Cecily Neville, Duchess of York (3 May 1415 ? 31 May 1495) was the mother of two Kings: Edward IV of England and Richard III of England.
Cecily Neville was a daughter to Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland and Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmorland. Her maternal grandparents were John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster and Katherine Swynford. John of Gaunt was the third son of Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault.
Cecily was called "the Rose of Raby" (because she was born at Raby Castle in Durham, Kingdom of England) and "Proud Cis" because of her pride and a temper that went with it. Historically she is also known for her piety. She herself signed her name "Cecylle".
Duchess of York
At the age of ten in 1425, Cecily's father betrothed her to Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York the leader of the House of York in the Wars of the Roses, who was 14 at the time. Soon after that the Earl Neville died in battle. The couple probably lived in the household of king Henry VI until 1437 when they were officially married. Their daughter Anne was born in August 1439 in Northamptonshire.
When Richard became a king's lieutenant and governor general of France in 1441 and moved to Rouen, Cecily moved with him. Their son Henry was born at February but died soon after.
The future king Edward was born in Rouen in April 28, 1442 and immediately baptized. The date of the birth would be later used as a claim of bastardy, because the Duke had been away in the calculated day of conception and the baby's baptism was a simple affair. Edward could have just been born early and baptized in haste due to fears of death in infancy.
Around 1454, when Richard began to resent the influence of Edmund Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset, Cecily spoke with Queen consort Margaret of Anjou on his behalf. When Henry VI suffered a nervous breakdown later in the year, Richard of York established himself as a Protector.
After the outbreak of the War of the Roses, Cecily remained in Lodlow even when Richard fled to Ireland and Continental Europe. They were probably in the custody of Cecily's sister Anne Neville, wife of Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham. At the same time she surreptitiously worked for the cause of the House of York.
When a parliament began to debate the fate of the lords of York in November 1459, Cecily travelled to London to plead for her husband. One contemporary commentator stated that she had reputedly convinced the king to promise a pardon if the Duke would appear in the parliament in eight days. This failed and Richard's lands were confiscated, but Cecily managed to gain an annual grant of £600 to support her and her children. In January 1460 she visited Kent and possibly talked about the forthcoming alliance with the representatives of the House of Kent.
After the Yorkist victory the next July, Cecily moved to London with her children and lived with John Paston. She carried the royal arms before Richard in triumph in London the next September. When Richard was officially accepted Henry VI's heir, Cecily became a queen-in-waiting and even received a copy of the English chronicle from the chronicler John Hardyng.
In the Battle of Wakefield (December 30, 1460), Lancastrians won a decisive victory. The Duke of York, their second son Edmund, Earl of Rutland and her brother Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury were among the casualties. Cecily sent her youngest sons to the court of Philip III, Duke of Burgundy. This forced Philip to ally with the Yorkists.
Mother of two Kings
Her eldest son Edward successfully continued the fight again the Lancastrians. When Cecily moved to Baynard's Castle in London, it became the Yorkist headquarters and when Edward defeated the Lancastrians, she became an effective Queen Mother.
During the beginning of the Edward's reign, Cecily appeared beside him and maintained her influence. In 1461 she revised her coat of arms to include the royal arms of England, hinting that her husband had been a rightful king. When Edward married Elizabeth Woodville, he built the new queen's quarters for his queen and let his mother to reside in the old quarters she was used to.
In 1469, Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, father-in-law of her son George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence, rebelled against the king. He also begun to spread rumours the Edward IV was a bastard and that his right father was an archer named Benbourne at Rouen. That would have meant that his brother was a rightful king. Neville had earlier made similar accusations against Margaret of Anjou. (William Shakespeare later used this claim in his Richard III).
Cecily Neville said little about the matter in public, despite of the fact that she was accused of adultery. She visited Sandwich, possibly trying to reconcile the parties. When the rebellion failed the first time, she invited Edward and George to London to reconcile them. Peace did not last long and in the forthcoming war she still tried to make peace between her sons.
By 1485 Cecily was alone. Her husband and three sons had died in The War of the Roses. She devoted herself to religious duties and her image of piety comes from those times.
Cecily Neville died in 1495. She was buried with a papal indulgence.

