Hugh McMenamin & Mary McGuire
by Mary McMenamin Hirsch
Hugh McMenamin born August 25, 1856, County Tyrone, Ireland married Mary McGuire. Both were from the area of Castlederg. Edenreagh, spelled Ethenree on the marriage license probably due to their brogue, was a large land holding near the townland of Castlederg. The landlord leased parcels of its acreage to many tenants. It’s present (1990's) owners now call it Correy. Hugh's 1881 emigration was sponsored by his older brother Patrick, who had emigrated some ten years earlier and was working on farms around the Albany area of New York. Hugh may have traveled with Patrick and his young family to DeKalb County Illinois as they both came the same year. What made them pick that particular area is not known. The 1880 census does list a “Rosana McManaman”, age 74,widowed, living in Sycamore. Was she the wife of some distant Tyrone Mac? (She also was on the 1870 census roll.) Regardless, a trip from Albany to DeKalb, almost 900 miles, would either have been by train or wagon. Train travel in 1880 would have been powered by a steam engine whose top speed might have been 30 miles per hour, with stops for coal, water, loading and unloading passengers and goods along the way such a trip (did they travel round-the-clock?) could have taken three days. A trip by horse and wagon covering 30 miles a day would take over four weeks. Patrick’s family of a wife and 2 very small children would have had household essentials (kitchen utensils and bedding) that could have been packed into 3 or 4 large crates or barrels.
Mary McGuire’s 1940 death notice mentions her 1881 emigration. But a faded page from an old notebook (prayer book?) had an entry “Mary McGuire... Edenreagh County Tyrone Ireland... November 24th, 1884” this may have been an earlier reference to her exact departure from the old sod. Which port she sailed from is not known but at that time a voyage from Liverpool could take 35 days to reach New York. Passengers were advised to bring a few loafs of hard baked bread and roasted or boiled fresh meat. Steerage facilities on those ships provided a sleeping berth that was basically a shelf six feet long by 18 inches wide with 22 inches between berths.
Hugh and Mary married at St Mary's in DeKalb, January 29, 1885. Their first farm, as tenants was in Cortland, called the "Bates" place. Their last farm outside of Sycamore was bought in 1902. It was a 140 acre dairy farm with some acreage cultivated for produce and cattle feed. For a time three properties were under tillage. Seven children were born, four boys, three girls. There was another child born after the first five. Hugh Jr., long thought to be number six had a doctor at his delivery so a birth record was filed. It noted that his birth was number seven for this mother. There was never any mention of this in the family Bible. Perhaps number six's birth could have benefited from a doctor's hand and that is why Hugh and Mary took on the expense for baby Hugh. None of the girls married. It was not because they were unattractive; rather mother Mary was a somewhat of a tyrant, expecting them to fulfill care taking roles.
This prescript life possibly contributed to the tragic suicide of the youngest, Kate. At the age of 25 Kate jumped from the Brush Point Bridge into the Kishwaukee River. Some speak of a quashed desire to marry, others mentioned her disappointment with being denied use of the spending money she had earned by selling eggs, that she was directed to buy long underwear instead of a frivolous desire. Newspaper accounts mention her having been depressed for some time due to a slow recovery from a bout with the influenza of 1918. Whatever it was she didn't return from milking the evening of October 31, 1919. It would take a day and a half before her body was found. There could be no doubt that she had taken her own life. Her death was never entered into the family Bible. "Drowning at own hand while insane" reads the death certificate. Most members of the immediate family would never speak of Kate again. Her photographs were destroyed too. Her sister Margaret eventually made a living as a seamtress. Ellen, a slender brunette was quite the scholar making her class salutatory and essay. She taught school till in her 30s then worked at a number of office jobs. They were referred to as "the Girls" by their Sycamore relations or “Mag-n-El”, the epithet on their common tombstone. They were known to turn down any advances by young men. Farm boys, they felt, weren't good enough for them.
