Lincoln,sc. December 8 1761. Nicolas Rideout, Jr and Sarah Oliver both of Georgetown were joined together in Marriage by me, Patrick Drummond, Just. Peace.
Nicholas joined the Perley Colony and migrated to Maugerville, New Brunswick, Canada in 1762. He was the ancestor of most of the Rideouts of New Brunswick.
In 1765, the government of Nova Scotia granted Nicholas some 500 acres of land in Maugerville. In 1757, he was a member of the Georgetown Militia. It is said he was a ship builder and worked with his father. He went to New Brunswick with the "Perley Colony", which was composed of a large number of Massachusetts and Connecticut families. One account says these people went to N.B. in one of Rideout's ships. They were nearly all farmers and most of them sympathized with the American Colonies. Among these Maugerville Colonists, Nicholas seems to have had great weight and influence. He had quite a little wealth and owned several vessels. In Kidder's valuable book called Eastern Maine and Nova Scotia during the Revolution, is an extract of a letter from Colonel John Allen to the Massachusetts Council, Boston, 25 Feb. 1777.
"I must beg leave at this time to acquaint your Honours, that the inhabitants of the county of Subury in Nova Scotia, now a county in N. B. had authorized me to appear in their behalf and agreeable to instructions would make known their warm and zealous attachment for the United States. Esteeming themselves the subjects of the States and are determined to defend the cause to their utmost." The American Colonies then sent troops to Sudbury Co. to protect these people, and John Allen was made "1st Colonel for the Expedition to the St. John River. Forts were built near Frederiction and the committees of both houses resolved to send ammunition to the inhabitants of Sudbury Co. to use in helping the American Colonies.
In the histories of this time, we read in several places that "Colonel Allen is stopping with the Rideouts in Maugerville. Lt Kidder says, Col. Allen sent a very particular letter to Mr. Rideout of commendation for his attachment to the cause desiring him to procure something that was needed, and send in Rideout boats. After the Revolution many descendants of Nicholas Rideout returned to Maine and didn't go back to New Brunswick. Rideout was always a good friend to the American Colonies.
General Notes: Child - Benjamin Rideout
Benjamin bought land from Benjamin Thompson, lot #6, which he clearedandit became his lifelong home. The deed was dated 6 May 1763. A house hebuilt on the property was still standing in 1935 and in good condition.Benjamin operated his father's shipyard, and was a member of thecommittee of inspection and safety during the Revolution in 177 inBrunswick, Maine. He signed the Association Test at New Meadows, Maine,md. 29 November 1752 at Georgetown.
The Association Test reads as follows: "We the subscribers do herebysolemnly engage and promise that we will do the utmost of our power, atthe risk of our lives and fortunes with arms, oppose the hostileproceedings of the British fleets against the United American colonies."
General Notes: Child - Mark Rideout

He drew a pension because he was blind, which was caused by smallpoxsuffered during the Revolution in 1724. He became the owner of pew 43 inthe Old North church, the one where the lanterns gave their message toPaul Revere. "Only quality people had pews here," according to oursource.

