Mary Reed 19 and Charlotte Reed 22 are shown in 1850 census as in Maine, Penobscot, letter A range 6 page 2 in the same group as Amos Emerson Garmon. They are also shown again on page 3 as part of the family of Winn Read. Apparently both were working in the nearby lumber camp, probably as cooks and the census takers used different spellings. 1900 census shows married to Stark 34 years. Would middle initial stand for Howard, supposed surname of mother?

General Notes: Child - Sr (Parents Unproved) Matthew Howard Sr (Parents Unproved)
Mathew Howard received a Grant/Patent for Land in 1638 in Lower NorfolkCo., VA. In 1638 was granted 150 acres for the transport of himself, hiswife, and 2 other persons to Virginia. He received a Grant/Patent forLand on 3 Jul 1650 in Anne Arundel Co., MD. A tract of 650 acres called"Howard" was surveyed 3d July 1650 for Matthew Howard on the south sideof Severn River. In the 1707 rent rolls, the comment was made that itcould not found that this land was ever patented, but ye Survey Supposedto be altered by Howard into others. He died before 1659. Matthew Howardwas in Virginia 8 February 1637/38 when he was located in the UpperCounty of New Norfolk on the western branch of the Elizabeth River. Thisinformation comes from a land patent granted to Robert Taylor, whichdescribes the land grant boundaries as on the West Branch of theElizabeth River bounded on the west with Matthew Howard running nearlyinto the woods and Sly. It is known that Matthew and Anne had children by1640, for in the court records there is apparently a slander case whereSimon Peeter age 26 stated that Edy Hanking said that Mathew Howard'swife went walking with Wdward Lloide and left children crying and herhusband had to quit his work and quiet the children. Mathew Howard wasthe executor of the will of Richard Hall in 1648. This will left AnneHoward a cow calf and a barrow shote, Elizabeth Howard tow cows and theirincreases, to Mathew Howard the younger a sow shote, to Cornelius Howarda sow and y hat, to John Howard my wiff and new clothes, to Sauel Howard,my money and tobacco, and to old Mathew one yearling Stear calf and mybest paor of breeches. This will was proved 15 Nov 1648 by Mathew Howard. On 15 June 1649, Mathew witnessed the will of Edward Hodge of LowerNorfolf Co. There are continuing references to Mathew Howard, in LowerNorfolk Co., VA however up through 1652. It is not known if this wasMatthew the elder or his son. These references include a court order inLower Norfolk County for a 100# tob. bounty for killing a wolf and in1752 Matthew Howard is listed in the tax listings on the Western Branchof Elizabeth River and at court 21 Dec 1752 in Lower Norfolk Co., RobertWoody was ordered to pay Matthew Howard a debt of 500# tob.
Title: The Elder
From Notable Southern Families:
Settled in Va. before 1623 on the Eastbank of the Elizabeth River nearthe present Parish of Norfolk.
He had a large tract of land and several white servants. He received agrant of land in 1638 (150 acres).
He removed from Virginia to Maryland in 1649 and he and his family livedaround Annapolis..
From Maryland and Va. Colonials: Matthew returned to Va. to get thefamily and died before returning thus losing his Md. land. Matthew mayhave been the son of Sir Thomas Arundel, who was beheaded and his estatesconfiscated. He assumed his mother's name (Howard) and emigrated. OrMatthew may have been a descendant of the John Howard who came to thiscountry in 1621 and was killed by the Indians.
Whatever his lineage, Matthew and his first wife Margaret settled inVirginia before 1623 on the East bank of the Elizabeth River near thepresent Parish of Norfolk.
He had a large tract of land and several white servants.
Matthew then m. Ann Hall.
He received a grant of land in 1638, and became a large landowner.
He removed from Virginia to Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in 1649.
In 1652 Mathew Howard (could be the son) was fined 100 lb. tobacco forkilling one wolf. He and his family lived around Annapolis.