World War I would provide an escape from the drudgery of farm life for son John, who in his mid-twenties enlisted in the Army. Even at that age John was being treated as a child by modern standards, being given money for occasional weekend social activities and clothing by his mother. There is a very old song from that era that has a line saying “How you gonna keep ‘em down on the farm after they’ve seen Paree” but Paris and the aspect of his own money were enticing lures for him. Surely John had some misgivings about the romance of Europe while serving with the Coast Artillery Battalion 172 Battery B in France where his unit was involved with the movement and operation of huge cannons behind the lines. He would never return to the farm. He worked in a small Joliet steel concern for a while and then for a DeKalb tire maker. He met Gladys Young, daughter of the town sheriff. Their marriage was attended only by her sister and his brother Hugh. John would be the first McMenamin to marry a non-Catholic. The absence
of both their extended families at the ceremony indicates it made a difference. Again this may be another anecdote showing the influence that the tyrant Mary McGuire held over her family. It was said that Mary often inquired as to a person’s religion before admitting them to her home. John and Gladys moved to Chicago and lived on its west side less than two miles from his bother James. Both James and John became cab drivers; driving hacks during the very exciting Chicago roaring twenties gangster period.
Second to the youngest son, Hugh, bought and worked the Sycamore farm of his father. He must have been both a hard worker and a capable businessman because he didn’t lose the property during the depression. His son, Hugh, was the first descendent of the Hugh and Mary to receive a higher education, becoming a doctor. The Sycamore farm is now totally out of McMenamin ownership; part of it is now a housing subdivision. A grammar school sits on what was the most northwest corner of the property, land donated to the local school board by Hugh, Jr.
Michael, the youngest, was perhaps the wildest. In the battle of the pool hall versus the school book, the cue stick won. That may be where his lifelong taste for gambling was born. It took many years to “settle down”. Barely in his 20s, he lived for a short time with his older brother James in Chicago. How long this young bachelor fared in the city is unknown but he did return to Sycamore. Two early pictures of Mike reveal the dapper dresser he would become; till late in life he would favor three-piece suits and hats. Mike didn’t marry until the age of 33 in 1936. He owned the White Village Restaurant for a few years but eventually became a car salesman, first Chevrolets then Pontiacs. Finally, something that made Mike stand out from his DeKalb relatives, he was a Democrat!
Hugh, Sr., could neither read nor write nor did his Irish born siblings so little if any communication went on between him and the family that stayed in Ireland and the brother who lived in New York state. It might be that an 1888 visit by a bachelor brother James to all his now American brothers before returning to Ireland was the last close contact that generation had with Ireland. A 1935 newspaper account of Mary and Hugh’s 50th wedding anniversary noted that congratulatory cards were received from relatives in Albany and Schenectady NY. So some contact was kept with the Michael branch of the family probably through the children. A contract legalizing the sale of the property from Hugh, Sr., to Hugh Jr only bore his "X" mark. The spelling of his name on the 1885 marriage license appears as McNamanan, the church has McManaman, one wonders how his offspring came to the present day spelling. It is said that Hugh, Sr., had the ability to give a piece of land's acreage and crop yield merely by looking at it. Unfortunately first hand accounts, for good or for bad, that might make Hugh an ancestor that one would tell their children about don’t exist. One wonders what he and Mary might have done for enjoyment. He seems to have landed in DeKalb County and worked for years, never traveling more than twenty miles in the span of the 55 years he lived there. At the time he started farming he would have turned the earth by using a team of horses and a plow.
One supposes when he wasn’t trailing a plow he was probably sharpening the plow blade or chopping wood for the stove or milking the cows or mending the fences or farm buildings. A farmer’s day certainly matched his wife’s in what would be a series of endless and repetitive chores. Perhaps Hugh and the family did engage in what were common recreations at the time; a summer fair that might have featured horse races, maybe a basket supper at a rural school house or an occasional livestock auction. A barn raising would be a social event. Did they shop from the early Sears and Roebuck catalog? Was that the source on the wonderful stereoscopic viewer that entertained their grandchildren and great nephews? Would Hugh ever have loafed around a general store’s pot bellied stove swapping stories of the day with other farmers or did he simply doze off in his own rocker on rainy or snowy afternoons and stay the stoic he remains to this day?
His oldest grandchild, my father, never related any stories but surely knew Hugh to some degree. As a teenager Jim spent several months in the summers of the 1920’s working on the Sycamore farm. Another grandchild, Mary McMenamin Kane, recalls him allowing her not to eat her potatoes if she didn't want to - so he was an indulgent grandpa. A swing accident that gave young Mary a very nasty rope burn put an end to the Chicago grandchildren’s Sycamore summer vacations. Hugh wore a mustache and had sandy colored hair.
Grandson Dr. Hugh remembers seeing Grandma Mary reading the local newspaper, so she acquired the skill along the way. Dr. Hugh also remembers going to their golden wedding celebration in 1935. Hugh, Sr., died the next year. Mary passed away four years later, in the early morning hours of the day her first granddaughter Mary was getting married. They are buried in Mt Carmel Cemetery along with their three daughters.