Later, there was "graunted Richard Ingersoll 30 acres of meadow in the greate meadow to be layd out by the towne." They moved to Calgary in the fall of 1928 where they lived until after the Great Depression hit in 1929. Roy had developed severe asthma and was unable to continue working, a problem ha had the rest of his days. In September 1932 they moved to Louisburg to live in the old home with her father Captain W.W. Lewis."
"In October 1934 they took over the Dundonald Inn - the former home of the late Dr. Morrison, and ran it as a hotel business. In 1943 during the war, the inn was taken over by the Navy for accommodation of Naval Staff operating out of the Port of Louisburg. The Ingraham family then moved back to the old Lewis home to live with and care for W.W. Lewis until his death in October 1946. Notes for EDWARD INMAN:
Info on this line from Elinor Perlich, elperlich@prodigy.net.
Info on this line from Weldon Whipple, www.whipple.org.
One source lists his parents as Edward and Margaret Brouche Inman.
A son, Francis, is suggested.
Taken from "The Ancestry of Emily Jane Angell, 1844-1910"
Proof is lacking of the English origin of Edward Inman, a wealthy fox glov er, who settled in Providence, RI. However, a baptism in the parish of S t. Margaret, Westminster, London generally fits what is known of the colon ist and is presented here
with possible siblings in hopes that further research will either pro ve or disprove the connection.
When Abraham Inman of Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA wrote his wi ll 18 April 1662, he left a bequest to Anne, the wife of one Michael Phill ips. Since Edward Inman, the immigrant to Providence, RI, married as his s econd wife, the widow of one Michael
Phillips, it has been suggested that Edward and Abraham could be relate d. A close look at the chronology of the Rhode Island, USA man's appearanc es shows athat these are separate individuals.
Michael Phillips of Rhode Island, USA had a wife named Barbara, not Ann e. Their children were born within the period 1651 to 1675 and probably wi thin 1651 to 1668. The children were clearly with wife Barbara, from the g ifts of land, etc., given by
Barbara's second husband to the Phillips children.
Michel Phillips appears in 1657 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA a nd makes sporadic appearences well into the 1690s. Michael Phillips of Rho de Island, USA is not seen directly after 1668 when he became a freeman a nd is certainly dead by 1676 when his wife was
remarried.
In 1645 Edward was one of the "25 acre men" signing for his free gra nt at Providence. He became a townsman Oct. 27, 1651. He also lived in War wick for a short time, being recorded as an inhabitant of that town in 164 8. He sold his six-acre home lot
to Stephen Paine of Rehoboth in 1667. In 1666 he and John Mowry bought fr om William "Minnion" of Punskepage, Massachusetts, USA 2000 acres lying fr om Loguesit northwards, bounding partly on the Pawtucket River, and in 166 9, calling himself late of Providence,
received a deed for 500 acres on the Pawtucket from the Indian William "Ma nannion", this deed being confirmed by King Phillip and others. The 1666 p urchase was Wesquadomeset, the present Sayles Hill in the town of North Sm ithfield and surrounding
territory. It was here Edward and seven others worked a silver mine und er an agreement signed in 1675.
Edward was one of the 12 signers of the Providence Oath of Allegiance of 1 651/2. In 1651 and 1658 he was elected Commisioner to attend the General C ourt of Commisioners at Portsmouth. In 1659 and 1660 he was elected to t he Town Council, and in 1662
again elected Commisioner, to serve in the Court held in Warwick. He was D eputy to the General Assembly in 1666, 1667, 1672, 1676, and 1678. He w as a glover and a planter.
Thus far, no record of an Edward Inman on ship lists to New England has be en located from research either in this country or in England. The Regist er of St. Margaret Westminster does show the baptism March 5, 1619/20 of E dward, son of John Inman, and
a John Inman, b. ca. 1598, arrived in Virginia, USA on the "Falcon" in 161 9. (Note - Our Edward named his first known son John , and at that peri od the first son was customarily given the paternal grandfather's name.)
It has been hypothesized that the John of the "Falcon" was the person refe rred to in the St. Margaret parish records, and that his son came with h im and later moved to Rhode Island, USA. Although such a theory requires c oast-wise migration to New England
at an early date, therr are some interesting coincidences that prevent dis missing this scenario out-of-hand. In addition to the name of "our" Edward 's first son mentioned above, Fothergill in his Wills of Westmoreland, Vir ginia, USA 1654-1800 reports that the
will Abraham Inman, 5-18-1662, lists a bequest to a Mrs. Michael Phillip s. The second wife of our Edward Inman was Barbara Phillips, widow of Mich ael Phillips. Unfortunately, this will cannot be located.
Regarding Edward's first wife, Nora Snow in Vol. II of her 1939 Snow-Est es Ancestry points out that on Dec. 7, 1663 Edward Inman and Thomas Hopki ns gave bond to the town for any money to be used for the relief of Joan na Hazard. Nora theorizes that
Joanna (Arnold) Hopkins married secondly a Hazard and that she was support ed by her son, Thomas Hopkins, and son-in-law, Edward Inman. William Hopki ns and his wife, Joanna (Arnold) Hopkins were the parents of Elizabeth Hop kins, b. 1619. Note that
Edward's first daughter was named Joanne, possible for his wife's mother.. .....

