitting in his chair as if asleep. His mother was of that family of Burt which had played a leading part in the first century of the Connecticut valley's stirring pioneer history.
Leaving Northampton, where Benjamin had been born Jul 13, 1660, Samuel Wright and his family were among the first white people to find a home at Northfield, in 1673. There were seven children, Samuel, 19; Joseph, 16; Benjamin, 13; Ebenezer, 10; Elizabeth, 7; Eliezer, 5; Hannah, 2. These were gathered into the stockade that frightsome day, Sept 2, 1675, when the Indians fell upon the little settlement-all but the father, who was in command of the company that had been provided for defense and who fell, first victim of Indian bullets on Northfield soil. Only Samuel, the oldest son, suffered physical harm, receiving into his body a bullet to remain there all the rest of his eighty years. But into the heart of each of them was carried a wound that would cause it to pulsate in resentment all their days. They shared the unspeakable terror of the nights and days of imprisonment in the little fort, heard together the distant shots of the Beers battle, suffered as one the awful silence that followed it and joined in the journey down the valley which left the town of their pioneer hopes a desolate waste.

Benoni is a Biblical name that means "son of my sorrow." It was the original name given to the younger son of the patriarch Jacob. Rachel, his mother, in her dying agony named the child Benoni.
(Genesis 35:18).
This name was often given in American Colonial times to a child whose mother died in childbirth or whose father died before the child was born. In fact, this is an important clue. When one sees the name Benoni, look to see what sad event might have caused the child to be given that name. It might have been the death of a grandparent, a parent or a sibling

His will dated 5/23/1723 bequeathed half the iron works to his son Jacob and the other half to son Isaac. Will was probated 6/11/1730. Selectman 12 years John Hathaway and Shadrack Wilbore witnessed Walter Deane's will, 1716 (American Gen. Volo. 23, p. 176). "History of Dighton", 1962, p. 148ff, states that John Hathaway and Thomas Coram chose the spot on the west side of the river for their shipyard as early as 1693, built houses side by side; after ten year's Coram returned to England and left Hathaway with business.....law suit involved two completed ships, one fully rigged and ready for the sea. Lic, innkeeper 5 June 1684. John and Hannah sold land 5 Feb 1695/6. Second wife, Christian (probably Maxfield) signed with him the deed to Jacob dated 24 June 1726 (Taunton 17-88). The order of births of his children is uncertain but all were probably born in Freetown.

Jacob was born in a garrison house in Taunton where his parents fled in King Phillip's War. He was a selectman of Freetown 1720-9; assessor, 1725-36. As a young man he served in militia, but Quaker influence of Chaces, Shermans and Stranges drew him to join their group before 1719. He gave land for their meetinghouse, refused to serve in the expedition to Maine against the French and Indians and was in jail for this when his youngest son was born (Jael). He received land by deed just before his marriage, part of his father's land, dated January 29,1725.

We first hear of Henry Burt at Roxbury, MA where his house was burned, for which loss the General Court made a grant to the town in November 1639. He removed to Springfield, MA about 1638 and was there cleark of the band and clerk of the writs. He was a 'lay exhorter' at meetings on the Sabbath, when Sprinfield was without a minister. Was yearly chosen one of the five men "by ye general vote and consent of ye Plantaion for ye ordering ye prudential affairs of ye towne." Was one of the "six men undernamed shall have full power to lay out the lands both of upland and meddowe, etc., " and his name is constantly appearing, in various positions of trust, on the records.
On his deathbed, Mr. Burt made a verbal will, which certain witnesses took oath to and which the Court allowed. On the record appears "Henry Burt (ye Clarke of ye writts) dyed ye 30 of April 1662 in ye evening ans was buryed May 1, 1662". There is a tradition that Ulalia, his wife, was laid out for dead in England, and put in her coffin, but signs of life appearing at her funeral, she recovered, came to New England, and was the mother of nineteen children. Her death in Springfield is thus recorded, "Widow Vlaliah Burt was sick and died Aug 19, 1690."
The sons and all but four daughters were born before coming to Springfield.