Another theory (and probably his correct lineage) on Matthew Howard born1609, ancestors is as follows:
1. Hereward, living in Norfolk between 957 and 973. His son
2. Leofric, was the father of
3. Hereward, banished by William the Conqueror. His GRANDSON
5. Hereward, m. Wilburga; their son
6. Robert (now written Howard) was the father of
7. John Howard m. Lucy Germund; their son
8. Sir Wm. Howard m. Alice Ufford and Alice Fitten. His son
9. Sir John Howard (Knight) m. Joan, of Cornwall; their son
10. Sir John Howard m. Alice, sister of Sir Robert de Boys; their son

(Jul., 1900), pp. 65-66.
(excerpted)
The origin of the Howard families of Maryland does not appear to besatisfactorily traced. It is very probable that the Maryland emigrantscame from Virginia, as individuals of that body of Puritans who settledfrom time to time in Dorchester and Ann Arundel counties. Some of thesePuritans went from Lower Norfolk county and Nansemond county. Otherswent from York county. Representatives of the Howard name apepar to haveemigrated from both sections.
In Hotten's list of emigrants a Matthew Lloyd was living at Jamestownin 1624. There is no mention in Lower Norfolk county records of MatthewLloyd, but there is of an Edward Lloyd and Cornelius Lloyd and MatthewHoward, or Hayward (the name was originally spelt Haward, Hayward orHeyward), who was close neighbor to the Lloyds, and evidently connectedwith them by marriage or blood. He appears in the first record in LowerNorfolk (1635) as party to a small law case with Evans. In 1645, RichardHall died in Lower Norfolk county, and Matthew Haward the elder was madehis executor, and Cornelius Lloyd was a witness to the will. He left hispenorial property to Ann, Elizabeth, John, Samuel, Matthew and CorneliusHoward. There is an affidavit in which some one makes a charge against aservant for slandering Ann, wife of Matthew Haward, by saying she was toointimate with Edward Lloyd. After this Matthew Howard disappears fromthe Norfolk records, and in 1661
Cornelius appears in Maryland as an ensign, and then as member of theAssembly from Ann Arundel for a number of years, 1671 to 1675. Theconnection of this Matthew with Cornelius is fixed by the will to RichardHall, and the statement of Col. John Eager Howard, that his grandfather,Joshua Howard, came to this country in 1667, at the time of Monmouth's
Rebellion, is disproved by the date of his own birth (1752), which woulddemand another generation at least. Assuming that Matthew Howard, ofNorfolk, was the father of Cornelius mentioned in the will of RichardHall, we have Matthew, of Lower Norfolk county, Va., who had Cornelius, member of the Maryland Assembly, who had Joshua, grandfather of Col. JohnEager Howard, who had Cornelius, father of same. (See Hanson's Old Kentof Maryland).
*********#1 child of 13 children.
********His son John Howard used a close approximation of the ducal Howard arms on his personal seal (extant on his will). His descendant Cornelius Howard (died 1777) also used the arms on his gravestone. The arms used were Gules, a bend between six cross-crosslets fitchee Argent, which are the ducal arms minus the Flodden augmentation. However, the connection between this family and the ducal Howards, if there was any, remains unknown. Arms were frequently usurped by families not entitled to them.
Based on these arms, and the standing of the Howards in the colony of Maryland, Matthew Howard is often said to have been of royal descent. The leading theories are:
(1) That he was a son of Sir Thomas Arundel-Howard of Wardour (born 1560), and his first wife Anne Philipson. This theory is untenable because their son Matthew Howard died in 1620.
(2) That he was a son of Thomas Howard of Brockdish. This theory is plausible, except that Thomas is said to have been an illegitimate descendant of a secret child of Lord Thomas Howard and Margaret Tudor.
