see Payson City Cemetery records at http://www.payson.org/CemD.shtml (now at http://history.utah.gov/apps/burials/execute/searchburials) (Ruth Fairbanks, buried in Payson cemetery, born 2 June 1899, died 19 Aug 1900, daughter of Joseph Fairbanks). An IGI record at www.familysearch.org shows her name as Ruth Brown, daughter of Joseph Warren Fairbanks and Estelle Victoria Dixon, with a different birthdate: 27 June 1899, but same death date: 19 Aug 1900. Whoever submitted this record to the LDS apparently left off her surname (Fairbanks) from the record, so apparently Brown was her middle name.

according to the CHARLES DIXON book (1891), James Emmerson Dixon's 2nd wife was Elizabeth Ferris; however, from the 1881 census her name appears to have been Mary Chaffy. Her first name was Mary according to the 1881 census, and also living in the household was an Eliza Chaffy, age 76, who appears to be Mary's mother. Another question: why was one of James Emmerson Dixon's children named John Chaffy Dixon? (this according to the Dixon book).

TREASURES OF PIONEER HISTORY (1952), Vol. 1Early Business and Professional WomenBusiness and Professional Women of Payson, Utah County:
Lucretia Jane Rust* Wightman was born in Quincy, Ill., February 19, 1841**. She received her education at the Western Reserve Teachers Seminary. She with her family came to Utah in 1854 and moved to Payson in 1856. Mrs. Wightman carried on several lines of business. About 1870, she had a little frame store on 1st North and 1st East. Here she sold organs, pianos and sewing machines. She had two ponies and a little buggy. The buggy was just large enough to hold a sewing machine back of the seat. She took one of her children to drive the ponies, and traveled to Eureka, Nephi, and Provo, selling sewing machines. Her son, D. R. Wightman tells the following humorous narrative: "Two sewing machine agents selling the 'Wheeler and Wilson' machine, came to Payson. Mrs. Wightman, on learning they were in town, followed them around. They would leave one of their machines for the lady of the house to try out. After they left the home, she would go and leave one of her machines. Needless to say, the Wheeler and Wilson agents became very annoyed. So many people owed her for merchandise purchased, that in 1886 she decided to build a hotel and have those who owed her do the work. She built a three story building with a full dining room, kitchen, etc. They hired very good cooks, some were Negroes, some Chinese and some Americans. On the second floor were ten bed rooms and on the top were fifteen bed rooms. The top floor was never used, as business did not flourish enough. Traveling was very limited in those days, most of those staying at the hotel were traveling salesmen, or drummers. They would exhibit their wares in the banquet hall, and the merchants would call there to see them.
*her maiden name was actually Pepper. Lucretia's father, George Harrison Pepper, died in Quincy, Illinois, January 11, 1852. After coming to Utah in 1854, Lucretia's mother, Jane Dixon, remarried to William W. Rust.
**other researchers give Lucretia's birthdate as February 19, 1840 in Quincy. Not sure which year is correct, but probably 1841 because in the 1900 census, Lucretia herself said her birthdate was Feb. 1841.
=========================================
William Charles Wightman and his wife Lucretia Jane Pepper built The WIGHTMAN HOTEL (also called the Hotel Wightman, or the Hotel Payson) in Payson, Utah, in 1886, and ran it for a number of years. It was said to be the largest and finest hotel in the territory south of Salt Lake City. It was located at the southwest corner of First East and First North streets in Payson. The hotel was an impressive 3-story building of red brick. Hacks met passenger trains at both depots in town and brought them to the Wightman Hotel. Negro waiters and porters were a mark of the elegance of the place ... Mrs. Wightman was a talented actress and community leader. In 1892 she was elected president of the Woman's Suffrage Association of Payson. She also went into raising silkworms for the production of silk, as did many of the women of the territory. Mulberry trees were planted for shade, and the leaves were fed to the worms. "She had silkworms eating mulberry leaves all over the place. You could hear the crunch of leaves as they fed," recalled her granddaughter Dollie Wightman Nelson, in 1972. Dollie also said that her grandparents kept a gila monster (a poisonous lizard) in a cage. Then, too, they had a monkey that was prone to run away. Often it got into the home of Bishop John Huish, who lived nearby. His children were terrified and would hide from the monkey until Mrs. Huish sent one of her brood to ask the owners to "Come and get that darned monkey again!"
(from http://www.rootcellar.us/wightjo.htm)
ANOTHER SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF LUCRETIA JANE PEPPER WIGHTMAN (author unknown):
"Lucretia graduated from the North Western Seminary where she received a degree in music.
Lucretia opened a millenery shop in Payson, Utah, where she made and sold beautiful hats to women.
She opened a music store which developed into a prosperous business.
Lucretia planted mulberry trees and raised silk worms from which the silk was spun into threads then woven into fabric. (From the silk) she designed and made her daughter, Lucretia Anna's wedding dress and accessories. The dress is on display in the LDS Church museum at the present time.
She owned and operated a successful three-story Hotel in Payson and served as landlady.
She assisted in operating an opera house and played in many productions. She memorized many of the Shakespeare's plays and taught them to her grandchildren.
Lucretia held many Church positions in many of the Church Organizations especially the Young Women's organization. She was a wonderful role model for them. She was very ambitious for her children and family to receive a good education."

