Eudaf Hen (the Old) first appears in the old Welsh mythological tale, t
he "Dream of Macsen". The future Roman Emperor, Magnus Maximus, drea
mt of Eudaf's beautiful daughter, Elen Lluyddog (of the Host), and sent em
issaries across the Empire to find her. She wasdiscovered in her father
's palace at Caer-Segeint (Caernarfon) where the oldman sat, carving 'gwy
ddbwyll' pieces (like chess-men). Maximus came to Britain, married the gi
rl and eventually inherited her father's kingdom, much to the disgust of h
is male heir, Conan Meriadoc.
If he existed at all, Eudaf lived in the mid-4th century. He would, theref
ore, have been a Romano-Briton, living an extremely Romanized lifestyle. T
he Latin Octavius the Old is therefore a much more appropriate form of h
is name. His daughter was Helena.
The Dream story clearly indicates that Octavius was the monarch around Cae
rnarfon inNorth Wales, but later writers - chiefly the mistrusted Geoffr
ey of Monmouth- made him "Duke of the Giwissei" or "Iarl Ergyng ac Ewias
": evidently ruling in Ergyng and Gwent. This may have arisen from his sup
posed descent from so-called pre-Roman Kings of Siluria (named after the C
eltic tribe who lived inthat area). Though the connection is persistent a
nd it is equally possible that the Caernarfon association is due to Maxim
us and Helena's later residencethere. Octavius would not have been a ki
ng at this date, but perhaps a decurion of one of these civitates (Roman t
owns). However, he is also called one of the High-Kings of Britain. Su
ch a title would, clearly, not have existed either but it may indicate th
at he held a position of considerable importance in the Roman administrati
on. The official with control of both the Caernarfon and Gwent areas was t
he Praeses of Britannia Prima.
Geoffrey's mythology has Octavius taking up the British High-Kingship aft
er defeating King Coel Godhebog (the Magnificent)'s brother, Trahear
n, in battle near Winchester. So perhaps he took office by force.
Early records are confused about Eudaf's descendants. Some stories claim t
hat he had various sons, Conan, Adeon/Gadeon and Eudaf II. Others, that He
lena was his sole direct heiress and that Conan, his male heir, was only h
is nephew. This appears to fit best. Magnus Maximus and his wife probab
ly inherited Eudaf's position in society, helping the former toput himse
lf forward as Emperor of the West. Conan made excellent marriages and w
as placated with vast estates given by his cousin's husband. Adeon/Gade
on alias Cadfan was actually his son. Eudaf II appears very late and is pr
obably mythological.

Eudaf Hen's Ancestry
The family of Eudaf Hen - or Octavius the Old as he would have been kno
wn to his contemporaries - hailed from the Gwent area of Wales. Eudaf w
as apparently Lord of the Gewissae.
The Gewissae are a confused people. Some think they were the Germanic ra
ce who lived around Dorchester-on-Thames and Abingdon even before the Roma
ns left Britain. They later merged with the West Saxons who continued to u
se the name. However, there are other indications that they were the Briti
sh who lived further to the West. The word "Gewissae" may be related to Ew
yas, the northern region of Gwent, and, possibly, to the Hwicce, an appare
ntly Saxon people who lived in Gloucestershire. Their name may have had Br
itish origins.
There are tales of Eudaf holding court at Caer Segeint (Caernarfon), but t
his was probably due to associations with his son-in-law, the Emperor Magn
us Maximus. The Gwent/Gloucestershire area would appear to have been his r
eal home, like the tyrant Vortigern who seems to have claimed him as an an
cestor.
But Eudaf is a man on the boundaries of mythology. All that can real

Iestyn ap Gwrgan ruled Glamorgan (Morgannwg) 1081-1091 when it was taken over by the Normans and put under the control of Robert Fitzhamon. Iestyn was deposed and died in a priory.

Iestin ab Gwrgant (fl 1093), prince of Gwent and Morganwg, is a shadowy hero of the legend of the conquest of Glamorgan, whose biography, as told in the 'Gwentian Brut y Tywysogion,' is fabulous and absurd. Married in 994, he failed to obtain the succession of Morganwg on his father's death in 1030, because the people preferred his great-uncle, Howel ab Morgan; but he became ruler on Howel's death in 1043. Nearly fifty years later he is said to have taken a prominent share in the history of the conquest of Glamorgan by the Normans. He was an enemy of Rhys ab Tewdwr, the king of Brecheiniog. Hard pressed by his enemy, he promised to marry his daughter to Einion ab Collwyn if the latter could procure him help from England against their common foe Rhys. Eineon obtained the help of Robert Fitzhamon, who speedily defeated and slew Rhys, king of Brecheiniog. We know from authentic history that Rhys died in 1093. Iestin paid the Normans liberally and they went their way. He now refused his daughter to Einion, saying that he would never give either land or daughter to a traitor. Einion in revenge persmacded Fitzhamon to return. The Normans soon became masters of Iestin's territory and drove Iestin away. Iestin fled to Glastonbury over the Channel; thence he went to Bath and finally back to Bwent, where he died at the monastery of Llangenys at an extraordinary old age. His sons, Caradog, Madog, and Howel, abandoned their father to his fate and were rewarded with a share of the conquered land, Caradog, the eldest, obtaining the lordship of Aberavon.
The details of the story of the conquest of Glamorgan are mythical; the outline is not in itself unlikely. Iestin's historical existence is proved by the existance of his descendants. His grandsons, Morgan, Maredudd, Owain, and Cadwaladr, the four sons of Caradog were joint lords of Aberavon when Archbishop Baldwin and Giraldus Cambrensis made their crusading tour in Wales. Rhys, another son of Iestin, is also mentioned in a document of the reign of John. Some Glamorganshire families claim descent from Iestin. [Dictionary of National Biography I:412-413]