(3) That he was a son of John Howard and his wife Elizabeth Lock. (This John Howard was son of Robert Howard and his wife Philippa Buxton.) Six of the eight children of John and Elizabeth (Lock) Howard are known: Robert (christened 27 November 1608), Daniel (christened 25 February 1609/10), John (christened 30 January 1611/12), Thomas (christened 4 April 1614), Grace (christened 15 April 1616), and (Mary (christened 5 March 1617/18). There are two children whose names are not known. Matthew Howard and Henry Howard of Maryland might have been those two children. However, their marriage date and the birthdates of their known children make it highly unlikely that Matthew Howard of Maryland was their son. Robert Howard, John's father, is sometimes alleged to have been a son of Thomas Howard and Margaret Douglas, but nothing supports the relationship.

Leonard Howard House - St. Charles, IL:
The residence was built in the Shaker style in 1837. Its owner, Leonard Howard, a contractor and builder, was also proprietor of the Howard House Hotel. His wife, Caroline, was a member of the spiritualist movement and believed that the spirits of the dead could send and receive messages through her and others who knew how to contact them.
It is said that Mrs. Howard played a role in the infamous Richard's Riot of 1849. Her psychic powers reportedly enabled her to reveal the location of the body of a recently deceased young bride named Mrs. Kenyon, which had been robbed by a Franklin Medical College student.
Caroline Howard and her daughters held many seances in the house, and the services that Mrs. Howard offered became quite popular with grieving wives during the Civil War. Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln, who had suffered the loss of her huband and two of her sons, came to St. Charles in 1871. It is said that she consulted with Mrs. Howard daily while she stayed at the Howard House Hotel under the alias of "Mrs. May."
After Caroline Howard died, one of her daughters continued conducting the seances in the home. Eventually she married C.L. Blanchard, who was an undertaker. For a short time, the house served as a funeral parlor. One of the downstairs rooms was used as an embalming and viewing room until Mr. Blanchard relocated the business to a building on Main Street. The front door of the house still has the name "C.L. Blanchard" etched into the glass.
The Leonard Howard House served as a residence for three generations of the Howard family. After the last of the family passed away, the home was sold and renovations began. During the renovations, several discoveries were made. Two antique parasols, one of which now resides in the St. Charles History Museum, were discovered in the house. A book dating from 1834, which had been hidden between two walls, was also found. At an estate sale held in the 1990s, a shawl belonging to Mary Todd Lincoln was auctioned, along with several other important antiques and artifacts from the house.
The house has been restored and it remains one of the most historic houses in St. Charles.
Howard House Hotel
123 S. Third Street
St. Charles, IL
One of the many hotels that existed in St. Charles from the 1830s to 1910, the Howard House Hotel is one of the few that remains relatively intact. The north section, built in the 1840s by Joel Witherell, served as the original hotel. Later, Leonard and David Howard bought the building, raising its roof and adding the south section. Although the combination Federal and Greek Revival style building had a pillared porch, this no longer exists.
During its heyday, the hotel, which was owned by Leonard Howard, played host to holiday parties and military balls. Mrs. Lincoln stayed here for a time following the assasination of her husband in April, 1865. Under the alias of "Mrs. May," she often frequented the Howard home in search of spiritual guidance from Mrs. Howard.
Although the Howard House Hotel served as a hotel for many years, it has changed ownership many times and has served several other purposes as well. At various times in its history it has been known as the Mallory House, the Atwood Inn, and the Western Hotel. Later it was used as a paint shop, an overall factory, and a beehive factory. Most recently though, the old hotel has served as an apartment house.

The Withams moved to Green Co., Wisconsin in 1856, then to Phillips Co., Kansas in 1874. They had seven children.
William James Witham was a Civil War veteran, farmer, postmaster and jeweler. He, wife Lovina and oldest son Moses moved from Franklin Co., Maine to Wisconsin in the 1850's, living there during the Civil War. But then the children numbered four, and William traveled from Wisconsin to Kansas in 1873 and homesteaded five milesbnorth of Agra. The first home was a dugout on the bank of West Cedar Creek. William returned to Monroe, Wisconsin in the spring of 1874 to move his wife and children. He and a man named Dan Beedy drove cattle and sheep 800 miles, taking most of the summer. Joe Beedy, father of John and Dan Beedy, was postmaster of the West Cedar Post Office, and when he died in 1885, William J. Witham took over the post office for two years.

