The First Richmonds Information found on Ancestry.com message boarddated 2/28/200 by Timothy Richmond timrich1952@yahoo .com :
Richmond Castle was used throughout history by prominent people. Two Scottish Kings (another link to our Scottish heiri tage), as well as, one English King spent time within the walls of Richmond Castle. The Scottish King William the Lio n was there shortly after he was captured at Alnwickin 1174. David II was imprisoned in Richmond Castle after his defea t at Neville's Cross. David was the son of Robert the Bruce. He had married Joanna daughter of Edward II of England i n 1328 and sought to claim all of England under his flag. He was imprisoned for eleven years until a large enough ranso m could be paid to the English King. English King Charles I, was held there after his defeat by the Scots in 1647. He h ad become King in 1625 at the death of his father James I. He had attempted to force the English forms of worship upo n the Scots, he had many executed and banished their families members from Scotland and England. He also abolished th e power of Parliament and raised taxes to pay for his troops in Scotland. As a result a Civil War broke out in Englan d with Lord Oliver Cromwell leading the Parlimentarians. Charles' troops were defeated and they fled to Scotland , ther e the Scots captured him and returned him to Richmond Castle as a prisoner where he was later tried and beheaded. His r eign more than any other event started the Richmonds of both Scotland and England on their journeys to the American Col onies. John Richmond of Taunton Mass. as well as the Scottish Richmonds of Virginia and the Carolinas. A plaque close t o the southeast corner commemorates the fact that Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, was a residen t there from 1908-1910. It is said that Richmond Castle is the oldest stone-built castle in England. This may be diffic ultto prove some 900 years afterwards. It is however, the oldest Englishstone castle still surviving in our time. One b ranch of the Richmonds continued to live at the castle and others inherited nearby Yorkshiremanors. The ancestors of th e early Northern sections of the American Richmond Family are able to prove lineage from Yorkshire and Wiltshire in th e 1400's. Any connection between the Scottish Richmonds and those of Richmond Castle have as yet remained unprovable. T raditionally, though not proven, it is assumed that there are members of the family who migrated to Scotland during it s many Clan Wars with England. These started when McBeth was defeated and slain in 1056 by Malcolm III. Malcolm III tho ught he could increase his control of the British Isle and invaded the North of England. William the Conquerer invade d Scotland inretaliation in 1072, only a year after the founding of Richmond Castle byAlan Rufus de Richmond. It can b e assumed that Alan would have led at least part of the attack since he was a cousin and Warlord of the Norman Conquere r. Malcolm quickly agreed to a truce, but there was some disagreement of its terms. The Normans claimed control of al l of Scotland, while the Scots said it pertained to only twelve Manors in England proper. This led to another War in wh ich William Rufus slew theScottish King Malcolm in 1093. Then in 1189 for a sum of 10,000 marks, Richard the LionHearte d , the then English Monarchy agreed to cease all claims to former Scottish lands in order to finance his great Crusad e to free the Holy Land from the Muslim ruler Saladin. These were the days of Robin Hood of story and myth. Surely Rich monds were on this third great crusade as leaders and knights of England. The habit of awarding feudallands may have le ft some of Alan Rufus' children in control of lands inScotland at the time of its return to the Scots. William the Lio n thus became heir to the Scottish throne. His son Alexander II suceeded William, who was followed by Alexander the III . He died in 1286 leaving his main heir as Margaret, daughter of the King of Norway. She died in passage from there b y ship and a feud started between John Balliol and Robert the Bruce for the Crown of Scotland. Edward I of England inte rvened and helped Balliol gain control leading to the Wars depicted in the movie BRAVE HEART, where Sir William Wallac e of Ellerslie was cruelly drawn and quartered by the English King Edward in 1305. Robert Bruce the III continued the s truggle and rioted the English at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Bruce died in 1329 and a new war erupted in whic h the Scots at last gave up the struggle to claim their own land independent of England. During this time and for the n ext 200 years the Crown of England was share by English and Scot alike, the most famous the Stuarts. During these year s prominent English (Norman and Saxon) families controlled large estates in Scotland and thus it would only be logica l to have sent some of sons of the influential Richmond families to Scotland. During the fourth Crusade, the European K nights sacked the Christian city of Constantinople. This led to a split between the Catholic Church --Roman Catholic Gr eek Orthodox Catholics. The split started many christians to questioning which was the real Church. The debate over th e next 200 years led to the Spainish Inquisition and Protestant reform movements. By the 1600's the struggle was dramat ic as to which was the best religion. Charles I of England offended most protestants of English and Scottish parishes b y forcing them to uphold church ritual and to use a formal