Iestyn ap Gwrgant (fl c. 1081-1093), last independent ruler of Glamorgan and son of Gwrgant ab Ithel. Little is known with certainty about him. Cardiff seems to have been his seat of government, but the extent of his territory is unknown. He cannot have become supreme in Glamorgan until 1081, when Caradog ap Gruffydd, who ruled Glamorgan from c 1075, was slain. In 1080, Iestyn was sufficiently insignificant to appear as a minor witness attesting a grant of land made of Llandaff by 'Caratocus rex morcannuc.' Yet before his death, he was important enought to violate the sanctity of Llandaff, an act for which Iestyn had to atone by a grant of land. He founded the fifth royal tribe of Wales, and most of the noble families of Glamorgan claimed descent from him.
A famous story of Glamorgan, at least as old as the 15th cent., associated the Norman conquest of Glamorgan with Iestyn's name. It describes how Iestyn, through his kinsman Einion ap Collwyn, a fugitive in England, secured Robert Fitzhamon's assistance against Rhys ap Tewdwr, whom he slew at Penrhys. Iestyn paid the Normans but refused Einion's promised reward - his daughter in marriage. Einion recalled the departing Normans, who overthrew Iestyn, divided the lowlands amongst themselves, leaving only the hill country to the Welsh. Iestyn fled - to Keynsham Abbey, according to one version - where he d. Where this story touches known facts it is demonstrably wrong, e.g. Keynsham Abbey was not founded till 1169, while Rhys was slain near Brecon in Easter week 1093. [Dictionary of Welsh Biography 408]

Gruffydd ap Rhys (c 1090-1137), prince of Deheubarth; son of Rhys ap Tewd
wr and Gwladus, daughter of Rhiwallon ap Cynfyn. When the old South Cym
ru monarchy disintegrated on the fall of Rhys ap Tewdwr in 1093, Gruffyd
d, the infant heir, was taken to Ireland where hewas given asylum duri
ng childhood and early manhood. When he returned in 1113, the patriotic su
pport of his younger countrymen was made useless by the cautious condu
ct of elements as yet indisposed to resist the Norman monarchy, includi
ng Gruffudd ap Cynan, who was prepared to hand his young kinsman over to H
enry I when in 1115 he sought sanctmacry in Gwynedd. The failure of the re
sistance movement which reached its climax in the open rebellion of 1116 w
as inevitable. Gruffydd ap Rhys nevertheless reached an accommodation wi
th Henry and was given land in the commote of Caco. Apart from a brief int
ermissionin 1127, involving a second exile in Ireland, he appears to ha
ve lived a quiet existence there until after Henry's death. There al
so no doubt were b Maredudd and Rhys, his sons by Gwenllian, daughter of G
ruffudd ap Cynan, Anarawd and Cadell being evidently children of an earli
er union. In the general revolt which spread throughout Cymru when Henry d
., he took a prominent part, being present at the decisive battle of Cr
ug Mawr in 1136. In the following year he d., predeceased by the redoubtab
le Gwenllian. It fell to the lot of his youngest son, Rhys (1132-1197
), to rebuild the family fortunes.

th him but rather he was beloved by all.
1137 In this year died Gruffudd ap Rhys, the light and excellence a
nd strength of all South Cymru. AndGruffudd ap Cynan, prince of Gwynedd a
nd head and king and defender and pacifier of all Cymru, ended his tempor
al life in Christ after receiving extreme unction and communion and confes
sion and repentance for his sins, and becoming a monk and making a good e
nd in his perfect old age. And for a third time the sons of Gruffudd ap Cy
nan came to Ceredigion and burned castles.