2nd Lord Neville of Raby.
He was aged 40 or more at his father's death. He had a long career of
military and public service. He was taken prisoner with his younger
brothers in 1319 in a border fray by James "the Black" Douglas, earl of
Douglas. He was ransomed and fought in further campaigns, being the hero
of the battle of Durham, or Neville's Cross, October 17, 1346, when he
took prisoner King David of Scotland. A dispute which began in the
lifetime of his father, Randolph, was revived regarding the tenure of
Raby Castle. The charter of 1131 issued by Prior Algar stipulated merely
for the payment of an annual rent of four pounds, but it had become the
custom for the lord of Raby to offer to the prior of Durham, on St.
Cuthbert's Day, a stag, the presentation being accompanied by the blowing
of horns. Randolph had claimed the right of being entertained on these
occasions with as large a retinue as he chose to bring, who were to serve
him in place of the prior's servants. The prior denied the right and
refused to accept the stag on such terms, whereupon a bitter quarrel
ensued which did not end in words. The monks, being unarmed, seized the
altar candlesticks and using them as weapons, forced Lord de Neville's
retainers to retreat, leaving the stag behind them. In this dispute, John
de Baliol of Barnard's Castle sided with the prior. Ralph must have
subsequently made his peace with the prior, since he presented a very
rich vestment to Durham Cathedral and was buried there, the first layman
to be so honored. "The first layman that ever had lycense to be buried
[there] was Raphe Lord Nevile alias Daw-Raby. . .and John Lord Nevile,
his sonne, with theire wives, whowas admitted to be buried in the body
of the said Church betwixt two pillersin the south angle of the same. .
.They had the honhour to be buried for thegreat battayle they wonne at
Durham, where they tooke David Kinge of Scots prisoner, and where his
brother was slayne, with many more of the nobility of Scotland, soe itt
may seeme that the Scots defaced their tombes in remembrance of that."
His tomb, although terribly mutilated by the Scottish prisoners confined
in the cathedral in 1650, which formerly stood in the now abolished
Neville chantrey, may still be seen between the pillars which divide the
south aisle from the nave.

First Percy to hold the Earl of Northumberland title.
Henry de Percy, 4th Lord Percy, of Alnwick, a distinguished military
commander in the reign of Edward III, who, assisting as marshal of
England at the coronation of King RichardII, was advanced on the same
day, 6 July, 1377, to the Earldom of Northumberland, with remainder to
his heirs generally, and, like a barony in fee, transmissible, it would
appear, to female as well as male heirs. He married 1st, 1358, Margaret,
daughter of Ralph, Lord Nevil, of Raby, and had issue. Henry, Thomas,
Ralph, Alan, and Margaret. The earl married 2ndly, Maud, sister and heir
of Anthony, Lord Lucy, which Anthony settled upon his lordship and his
heirs, the honour and castle of Cockermouth with other great estates, on
condition that her arms should be forever quarterd with those of the
Percys. In the 7th year of Richard II [1384], the earl having been
elected one of the knights of the Garter, the king bestowed upon him the
robes of the order out of the royal wardrobe. In some years afterwards,
however, being proclaimed a traitor, and his land declared forfeited by
King Richard, his lordship, in conjunction with his son, Sir Henry Percy,
surnamed Hotspur, and Henry, Duke of Lancaster, accomplished the
dethronement of that monarch and placed the crown upon the head of Henry,
Duke of Lancaster, under the title of Henry IV. In requital, the king
gave Percy the Isle of Man, by the tenure of carrying in the left hand
the sword (which he wore when he landed in Holderness) at the coronation
of himself and his successors. Against dissatisfied with the governemnt,
the ducke is charged with concerting the rebellion, in which his son,
Hotspur, and his brother, the Earl of Worcester, engaged, in 1403, for
transferring the sceptre to Mortimer, Earl of March, then a boy. Of these
two eminent persons, Sir Henry Percy, the renowned Hotspur, fell
performing prodigies of valour, at Battle-field, near Shrewsbury, 21
July, 1403, and Thomas Percy, Earl of Worcester, was beheaded after the
battle at Shrewsbury. The Earl of Northumberland fell subsequently (29
February, 1407-8), in arms against the king, at Bramham Moor, near
Haslewood, when his honour became forfeited under an attainder, but were
restored, in 1414, to his grandson (Hotspur's only son), Henry de Percy,
2nd Earl of Northumberland.

