Millinocket - Gloria M. Ferland, 80, wife of the late Melvin "Dick" Ferland, died Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at a Houlton health care facility. She was born July 14, 1927 in Millinocket, the daughter of Edwin and Evelyn (Handy) MacKenzie. Gloria was educated in East Millinocket schools, and was a graduate of Schenck High School. She was an undergraduate of Boston College with a Bachelor's Degree in English, and a graduate of the University of Maine with a phD in Reading. Gloria taught school in Millinocket for many years, and also for various colleges throughout the state. She returned to Millinocket and was the Director of Reading in the Millinocket School System, and also served on the School Board for several years. Gloria was recognized with many awards at local, state, and national levels for her efforts and accomplishments as an educator. Upon retiring from her career in education, Gloria opened her own business, Read Inn, in Millinocket, which specialized in helping people improve their reading and study skills and attain their G.E.D. She will be remembered by many people for her ability in teaching them how to read. Gloria is survived by a son, Wayne Ferland and his wife Elaine of Millinocket; two grandchildren, who were extremely special in Gloria's eyes, Brent Ferland of Bangor, and Ashley Ferland of Millinocket; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Tori Chappel and Marjorie Harrison. Gloria will also be missed by her very special caregivers, Kelly Coon and Nicki Fiske. Graveside services will be held 3 P.M. Friday, August 17 at the Millinocket Cemetery with the Rev. CAPT. JOSHUA RICHARDSON, second son of Nathaniel and Eunice (Putnam)
Richardson, of Salem;born there, Sept. 28, 1774; m. first, Nov., 1802,
Eunice Lander, b. 1778, dau. of Capt. Peter and Rebecca (Bronw) Lander,
of Salem. She died march 23, 1804. aged 26. "She was a lady of superior
intellectual endowments, and enjoyed an habitual cheerfulness, which
never forsook her during her twelve monthssickness." (Salem Gazette,
April 3, 1804.] Second, April 2, 1816, Ann (Hanford) Jones, dau. of
Thomas Hanford, Esq., of St. John, New Brunswick. She died Oct. 19,
1850, aged 63.
While yet a young man, he visited Europe twice. He spent some time in
France in 1796-7, and again in 1800-1. The influence of these visits on
his manners was manifest, during his whole subsequent life. While living
in Salem, Oct., 1798, he subscribed five hundred dollars to the fund for
building the frigate Essex at that port.
He came from Salem, his native place, to Portland, in Sept., 1801 and
in 1802, joined his brother Nathaniel in the store then lately built on
Richardson's wharf, where, and in its neighborhood, he continued to the
close of a long life. Steadily, industriously, and honorably, he
conducted a prosperous and remunerative business. He had great energy of
character, and was so prompt in the discharge of his own duties, and so
rigid in his requirements of duty from others, that he seemed, to persons
not familiar with him in his social hours, to be stern and severe. But
he possessed keen sensibility, and in private and domestic life was
affectionate, gentle and kind.
He was many years in the West India trade. Afterwards was treasurer
of the Portland Manufacturing Co., and president of the Manufacturers and
Traders Bank.
For twenty years he was very active in the municipal affaires of
Portland, as fire warden, superintendent of streets, and selectman; and
was a most efficient officer. He conducted the affairs ofthe town with
much ability and vigor. Two years, 1823 and 1824, he was a member of the
State Legislature. Whatever he undertook he faithfully performed. He
was a true and honorable man in all his dealings, and expected a like
return from others.
May 23, 1856. Joshua Richardson, his brother Israel Richardson, their

Eunice P. Richardson, Elizabeth D. Richardson [these four being children
of Jesse Richardson, deceased, a brother of Nathaniel and Joshua], Susan
C. Richardson, Ellen Octavia Low [grandchildren of Jesse], Edward Symmes
Lang Richardson, and the children of Charles Frederic Richardson, by
their guardian, purchased of the Richardson Wharf Company, by their
president, G. F. Shepley, the said wharf, and the land, etc. connected
therewith, corner of Fore and Bank Streets. [Cumb. Deeds, cclxxii. 104.]
Same day Israil Richardson, executor of the will of Mrs. Eunice (Dodge)
Richardson, widow of Jesse, sold her interest in said wharf, etc. [Cumb.
Deeds, cclxxii. 107.]
Joshua Richardson sold several parcels of land in Westbrook in 1841.
He died in Portland, Nov. 4, 1862, aged 88.