General Notes: Wife - Mary McGuire
Came fron her husband's native parish in Ireland - County Tyrone.
General Notes: Child - James Henry McMenamin
Was a taxi driver in Chicago.
James Henry McMenamin, born Dec. 14, 1885, died 1967. He was the first born of Hugh and Mary. His education was limited to a one room school house. Managing the family's financial responsibilities and working the many farms were his main chores through his early years. A small worn note book, its pages marked with pin holes and various sums, attests to his care of the mortgage and rent payments. Even in his later years he continued to "pin" receipts to his check book.
He met his wife to be (Mae) at a barn raising dance. Mae (Mary Frances) Cunningham was a city girl and had been invited to the dance through a cousin named Brock. She had deep blue eyes; early pictures testify to her beauty. Prior to marriage she worked for the telephone company, a job she would return to in later life.
James and Mae married in 1908 at Our Lady of the Angels Church. She was 17 and he 22. They moved on to Castelton, N.D., perhaps it offered cheap land from some homesteader program. Their first child was born there but their second was born 18 months later in Menagha, Minn.. In Menahga, James wheat farmed about 1500 acres. In 1920 a failed crop forced their return to Chicago.
He stayed on for a few months to make the best out of the sales of property and equipment. The bank certainly owned more of it than he did. The train trip back to Illinois was an early memory of Elsie. Since her mother was very pregnant ten year old Jim was put in charge of the little ones on that all day journey. It was exactly Nov.14, 1920 because upon arriving at their Cunningham grandparents, her mother went into labor and delivered the baby of the family, Hazel, right there at 846 Trumbell Ave. Within a short time they moved to 852 N St Louis. Just a shortcut through a neighbor's yard made a visit to Grandma and Grandpa Cunningham's house.
Being mechanically gifted, James opened a garage. A number of his customers were cab drivers who probably helped him decide to buy a Checker cab. In later years his children would come to believe that his asthma and other health problems were the likely result of exhaust pollution encountered in badly ventilated garages, both his own and Checkers.
By the early '40's, asthma forced him to retire. With their children all married, he and his wife bought a small farm in Rolla, Missouri, the northern edge of the Ozarks. It was 40 acres, mostly wooded, only an acre was cultivated. Occasionally horses were boarded or a few head of cattle were taken in for grazing. He worked for the Missouri School of Mines as an over all maintenance man. Mae returned to work for the telephone company, there was only one telephone company at that time. She died of cancer of the stomach in 1952.
James lived until 1967. They are both interred in Ozark Memorial Garden, Rolla. James was known to enjoy crossword puzzles. Both he and Mae were avid readers.

From 1919-1920, John, Sr., worked in a wire plant in Joliet, IL, owned by US Steel.
Prior to their marriage "Grandma Mac", as she was known to the grandkids, worked as a dental assistant in DeKalb. They were married on May 04, 1922 at St. Mary Parish, DeKalb , IL. John was then working in a tire plant in DeKalb. She was a Methodist, but became a devout Roman Catholic upon marriage.
In 1923, they moved to Chicago, where he drove a cab leased from an individual under the Checker Taxi Association banner. They Lived at 1823 Latrobe, then 620 N. Avers, and moved to the Laramie house in early to mid 1930's. They rented that house until 1944, then bought it for $4,500.
John died October 03, 1948, and Gladys died March 22, 1956. Both are buried in St. Joseph's cemetery, River Grove, Illinois.

The following concise account is from a revision of a sketch appearing in
"Who's Who:"
NEWELL, FREDERICK HAYNES, first director of the United States Reclamation Service (later renames the Bureau of Reclamation), engineer, civil, mining, hydraulic; born Bradford, Pennsylvania; graduate Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in mining engineering, 1885; post-graduate studies in petroleum geology; assistant in Ohio Geological Survey in oil fields; mining investigations in Pennsylvania and Virginia; assistant hydralic engineer, U. S. Geological Survey, 1888-90; hydrographer, 1890-1902; chief engineer U. S. Reclamation Service, 1902-07; first director U.S. Reclamation Service, 1907-14; then consulting engineer.
