WINN – Warnita B. (Murdough) McLeod, 83, wife of the late Everett McLeod, died Sunday, July 30, 2006, at a Lincoln healthcare faci lity. She was born Feb. 25, 1923, in North Lyndeborough N.H., the daught er of Warren and Rebecca (Avery) Murdough. She was a member of the Ladi es Auxiliary Post No. 7409 in Mattawamkeag. She enjoyed hunting, fishing a nd yard sales. She is survived by four sons, John ÙSRichieÙT Putnam of New H ampshire, Ronald ÙSBusterÙT and Patty Putnam of Medway, Douglas and Jeanne M cLeod of East Winn and Albert and Sherry McLeod of Wesley; five daughter s, Naida and Norman Brown of Mattawamkeag, Sharon and Robert Powers of Ea st Millinocket, Cheryl and Gerry Smith of Burlington, Mary and Bob Wym an of Winn and Lycia and Victor Savage of Enfield; her twin brother, Warr en B. Murdough of New Hampshire; a son-in-law, Ron Mathewson; 22 grandchil dren; several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In additi on to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter, Nancy Mathewson; s ix brothers and sisters, Charlie, Alvin, Doris, Emiline, Mary and Ada-belle.

Watch for the other Alexander Sutherland, he was Rev Alexander Sutherland and
was born Jan 5 1816 in Dolla Lairg, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. Emigrated in July 1819 to
Pictou, Nova Scotia. In 1851 he moved to Queen's County PEI and served there until
1859 when returned to Nova Scotia. 1869 moved to Nebraska, then served in Ontario,
returning to Nebraska in 1897 where he passed on Dec 13, 1897. His body was sent to
Kincardine, Ontario for burial. This data is included because of many errors with the name.
There is no evidence that the two are related. Married Christina Ross and had a son
Alexander who was baptised 1851 at Presbyterian Chuch of Wood Islands,
born at Rogers Hill, Nova Scotia.

Pioneer Robert MacLeod and his wife Effie MacPherson came to Cape North from Skye, Scotland by way of Prince Edward Island, Lake Ainslie and Pleasant Bay (then Grantosh). They lived at Lake Ainslie for a few years. When their son Donald was 3 years old, they moved to Pleasant Bay and ere long to Cape North in 1828. Effie was 6 years old when she left Skye, doesn't mention Robert's age. On the voyage to Pleasant Bay Mrs. MacLeod gave birth to a son Angus in an open boat. When the book was written he was residing at Middle Harbour, Cape North, age 89.
Quote: I must again refer to Mr. Robert MacLeod, whose wife Mrs. Effie MacLeod, nursed many a mother through childbirth and who for many a long year was the only doctor in Cape North. She never hesitated, when called on to make a trip, even on snow-shoes in winter, on a sick call to Ingonish or Pleasant Bay. This God-fearing and lovely woman had a family of five sons and four daughters.
The first grist mill at Cape North was built at South Harbour by Wm. Henry Munro. This was on Donald MacDonald's brook. Pioneer John MacDonald, South Ridge, operated one on South River for a while on his own property. Murdoch MacLeod, son of Pioneer Robert, bought John MacDonald's claim at Glen Nevis and became the next miller of both mills. He married Ann MacPherson, sister of Pioneer Norman (Noah), nicknamed such, because he built boats.
Donald MacLeod (Tailor) married Mary Campbell from St. Ann's and resided in Cape North. When he died she sold the farm and joined her children in Boston. She traveled by horse and buggy to Ingonish (the same route that Donald's grandmother walked when administering to the sick) where a boat left for Sydney twice a week. Transportation to Boston was by boat from Yarmouth, docking at a pier on Atlantic Avenue, or by train to the North Station from Sydney.
Her family gathered at the North Station to welcome her and were dismayed when she didn't appear. They hurried to Atlantic Avenue, found the Yarmouth boat had docked and her name was among the ones who had
cleared customs, but she was no where around. After alerting police and checking hospitals, they returned home and found her sitting on the steps with all her luggage. Brought them up short when some began to get hysterical with relief. She lived with her son Murdoch until he unfortunately was murdered while being robbed on the Boston Common. Later made her home with her daughter Flora in Attleboro. She lived to be 81.
Robert MacLeod son of Donald (tailor) married Annie Nora Smith from St. Ann's, in Boston. After the birth of their first two children they returned to Cape Breton. He was motorman on the first streetcar that ran from Sydney to Glace Bay, then went with the Dominion Coal Company until the time of his death. He had a pleasing baritone voice and was called on a lot to sing at Gaelic concerts in the town.

