!About 1814 he left Saco, with his bundle under his arm, and went afoot
to Leeds. Two years later he married, and settled in Turner, on a farm, on
which he always afterward lived, and died 15 March 1872. His widow
died 2 July 1876.
!From French's History of Turner, ME to 1886; "Reuben Libby, who could

!Note: Also had 2 infants died at birth 1819/1820 in #3M.
!Stephen is listed as one of the first settlers of Porter, ME in 1782 See
the account under John Libby [820] in generation 10 of how in the spring
of 1782, Stephen, his brother Meshach and his parents made the move
from Pittsfiled, NJ to the wilderness that was to become the town of
Porter. After having built his cabin for his new home in Maine (now the
town of Porter), Stephen returned to Pittsfield, NH either in the fall of
1782 or the spring of 1783 when he soon after married first Mary
Knowles [411] in 1783. Their first child, James was born in Pittsfield
the next year. They must have returned to Porter soon after as their
second child, Daniel, was born in Porter. A list has survived showing
that Mary and her children, James, John, Mary, Jemima and Sally attended
the Baptist church, which was organized in the southern part of Porter in
1807 or 07. Mary died in October 1816 in Porter, ME.
Stephen married second, Nancy Mathews (born December 13, 1788) on
January 9, 1817. Nancy was the daughter of Francis and Lydia (Matthews)
Matthews. Nancy died January 9, 1818. On March 17, 1818, Stephen
married third her sister, Sally Mathews (bor n May 13/17, 1793). In 1804
Stephen started to build a sawmill on Fox Brook about a half a mile
above the upper Spectacle Pond completing it in 1805. For years the mill
did a thriving business. Stephen was an industrious person. He owned
large tracts of timber.
He took an active part in the construction of the Old Porter meeting
House. One contemporary, Elias Gould, remembers the many trips that he
and his father made with a yoke of oxen hauling "pumpkin" pine boards
from Stephen' Libby's sawmill to the place on John Libbys lot where the
meeting house was under construction. He related an instance that
occurred at the "raising" of the framework of the building. This
particular circumstance is of interest because of the poise and courage
required for its performance. It was an old custom for someone, who had
steady nerves, to walk the entire length of the ridgepole ("running pole"),
then back again - this was the outstanding feature of the "frame-raising
ceremony." And who, do you think, performed this feat at the meeting
house? Why, our old friend, Stephen Libby - known among the old settlers
as "Leftenant" Libby! He was 61 years of age then! (and reached the ripe
old age of ninety-two years).
Stephen died on October 25, 1855, in Porter, Oxford, ME and is buried in
the Brownfield Road Burial-Ground (his third wife Sally Mathews who
died on December 16, 1866, probably lies beneath the unmarked stone
next to Sephen's).

!Note: The 1845 date was given by Burnam in an interview for the Calgary
Herald in 1936. For various reasons, I am finding this date unlikely. He
may have fabricated his age as a youth in order to get a job delivering
mail, and never corrected this. A more likely date is 1853, based on the
age of Oscar B. Nason given in the 1860 Hennepin Co, MN census. Oscar B.
and Burnam O. appear to be the same person.