Mr. Newell graduated in 1885 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and after field experience in Colorado and other states was appointed on
October 2, 1888, as Assistant Hydraulic Engineer of the U. S. Geological
Survey, being the first aid designated under Major John Wesley Powell to
investigate the extent to which the arid regions of the United States might be
reclaimed by irrigation. He advanced steadily in the work, expanding its
scope and being successively designated as Hydrographer and as Chief of
the Hydrographic Branch. At the same time he actively assisted
Representative Francis G. Newlands (later Senator) of Nevada, George H.
Maxwell of California, President of the National Irrigation Association, and
others in the preparation and public presentation of various Congressional
bills, one of which by the personal efforts of President Theodore Roosevelt became the
Reclamation Act when signed by be the latter on June 17, I902. Immediately after that date Mr. Newell was appointed Chief Engineer under Charles D. Walcott, then Director of the U. S. Geological Survey.
During the next few years the organization of the Reclamation Service was
completed and plans outlined for extensive work in each of the western and
states. In 1907 when Mr. Walcott left the Geological Survey to become Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the Reclamation Service was organized as a separate bureau of the Department of the Interior with Mr. Newell as Director and Arthur P. Davis as
Chief Engineer. Construction was rapidly pushed until twenty-six projects,
including reservoirs, canals and related works were completed in whole or
part, notable among these the Roosevelt, Shoshone, Arrowrock, and Gunnison Tunnel. With a total investment exceeding $100,000,000, the Reclamation Service built 100 dams, of which ten form reservoirs of national importance, 25 miles of tunnels, 13,000
miles of irrigating canals and ditches with regulating works, bridges, steam
and hydro-electric generators, transmission lines, pumps and devices
connected with supplying water to 20,000 farms. Special efforts were made
to attain the highest practicable economy and efficiency in the execution of
the work and to meet the need and desires of the settlers under them.
President Theodore Roosevelt has written: "For fourteen years I have
followed at first hand the work of Mr. Frederick H. Newell. I speak from my
personal knowledge when I say that he was one of the most loyal,
disinterested and efficient public servants the United States has had
throughout that period. I first came in touch with him when I was Governor,
when I drew on him for aid and advice in formulating the proper conservation
policy for the State of New York. During the years that I was President he
was one of my righthand men. It is too often the case in the United States
that the men who are most prominent, who attract most attention, are
inefficient or even vicious public servants, whereas the men who do the best
work (I think, rather better than that done by public servants of any other
nation), pass almost unnoticed and without any adequate rewards. Mr.
Newell belongs to that small group. He is a public servant of whom it is the
bald and literal truth to say, that by his services he has made all good
American citizens his debtors."
In addition to his official duties, Mr. Newell has served as Secretary of the
National Geographic Society and also of the American Forestry Association.
He has been an active member of many scientific societies serving on
committes of the American Society of Civil Engineering, the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Washington Society of Engineers
(President in 1907), Washington Academy of Science (Vice-President in
1907), Western Society of Engineers, member of the U. S. Land
Commissions, U. S. Inland Waterways Commission, National Boards of
Fuels and Structural Materials, Illinois Society of Engineers, Engineering
Council (N. Y.), American Association of Engineers (President, 1919),
Reclamation Research Committee.
Member of Cosmos Club (Washington), and various Greek letter, altruistic,
and scientific organizations.

Artemas Newelll, known as "Squire Art", had a reputation for giving good dinners at his house in Needham, and among his guests wre Governor Banks, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, and also the then Auditor-General of the Commonwealth and others. Squire Newell had much to do with securing the first railroad facilities for East Needham. The write well remembers the Squire, who leaned heavily on a cane, and wore a rather brilliant dressing-gown. He died July 3, 1871, aged sixty-four years.

CHARLES RIVER RAILROAD
On March 6, 1851, the town resolved in favor of extending the Charles River Railroad to unite with the New York and Boston Railroad, the resolve to be sent to the General Court. By notice dated December 30, 1851, the subscriptions for the capital stock of the Charles River Railroad were called in to the amount of $25 per share, payable on or before February 2, 1852. On certain days these payments could be made at the following places: ... 3. Office of Artemas Newell, Esq., Brookline. ...
The notice of the opening of the railroad to Needham was dated May 25, 1853, and took place on June 1. A special [p. 414] train left the Boston and Worcester Railroad station at 12 M. on that day, and stopped five minutes at each way station to receive stockholders and guests. The notice states that "On the arrival of the train, a procession will be formed at the Great Plain Station, Needham, and proceed to a Grove in the vicinity of the station, where a collation will be provided. The return train will leave Needham at 5.15 P.M.