*not sure whether this was the same John Dixon. The Charles Dixon book says that he never married, but it seems a coincidence that a different John Dixon would live in the same area who was the same age and had the same birthplace as the John Dixon who lived there in 1860 and 1880.

General Notes: Wife - Martha Elizabeth Weatherbee
Name Martha comes from the 1880 census, which lists Martha E. McCORD, wife of Arthur McCORD, in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, with son J.W. DIXON, age 21 (However, I'm not sure that Martha E. McCORD age 42 in 1880 was the same person as Elizabeth DIXON age 32 in the 1870 Census, and whether J.W. DIXON age 21 in 1880 was the same person as Wesley DIXON age 12 in 1870....their ages are right but birthplaces differ.).
Her maiden name, Weatherbee, comes from the death record of her son John Walker Dixon in the California Death Index:
DIXON, John Walker; birth date: 14 June 1864 in Canada; death date: 12 Jan 1941 in Alameda County, California; mother's maiden name: Weatherbee

"Simons, Orrawell, first counselor to Bishop Fairbanks, of Payson, Utah, was born April 21, 1821, at Alexander, Grafton county, New Hampshire, the son of Aaron Simons and Abigail Buell. He joined the Church in Ohio, married Martha Dixon in 1846, at Kirtland, Ohio, and resided in the later place till April, 1854, when he and family started for Utah. After arriving in the Valley, they settled in Spanish Fork, where they spent the first winter in a fort which was built to protect the settlers against the Indians. In the spring of 1855 they settled at Payson, where they have resided ever since. In 1876 Bro. Simons attended the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia and visited relatives and friends in the East before returning home. Bro. Simons was a very active man, both ecclesiastically and otherwise. For many years he acted as a Ward teacher and took an active part in the erection of public buildings; he was also a successful fruitraiser and farmer. His fellow-citizens entrusted him with a number of local offices. Thus he served eight years as mayor of Payson. Besides Martha Dixon, he married two other wives, namely, Jane Tenny and Catherine Bawlden, by whom he became the father of twenty children. He served as first counselor to Bishop Fairbanks, of Payson, from 1862 to 1869. In the early fifties he filled a mission to the Eastern States. Bro. Simons died at Payson Oct. 13, 1900."