General Notes: Husband - Veranus Varanus Libby
Source: Connell O'Donovan, Santa Cruz CA From: Connell <odonovan@ucsc.edu> -
For just a few brief months, Varanus Libbe was a member of the Mormon Church in Lowell, Massachusetts, and in fact, presided over the Lowell congregation (called a Branch in Mormon parlance) as Branch President. He was baptized by one of the twelve Mormon Apostles,
Wilford Woodruff. I suspect his wife, Ann Smith, may have been a
Mormon since 1834, when other members of her family became Mormons.
Varanus joined the Mormon Church at a very crucial and divisive
moment in their history. He was baptized three months after the
murder of Joseph Smith (who founded the church) so the church was in
great upheaval over selecting the next head of the church. Several
high-ranking men were vying for the position, including Joseph's only
surviving brother, William Smith, who personally knew Varanus Libby,
because William presided over all of the Branches in New England.
William was a rather unethical person however, so he was not chosen
to preside over the Church and instead Brigham Young was chosen, as
the most senior of the Twelve Apostles. In the meantime, although
polygamy was secretly being practiced by the church, church leaders
were avidly denying it in public. William, loose cannon that he was,
very widely interpreted polygamy and was often very open about the
practice, which upset fellow church leaders. Varanus got caught up
in the controversy and just three months after becoming Lowell's
Branch President, he resigned his position, moved to Medford and
abandoned Mormonism altogether.
Varanus's father Samuel died in Bethel in 1837, when Varanus was just 16. By 1840, mother Sarah Ellenwood Libby moved her family to Portland, Cumberland, Maine, where they appear in the 1840 Census of Ward 7. About 1841, Varanus moved to Lowell to work in the cotton mill industry and there he married Ann Smith on May 22, 1842 in Lowell.
Varanus first worked as a manufacturer and "white washer" in the Lowell mills. He and his family were likely introduced to Mormonism because of his wife's oldest sister, Lydia Smith Carter, who joined the LDS Church in 1834; she and her husband, Dominicus Carter, were baptized in June 1834 by Apostle John F. Boynton, and they were also good friends of Apostle Wilford Woodruff. (Lydia Smith Carter died in Far West, Missouri - then Mormon headquarters - on October 23, 1838.) Varanus was baptized in Lowell by Wilford Woodruff on October 16, 1844 (along with Mary N. Thornton), and almost immediately was set apart as Branch President of the Lowell LDS Branch. Varanus Libbe replaced Elder Loyal C. Nichols as Branch President after his death from tuberculosis in Lowell on September 1, 1844.
By mid-December 1844, Varanus Libbe was replaced as Lowell Branch President by traveling missionary Elder Jesse W. Crosby, who was physically recuperating in Lowell that winter after enduring brutal physical persecution while proselytizing in Canada during the summer of 1844.
Varanus and his family left Lowell and moved to Medford in mid-December 1844 and left the Mormon Church about that time as well, certainly over polygamy and the spiritual wife crisis wracking the Eastern branches at the time due to William Smith's unorthodox interpretations of polygamy
!Widowed, living in Chelsea, Suffolk Co, MA in 1880 Census.
Occupation: House Carpenter
Occupation: A Shipwright. Medford lies on the Mystic River, which flows to Boston, some five miles to the south. By the 1840s there were ten yards in town, employing about 350 men in building ships for the Boston market. That constituted about a fourth of all the shipbuilders in Massachusetts. Varanus, as a shipwright/carpenter, earned two dollars a day.
Note: Varanus (not Veranus) is the correct spelling of the Latin-Arabic word meaning "monitor". (For example, the Varanids are a species of lizards which have the ability to stand on their hind legs to "monitor" their surroundings - they are thus called the Varanus Lizard or the Monitor Lizard.)

Occupation: Glass Manufacturer
! The establishment of the New England Glass Company at East
Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Deming Jarves and his associates in 1818
marked the beginning of one of the most successful American glass
manufacturers of the 19th and 20th centuries. The company-now known
as Libbey Inc.-has operated continuously for 180 years.
! The Libbey story began when William L. Libbey joined the company as
sales manager in 1870. His son Edward Drummond Libbey joined him as a
clerk in 1874, and ten years later became his father's partner. By
mid-century the firm had reached its height and was said to be the
largest glass plant in the world. In 1892 the name was changed to The
Libbey Glass Company.

