The First Richmonds Information found on Ancestry.com message boarddated 2/28/200 by Timothy Richmond timrich1952@yahoo .com :
Richmond Castle was used throughout history by prominent people. Two Scottish Kings (another link to our Scottish heiri tage), as well as, one English King spent time within the walls of Richmond Castle. The Scottish King William the Lio n was there shortly after he was captured at Alnwickin 1174. David II was imprisoned in Richmond Castle after his defea t at Neville's Cross. David was the son of Robert the Bruce. He had married Joanna daughter of Edward II of England i n 1328 and sought to claim all of England under his flag. He was imprisoned for eleven years until a large enough ranso m could be paid to the English King. English King Charles I, was held there after his defeat by the Scots in 1647. He h ad become King in 1625 at the death of his father James I. He had attempted to force the English forms of worship upo n the Scots, he had many executed and banished their families members from Scotland and England. He also abolished th e power of Parliament and raised taxes to pay for his troops in Scotland. As a result a Civil War broke out in Englan d with Lord Oliver Cromwell leading the Parlimentarians. Charles' troops were defeated and they fled to Scotland , ther e the Scots captured him and returned him to Richmond Castle as a prisoner where he was later tried and beheaded. His r eign more than any other event started the Richmonds of both Scotland and England on their journeys to the American Col onies. John Richmond of Taunton Mass. as well as the Scottish Richmonds of Virginia and the Carolinas. A plaque close t o the southeast corner commemorates the fact that Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, was a residen t there from 1908-1910. It is said that Richmond Castle is the oldest stone-built castle in England. This may be diffic ultto prove some 900 years afterwards. It is however, the oldest Englishstone castle still surviving in our time. One b ranch of the Richmonds continued to live at the castle and others inherited nearby Yorkshiremanors. The ancestors of th e early Northern sections of the American Richmond Family are able to prove lineage from Yorkshire and Wiltshire in th e 1400's. Any connection between the Scottish Richmonds and those of Richmond Castle have as yet remained unprovable. T raditionally, though not proven, it is assumed that there are members of the family who migrated to Scotland during it s many Clan Wars with England. These started when McBeth was defeated and slain in 1056 by Malcolm III. Malcolm III tho ught he could increase his control of the British Isle and invaded the North of England. William the Conquerer invade d Scotland inretaliation in 1072, only a year after the founding of Richmond Castle byAlan Rufus de Richmond. It can b e assumed that Alan would have led at least part of the attack since he was a cousin and Warlord of the Norman Conquere r. Malcolm quickly agreed to a truce, but there was some disagreement of its terms. The Normans claimed control of al l of Scotland, while the Scots said it pertained to only twelve Manors in England proper. This led to another War in wh ich William Rufus slew theScottish King Malcolm in 1093. Then in 1189 for a sum of 10,000 marks, Richard the LionHearte d , the then English Monarchy agreed to cease all claims to former Scottish lands in order to finance his great Crusad e to free the Holy Land from the Muslim ruler Saladin. These were the days of Robin Hood of story and myth. Surely Rich monds were on this third great crusade as leaders and knights of England. The habit of awarding feudallands may have le ft some of Alan Rufus' children in control of lands inScotland at the time of its return to the Scots. William the Lio n thus became heir to the Scottish throne. His son Alexander II suceeded William, who was followed by Alexander the III . He died in 1286 leaving his main heir as Margaret, daughter of the King of Norway. She died in passage from there b y ship and a feud started between John Balliol and Robert the Bruce for the Crown of Scotland. Edward I of England inte rvened and helped Balliol gain control leading to the Wars depicted in the movie BRAVE HEART, where Sir William Wallac e of Ellerslie was cruelly drawn and quartered by the English King Edward in 1305. Robert Bruce the III continued the s truggle and rioted the English at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Bruce died in 1329 and a new war erupted in whic h the Scots at last gave up the struggle to claim their own land independent of England. During this time and for the n ext 200 years the Crown of England was share by English and Scot alike, the most famous the Stuarts. During these year s prominent English (Norman and Saxon) families controlled large estates in Scotland and thus it would only be logica l to have sent some of sons of the influential Richmond families to Scotland. During the fourth Crusade, the European K nights sacked the Christian city of Constantinople. This led to a split between the Catholic Church --Roman Catholic Gr eek Orthodox Catholics. The split started many christians to questioning which