Richard and Ann Ingersoll came to Salem in 1629 with Higginson, arriving June 29. A letter from Matthew Craddock, Governor of the company, to Mr. Endicott commends "Richard Inkersall and Richard Haward" who with their families came from Bedfordshire, England. In the original list of householders receiving "House lotts graunted by ye town" (1638) Richard Ingersoll is given two acres, also 80 acres on the Cape Ann side. Later, there was "graunted Richard Ingersoll 30 acres of meadow in the greate meadow to be layd out by the towne." The old towne records state that "It is agreed that Rich’d Inkersall shall henceforth have one peny (a tyme to maintain the ferry) for every pson he doeth ferry over the north (ferry) river dureing the towns pleasure."
His will: I give to Ann my wife all my estate of land, goods, & chattells whatsoever except as followeth, viz.: I give to George Ingersoll my son six acres lying in the great meadow. Item I give to Nathaniel Ingersoll my youngest son a parcell of ground, which I bought of John P---, but if the said Nathaniel dy without issue of his body lawfully begotten, then the land aforesaid to be equally shared between John Ingersoll my son, & Richard Pettingill & William Haines my sons in law. I give to Bathsheba my youngest daughter two cowes. I give to my daughter Alice Walcott my house at town with 10 acres of upland and meadow after my wife’s decease. Witness Townsend Bishop. ; his R (mark) I mark I read this will to Richard Ingersoll & he acknowledged it to be his will. Signed: Jo, Endicott. Proved in court upon oath 2 January 1644-5. JOSHUA RICHARDSON, third son of Nathaniel and Mary Richardson, of
Woburn; born there, June 3, 1681; married Hannah-------.
He lived in Woburn. His will is dated Sept. 26, 1748, and mentions the
children whose names follow. His will was proved Nov. 28, 1748. He died
in Woburn, Nov. 5, 1748, in his sixty-eighth year [gravestone]. His
widowHannah died there, Dec. 27, 1768. Her will is dated Aug. 30, 1760,
and mentions also the same children.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON, only son of Joshuaand Hannah Richardson; born in
Woburn, Oct., 18, 1716; married, first, July 11, 1739, Eunice Jennison,
born 1719, dau. of Peter and Jane Jennison, of Sudbury. She was born in
Sudbury, but in the record of her marriage she is said to be of Weston,
because at that time her mother was the wife of Joseph Brooks, of
Weston. The date of her birth and her parentage are erroneously given in
Bond's Watertown Genealogies, p. 308, No. 37, and in the Vinton Memorial,
p. 393, and again in the Giles Memorial, p. 241, by the compiler of this
volume. She died two weeks after the birth of her last child, April 13,
1748, aged 29.
Joshua Richardson married, secondly, Abigail Carter, who outlived him
and died in Salem, about 1795.
He lived in Woburn, and died march 13, 1774,in his fifty-eighth year.

The Willis family of Sudbury connects John Willis, above, to a brother Nathaniel Willis and states that there were three other brothers that came to New England but at the time of article it appeared
that those three had no issue.
John Willis bought land in Duxbury from Abraham Blush 26 Nov 1638, 8 pounds 10 s sterling. Abraham Blush bought land which contained a dwelling house and 20 acres from Richard Moore 1 Nov 1637 called Eagle's Nest for 21 pounds. He sold the easterly half to John Willis with no mention of a house. John Willis sold his estate in Duxbury 1657 to William Paybody.

Second, Jan. 1833, MRS. HANNAH G. SANBORN, widowof Timothy Sanborn. She
died Nov. 29, 1872=1, aged 88 years. She had two daughters by her former
husband, who married two of Seth Richardson's sons, Amasa and John.
He lived in Attleborough a few years after marriage and removed thence
to Vassalborough, Me., on Kennebec River. He died Aub. 18, 1856, aged78.

As a young man Aaron went to Scarborough where his brothers George
and Elisha and sisters Sarah and Abigail had already gone. After
marrying, he and his wife moved to Machias where they had 11 children.

Aaron served as a private in Capt. Joseph Seavey's Company in the
defense of Machias and adjacent rivers in 1777. Then he re-enlisted and
served for 8 months under General Wadsworth in 1780. (Massachusetts