Gruffydd ab Rhys (d 1137), king or prince of South Cymru (Deheubarth
), was brought up in Ireland, where in his childhood he had fled with h
is kinsfolkafter the defeat and death of his father Rhys ab Tewdwr, at t
he hands of Bernard of Neufmarche in 1093. On that fatal day 'fell the kin
gdom of the Britons,' and nearly all Rhys old kingdom was seized by Norm
an adventurers. Nest, Rhys' daughter became the bride of Gerald of Windso
r, steward of Pembroke. When Gruffydd had grown up to mandhood he became w
eary of exile and inactivity, and about 1113 he returned to Dyved. For t
wo years he wandered about the country. His return seems to have inspir
ed the conquered Welsh with the hope of regaining their liberty under h
is rule. It was 'represented that the minds of all the Britons were with h
im in contempt of the royal title of King Henry's,' and after two yea

The death of HenryI in 1135 was the signal for more vigorous and more hos
tile policies by the Welsh, though firm action by Stephen (the king who su
cceeded Henry) and the marcher lords held the promise of successful defenc
e. Henry II succeeded Stephen in December 1154, determined to restore auth
ority to the kingdom and to repair the damage caused by civil strife and t
he lack of a strong central administration. By 1157 he was ready to turn h
is attention to Wales.
Two princescarried Wales through these difficult years, Owain Gwyne
dd in the north and Rhys ap Gruffydd in south Wales. Both were aware of t
he complex problems to be faced: to deal with rival Welsh dynasties, to de
al with marcher lords, and to live in the shadow of a rich and powerful ne
ighbor. Owain gauged the political realities of the day quickly and, howev
er often he had to yield, he did not lose the initiative.
Owain Gwynedd, Prince of Gwynedd 1137-70, was born circa 1109. In 11
37 he succeeded his father Gruffydd ap Cynan (1081-1137) to the kingd
om of Gwynedd, which covered most of north Wales. While England was engag
ed in civil war, Owain used his skill as statesman and soldier to extend h
is frontiers. In 1157 Henry II led his first campaign against Owain, b
ut it ended in a truce. He was required to do homage to Henry but it was n
ot longbefore Owain was acting with complete independence. When Mad
og ap Maredudd died in 1160, he attacked Powys and extended his influen
ce to the east. Six years later, the Council of Woodstock attempted to red
uce the Welsh princes from client status to that of dependent vassalage, a
nd the subsequent uprising was led by Owain and Rhys ap Gruffydd of sou
th Wales. Henry's second attempt at subduing Wales failed ignominiously a
nd left Owain free to capture Basingwerk and Rhuddlan castles (1166-67
). In 1168 he set foot on negotiations with Louis VII of France to bui
ld an alliance between Gwynedd and France against their common enemy. It w
as a course which required great finesse and firm judgement. In one direct
ion it pointed to a policy which would be used to good effect by later rul
ers of Gwynedd, the search for recognition and an alliance inEurope. Havi
ng openly defied Henry in 1168 by offering to help Louis, Owain maintain
ed his independent position until his death. He left behind him a reputati
on of wisdom and magnanimity.
The reign of Owain Gwynedd marks the most peaceful period of Welsh indepen
dence, when the native princes absorbed many of the current European refor
ming ideas and adapted the more effective structures of both church and st
ate to their own society. Monastic foundations were encouraged, diocesan b
oundaries defined, and many stone churches built. Motte-and-bailey earthwo
rk castles identical to those built earlier by the Norman invaders were n
ow erected by the princes as the centers of many of their personal estate
s. Two of Owain's sons are credited with building the first stone castl
es in Gwynedd towards the end of the 12th century. The tragedy, recurre
nt in Welsh history, was that Owain was not followed immediately by a stro
ng ruler. Upon his death in 1170, open warfare broke out between his son
s: Dafydd and Rhodri killed their elder half-brother, Hywel, and for the n
ext 20 years Gwynedd was divided between them and their kinsmen. Gwynedd a
nd Wales would not see another strong leader until Llywelyn the Great exte
nded his control over most of Wales in the later part of the century.
Upon Owain's death his lands were divided between his sons, of whom Maelgw
yn inherited Anglesey. Civil War broke out from 1170-74, from which emerg
ed two victors who eventually divided the kingdom between them. Another so
n, Cynan, succeeded in retaining his land at Merioneth and briefly re-esta
blishing a ruling dynasty there.

Devon - Awliscombe
Entry from White's Devonshire 1878:
Awliscombe, Awlescombe, or Owl's Combe, is a parish and village, 2 miles W. by N. of Honiton Railway Station, 9 miles S.E. from Cullompton Railway Station, and 16 miles N.E. from Exeter; its parish, which includes the hamlets of Weston and Wolverston, is in Honiton union, county court district, petty sessional division, Payhembury polling district of North Devon, Exeter archdeaconry, Dunkeswell rural deanery, and Hemyock hundred. It had 581 inhabitants (270 males, 311 females) in 1871, living in 133 houses, on 2569 acres of land, which rises in bold hills on the north. The parish is said to be called Owl's Combe, from the number of owls which breed here and are heard by night. A handsome bridge over the Otter, connecting this and Honiton parishes, was built in 1817. Awliscombe had a grant for a market and fair in 1291, but both have long been obsolete. An estate of about 207 acres, called the manor of Awliscombe, was given, in 1491, by Thomas Calwodeley, Esq., to the Corporation of Exeter for the relief of poor citizens. The rest of the soil belongs to Colonel Drewe, Mrs. Notley, George Neumann, Esq., F. Pearse, Esq., Lady G. Sawley, Mrs. Elliott, the Pring family, and a few smaller freeholders. Mr. Neumann occupies Tracey House.