was the real Church. The debate over th e next 200 years led to the Spainish Inquisition and Protestant reform movements. By the 1600's the struggle was dramat ic as to which was the best religion. Charles I of England offended most protestants of English and Scottish parishes b y forcing them to uphold church ritual and to use a formal prayer book. In 1637 Charles tried to force the Scottish Pre sbyterians to accept a version of the Anglican Prayer Book. A Scottish Revolt erupted thus Charles sent in the Britis h Cavaliers to quail it by any method necessary including public execution. Many Presbyterians were later banished fro m Scotland and England becauseof their parts played in struggles for their religious beliefs. Some fled to Ireland an d arranged ship passage from there to the Americas and Australia. In the 1600's a John Richmond was killed and becam e a Religious Martyr there. A stone dedicated to the memory of him and others stands in a Glasgow churchyard. A list o f the banished ones of the time listed an Andrew Richmond from the nearby area of Auchinleck. Also listed were David Cu rrie and John Wylie, whose descendants married with the Richmond descendants in the Virginia and Carolina colonies. T o pay for histroops in Scotland, Charles called the Parliament into session and ordered them to appropriate taxes. Thi s led to the English Civil War which led to Charles' trial and execution. It also led to the death of Henry Richmond a t the hands of his brother John Richmond of Taunton Mass..The Scotland Richmonds who fled Europe because of religious f reedom settle in the southern states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland and Georgia. Andrew Richmon d settled in the Maryland area by 1704 and John Richmond is shown on Colonial documents as living there as early as 173 4. He or another John Richmond died in Augusta CO Virginia in 1753. All of the Richmonds of Scotland did not migrate a t that time however, for Archibald Murray Richmond was born in 1828 atAuchinleck, Scotland and came to the U.S.A. jus t prior to our own American Civil War, arriving during the 1850's. Donald C. Richmond, adescendant of Archibald's, trav eled back to Scotland and reported that many Richmond tombstones are to be found at a cemetary at Old Comnock,Ayr-shir e Scotland. One of the more ritzy spots there is still called Richmond Heights.

THE RICHMOND FAMILY, PAGE 2
He probably left England about 1635, and was one of the purchasers of Taunton in 1637. He was away from Taunton much o f his life, - through the records he is known to have been at Newport and other places, - but he returned to Taunton an d died there.
John Richmond, the immigrant, was born in 1594; He came to America from Ashton Keynes, WIltshire, England. He probabl y left England about 1635, and was one of the purchasers of Tauton in 1637. Undoubtedly he was married before he came t o this country. He married Elizabeth Nichols in England. He was away from Taughton, Massachusetts much of his life;
through the records he is known to have been at Newport R.I. and other places, but he returned to Taunton and died ther e March 20,1664 at age 70. They also used the surname of Webb for about five generations. John came to America from th e Richmond Manor House in 1635.He left a will in which he named Four children. His will in on file and a copy is give n in the Richmond Genealogy. John Richmond, the emigrant, came to America from Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire England, He pro bably left England about 1635 and came over on a trading=vessel. He owned six shares in the original purchase of Taunto n, Massachusetts in 1637. He was known to have spend some time in Newport, Rhode Island and built a mansion on Mill Bro ok.
tradition leads us to believe that he returned to England from 1643 to 1655 and engaged in the civil ward. The family w as large land-owners in the easterly part of Tauton, and gave to a village in that section the name of Richmondtown.(So urce; The Richmond family 1594-1896 and pre-American ancestors 1040-1594 by Johsua Bailey Richmond). family tradition a lways heard John Richmond referred to as Col. John, and that he was engaged in the English civil wars, In his Will is t he following bequest; I give and bequest unto my eldest son John all my writings* in my chest which is in my son-in-la w Edward Rew's house. This treasure, now lost to us would undoubtedly remove the mystery which surrounds his life and f urnish us with facts where we have only traditions. John and his sons, are known to have had excellent educations. Tha t their father signed his will by his mark was undoubtedly the result of feebleness, as he refers to his writings in th e document, which was made shortly before his death. John Richmond of Taunton was a large landholder and quite wealth y for that time. His sons were educated and refined gentlemen. John Jr. settled on the land of his father in Taunton an d was prominent in every important transaction connected with the town. Edward lived in Newport, Rhode Island. These ea rly pioneers were a hardy race. of powerful frame and large stature, They were noted for great strength, and proud of t heir skill with the axe.

