THOMAS RICHARDSON, second son of Thomas and Mary Richardson; born in
Woburn, Oct. 4, 1645; m., first, in Cambridge, Jan. 5, 1666-70, Mary
Stimpson. There were married by the eminent Daniel Gookin, so often
mentioned in the early history of Massachusetts. In those days,
marriage, being regarded as a civil ordinance, was performed by the civil

Richardson's wife Mary Stevenson. She died June 7, 1690, the mother of
nine children. Second, in Billerica, Dec. 29, 1690, Sarah Patten, widow
of Thomas Patten, of Billerica, who died Jan. 16, 1689-90, aged about

He removed from Woburn to Billerica, previously known as Shawshin,
about the year 1667; and settled, it is believed, on a large tract of
about nine hundred acres of land, quite in the easterly part of the town,
called the Cambridge School Far, a little west of the Shawshin River, and
north of the present Boston Road. He was a soldier in the company of
Capt. Samuel Gallup in the land expedition to Canada, by way of Albany in
1690, with utterly failed. He was a deputy from Billerica to the General
Court of Massachusetts in 1703 and 1704.
Some time after, he gave to his eldest son,Thomas, a farm near the
Boston Road, now Washington Streety; to Andrew, a farm north of Thomas
and to Nathaniel, a farm north of Andrew. The deed to Andrew is dated
Oct. 14, 1705, and there is a deed to his grandson Thomas, son of Thomas,
dated Feb. 25, 1709-10.
He died in Billerica, Feb. 25, 1720, in his seventy-six year. His

General Notes: Husband - Joseph Daniel Peavey
According to "The History of Penobscot County", quote, "About 1840 a blacksmith by the name of Daniel Peavey moved into the town and occupied a little shop on the south side of the bridge. He was possessed of wonderful mechanical ability and patented many valuable inventions, among them the Peavey cant dog, now in general use all over the country, a hay press and a stump-puller that came to be commonly used. But his mechanical talent was better than his business talent, and he never gained wealth by his ingenuity. He was the father of a numerous family, among which were four pairs of twins."
This information seems to fit with Joseph except for the name Daniel. It is possible that Joseph went by the name Daniel and that his middle initial was D. instead of L. as is listed in other records. The twins have to fit with this Joseph. It is also possible that the author confused the father Joseph with his son Daniel but that does not seem likely because of the age of Daniel in 1840 and the number of years that would have passed before the son had children of his own. The 1840 Census Record for Lowell, which was a split off from Passadumkaeg has Joseph actually listed as J. Daniel and he has numerous sons which would match Joseph. There seems to be little doubt that Joseph's middle name was Daniel and he used it in many of the records. We do have a problem with the 1840 Census Record because it appears that Diane and Dianthe were listed as males instead of females. If that was an error on the part of the census taker the children would line up fairly well with the rest of our records.
Joseph was in Burlington, Penobscot County, Maine for the 1850 Census.
The following is a quotation from "The History of the Town of Burlington, Penobscot County, Maine".
"Joseph Peavey was in town by 1850 and settled on Folson Ridge in the southern part of the town. He came to Burlington from Levant (near Exeter), where he had settled in November 1829. According to the Levant records he was born in Brentwood, New Hampshire and his wife Susan was of Dracut, Massachusetts.
The Peavey's had at least 13 children. Of these, Daniel and Warren were also in town in 1850. The "History of Penobscot County" tells us that Daniel Peavey moved into Passadumkeag about 1840. He occupied a little shop at the south side of the bridge and there patented many valuable inventions, including the Peavey cantdog, hay press and stump puller. Hiram Peavey was in Passadumkeag and built a mill there is 1862. Both are sons of Jospeh of Burlington.
One of the major controversies in lumbering circles for years has been the identity of the man who invented the Peavey. Several towns up and down the Penobscot have claimed this Peavey as their own. Other than "The History of Penobscot County", quoted above, most agree that he was Joseph Peavey and that he was of Stillwater. Hatch's "Maine: A History", states that "the Peavey belongs distinctly to the Penobscot. Joseph Peavey, then of Upper Stillwater, formerly of Lincoln, in 1858, standing on the bridge watching some river-drivers at work below, with the old swing dog (swing bail) cant-dog, conceived an improvement. He was a blacksmith, and going to his shop nearby, he worked out his idea. The tool as he made it, has ever since been known as the peavey and is universally used in log driving."
The Peavey's of Burlington were all blacksmiths and it is likely that the Joseph of Lincoln was a son to Joseph of Burlington. Warren Peavey was the only member of the family in Burlington in 1860 and he remained there the rest of his life. He was well known to the people of the town as an expert in making bear traps, springs, axes, skates and hoop poles. He is buried at Folsom Ridge in an unmarked grave near Earl Harriman's place, formerly the Peavey Place." End Quote.
Putting the Census Records together with these histories and the cemetery records, most of the information can be reconciled. Joseph Daniel Peavey started in Levant in 1829 which was listed as part of Exeter in the 1830 census which is the first census that lists Joseph. He is then found in 1840 in Lowell which part of Passadumkaeg under the name of J. Daniel. This confirms the use of his middle name while he was in that area. The connection to Brentwood ties him to Samuel who was the only Peavey in the Brentwood Census before he moved to Maine. It is not clear how Joseph Daniel ended up in the Exeter area with the Tuftonborough and Farmington Peavey's but it is clear that he was there. Joseph seems to have been listed with Samuel in the 1810 & 1820 Census Records in Clinton, York County, Maine.

According to "The History of Penobscot Co.", Hiram was living inPassadumkaeg shortly after 1850 when he and several others took out acharter to navigate the Passadumkaeg River by steam. Nothing came of thischarter but "In 1862 Hiram Peavey built a mill and commenced sawinglumber. The power was steam, and had it been favorably located it wouldhave been a good investment, but it was too far from market, and thelocal business was insufficient to support it. It was shortly afterwardsburned, but Mr. Peavey was a man not easily daunted, and he at oncerebuilt it. He commenced operations again but failed to make money. Itcost too much to get lumber to Bangor. He afterwards disposed of it toWinterport parties, but it never did a paying business until the railroadreached the town."
According to the Census Records Hiram later moved to Venzia which wasdown river from Passadumkaeg and very close to Bangor. He worked as amillwright which was in line with his work at the sawmill.
Hiram's son John F. (Fred?) Peavey is buried in the same Mt. Hopecemetery plot as Joseph L. and Susan. This makes the connection prettysolid.