1st/4th Earl of Northumberland, 4th Lord Percy of Alnwick. He was brought
up at court by his uncle, the first duke of Lancaster. In August, 1359,
he was with the duke in France on the expedition which terminatedin the
peace of Bretigny. He was knighted before February 4, 1361/62. He wasa
Knight of the Garter about 1366. Until the summoer of 1372 he was
occupied in the North, with brief intervals at court. He attended Edward
III to Flanders in July, 1373, and took part in the duke of Lancaster's
historic march across France to Bordeaux, August to December, 1373. In
Parliament he was reckoned on the side of reform; his sympathies,
however, veered. In 1376 he was created marshal of England, and he was
summoned to Parliament as such on December 1, 1376. He was created earl
of Northumberland at the coronation of Richard II on July 16, 1377. From
1377 to 1389 he was mostly engaged on military and administrative
business on the Border. For nearly 20 years various causesof discontent
had been gradually estranging him from Richard II, and he played a
prominent part in procuring Richard's abdication, and probably his
subsequent death, and the elevation of Henry IV. On September 30, 1399,
the day of Henry's accession, he was created constable of

Henry Percy plotted to de- throne Henry IV.
He was knighted by Edward III at Windsor on April 23, 1377, along with
the future kings Richard II and Henry IV, who were almost exactly his own
age. He first bore arms at the recapture of Berwick by his father in
December, 1378. When travelling in Prussia in 1383, he hurried back to
Flanders to take part in the expected fighting there in the bishop of
Norwich's "crusade," and in that year he began his official work on the
Border, as a commissioner to receive money due from the King of Scotland.
He was appointed warden of the Eastern March on July 30, 1384, and again,
for three years, on April 12, 1388. He attended Richard II on his
expedition into Scotland in 1385 and was called by the Scots "Haatspore"
owing to his restless activity as warden of the Marches in repressing the
inroads of the Scottish borderers. He was in command of a squadron at sea
against the French in August, 1387. He was Knight of the Garter before
April 23, 1388. He wasthe English commander at the battle of Otterburn
(Chevy Chase) on August 10,1388, where Douglas, the Scottish commander,
was slain and Percy himself wastaken prisoner. He was speedily ransomed.
In 1399 he acted with his father in the proceedings which placed Henry IV
on the throne. He was made Knight of the Bath on March 17, 1399/1400, on
the eve of the coronation. The Welsh campaign of 1401 was put in charge
of Hotspur and the young Prince of Wales, and he was made King's
lieutenant in north and south Wales on March 31, 1402. With his father,
he won the notable victory of Homildon Hill over the Scots on September
24, 1402, at which Douglas was taken prisoner. The question of the
ransoming of Douglas was added to other causes of friction with the King.
ByJune, 1403, Hotspur was openly marching with about 4000 northern
rebels through Lancashire and Cheshire with a view to meeting Glendower,
but was forced with only his own inferior force to fight the King. Henry
IV intercepted and defeated him, and he was killed at the battle of
Shrewsbury on July 21, 1403.He was initially buried at Whitchurch, but,
upon a rumor that he was still alive, he was disinterred, his head sent
to York, and his quarters to London, Newcastle, Bristol, and Chester.
These were delivered to his widow in November, and buried in York
Minster. In January, 1403/04, Hotspur's insurrection was declared treason
and forfeiture followed thereupon.

Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury (1400 ? December 31, 1460) was a Yorkist leader during the early parts of the Wars of the Roses.
He was the son of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, by his second wife, Joan Beaufort, a daughter of John of Gaunt. Despite being a younger son, he was able to make a great marriage, to Alice Montagu, Countess of Salisbury, probably due to his royal descent on his mother's side.
After his marriage (1420) Salisbury was given high posts in the north of England, including Warden of the Western March of Scotland 1420 - 1435. He was also Constable at the coronation of his cousin Henry VI.
However Salisbury turned to the cause of Richard, Duke of York, who made him Lord Chancellor in 1455. When King Henry tried to assert his independence and dismiss Richard as Protector, Salisbury joined him in fighting at the First Battle of St Albans, claiming that he was acting in self-defence. After the Battle of Blore Heath, in which he was notably successful, Salisbury escaped to Calais, having been specifically excluded from a royal pardon. He was beheaded the day after the Battle of Wakefield.
Amongst Salisbury's children were Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick and John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu.