The Civil War
"Needham in the Civil War" would be an appropriate title for a volume which might contain two or three hundred pages and not exhaust the subject. The first reference to this war in the town records is the record of the meeting on April 29, 1861, Marshall Newell moderator, at which $15 were voted to each man "who shall Enlist or join a Military organization for the defence or protection of our Country". Two thousand dollars were appropriated, and Edgar K. Whitaker, Claudius B. Patten, Benjamin G. Kimball and Calvin Perry chosen a "Military Committee" to procure volunteers, provide clothing and other supplies both for the enlisted men and for their families, and to secure a suitable headquarters for the examination and drill of recruits. Artemas Newell made a fiery address, and the selectman were authorized to draw orders on a "War Appropriation" of $8000.

Among the roads straightened was that part of Nehoiden Street between the blacksmith's shop and Garden Street, which until 1855 ran by the front door of the home of Artemas Newell, Esq., who laid out and graded the new road, the town discontinuing the old one.

NEWELL COLLECTION
Mss 66 4 linear feet
The Newell Collection is primarily the work of Frederick Haynes Newell (1862-1932), of Washington, D.C. A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he worked as a Colorado gold mine operator before joining the U.S. Geological Survey. He became chief of the U.S. Reclamation Service in 1907, and his work included the construction of several major dams in the West. For further biographical detail, see Newell's notice in the Dictionary of American Biography.
Mr. Newell's genealogical interests led him to attempt a definitive work on his family. Although he appears to have worked on it from 1910 to 1931, nothing was ever published. The entire collection passed to his son John M. Newell (1904-1971), of West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Following the latter’s death, his wife, Hulda C. Newell, donated the accumulated material to the Society in 1983.
The personal manuscripts include both family and professional papers. Among these are papers of Artemas Newell (1807-1871), a lawyer in Brookline, [117] Massachusetts; Augustus W. Newell (1832-1919), a merchant and speculator in Bradford, Pennsylvania; his son, Frederick H. Newell; and Frederick’s son, John M. Newell. The collection also contains a large number of diaries, household accounts, and historical documents relating to family members, both men and women. Among the older documents is a 17th century will and estate inventory, a list of Dorchester, Massachusetts marriages in 1777, and commissions signed by Thomas Mifflin and John Hancock.
The collection is divided into five sub-groups. Subgroup I contains genealogies, autobiographies, notes, correspondence, etc., pertaining to the Newell and allied families, 1535-1975.
Sub-group II contains correspondence, diaries, legal documents, etc., of the Newell and allied families, 1694-1972.
Sub-group III contains notes, lists and correspondence concerning the existence and disposition of family books and manuscripts, 1912-1983.
Sub-group IV contains data concerning Newell properties in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C.
Sub-group V contains portraits of family members and views of places of family interest, 1881-1931.

Seventy-eight Year-old Bell is Fraught with early Bradford History
Augustus W. Newell--a pioneer with nerve enough to take over a failing railroad and to erect a school building after others were afraid to take the contract--used the bell for a year and a half on his home-made passenger engine running between Carrollton and Bradford (Pennsylvania) as early as 1856 then placed it in the belfry of the building he erected as one of Bradford's first schools.
He came here in 1852 to work for his uncle, Daniel Kingsbury, the 20 year-old Augustus Newell surveyed and plotted land for his uncle until 1856 when the newly chartered Buffalo and Bradford Railroad Company announced plans to build a line from Erie junction (now Carrollton) to the semi-bituminous coal lands of Lafayette Township, McKean County. At that time it was believed this territory was rich in coal deposits (the discovery of oil wealth came considerably later and Daniel Kingsbury himself, who owned extensive holdings in the county, was firm in his belief that coal was to be the hope for whatever prosperity this district was to enjoy. Mr. Kingsbury was president, projector and principal stockholder in the new [rail]road and his nephew a member of the engineering corps under Frank Williams, chief engineer.
The survey for the line was started in the spring of 1856 from Carrollton to Bradford. Snow in the hemlock swamps, heavy down timber and dense underbrush made the work next to impossible. The young Mr. Newell humorously stated regarding his title as assistant engineer "in other words I did the work." This "work" consisted in setting every center stake and fixing every level between Carrollton and Bradford [12 miles].
Few Settlers Then
When the survey was being made there were but very few settlers in the valley, many of whom lived in log homes. Valley roads were next to impassable and the popular method of transportation was ox-drawn sledges in summer and winter alike.