EAST MILLINOCKET – Kathleen Elizabeth (Mahany) Nisbett, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, surrounded by her loving family after a seven-day stay at Colonial Health Care, Lincoln. She suffered from pulmonary fibrosis for many years and experienced a very brief and rapid decline in health prior to her death. She lived independently at her home in East Millinocket since the early death of her husband in 2002. She was born Jan. 26, 1926, to James William Mahany and Birdena Inman Mahany of Easton, and was the great-granddaughter of Cain Mahany, who was a member of the 31st Maine Regiment of the Union Army in the Civil War. Kathleen was the beloved wife of Maurice Edgar Nisbett, whom she married Aug. 21, 1948, in South Portland. Kathleen graduated as valedictorian of Easton High School in 1943, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Farmington State Teachers College, June 14, 1947. She taught in the East Millinocket school system at the outset of her graduation from Farmington State Teachers College. She said that she knew she wanted to teach home economics from the time she was in eighth grade. After she married she took some time off to have her family and then she returned to teaching in 1962. When she retired in June 1986, she had taught for a total of 26 years at Schenck High School. She said that she had taught as many as three generations in one family and always believed that the teachers had a responsibility to set high standards and expectations for the students. She also believed that home economics was a class that should be taught to boys and girls alike, because the skills for homemaking and consumer economics are vital to today's dual wage earners. Before she retired from teaching, she started a very successful fabric and yarn business, Kay's Fabric and Yarn, in April 1982. She learned the fine art of quilting and taught many of her customers to quilt. She later sold the business in August 1988, but continued to enjoy quilting, sewing and knitting for the remainder of her life. She donated numerous quilts for fund raising at St. Peter's Catholic Church throughout the years. She also donated many lap quilts for patients at Eastern Maine Medical Center and Millinocket Hospital. Kay also had an extensive perennial garden in her yard and enjoyed extending the variety of flowers to this garden. She became an avid golfer along with her husband, Maurice, and traveled to many parts of the world in her earlier retirement years with friends and family. She also played a mean game of bridge. Kathleen is survived by her son, James W. Nisbett and his wife, Sherri, of East Millinocket; three daughters, Joanne Gabbianelli and her husband, Frank, of Dixmont, Peggy Daigle and her husband, Maurice, of East Millinocket and Old Town, and Debra Hochran and her husband, Dr. Robert Hochran, of Skillman, N.J.; five grandchildren, Staci Nisbett and her husband, Darren Schoff, of Scarborough, Keli Daigle Marston and her husband, Aaron, of St. Augustine, Fla., Erica Gabbianelli of Dixmont, Nick Gabbianelli of Old Town and Aaron Hochran and his wife, Allyson; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Dawn Marston, Kacie Marie Marston and Erin Hochran; and her sister, Margaret Kopack of South Portland. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice, in 2002; granddaughter, Angela Daigle, in 1999; sister, Frances Mahoney, in 2003; and brothers, Paul Mahany, in 1984, Merle Mahany, in 2002, and Philip Mahany, in 2004. Friends are invited to visit with the family 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, East Millinocket. A reception will be held at St. Peter's Parish Center immediately after the funeral. Spring interment will be at East Millinocket Cemetery.

General Notes: Husband - Joseph Greely Mansfield
On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:
..."The notice of the death of Joseph G. Mansfield stated that when he died on Sept. 14, 1932 in North Adams, Mass. he was 60 years old which would indicate that he was born in 1872 and not the 1869 you give. However, the age given might have been wrong. In any case, his parents were Joseph W. and Mary Elizabeth (Bennett) Mansfield of Chebeague Island which is part of the town of Cumberland - originally it was part of North Yarmouth".
According to his daughter, Printha, he always went by his middle name. Everyone normally referred to him as Greely Mansfield. I have been trying to determine where the middle name "Greely" came from. I have been so far unable to locate any reference to a relative or friend of the family who bore that name. Family speculation is that it refers to the charismatic celebrity, Horace Greely, who was prominent around the time of his birth.
Printha recalls that her father worked in the cotton mill in Yarmouth as a bobbin boy, at the wage of 25 cents per week, for three years from age 8 to age 11. He asked several times to be allowed to go to sea, but his father would not allow it. J. Greely did not want to follow in his father's footsteps as a fisherman, so, at age 11, he ran away from home and signed on to work onboard a tall ship and sailed all over the world. He did not return home until he was 17. The only academic schooling he ever received was from the daughter of the ship's captain, who was named Printha. This is who J. Greely's daughter was named after. His younger brother and sister were born while he was at sea.
. J.Greely went back to work at the cotton mill and worked his way up to the position of superintendent. He spent the rest of his life managing textile mills and had a reputation as being very good at taking an unprofitable mill and turning it around. As a consequence of this skill, he never stayed long at a mill. Once he got a struggling mill on its feet he would move on to another one. He was paid a very handsome salary for his services. In fact, Printha relates that one of his early life goals was to always have a $1000 bill in his money clip. He realized that goal early in his career. When he passed away, sure enough, there was a $1000 bill in his money clip!
. He married Addie Fitts of Yarmouth about 1890, soon after returning from sea. Two sons, William & Myron were born of this marriage.
. Addie died on 12 May 1901. Fifteen months later, 15 Aug 1902, Joseph was married to Victoria Harriet (Hattie) Murray of Yarmouth, an immigrant from Prince Edward Island, Canada. The first three of their five children, Charles, Nellie, and Viola, were born in Yarmouth between 1904 and 1910.
. An interesting tidbit - Sometime while superintendent of the Yarmouth mill, one of J. Greely's eyes was put out when he ran into a hook that was hanging from the ceiling. He had a glass eye put in. Later, he went to Boston and had it replaced with a more sophisticated one which would actually move along with the good eye. This made it almost impossible for the casual observer to know that he had only one real eye.
. In 1915 J. Greely moved to Groveville, New Jersey (in Mercer Co., just southeast of Trenton), to take a mill there. Printha was born there.