RICHMOND The Richmond family had its origin in Brittany, the name being derived from the French "riche" and "monte," an d in early records it was spelled Rychmonds, Richemont and finally Richmond. The family is still to be found in Franc e and the name is common in England. The English coat-of-arms is: Argent, a cross patence fleury azure between four mul lets gules. Crest: A tilting spear argent headed or, broken in three parts, one piece erect, the other two in saltire , enfiled with a ducal coronet. Motto: "Resolve well and persevere." The progenitor of the English family came with Wil liam the Conqueror in 1066, and he was the first duke of Richmond.
(I) John Richmond, the immigrant ancestor, is said to have been born in Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire, England, where the ol d Richmond Manor House is still standing. He was baptized there in 1597. He came to America about 1636 and was one of t he purchasers of Taunton, Massachusetts, in 1637. George Richmond, possibly a cousin, was engaged in business in Saco,
Maine, in 1635, and John may have been there also, before coming to Taunton. John is mentioned in the court records, Ma rch 7, 1636, showing that at that time he was engaged in trade and it is thought that he may have returned to England . He returned to Taunton, however, and died there March 20, 1664, aged seventy years. His name is often on the court
records in 1636 and 1637. He was of Newport for a time and one of the commissioners from that town in 1656. He took th e oath of fidelity in Taunton before 1640. The part of the town where he owned land is still called Richmondtown. His w ill was dated December 14, 1663, and proved October 29, 1669. Children: John; Edward, born 1632; Sarah, 1636; Mary,
1639.

Generation 19- John Richmond of Taunton Massachusetts b. Wiltshire,England. The John mentioned here, is the same as th e one mentioned above who killed his brother Henry causing their father to lose most of his holdings. --- John was in t he shipping and trade business. He traveled regularly between the American Colonies and England and established a resid ence in Taunton Mass. in 1635. At home in England an impasse betweenthe King and Parliament led to a Civil War. The Kin g's troops against Cromwell's troops. John's brother Henry fell into the tradition of support for the King, while Joh n returned to England with the Americananti-Royalist beliefs. John had left a family in England with at least two son s and had started another in America, were he left three daughters when returning to join Cromwell. John, due to his fa mily standings was commissioned a Colonel in Cromwell's Roundheads. After the Battle of New-bury, when there was a trad itional truce to care for the injuried, Henry got word that John was nearby and entered the enemy camp on the evening o f 20 Sept. 1643 under a truce flag to speak to his brother. When Henry appeared at the tent door of a tired and sleep y John wearing a King's Royalist uniform -- John shot and killed his brother Henry before he could identify himself.. O nce the war was over the King proclaimed John's action a criminal offense under a Flag of Truce. John spent years in pr ison, while his father tried to save his life. In 1658, as part of his negotiated released, John accepted an arranged m arriage by one of his relatives in Virginia in order to return to the America Colonies and his American family. This wo uld indicate a relation -ship between the early Richmond family of the South and North in the American Colonies. Once r eleasedfrom prison, he decided to instead returned to Taunton Mass. and there lived with his daughter Sarah until his d eath in 1664 at the age of 70. Their section of Taunton is still called "Richmond Town". His male child John jr. left i n England moved to America in the 1650's and started the Northern Branch of the Richmond Family. He married twice--- th e first to Susannah Hayward of Bridgewater with whom he had four children. His second marriage was to Abigail Rogers, g randdaughter of Thomas Rogers of the Mayflower fame.