prayer book. In 1637 Charles tried to force the Scottish Pre sbyterians to accept a version of the Anglican Prayer Book. A Scottish Revolt erupted thus Charles sent in the Britis h Cavaliers to quail it by any method necessary including public execution. Many Presbyterians were later banished fro m Scotland and England becauseof their parts played in struggles for their religious beliefs. Some fled to Ireland an d arranged ship passage from there to the Americas and Australia. In the 1600's a John Richmond was killed and becam e a Religious Martyr there. A stone dedicated to the memory of him and others stands in a Glasgow churchyard. A list o f the banished ones of the time listed an Andrew Richmond from the nearby area of Auchinleck. Also listed were David Cu rrie and John Wylie, whose descendants married with the Richmond descendants in the Virginia and Carolina colonies. T o pay for histroops in Scotland, Charles called the Parliament into session and ordered them to appropriate taxes. Thi s led to the English Civil War which led to Charles' trial and execution. It also led to the death of Henry Richmond a t the hands of his brother John Richmond of Taunton Mass..The Scotland Richmonds who fled Europe because of religious f reedom settle in the southern states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland and Georgia. Andrew Richmon d settled in the Maryland area by 1704 and John Richmond is shown on Colonial documents as living there as early as 173 4. He or another John Richmond died in Augusta CO Virginia in 1753. All of the Richmonds of Scotland did not migrate a t that time however, for Archibald Murray Richmond was born in 1828 atAuchinleck, Scotland and came to the U.S.A. jus t prior to our own American Civil War, arriving during the 1850's. Donald C. Richmond, adescendant of Archibald's, trav eled back to Scotland and reported that many Richmond tombstones are to be found at a cemetary at Old Comnock,Ayr-shir e Scotland. One of the more ritzy spots there is still called Richmond Heights.

THE RICHMOND FAMILY, PAGE 2
He probably left England about 1635, and was one of the purchasers of Taunton in 1637. He was away from Taunton much o f his life, - through the records he is known to have been at Newport and other places, - but he returned to Taunton an d died there.
John Richmond, the immigrant, was born in 1594; He came to America from Ashton Keynes, WIltshire, England. He probabl y left England about 1635, and was one of the purchasers of Tauton in 1637. Undoubtedly he was married before he came t o this country. He married Elizabeth Nichols in England. He was away from Taughton, Massachusetts much of his life;
through the records he is known to have been at Newport R.I. and other places, but he returned to Taunton and died ther e March 20,1664 at age 70. They also used the surname of Webb for about five generations. John came to America from th e Richmond Manor House in 1635.He left a will in which he named Four children. His will in on file and a copy is give n in the Richmond Genealogy. John Richmond, the emigrant, came to America from Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire England, He pro bably left England about 1635 and came over on a trading=vessel. He owned six shares in the original purchase of Taunto n, Massachusetts in 1637. He was known to have spend some time in Newport, Rhode Island and built a mansion on Mill Bro ok.
tradition leads us to believe that he returned to England from 1643 to 1655 and engaged in the civil ward. The family w as large land-owners in the easterly part of Tauton, and gave to a village in that section the name of Richmondtown.(So urce; The Richmond family 1594-1896 and pre-American ancestors 1040-1594 by Johsua Bailey Richmond). family tradition a lways heard John Richmond referred to as Col. John, and that he was engaged in the English civil wars, In his Will is t he following bequest; I give and bequest unto my eldest son John all my writings* in my chest which is in my son-in-la w Edward Rew's house. This treasure, now lost to us would undoubtedly remove the mystery which surrounds his life and f urnish us with facts where we have only traditions. John and his sons, are known to have had excellent educations. Tha t their father signed his will by his mark was undoubtedly the result of feebleness, as he refers to his writings in th e document, which was made shortly before his death. John Richmond of Taunton was a large landholder and quite wealth y for that time. His sons were educated and refined gentlemen. John Jr. settled on the land of his father in Taunton an d was prominent in every important transaction connected with the town. Edward lived in Newport, Rhode Island. These ea rly pioneers were a hardy race. of powerful frame and large stature, They were noted for great strength, and proud of t heir skill with the axe.
Individual:
RICHMOND The Richmond family had its origin in Brittany, the name being derived from the French "riche" and "monte," an d in early records it was spelled Rychmonds, Richemont and finally Richmond. The family is still to be found in Franc e and the name is common in England. The English coat-of-arms is: Argent, a cross patence fleury azure between four mul lets gules. Crest: A tilting spear argent headed or, broken in three parts, one piece erect, the other two in saltire , enfiled with a ducal coronet. Motto: "Resolve well and persevere." The progenitor of the English family came with Wil liam the Conqueror in 1066, and he was the first duke of Richmond.