Elma R. Borden wrote a book "Locust Grove 1695 to Groveville 1980", Gardner Printing Co., Lambertville, NJ: 1984 (found in Hamilton Library Reference only). From pages 50-51:
. When I reached my teens, the MorrisÕ hired a superintendent of the mills by the name of Mansfield. He had four or five children, two of whom were near my age. His daughter Nellie became a very good friend and it was then that I had the pleasure of being entertained in their home. I remember how impressed I was with the ballroom. Its highly waxed floors and crystal chandeliers were something I had never seen before. There were beautiful fireplaces in every room with mantles of Italian marble. This home was called The Mansion House and stood on a large pie shaped lot bordered by Allen Street and Burlington Row or Mill Street. Today three more houses are crowded on the same lot.
. I also remember that during these years the Mansfields were gracious in entertaining. They encouraged their children to seek good playmates and always wanted to know who they were. Their oldest son, Myron, married a girl from the village, Elizabeth Kline. Also during their stay in the Grove they adopted a young boy, Irving James. He was one of a large family and had just lost his mother. Iriving was the same age as their son Charles, and even before the adoption the two boys were great friends. After the family moved to Detroit we heard that Irving had grown to become a fine member of society and a son of whom Mr. Mansfield was quite proud.

. It was while the family was living in Groveville that they took in a domestic servant, Rebecca Inman, who was known by the family as "Beck". Apparently the family was there a very short time, as in 1916 they were living in Niles, Michigan (just north of South Bend, Indiana), where the last child, Gertrude, was born. Beck moved from New Jersey to Niles with the Mansfield family.
. J. Greely was superintendent of the Towar Cotton Mill in Niles. Bob Myers, curator of the Barrien County Historical Association, was able to find a couple references to this mill:
. "I think I may have found something.ÊSource: Farm Journal Illustrated Rural Directory of Berrien County, Michigan (Philadelphia: Wilmer Atkinson Company, 1917), 278. ÊThis is the index, and under "Cotton and Woolen Goods" it lists "Towar Cotton Mills" in Niles.
. I found the following newspaper article: Fifty Years Ago column, The News-Palladium (Benton Harbor, MI), 4 June 1966 [i. e., 1916]:
. "The Towar Cotton Mills, Inc., authorized capital $500,000 of which $200,000 is to be preferred stock and the rest common stock, is a new corporation, the office of which is at present at Detroit, while the mills are to be located at Niles, according to the prospectus that has been issued for the benefit of prospective purchasers of stock. The Acme Belting Co. of Niles is a large consumer of belting duck and would be one of the largest consumers of the Towar Cotton Mills."
. The staff of the Niles Districy Library, Local history / Genealogy Dept., was able to add:
. "We do have a very small file on the Towar Cotton Mill.ÊAlso I found out that in 1929 there was another cotton mill at that location,101 Wayne Street, by the name of Mid-West.ÊThe person in charge wasÊCharles Gorton. That building is gone."
. In 1922 J. Greely moved to Stuyvesant Falls to take a mill in Stockport, New York, (about 20 miles south of Albany on the Hudson River). Beck moved with him, leaving Hattie behind. J. Greely repented of the situation and told Hattie that he would like to set things right and reunite with her. Hattie (as she later told her children) would really have liked to have accepted, but let her pride stand in the way and refused. A divorce was agreed upon. J. Greely and Beck married a week after the divorce. By this time, Charles was on his own and the girls went to live with their father in Stuyvesant Falls, N.Y. During this time, Hattie secured work as a saleslady and got herself financially established. In 1924 The girls moved back in with Hattie and they resided in the River Park neighborhood of South Bend, Indiana.