____________________________________________________________
Richmond Castle continued to decline throughout these years. Although little remains of the original sections, some mas onry dating back to thelate 1000's can be seen along the Eastern Wall, its occasional"Herringbone" courses are conspici ous. In the southeastern corner of the castle stand the Gold Hole tower and the Scolland's Hall. The latter hall receiv ed its name from Scolland, the sewer to the first Earl of Richmond, Roaldus. A sewer, in medieval times was a househol d office of rank in charge of serving the dishes at the banquet table. Scolland's Hall, what remains of it, is a good e xample of the period's architecture. Through its basement is the entrance to the Cockpit or Second Court, which is encl osed by masonry walls of the late 12th century. There is a legend that Richmond Castle and Easby Abbey are connected b y an underground passage. Many years ago when soldiers where stationed at Richmond Castlethey found the passage in th e Castle cellar. The soldiers persuadeda young drummer boy to march down the passage beating his drum. The soldiers abo ve ground could hear the beat of his drum and followed it along the river bank and through the streets of the Borough o f Richmond. The sound became faint and eventually stopped not far from Easby Abbey. The drummer boy was never seen agai n and no one knows what became of him. The people of Richmond were sadden-ed by what had happened and erected astone mo nument to his memory above the spot were his last drum beat washeard.

THE RICHMOND FAMILY, Pages 3-5
There is no specific authority for the statement that he had a wife before Abigail Rogers; but the inscription upon he r gravestone makes her age eighty-six at her death, August 1, 1727: that would fix her birth at 1741; so she would hav e been only thirteen years old when Mary was born. Dees of the land of John Rogers show that Joseph Richmond was the so n of Abigail. It is probable that John Richmond had a previous wife, who died in 1662, and that he married Abigail Roge rs early in 1663.
...
He was Constable, member of the Town Council, Commissioner and Surveyor. His residence at "Neck of Land" was about thre e-quarters of a mile from the "Green" or Center. He and his wife are buried there.
He was a distributor, in March, 1677, of L10, being Taunton's apportionment of L363.3s. "Irish Charity," sent from Dubl in, Ireland, in 1676, "to distressed sufferers" by King Philip's War, and apportioned among the people of forty-seven t owns. John Richmond was a member of every important committee in Taunton for the purchase, division and settlement of l and and other matters of public interest. He was interested in several extensive purchases of land from the Indians i n both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Concerning one purchase for the town of Taunton is the following record: "On 25t h May, 1680, Town voted to accept what the committee had done, &c., concerning settlement of our lands." John Richmon d took his share "on rights that was his father's, and on rights that was Mr. Francis Doubty's (Doughty)."

BENJAMIN SPRINGSTEED. (Springstead)
Benjamin Springsteed, of Serena Township, LaSalle County, has a wide acquaintanceship in this section of the state and is highly esteemed by everyone. He is a son of one of the sterling, rugged pioneers of this County, Hiram Springsteed.
The birth of our subject, Benjamin Springsteed, took place upon the farm which is his present (1900) place of abode, the date of the event being June 22, 1856. He received a fair district-school education, and early mastered the details of farming. Possessing the industrious spirit which animated his father, he has been justly successful, and is the owner of two hundred and twenty-seven acres of valuable, improved property. Politically he is a Democrat and takes an interest in the management of Township matters as well as in the greater state and national issues.
Joy and sorrow have come into the life of Mr. Springsteed, as to every one, and he has endeavored to act the manly, noble part, under all circumstances. The lady who is his wife, and sharer of his fortunes, is a native of New York state, and was visiting a cousin in Serena Township when she made the acquaintance of her future husband. Her maiden name was Luna B. Nichols, her father being George Nichols, of Niagara County, New York. Mr. and Mrs. Springsteed were married July 26, 1888. Their eldest child, born in 1889, and named Mabel, was killed accidentally, April 4, 1899. Two daughters and three sons remain to cheer and brighten the home. Their names are given in order of their ages: Jessie Ellen, Harry Bryan, Vera Belle, Riley G., and an unnamed baby.
Died at home of daughter Vera Belle Springstead Knight.
(Local history has it that the last name of Springstead was changed to Springsteed (by Benjamin and Maria) after Springstead family differences.)

This is just a couple of blocks away from the Cottage Street home. In the late 1960's was my last visit to the home, which was on a cobblestone street. This was just at the edge of the Genesee River. Perhaps the home was used until dark, when the former slaves could be moved to the Humphrey house and safety?