(I) John Richmond, the immigrant ancestor, is said to have been born in Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire, England, where the ol d Richmond Manor House is still standing. He was baptized there in 1597. He came to America about 1636 and was one of t he purchasers of Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1637. George Richmond, possibly a cousin, was engaged in business in Saco,
Maine, in 1635, and John may have been there also, before coming to Taunton. John is mentioned in the court records, Ma rch 7, 1636, showing that at that time he was engaged in trade and it is thought that he may have returned to England . He returned to Taunton, however, and died there March 20, 1664, aged seventy years. His name is often on the court
records in 1636 and 1637. He was of Newport for a time and one of the commissioners from that town in 1656. He took th e oath of fidelity in Taunton before 1640. The part of the town where he owned land is still called Richmondtown. His w ill was dated December 14, 1663, and proved October 29, 1669. Children: John; Edward, born 1632; Sarah, 1636; Mary,
1639.

General Notes: Husband - Owain Gwynedd
Alias:<ALIA> Prince of Gwynedd /1137-70/
King: 1137-1170.
The death of HenryI in 1135 was the signal for more vigorous and more hos
tile policies by the Welsh, though firm action by Stephen (the king who su
cceeded Henry) and the marcher lords held the promise of successful defenc
e. Henry II succeeded Stephen in December 1154, determined to restore auth
ority to the kingdom and to repair the damage caused by civil strife and t
he lack of a strong central administration. By 1157 he was ready to turn h
is attention to Wales.
Two princescarried Wales through these difficult years, Owain Gwyne
dd in the north and Rhys ap Gruffydd in south Wales. Both were aware of t
he complex problems to be faced: to deal with rival Welsh dynasties, to de
al with marcher lords, and to live in the shadow of a rich and powerful ne
ighbor. Owain gauged the political realities of the day quickly and, howev
er often he had to yield, he did not lose the initiative.
Owain Gwynedd, Prince of Gwynedd 1137-70, was born circa 1109. In 11
37 he succeeded his father Gruffydd ap Cynan (1081-1137) to the kingd
om of Gwynedd, which covered most of north Wales. While England was engag
ed in civil war, Owain used his skill as statesman and soldier to extend h
is frontiers. In 1157 Henry II led his first campaign against Owain, b
ut it ended in a truce. He was required to do homage to Henry but it was n
ot longbefore Owain was acting with complete independence. When Mad
og ap Maredudd died in 1160, he attacked Powys and extended his influen
ce to the east. Six years later, the Council of Woodstock attempted to red
uce the Welsh princes from client status to that of dependent vassalage, a
nd the subsequent uprising was led by Owain and Rhys ap Gruffydd of sou
th Wales. Henry's second attempt at subduing Wales failed ignominiously a
nd left Owain free to capture Basingwerk and Rhuddlan castles (1166-67
). In 1168 he set foot on negotiations with Louis VII of France to bui
ld an alliance between Gwynedd and France against their common enemy. It w
as a course which required great finesse and firm judgement. In one direct
ion it pointed to a policy which would be used to good effect by later rul
ers of Gwynedd, the search for recognition and an alliance inEurope. Havi
ng openly defied Henry in 1168 by offering to help Louis, Owain maintain
ed his independent position until his death. He left behind him a reputati
on of wisdom and magnanimity.
The reign of Owain Gwynedd marks the most peaceful period of Welsh indepen
dence, when the native princes absorbed many of the current European refor
ming ideas and adapted the more effective structures of both church and st
ate to their own society. Monastic foundations were encouraged, diocesan b
oundaries defined, and many stone churches built. Motte-and-bailey earthwo
rk castles identical to those built earlier by the Norman invaders were n
ow erected by the princes as the centers of many of their personal estate
s. Two of Owain's sons are credited with building the first stone castl
es in Gwynedd towards the end of the 12th century. The tragedy, recurre
nt in Welsh history, was that Owain was not followed immediately by a stro
ng ruler. Upon his death in 1170, open warfare broke out between his son
s: Dafydd and Rhodri killed their elder half-brother, Hywel, and for the n
ext 20 years Gwynedd was divided between them and their kinsmen. Gwynedd a
nd Wales would not see another strong leader until Llywelyn the Great exte
nded his control over most of Wales in the later part of the century.
Upon Owain's death his lands were divided between his sons, of whom Maelgw
yn inherited Anglesey. Civil War broke out from 1170-74, from which emerg
ed two victors who eventually divided the kingdom between them. Another so
n, Cynan, succeeded in retaining his land at Merioneth and briefly re-esta
blishing a ruling dynasty there.