. After that, for J. Greely & Beck, it was on to a mill in Colrain, a small town on the North River in Franklin County, northwestern Massachusetts. Printha recalls that this mill was at one time powered by the river. it had a square smokestack.
. The next mill was in Brattleboro, Windham Co., Vermont. In 1930, J. Greely's nephew, Laurence, was drowned in the river near the mill when he fell from a railroad bridge while fishing.
. About 1930, J. Greely moved to his last mill in Greylock, Berkshire County, northwestern Massachusetts. Greylock is now part of the town of North Adams. When Hattie Died in 1931, Printha and Gertrude went to live again with their father in North Adams. The family lived in a big white house, on the corner across from the mill, at 443 State Road.
From the Charlottetown, Prince Edward I. "Morning Guardian" newspaper of 27 Aug 1902 : "On Friday evening August 15th 1902, at the residence of J.J. Meyer Esq., Yarmouth Maine [this would be the father of Minnie Meyer, wife of Hattie's brother / uncle, Wesley], Mr. J. Greely Mansfield, foreman of the Yarmouth Cotton Factory, was married to Miss Victoria H. Murray adopted daughter of Charles Murray of Frederickton P.E.I. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C.A. Brooks, pastor of the Methodist Church. . . . "
. This marriage was about 15 months after the death of Joseph's first wife. Joseph had two children under ten years of age at that time.
Joseph's funeral notice from the 15 September 1932 edition of the "North Adams Transcript" newspaper:
. "Funeral Services for Joseph G. Mansfield, superintendent of GreyMill A. in Greylock, of the Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates, Inc., for the past two years, who died early yesterday morning, will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock at his late home, 433 State Road. Rev. David W. Reid, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate. In the afternoon, the body will be taken to Yarmouth, Me., his native town, leaving here on the "Minute Man" of the B. & M. railroad. Foremen at the Greylock mill will escort the body from the home to the train.
. The Greylock mill which is to be closed tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock for the funeral of Gilbert T. Thompson of Adams, chairman of the board of directors of the corporation, who died on Tuesday night, will remain closed until after the funeral services for Mr. Mansfield."
The grave markers for J. Greely and for his wives, Addie & Hattie, are located, together in a row of identical stones, in the Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth, just a few feet from the maintenance shed.
. The US census for 1900 (Yarmouth Town, sup dist 109, enumeration dist 85) (Ancesty.com image 9 of 91) has Joseph listed as head of household, born Jan 1871, married for 10 years. He, father, & mother all born in Maine. Occupation listed, but I can't make it out. Renting a house.

From the 1909 "East Suburban Directory" (thanks to Alan Hall of Orr's Island, whom I met at the Yarmouth Historical Society):

And the business entry:
. Royal River Mfg Co, J. Greely Mansfield mgr, cotton yarn, twine and seamless bags, Bridge [Street]
The 1910 census for ED 118, Yarmouth, Cumberland Co., Maine (Ancestry.com image 13 of 22), on Main Street (exact address not given):

The 1920 census for dist. 98, Niles City, Berrien Co., Michigan (Ancestry.com image 14 of 31), erroneously enumerates Joseph Greely Mansfield as GEORGE G. MANSFIELD, at 202 South Lincoln Avenue, homeowner with no mortgage, age 46 [an error - should be 49], he & parents born in Maine, superintendent, cotton mill.
. Hattie, wife, age 34, she & parents born in English Canada
. Charles, son, age 16, born in Maine
. Nellie, dau., age 13, born in Maine
. Viola, dau., age 9, born in Maine