MILO - Vera M. Burton, 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Oct. 14, 1999, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born June 19,1906, in Upper Waterville, N.B., Canada, the eldest daughter of Woodford and Frances (Tompkins) Rockwell. After becoming a U.S. citizen, she married Harold H. Burton. They lived in Oakfield and then in Derby,raising eight children and their beloved eldest granddaughter, BonitaMarie Pelkey Cormier. She was a member of the United Baptist Church of Milo. Vera was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved her plants and crafts. She will be greatly missed by her children,..... and their spouses. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a twin daughter, Maxine Towne; three sisters, Erma Hillman, Ada Canning and Ida Crouse; a great-grandchild, Adam Bell; a great-great-grandchild, Samantha Cox. Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Lary Funeral Home,Milo. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the United Baptist Church in Milo with Rev. He was made a Master Mason in the Caleb Butler Lodge in 1918 and transfered to Brookline Lodge in 1939. He was also a mamber of the Scottish Rite. He loved the sea and in his retirement years he restored and sailed his schooner and ketch. MILO - Vera M. Burton, 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Oct. 14, 1999, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born June 19,1906, in Upper Waterville, N.B., Canada, the eldest daughter of Woodford and Frances (Tompkins) Rockwell. After becoming a U.S. citizen, she married Harold H. Burton. They lived in Oakfield and then in Derby,raising eight children and their beloved eldest granddaughter, BonitaMarie Pelkey Cormier. She was a member of the United Baptist Church of Milo. Vera was a devoted mother and grandmother and loved her plants and crafts. She will be greatly missed by her children,..... and their spouses. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a twin daughter, Maxine Towne; three sisters, Erma Hillman, Ada Canning and Ida Crouse; a great-grandchild, Adam Bell; a great-great-grandchild, Samantha Cox. Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the Lary Funeral Home,Milo. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the United Baptist Church in Milo with Rev. Dexter, Dec. 5, Frank Burton, The death of Frank Burton, 78 occurred on the Ridge Road Wednesday followoing a short illness, he was born in Dexter the son of Elijah and Eliza Bean Burton. He is survived by his brother, Perly Burton of Dexter and a sister Miss Lena Burton of Bangor. Funeral services will be held at the late home Friday afternoon at one o'clock. The Rev. E. Mercer officiating. The Bearers will be Arthur Trefethen, John Murray, John Smart, Joseph Lancaster, Melvin Trefethen and Donald Farr.

Perley J. Burton, 74, died today at a Bangor Hospital. He was born November 8, 1882 in Corinna, son of Frank and Emma Knox Burton. He attended Corinna schools and worked on his father's farm, later becoming a salesman. For the past 20 years, he had made his home with his sister, Miss Lena Burton in Bangor. He was a member of the Jehovah Witnesses of Bangor. Surviving besides his sister are four cousins. Funeral services will be held at the Franham Funeral Home in newport Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. the Rev. Roy Snow of Bangor officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter.

DEATH: Funeral services were held this afternoon, Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Crosby Funeral Home at Dexter for Miss Lena Belle Burton, 73, who died at St. Dominic's Nursing Home at Dexter Monday after a long illness. The Rev. Walter B. Wakeman of the First Baptist Church officiated. The remains were entombed and burial will take place next spring at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
She was born at Corinna, Jan. 14, 1888, daughter of Frank and Emma (Knox) Burton. She was a graduate of Dexter High School and Beal Business College, Bangor.
She was a resident of Bangor for 50 years, during which time she was employed as bookkeeper at a
Bangor shoe store and the Eastern Trust and Banking Company. She was a member of the Columbia
Street Baptist Church, and the Philathea group of that church.
Her only survivors are four cousins, Mrs. Marion Dearborn, Harold Knox and Merle Knox, all of Dexter, and Mrs. Dorothy Nelson of Pomfret, Conn.