ANOTHER SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF MARTHA DIXON SIMONS (author unknown):
"Martha was the youngest of sixteen children.* She was born at Sackville, Westmoreland County, New Brunswick, near the Bay of Fundy, on June 27, 1825.
Her parents were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sackville and in 1837 the family moved to Kirtland, Ohio together with other Saints. Martha was baptized that same year in Kirtland along with seven other members of the family.
While at Sackville, Martha attended the district school where the three basics and history of England were the subjects pursued. As a scholastic training was not considered sufficient for her, by her practical mother, Martha also attended sewing school where her tiny fingers were taught to work out the intricate patterns of samplers.
After the family was established at Kirtland, Martha continued her schooling. She entered the academy when she had completed the work of the elementary school and at the age of eighteen became the village "school marm." In that capacity she endeared herself to her pupils because of her lovable disposition.
She quit teaching to be married to Orrawell Simons, a native of New Hampshire, on October 11, 1846. Orrawell was not a member of the Church at that time but with love and patience he was converted and baptized in 1853, while they were still in Kirtland.
In May, 1854, Martha, Orrawell, and some friends formed an independent company and left Kirtland for Utah. The company traveled without incident, Martha taking her turn at driving the team even though she was then expecting her fourth child.
They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in September, 1854. Orrawell and Martha continued from Salt Lake City to Spanish Fork where her son Edward was born. They then moved to the new settlement of Payson where they established their home.
While her husband was contributing to the growth of Payson, Martha was making their little rock house comfortable for her growing family as five additional children were born to them during the following years.
For twenty-five years, Martha was a teacher in Sunday School and for about the same length of time was the president of the Relief Society. She was also one of the prime movers in the organization of the Young People's Retrenchment Society in Payson. Only her advancing years finally compelled her to confine her public service to more quiet charity.
Martha was engaged in a millinery (hat-making) business where she was assisted by her daughter, Martha, and by Mrs. Senior, who later became sole owner. In another venture Martha helped one of her daughters with a project of raising silk-worms. That did not prove financially successful but was an activity enjoyed by many of her grandchildren during one summer.
Martha read the newspapers thoroughly and delighted to talk with people who were well informed with the world progress.
On the occasion of her ninetieth birthday, she was honored by many of her former Sunday School pupils. They gave her a flower shower in grateful appreciation of the inspiration she had given them. This courtesy was a source of joy to her throughout her remaining days.
Martha passed away on November 16, 1916, while visiting at the home of her son, Orrawell, in Salt Lake County, Utah."
*note: her father had sixteen children; five by his first wife and eleven by his second wife (Martha's mother Elizabeth Humphrey Dixon)

MARTHA, youngest daughter of Charles and Susannah Coates Dixon, married the Rev. Benjamin Wilson in 1793. Mr. Wilson was a native of Virginia, and appointed by one of the American Conferences, at the request of Bishop Black, to labor in the Provinces. He came to the Cumberland Circuit early in the year 1893 [1793]. In 1895 [1795] he was sent to St. John. He occupied several other circuits in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, remaining in the work of the ministry about ten years, when he decided to locate. His father-in-law, Mr. Dixon, supplied him with the capital to commence merchandise at Dorchester, and a short time after permitted his son William C., to enter as a partner into the business, which was conducted until about 1820 in the name of Wilson & Dixon. During the latter part of this partnership term, the firm experienced heavy losses in their lumbering operations, and through the failure, or dishonesty, of an agent in England. Mr. Wilson very soon became a prominent man in the community and in 1820 was elected one of the representatives for Westmoreland County in the Provincial Parliament. Mr. Wilson's death occurred September 20th, 1824. While in the act of crossing the Straits of Northumberland in a small schooner laden with salt, commanded by Capt. Samuel Cornwall, through the inclemency of the weather or other causes, the vessel, cargo and all on board were lost. HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, ONE OF THE EARLY ENGLISH SETTLERS OF SACKVILLE, NEW BRUNSWICK (1891), compiled by James D. Dixon, a grandson, p. 6:
"[It is regrettable that] Mr. Dixon did not leave on record some farther information respecting his parents, his brothers and sisters, and their families. He had....a sister, who was married to a Mr. Scotson, one of whose daughters married Abraham Bass, who was a tailor and draper of London, and who at Mr. Dixon's suggestion came to Sackville about the year 1810 and built a brick house on the site now occupied by the Chignecto Hall, where he kept a public house or hotel until his death."

General Notes: Husband - Charles Billings Wightman
Charles joined the LDS Church in 1834 or 1835 in Allegany County, New York. Apostles William McLellin and Lyman Johnson stayed at his home and preached the gospel when Charles B. Wightman hosted meetings in Fairview Corners, Allegany Co., New York in May and June 1835 (according to the missionaries' journals). Charles soon moved with his parents and siblings to Kirtland, Ohio, where he was ordained an elder and received an anointing in the Kirtland Temple 2 Mar 1836, served a mission later that year, and was ordained a seventy on Jan. 10, 1837. He resided in Caldwell Co, MO for a short time, in 1837. He was again a resident of Kirtland by 1843 and stayed there until 1862, when he moved to Payson, Utah. Crossed the plains with the Isaac A. Canfield Company, which left Florence, Nebraska on July 30, 1862, and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley October 16-17, 1862. (see http://www.lds.org/churchhistory/library/pioneerdetails/0,15791,4018-1-28005,00.html -- <a href="http://www.lds.org/churchhistory/library/pioneerdetails/0,15791,4018-1-28005,00.html" TARGET="_blank">click here</a>)
"In 1835, with members of his family, he joined the Mormons (Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints), fulfilling his ancestors' religious searchings for the
truth -- including Edward Wightman ("The Heretic,"), last person in England to be
burned at the stake for his religious convictions, Roger Williams (founder of
Rhode Island), and others. Charles B. Wightman was a merchant in Kirtland for
many years, but during the Civil War he heeded the call of Church leaders to
migrate to the Rocky Mountains, traveling over 2,000 miles by wagon in 1862,
to make a new home in the shadows of the ever-lasting hills. In his wagon he
brought fruit trees & bushes from Kirtland, Ohio to plant at his new home. Upon
arrival in the untamed wilderness, the family immediately located in Payson,
about 65 miles south of "Great Salt Lake City," to join with William Wightman
and other relatives who had come earlier.
Although well liked and successful, he was known as "The most dour man in
Utah County."