!NOTE: Please note that the census gives C. as the middle initial. I have no proof that his middle name was King or it may be that he gave the name King and the Census taker spelled it with a C. Census takers in those days were usually people who were otherwise unemployed or they would not have been available to take the census for 3 or 4 months so were usually not the best educated people.

!Buried: One source says he may have died or been buried in Wheterball, Trempealeau, WI. 1884. Since it is a resort on the Missippi River above La Crosse, it is possible that they retired there. My map does not show a Wheterball nor a Williamstown now but it does show Trempealeau. Another source says Lowell.
The last record for them both appears to be the 1880 census entry where they are living with Eunice. There is a land transfer from Catharine to Eunice dated 5 Nov 1881 which is the same land (1/2 acre) obtained in 1878 by Catherine from Luzern Weeks with a mention of "Old Man Owen." Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the record only my own abstract. Does this signify that they left the county? Or does it mean, Alvah had died? I did find Eunice in the 1900 census for Trempealeau County as a lodger in a rooming house but no Catherine. Are you going to be in one place long enough to get the 1885 and/or 1895 Trempealeau Co, WI state census on film? I'm not sure if that would answer the question of where they are or not. They do not turn up in the 1900 census index but then neither does Eunice! This is from Alma Greenwood

Martin married Josephine Tuthill , a native of Warrensville, Ohio. Her father died and her mother remarried and moved to Wisconsin to raise her children. Josephine was pregnant when her husband left for military service. She went to stay with her mother to have the baby who was my grandfather.
Martin had a gun accident as a youth that injured his trigger finger so he couldn't serve in the Iron Brigade with his brother, Levi but joined the Union Army in another capacity during the Civil War and on March 2, 1865, he joined Company H, 51st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry with the rank of Corporal and was sent with his regiment in pursuit of General Price's Confederate army through Missouri and Kansas. His regiment intersepted the Rebel forces at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served until the close of the war and was mustered out with an honorable discharge ant Madison, Wisconsin. He returned to Dodge County and farmed for ten years, then bought land in Plum Creek Township, Burt, Kossuth County, Iowa.
Older brothers, Peter and John, who were grown when their parents moved to Wisconsin, moved to Missouri to homestead and since they were in a State that was sympathetic to the Confederate cause, Peter went back to Lowell, WI and joined the Union Army there. Peter was killed in the Battle of Champion Hills, Vicksburg, MS. John served in the Confederate Army.
Harold Grover remembers that he asked his grandpa once what he would do if he met his brother in battle and Martin said "I'd shoot him just like any other confederate soldier."
Farm purchased from D.P. Mayer on 10 July, 1882, filed Nov. 14, 1882, Warrenty Book 13, pag e 513, the NE 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Sec. 4, Twp. 96, Range 28, near Burt, Kossuth Co., Iowa. Martin had paid $12. per acre for the original 120 acres he purchased while on a trip to Iowa prior to 1874.
He brought his family by covered wagon with two teams of horses, two colts, a dog and cat in 14 days from Lowell, Wisconsin. The rest of their possessions were sent by train to Algona , the county seat of Kossuth county. Each morning of their journey, they thrilled to the sight of a brilliant comet between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. daily. There was a small house on the land and later, they enlarged it into a fine home.
Martin was a stockholder in the Farmer's Elevator Company and the Burt National Bank.
Martin was a fine farmer and had a good sense of humor and many friends. In 1901, they retired to their newly-purchased home in Burt, the first house south of the Presbyterian Church . Martin played the fife in a lively manner.
Martin was tall, slim, curly hair and a moustache.
Buried: September 5, 1917 in the Burt, Iowa cemetary.
Cause of Death: Prostititis and Cystitis. Dr. W. T. Peters attending Physician.

Comrade Owen Died at Home in Burt
The people of Burt were shocked a week ago Tuesday to learn that Comrade Martin A. Owen had passed away during the previous night of Bright's Disease. It was known that Mr. Owen was failing and by some few that he was confined to his bed but none that the end was so near.