!Single, Clerk in Glassware, living with parents in 1880 Census.
!The firm that would become Libbey Glass Company began life as the New
England Glass Company. They produced an array of glassware, including
mercury glass, colored art glass, pressed glass, and a variety of
pedestrian items like doorknobs and railroad lamps. Their glass was
often decorated with gilding but also with cutting and engraving as well,
a foreshadowing of what was to come.
!Although they created fine products, the company found itself in
financial difficulty and was offered for sale in 1877. It was purchased
by William L. Libbey, and thusly renamed. He died in 1883, and passed the
reins on to his son, Edward Libbey. Libbey moved production to Toledo,
Ohio in 1888, where raw materials were readily available. The sword
underneath the script part of the old signature is a nod to the renowned
steel of Toledo, Spain, from which the city in Ohio takes its name.
!Libbey hired Joseph Locke, an English designer, in 1882. While working
at Libbey he patented (among other things like Peach Blow, Maize and
Pomona) Amberina, the Victorian era glass that has distinctive amber to
red shading. Libbey produced it up to the turn of the century. It was a
difficult type of glass to make in a cost-effective manner; the red
shading came from real gold and was expensive to produce. LockeÕs glass
brought the company worldwide recognition for the first time. In the
Ô20s, Amberina was produced again in the Toledo factory, although
briefly. The Ô20s Libbey Amberina is often signed.
!Libbey was the leading producer of Brilliant Cut glass in the world
during its period (1878-1915). The glass was highly leaded- one
company was rumored to use up to 60% in the formula. The lead
facilitated cutting by softening the glass, as well as adding weight,
brilliance, and a lovely ringing sound if struck. The design was created
by a master craftsman, then cut and polished by a production line. During
the WorldÕs Columbian Exhibition in 1892 and the St. Louis WorldÕs Fair
in 1904 the company won prizes for exhibitions of their fine glass,
which the public was reminded of ad infinitum in advertisements
thereafter.
!In the Ô20s, with the wane in popularity of Brilliant Cut- and also due to
WWI shortages- Libbey turned to less labor-intensive wares. During the
Ô20s they mostly produced patented ÒSafedge GlasswareÓ, which
resisted chipping, to restaurants and hotels.
!In 1933 they began producing fabulous stemware, which today is very
collectable. The designer Douglas Nash, a former TiffanyÕs executive,
was employed to breathe life into the waning market for hand crafted
high-end stemware. Some of the Art Deco Libbey-Nash stems created
were American Prestige, Knickerbocker, Syncopation (which, with an ice
cube shaped stem, is one of the rarest today), and Embassy. Embassy was
produced with an eagle-and-star etch especially for the US Pavilion at
the Õ39 WorldÕs Fair.
!The Silhouette line c.1933 by Douglas Nash had a different animal
decorating the stem of each type of glass: the water goblets were cat
stemmed, cordials were greyhounds, kangaroos were on the wine stems,
monkeys adorned the sherries, and bears were for the clarets. The
Silhouette lineÕs figural stems came with a selection of colors: black,
opalescent, or frosted crystal. The Skyscraper stems- so called because
of the skyscraper shaped stem- come with a variety of hand done etches.
One type of NashÕs designs, the Victoria cameo etch, required 80 hours of
engraving per piece and was priced at $2500 a dozen. Obviously this type
of glassware had little market in the Depression years, and production
ceased in 1935.
!One can also find decent quality Libbey glass known as Rock Sharpe. Its
name refers to a company Libbey acquired and the line of stemware was
very popular, c40s and Ô50s. It comes in a variety of cuttings on the
blanks, and is quite reasonably priced and readily available.
!Also a number of figural stems were produced in the Ô70s; Old Crow is
perhaps the most common- featuring, of course, a stem shaped like a
crow wearing a top hat. The quality of the glass is lesser than the Art
Deco era stems, and they lack hand finishing, but the quirky aesthetic is
intact and the prices are generally right. Also made in that time period,
and of similar quality, was the Liberty pattern, which had a figural eagle
stem.
!The last completely hand made Libbey glass dates to 1940, the Modern
American line. The company, through its long tenure, did produce many
different products, after Brilliant Cut passed out of the scene c. WWI.
Libbey Glass today is synonymous with incredibly elaborate Brilliant Cut
glass, and the company is still in production today- though mostly of
restaurant ware.