ANOTHER SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF MARY ANN DIXON WIGHTMAN (author unknown):
"Mary Ann was born in Canada in 1823. She married Charles Billings Wightman on November 26, 1843 in Kirtland, Lake County, Ohio. They were the parents of nine children.
Mary Ann assisted her husband, in helping build the Kirtland Temple.
They lived in a large stone house near which was a maple grove which yielded large amounts of sap for maple syrup and maple sugar.
The stone for the Kirtland Temple was taken from a quarry on this farm. They were still there during the dedication of the Kirtland Temple.
Mary Ann often told of Martin Harris being a close friend, and he visited them often.
They made their wagons and shipped them from Kirtland to the Missouri River, where they assembled them. They traveled from Ohio to Council Bluffs by rail and water. Then on to the Salt Lake Valley, in Captain Canfield's Wagon Company, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley in 1862.
She carded wool and spun yarn, knitting garments, besides caring for her home and family.
Mary Ann passed away on November 10, 1903 in Payson, Utah at the age of eighty."
IMPROVEMENT ERA, vol. 7 (1903-1904), p. 153, "Events of the Month":
"Mary Wightman, with the Saints in Kirtland in 1837, an old resident of Payson, aged eighty, died on the 10th."
DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER (newspaper), November 20, 1903:
"Mrs. Mary Ann Dixon Wightman died at Payson last week in her 80th year leaving nine children, all over 40 years old, and 100 other descendants."