DONALD E. SMALL OAKLAND \endash Donald "Donnie" E. Small, 58, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, after losing his battle to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, at his home. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Donnie was an avid member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a master electrician; working at Great Northern Paper for 21 years and then moving to Sappi to work for another 17 years. He enjoyed running, biking and camping, among various other outdoor activities. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 37 years, Vicki Small; children, Debra Kelley of Bluffton, S.C., Gregory Lyons of East Millinocket and fianc?e, Rhonda Deschane, of Brewer, and Scott Dunton of Oakland; four grandchildren, Angela Smith and husband, Trent, of South Portland, Bryan Lyons of Rexburg, Idaho, Matthew Lyons of Florida, and Christopher Scott of Savannah, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Travin and Cassidy Smith; one sister, Pam Vacanti of California; and a favorite Aunt Evelyn Levesque of East Millinocket. East Millinocket - William A. MacLeod, 89, died July 15, 1998 at a
Lincoln healthcare center. He was born Dec. 10 1908, in Howland, the son
of Angus and Elizabeth (MacNevin) MacLeod. He graduated from Schenck High
School, Class of 1927 and attended Maine School of Commerce (Husson College).
He was a World War II Army veteran. He retired from Great Northern Paper
Co. as a papermaker in 1971. Bill was a member of Paperworkers Local
No. 152 and was financial secretary for the union for more than 38 years.
Bill was a member of the Eastmill Credit Union Credit Committee for more
than 35 years. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Hazel (Michaud)
MacLeod of East Millinocket; one daughter, mrs Donald (Vicki) Small of
Madison; a grandson, Gregory Lyons; and a granddaughter, Debra Scott, both
of Bangor; four great-grandchildren, Angela Bouchard, Christopher Scott,
Bryan and Matthew Lyons; one brother, Roderick and his wife, Cynthia MacLeod
of East Millinocket; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at
R.L.Bouchard Funeral home, 17 Western Ave., East Millinocket, 2-4 and
6-8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the
funeral home. Burial will be in East Millinocket Cemetary. Friends and
relatives are invited to St. Peter’s Parich Center for a reception and
luncheon following the graveside services. If friends wish, memorial
contributions may be made to the Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St.,

East Millinocket - Ruth "Hazel" MacLeod, 96, wife of the late William "Bill" MacLeod, died Monday, July 23, 2007 at a Howland health care facility. She was born February 23, 1911 in Medway, the daughter of Frank and Charlotte "Lottie" (Michaud) Michaud. Hazel was a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church in East Millinocket. She is survived by a daughter, Vicki Small and her husband Donald of Oakland; two grandchildren, Gregory Lyons of East Millinocket and his fianc�©, Rhonda Deschane of Brewer, and Debra Kelley and her husband Steven of Bluffton, South Carolina; four great grandchildren, Angela Smith and her husband Trent of South Portland, Bryan Lyons of Oakland and Rexburg Idaho, Matthew Lyons of Florida, and Christopher Scott of Brunswick, Georgia; two great great grandchildren, Travin and Cassidy Smith of South Portland, and two step great grandchildren, Cassandra and Chad Kelley of Bangor; two sisters, June Newton and Evelyn Levesque of East Millinocket; two sisters in law, Geneva Michaud of Medway and Cynthia MacLeod of East Millinocket; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Hazel will also be missed by two special friends, Betty Ann Stanley and Joan Furlotte. In addition to her husband and her parents, Hazel was predeceased by three sisters, Geneva Michaud, Catherine Barbara Michaud, Margaret Franes White, and two brothers, Gerald and James Michaud.