The 1930 census for district 4, Brattleboro, Windham Co., Vermont (Ancestry.com image page 49 of 57):
. Mansfield, Joseph G., renting for $27 per month at 60 Oak Grove Ave., not owning a radio, age 59, first married at age 20, he & parents born in Maine, superintendent, cotton mill, not a veteran.
. Rebecca E., wife, age 43, first married at age 22, she & parents born in New Jersey.
. Lawton, Lillian , stepdaughter, age 21, married, first married at age 16, she & parents born in New Jersey, inspector, cotton mill.
. Barbara, granddaughter [Rebecca's], age 4 7/12, she & father born in Massachusetts, mother born in New Jersey.
. While on vacation in Yarmouth in 2001, I attempted to discover where exactly J. Greely and his family resided while living there. J. Greely's daughter, Printha recalled that her sister Nellie (my grandmother, born 1906) was born in what they called the "big house", which was memorable in that It had a large barn, made of mahogany, just a few feet away from it. The barn was exceptionally clean and never had animals in it. Viola was born (1910) in the "little house", which is now a part of the Yarmouth Academy. Printha remembers that the big house was still standing in 1931, but that the little house had burned down.
. Associating this information with the 1904 town register entry mentioned above, I went to the Yarmouth Historical Society and found a map, drawn in 1910, showing the owner's names of all the houses in the town. On the edge of town on West Main Street there was a house owned by "R. Merrill est.". It seems likely that J. Greely and his family may have been boarding at the house.
. I drove to the area and found a large house with a very large barn a few feet from it with the date "1890" written on it. I later showed a photo of it to Printha and she said it looked just as she had remembered it. I spoke to the present owner of the house. He was familiar with the history of the house and did not think that it had any connection with the Merrill Family. He did mention, however, that a couple houses down the street was the "Captain Merrill House". He also said that in years past many of the houses had large barns next to them, but most have been torn down over the years.
. I went back to the Yarmouth Historical Society and discovered that the Captain Ruben Merrill house is at the present address of 233 West Main Street and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the few homes with a black wrought iron fence around it. Many homes had this feature in years gone by, but almost all of the fences were melted down for the iron over the years.
. I think it likely that this was the "big house" that Nellie Mansfield was born in.

. ÊGroveville, Mercer County (Hamilton Township): Nearest station, Yardville, on the Camden & Amboy Railroad, distance three-quarters of a mile. Twenty passenger trains in and out daily. Population, 300. Banking town, Bordentown or Trenton, distance respectively three and six miles. Money order post office; telegraph and telephone. Express service, Adams Company.
. This village has one public school and one church, Methodist Episcopal. Fire protection is furnished by the fire brigade with pumps and hose of a large local factory. Manufactories would be welcomed, but no special inducements are offered to attract them, as all the resident population who work for wages is now employed in existing factories. The factories now in operation are:
. Morris & Co., cotton duck; employ 160 persons.
. Geo L. Borden, cut glass, employs 28 persons.
. Edward Borden, mince meat; employs 4 persons.
. There is also a manufactory of dyeing machines which is operated by Morris & Co. For further particulars address Geo. L. Borden or J. G. Mansfield, Groveville, N. J.

General Notes: Wife - Rebecca E. Beck Inman
. She is listed on the 1930 census as J. Greely's wife. The census gives her birth place, and that of her parents as New Jersey. She was listed as an inspector at the cotton mill. That census states that her age at her first marriage was 22. She was about 35 when she married J. Greely, so the census would indicate that she was married at least once before. Her stepdaughter, Printha, however, was under the impression that she had never been married before and that her daughter, Lillian, was illigitimate. According to Printha, Rebecca was known by the family as "Beck". Printha recalls that her last name was Inman. She was a domestic servant who moved in with the Mansfield family when they were living in New Jersey. She moved with the family to Niles, Michigan.
. Beck went with J. Greely when he moved to Stuyvesant Falls, New York to take a new cotton mill there. In 1922, J. Greely told his wife, Hattie (who was then living in South Bend, Indiana, just a few miles from Niles) that he would like to put things right and get back together with her. Hattie, whose pride was hurt, refused. A divorce was finalized and a week later J. Greely and Beck married in Stuyvesant Falls.
In her father's obituary in 1933, Rebecca is referred to as a survivor as "Mrs. J. G. Mansfield of Yardville [NJ]"
Patricia Inman emailed me a photo of Rebecca's head stone from the Methodist Church Cemetery in Groveville. It reads "Mother - Rebecca I. Mansfield - 1886-1944". Her stone is next to her daughter, Lillian's.