General Notes: Child - Joseph Wightman
Joseph Wightman was a pioneer to Utah in 1862 in the Isaac A. Canfield Company (see http://www.lds.org/churchhistory/library/pioneerdetails/0,15791,4018-1-28007,00.html -- <a href="http://www.lds.org/churchhistory/library/pioneerdetails/0,15791,4018-1-28007,00.html" TARGET="_blank">click here</a>). Prior to that time he lived in Kirtland, Ohio.
He was a farmer, merchant, and a butcher in Payson.
"JOSEPH WIGHTMAN was born December 17, 1848 at Kirtland, Lake Co., Ohio. He was the fourth of ten children, and the oldest son of Charles Billings Wightman (b. 1815 in New York, d. 1895 in Payson, Utah) and Mary Ann Dixon (b. 1823 in Canada, d. 1903 in Payson, Utah). He was named for his grandfather, who died in Kirtland five years before Joseph was born and is buried in the cemetery adjacent to the Kirtland Temple. Joseph Wightman married Emily Johnson on 25 July 1869, in Salt Lake City, when he was 20 and she was almost 16. Emily (b. 1853 in Salt Lake City, d. 1926 in Payson) was the daughter of pioneers Philo Johnson (1814-1896) and Experience Almeda ("Speedy") Brown Ellsworth Johnson (1820-1896). Her father was one of the original 143 pioneers who came with Brigham Young in 1847. Joseph and Emily received their endowments and were sealed for time and eternity in the Endowment House in Salt Lake on October 21, 1872. In the 1870 census of Payson, Joseph "WHITEMAN", 22, was listed as a farmer. Real property was listed valued at $300 and personal property, $150. His wife Emily was 17. His older sister Mary E. Daley, her husband Matthew, and their two children were listed just before Joseph and Emily. The WM. C. "WHITEMAN" family were listed two families after, followed by his Uncle Christopher Dixon's family (indicating that they were all near neighbors).
In 1898 Joseph Wightman constructed a two-story building at 80 South Main Street in Payson, attached to a building built in 1891 by his relative, Orrawell Simons. The Wightman building was first occupied by Joseph Wightman's meat and grocery store. He had built it on the site of a small meat market he had previously owned. In 1902 he leased the business to Charles C.F. Dixon, and in 1905 sold out to his son Philo Wightman. Philo and his young family lived in the upper rooms while their home was under construction. Joseph was active in civic affairs. He was Payson city marshall in the 1887-88 term replacing Henry Fairbanks who resigned. He was also on the city council in the 1900-01 term. Joseph and Emily were also active in the Church. They sent their son Wayland on a mission from 1906 to 1908.
Emily Johnson Wightman died 18 June 1926, at age 72. Following Emily's death, Joseph remarried on 14 (or 20?) September 1927 in the Salt Lake Temple, sealed for time only, to a childless Santaquin widow, Mary Ann Simpson Stickney Boyle (1849-1934). He was 78 and she was 77. She was born in Malmo, Sweden as Maria Anna Simonsson, later anglicized. Joseph died July 22, 1930, and was buried in Payson Cemetery, next to his wife Emily, and close to his and Emily's parents and near many of their brothers and sisters. His obituary follows:
OX-TEAM PIONEER DIES AT PAYSON Payson, Utah, July 23. "Joseph Wightman, a former merchant of Payson, died at the family residence (Santaquin), Tuesday (July 22, 1930) from infirmities incident to old age (he was 81). He was born Dec. 17, 1848 at Kirtland Ohio, the son of Charles B. and Mary Dixon Wightman. He crossed the plains by ox team in 1862, locating in Payson. He served in the Black Hawk Indian war. He was in the Mercantile business for 20 years, retiring from business in 1910. He was active in civic affairs and served as city councilman and marshal. He married Miss Emily Johnson, who preceded him in death four years ago. He has lived in Santaquin since his marriage three years ago to Mrs. Mary Simmonson Wightman, who survives. Three of his ten children survive: Philo C. and Wayland Wightman, Payson, and William D. Wightman, Salt Lake; also 37 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and three sisters: Mrs. May Wellman, Salt Lake; Mrs. M.J. Morrell, Montana, and Mrs. Mary Daley, Payson. The body may be viewed Thursday at the Deseret Mortuary and Friday at the home of Wayland Wightman, previous to the funeral services, which will be held at 2 p.m. in the Second ward chapel. Bishop John F. Olson will conduct the funeral. Burial will be in Payson City Cemetery."