Obituary
Martin A. Owen was born in Oswego Co., New York, February 2, 1839 and later moved with his parents onto a farm in Dodge county, Wisconsin. On this farm his childhood and young manhood were spent. He was united in marriage February 17, 1861 to Miss Josephine Tuthill also of Dodge County. Shortly after his marriage, the Civil War broke out and Mr. Owen enlisted in Company II, 51st Volunteer Infantry in which he served his country faithfully until the end of the war. For a number of years thereafter, Mr. And Mrs. Owen farmed in their native county. In 1882 they came to Plum Creek township, Kossuth County, Iowa, where they bought land and entered the great field of agriculture again. In 1892 they gave up farming and moved to Burt. To them were born two children, Lewis M. and Mrs. Nettie V. Grover, both of Burt. Besides his wife and children, Mr. Owen leaves a brother, Lewis* Owen and a sister, Mrs. Adelina* Bunker, both of Redwood Falls, Minnesota and four grand children to mourn his passing. All were present at the funeral except the brother as also his niece, Mrs. C. W. Morgan of Danvenport. Two traits in the deceased's character marked him as good hearted, his passionate love of flowers and plants which he was ever cultivating and giving away and his love of music as evidenced by his enjoyment of the fife. The funeral services were held Wednesday from the house. Rev. A. J. Tritt having charge of the services and the remains were laid at rest in the Burt cemetery. The sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of all in their trouble.
*It appears that there is a mistake in the obituary since the brother who survived him was named Levi while his son was named Lewie and the sister was Angelina Merilla Owen who was married to Hiram Bunker.
General Notes: Child - Peter Owen
Military: Peter fought on the Union side during the Civil War and died in Champion Hill battle in Vicksburg, Mississippi during the War. He and his brother John had moved with their parents to Wisconsin in 1841 but had then moved to Missouri sometime before the war. Later, Peter moved back to Wisconsin.
Widow's pension and Military Record: Private Company "K", 29th Wisconsin Volunteers, enrolled 21 August 1862 in Lowell, WI., died in Champion Hills, MS in battle; gives date of birth, names of children and was witnessed by Kilbourn and Angeline Owen Rounds on September 5, 1866.
General Notes: Child - Betsy Owen
Betsy may have been named Elizabeth or Rebecca or similar name since Betsy may have been a nickname.
Betsy and her baby son, John died in a Cholera Epidemic in St. Joseph, MO and were buried there.
General Notes: Child - John Owen
John and his brother served in the Confederate Army during the Civil war while younger brothe rs, Martin and Levi served in the Union Army.
Mrs. Leonard Sanders wrote Zada Smith in February, 1978 to obtain information about her famil y. She said that her grandfather, John, had died when her father was 7 years old. I don't k now whether Zada ever found out more. She did write to other relatives to see what she coul d learn. It could be that this John had a son, John and that he was her grandfather since w e have no clue as to her age in 1978. We knew he married but not anything about children, et c. since he had been a confederate like his brother Peter since they were older and had move d to Missouri before the war and the rest of the family had all been northerners.
General Notes: Child - Eunice Florence Owen
Eunice was short, rotund, with short grey curly hair and looked a lot like her brothers, Martin and Levi in the face though built more like her mother. She smoked a corn cob pipe, or a clay pipe, sometimes. After dinner she would go out on the porch and sit on a straight kitchen chair, light up her pipe and puff away. Zada said she and her brother were always fascinated. "Imagine!! Seeing a WOMAN smoke!!"
It may be that Eunice was married to someone by the name of Knight also. Zada remembers a Eunice Owen Knight visiting her parents.

The funeral of William SPENCER who died last week Thursday was held from the M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. D. R. DUNN, assisted by Rev. S. W. INGHAM officiating. The G. A. R. of which the deceased was a member, and the W. R. C. each attended the body. Altho the weather was threatening, a large number of friends gathered to pay their last tribute to a much respected citizen. Wm. SPENCER was born at Louisville, Kentucky, February 8, 1848. When war broke out, altho too young to regularly enlist he gave his services in different ways until 1864 when he joined Co. H. of the Fourth Kentucky cavalry. Soon after the war he came to Wisconsin and was married to Miss Margaret BRAINARD at Whitehall. In the early eighties he moved to Medford, and for a long time was section foreman and was often given charge of the W. C. R. R. work train. Later he started a dray line, which however, he turned over to his sons in order to again take charge of R. R. construction crews. He was a quiet unassuming man who was never heard to say a word against anyone. Altho not aspiring to public office, he was a number of years alderman from the second ward until he moved to the third. He scarcely knew a sick day until about two years ago when malignant growth that caused his death first made its appearnce, but even to the end, and during the severest suffering he showed the courage of the true soldier that he was and bore it all with patience. Besides a wife, seven children survive him; two, Mrs. Clara SEVERANCE and Edna MAY having preceded him to the other shore, Mrs. H. KENNEDY, of Kenton, Mich, Fred SPENCER, Spokan Wash., Wm. SPENCER, Jr., Mrs. R. D. LYTLE, Tacoma, Wash., Lawrence SPENCER, St. Paul, Ralph SPENCER, St. Paul and Ruth SPENCER. "
Mrs. SPENCER and family have the sympathy of the entire community during their bereavement.