Notes for Mariam "Maye" Ardell Witham:
Obituary - Mercer [Phillips County Review, Phillipsburg, Kansas, May 27, 1948]
Mariam Ardell Witham, daughter of William J. and Lovina Howard Witham, was born in Green county, Wis., on November 20, 1872, and passed away in Agra on May 3, 1948, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 13 days.
In 1874, the family came to Kansas and located in Crystal township in Phillips county, where Maye, as she has always been known, grew to womanhood. From this home she went to one of her own as the bride of Horace B. Wagoner in March 1889. To them five children were born. One daughter died in infancy.
With the exception of three years spent in Iowa they lived in this community until the husband and father passed away on September 12, 1901, and was laid to rest in the DuBois cemetery.
In August 1905, she was united in marriage to John Mercer of Agra, at Norton, Kans., and in September they established a home in Sherman county, Kansas. Three sons and one daughter were born to this union and then again, great sorrow came into her life when her husband died on her birthday, November 20, 1917. In February 1921, she came back to Agra where she kept a home as long as she was able to do so. For the past few years she has lived with her youngest daughter in Los Angeles, Calif., and with her sons in Wyoming. A few weeks ago, while at the home of her son, Charles at Blue Rapids, Kans., she became ill and because her greatest desire was to come back to Agra, her niece and nephew, Gladyce and Leo French, welcomed her and her children into their home where for the past two weeks everything possible was done for her comfort and care until the end came.
Although her life had many hardships, she found joy in the beauty of flowers and in the other beauties of nature. Especially did she love the spring time and all the little things which interested her children. Many years ago she became a member of the United Brethren church and lived a life true to her faith. Her Bible was her daily comfort and guide.
Of her own generation, she is survived by a brother, Ralph Witham of Agra, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Etta Witham of Kensington. Her parents and two brothers, Fred and Moses Witham and two infant sisters and one brother preceded her in death. Also a step-son, Fred Mercer, passed away four years ago at Portland, Ore.
Surviving her are eight children, Charles Wagoner, Blue Rapids, Kans.; Vern Wagoner, Longview, Wash.; Faye Wagoner Cooley, Manhattan, Kans.; Hazel Wagoner Peterson, Penrose, Colo.; Jay Mercer, Billings, Mont.; Ernest Mercer, Worland, Wyo.; John Mercer, Cody, Wyo.; and Esther Mercer Petty, Los Angeles, Calif.; two step-children, Elsie Mercer Jupe, Goodland, Kans., and Lloyd Mercer of Denver, Colo. Also surviving her are 29 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 5, at 2 p. m. at the Christian church in Agra with Rev. F. M. McDonald in charge. Mrs. Harold Scanlan and James Witham sang the beautiful hymns with Mrs. Howard DuBois at the piano. Pallbearers were Carl Freeland, Keith Wagoner, Warren, Osgood and Gerald Witham and Eugene French. The flowers were carried by Mrs. Floyd Beedy, Mrs. Carleton Munyon, Mrs. Millard Sims and Barbara, Mrs. Ivan DuBois, Mrs. Hazel Sargent, Mrs. Duane Dillon and Miss Bonnie Witham. Interment at West Cedar cemetery.
Card of Thanks
We wish to express our sincere appreciation and deep gratitude to all our relatives and friends for their many deeds of kindness, expressions of sympathy and beautiful floral offerings extended to us during the recent illness and passing of our dear mother and sister. Especially do we thank Mr. and Mrs. Leo French, Rev. McDonald and those who furnished the music. The children and brother of the late Mrs. Maye Mercer.