TREASURES OF PIONEER HISTORY (1952), Vol 1The Mormons in Oregon and MontanaMartha E. Wightman MorrillMartha E. Wightman was born in Kirtland, Ohio on the 9th day of October, 1855, the daughter of a prosperous builder of buggies and wagons, Charles Wightman. In the summer of 1862 when Martha was between the ages of six and seven years, the family who had become converts of the Latter-day Saint faith, set out on the first lap of their journey westward. From Kirtland to Cleveland, Ohio by train then by river boat to St. Joseph, Missouri and thence to Council Bluff. With two wagons and two teams of oxen the Wightman's set out in a forty-wagon train. During the months of that westward trek, Mr. Wightman acted as blacksmith and wagonsmith for the wagon train, shoeing the oxen and setting wagon wheels. He was also the dentist of the company doing a good job of pulling teeth with a set of turn keys instead of the usual forceps. When the family arrived in Utah in 1862 they found hard times in the valley. Martha's mother had two more children in Utah so there was a family of five girls and five boys for Mr. Wightman to make a home and living for out of the desert. Martha obtained her education in Salt Lake City at Brigham Young's school where the tuition had to be paid for by each pupil. While attending school she met Charles W. Morrill, a young businessman from Pioche, Nevada and they were married two days later. She returned to school and he went out to some mining interests in Colorado. When he returned some nine or ten months later he took his bride to Park City and for many months they lived in a cabin [p.320] three miles above the mine. For six months Mrs. Morrill never saw another white woman not even an Indian squaw. While living in Park City she made a trip to Payson with her husband through Provo canyon which nearly cost them their lives. A snow slide had blocked off the canyon and as they traveled over the narrow, slippery dugway above the river, it seemed the wagon must surely plunge into the river below carrying the team with it. Less than six weeks after this perilous trip Mrs. Morrill's first child was born. When the baby was six weeks old she went back to Park City with her husband over the same trail. It was sometime after this that the Morrill's moved to Half-Way House, the stage station between Park City and Salt Lake. They served meals to travelers and drivers and took care of the stage horses. But, Mr. Morrill was a true westerner, going ever westward with each advance of civilization. Soon he began freighting up into the territory of Montana, and Mrs. Morrill continued to live at Half-Way House and carried on with the stage station. As Mr. Morrill's business interests took him further into Montana, she sold Half-Way House and moved to Butte with her little family. Her new home had once been the house where the great packs of buffalo meat brought in by the hunters for the Butte miners had been stored. Hearing about the country of the Flathead in northwestern Montana, Mr. Morrill and several miners in Butte decided to come out to the valley. In 1886 he located their ranch over east of the Flathead river toward the mountains and the following year Mrs. Morrill came with the children. Before she had been in the valley long she began nursing, answering calls at all hours and in all kinds of weather. There was one midwife in the section but no doctors. More and more calls came for her and she went on horseback over the trails to care for the sick. As the calls for her services increased, she decided that if she was going to tend women in midwifery, she had to get a doctor book and study, which she did. There are many families in Flathead today who hold her in loving esteem because of the skilful service she rendered them with so generous and sympathetic ear in their time of distress. Of those first years she wrote: "During the early years it seemed the valley was held by women who were virtual widows, holding the ranches while their husbands had gone somewhere to work, to Butte or elsewhere to get money. That was the time when the Indian scares were prevalent." During one of the scares, word came to Mrs. Morrill at her ranch to pack up provisions and what valuables she could carry and take her little family to a neighboring ranch. The posse going after the renegade Indians had asked all the women to gather at one or two of the ranches for the protection. Mrs. Morrill gave several days' rations to her cow and pigs, put clean clothes and shoes on [p.321] all the children, for they would be gone several days, packed food in tubs and set out for the designated ranch. All the women could shoot and they decided to stand the Indians off as long as possible, choosing the root cellar of the ranchhouse as their most likely fortress. They expected the Indians would come before morning. Toward evening they saw a figure racing toward them on horseback with black hair flying. They thought it was an Indian, but it proved to be a woman from another ranch, where the wives and children of that section had gathered. That other gathering of courageous pioneer wives had become concerned for the safety of their sisters in danger, and this woman had ridden over to find out how they fared. One night a band of hungry Indians had a meeting near the place where the women and children were gathered. The women heard the yelling and later learned that the Indians had hung up two live dogs and cut meat from them as they danced wildly around their campfires. When the men returned they fired shots to let the women know they were coming. Mrs. Morrill thought it was the Indians and decided before she would let the Indians get her children, four girls and one boy, she would shoot them herself. She got her shot gun loaded and stood guard. Soon, however, she heard white men's voices and then the men came riding in. Mrs. Morrill is indeed a pioneer not only of Utah, but of Flathead for she not only held the ranch in her husband's absence, but she later proved up on a homestead in the Swan River district and on a preemption, in both cases facing and enduring many hardships. She also helped her sister prove up on a homestead. As every where else, the pioneers of Flathead had to make what fun they had when they could, and one of Mrs. Morrill's outstanding memories is of one such occasion which was planned for recreation and well nigh ended in tragedy. A group of ten or twelve had chartered the little steamboat owned and operated by George Wills for an excursion to Wild Horse Island. They embarked on Sunday taking provisions with them to last until Thursday. After they set out a rain and wind storm came up over Flathead lake and the party had to put into Yellow Bay on the east shore of the lake. They went ashore and were forced to camp in their tents for several days while the storm held sway over the Bay. Their tents proving inadequate they went further inland searching for better quarters and found a deserted cabin which they decided to occupy. When they built a fire in the fireplace innumerable lizzards ran out over the floor. Soon their provisions gave out. There was only one ranch on the east shore of the lake and that was far distant, so some of the boys went scouting inland. They found a ranch where a garden had been planted. The people had left but there were still a few carrots growing in the deserted garden. The boys pulled them and took them back to camp and the party lived on carrot soup for [p.322] several days. It was thin and weak since the only thing they had to flavor it with was the rind left from their provision of bacon. It was Saturday before the party could venture out on the lake and the waves were still so high that they were only able to reach the ranch farther along the shore of the lake by nightfall. There they stayed for the night and learned, for the first time, that President McKinley had been shot. When they again docked at home it was Sunday and they found a search-party had been organized to look for them. After some years of nursing without the aid and advice of medical men, Mrs. Morrill decided that she wanted to come to Demerville and nurse under the doctors there. A call came from the mountains one time, and Mrs. Morrill was sent out alone by Dr. McDonald who said: "You are the only woman I could trust to go out on a case alone without a doctor." That was high praise from an outstanding medical man. From that time on she nursed steadily until 1914. Mr. Morrill passed away in 1902. Mrs. Morrill met with a tragic accident in November, 1937, when she fell and broke her hips. For sixteen months she was forced to spend her time in bed, but now she can walk a little with the help of crutches, and she says that it was the good nursing of her daughter and the prayers of her friends that has helped her through this ordeal.

The Sketch of My Mother
written by Kathryn Isaac HuffMy mother, Ruth Dixon Isaac was born Jan. 12, 1898 at Payson Utah, Utah County, Utah State, USA.She started to school at the age of six and walked along 9 blocks every morning and home at night. She went to the Peteetneet until the sixth Grade and then went to the central to the eighth grade. Some of her playmates were Ora Packard and Deon Calvin. She played with these girls all through her school days. While at school she had Lee K Taylor, Mrs. Jacobson, Clara Moore, Mrs. Greenwood (as teachers).Mother did not participate in church activities because the meeting house was so far away. But she did go to Sunday School and to mutual nearly all the time. She tells me that no one in the family ever had to be administered to nor that she has never had any faith promoting incidents. She was married to John Thomas Isaac June 7th 1916 in the Salt Lake City Temple. For amusments in those days they attended the public and ward dances and parties. They traveled by horse and buggy in those times and so they didn’t get to go very far away from home. She has four sisters and one brother LaPreal Dixon Bills, Genaive Dixon McBride, Edda Dixon Cobb, Myrth Dixon Addington, and Gerald Dixon. After her marriage she lived at Leland Utah. In one home (the first) one son John Dixon Isaac and one daughter Kathryn Isaac were born. She moved when they were quite young into my fathers old home and there another son, Jack Blaine Isaac was born. She is the daughter of Edward Henry Dixon and Victoria Selman. Her mother was very ill the last few years of her life and finally died with smallpox. She has always enjoyed the very best of health and now lives at Leland Utah, Utah County, Utah State. She has one son on a mission in Texas, Dixon.

from HISTORY OF CHARLES DIXON, One of the Early English Settlers of Sackville, N(ew) B(runswick) (1891), Compiled by James D. Dixon -- A Grandson, p.140-141:
"RUTH DIXON, fourth daughter of Charles and Susannah Coates Dixon, married Thomas Roach in the year 1793. Mr. and Mrs. Roach settled at Fort Lawrence where Mr. Roach owned a large and valuable property. He was also engaged in Merchandise and subsequently in shipbuilding. Mr. Roach was elected to the Provincial Parliament in 1799 and occupied a set in that body until 1826, having been elected five times in succession. Mr. Roach was a Methodist Local Preacher of more than ordinary ability and a liberal supporter of Methodist and benevolent institutions. The family of Thomas and Ruth Dixon Roach consisted of the following, viz:
John - born 1794
Susannah D. - born 1795
Jean - born 1797
Charles D. - born 1800
Mary - born 1802
Thomas - born 1805
Edward - born 1807
Mrs. Roach died in March 1810, in the 38th year of her age. In a memoir of her, written by her husband, it is stated that about one week previous to her death she was taken ill and complained of a severe pain in her side, and that medical aid was not obtained for about three days. When her brother-in-law, Dr. Rufus Smith, was called, who bled her on the occasion of his first visit, which was on Sunday and again on Monday, and again on Tuesday, and that Mrs. Roach died the following Thursday. Doubtless the medical treatment she received would be very unfavorably regarded at the present day, yet there is no room to doubt that Dr. Smith did all in his power to arrest the progress of the disease and save the life of one so greatly beloved and esteemed, with whom he and his family were so nearly connected. Mr. Roach says of her that she was a devoted Christian woman and died in the faith of the Gospel.
Mr. Roach was subsequently married, first, to a widow lady, Mrs. Sarah Allan, and after her death, to a Miss Mary Dickson of Onslow, N.S., and after her decease to a Miss Charlotte Wells, who survived him several years. None of the three last wives left children. Mr. Roach died in 1833, aged 65 years."