John S. King, succeeding King and Loomis, as contractor, graded the [rail]road to Bradford and seven miles up West Branch. With the rails laid the new railroad was ready for business and the "Orange" was the first locomotive to travel the new line from the rolling plains of south-western New York to the forest-covered hills of McKean County. The crew on this first train included an engineer, a fireman, one or two brakeman and several conductors.
[Rail]Road goes in "Red"
But receipts fell short of expenses and after a time the [rail]road was abandoned. It was then that the young Augustus Newell who was never paid for his work on the [rail]road purchased a handcar and attempted to "make a living" in that way. He said of this venture "that was work."
Seeing a need for power of locomotion other than that supplied by his arms and back, Mr. Newell constructed what is probably the strangest locomotive in American railroad history. Taking a set of wheels and boxes from a gravel car, Mr. Newell constructed over them a wooden covered platform. He obtained a little 5-inch single cylinder engine, formerly used in drilling oil wells and placed this on the car after much difficulty. The engine was connected by a belt to a pulley on an axle of the car. Mr. Newell remarked "to the surprise of all I made it work and made it pay."
The bell, probably more to inform the populace that the train was in the neighborhood than for safety's sake was placed on the combination locomotive and passenger car.
Start Showing Profit
Ten dollars a day "and upwards" for a year and a half placed the line on a successful basis and attracted considerable attention, especially in the face of the failure of the former and "big" company.
Mr. Newell invited the superintendent of the Erie Railroad, Charles Minot, to ride his [rail]road and Mr. Minot was so impressed with the Carrolltown-Bradford line that he organized a syndicate, making Mr. Newell a director to operate the line with the young railroader running the [rail]road on shares. This continued for a year or more, until Mr. Newell's contract expired, when a Mr. Kerr took over the line with Joe Haggerty as engineer. The line finally was absorbed by the Erie which uses the old grade.
Erects New School
Out of the railroad business, Mr. Newell a few years later was prevailed upon to erect a school building which formed a part of the later Third Ward structure. On this early building Mr. Newell placed the bell from the locomotive on this district's first successful railroad.
Augustus W. Newell, central figure in this colorful chapter of Bradford history died March 25, 1919.

Augustus William Newell
Augustus W. Newell was born at Newton, Massachusetts on October 9, 1832 and the oldest of nine children. His ancestors in this country were among the first settlers of Massachusetts coming from England in 1642 [NOTE: Actually in 1620 aboard the Mayflower]. His great grandfathers were both soldiers in the American Revolution. Mr Newell attended school at Brookline, Mass. until 13 years of age, when he began to learn civil engineering and from that time he made his own way in the world. While studying his profession he clerked for two years in the office of his father (who was a magistrate) and while there acquired a knowledge for exactness. After leaving his father's office he was employed four years as clerk for different railroad companies. His uncle, Daniel Kingsbury, had bought the property of the United States Land Company, consisting of 200,000 acres of land in McKean and adjoining counties. When Mr. Newell was 20 years old he gave the money he had saved to his uncle to invest in the land in McKean County [Pennsylvania] and two years later he took up his residence in Bradford [Pennsylvania].
He was employed by the Buffalo, Bradford and Pittsburg Railroad Company when the line was built through Bradford. Then the company went into bankruptcy and stopped running their cars; he was unable to get his pay and he conceived the idea of hiring an engine and running the train himself [NOTE: See more detailed account in previous article]. Obtaining permission, he hired a man and together they mowed the track with old-fashion scythes from Bradford to Carrolltown, a distance of 12 miles. He then hired an engine and commenced railroading. He soon made enough to pay the company's indebtedness, and here was laid the foundation of his own future. The enterprise also proved beneficial to the city. What money he had accumulated he invested in lands and thus laid the foundation for the extensive real estate business he is now doing.
As Bradford became a great oil town and railroad center, he sold his land at a large advance on the purchase price. He still owns two or three hundred town lots and a large number of dwellings in the city. Mr. Newell, although not an aspirant for political honors, has served the city in various capacities. His knowledge of civil engineering enabled him to be of valuable service in organizing a system of water works and he served as a water commissioner for eight years. He has also been a School Director, and served as Postmaster of Bradford under Lincoln's administration. He was a Commissioner from the State of Pennsylvania appointed by Governor Beaver to the International Exposition at Paris. He is a member of the American Association of Engineers and accompanied its excursion to Europe in 1889, where the party was received under the auspices of the English and French engineers. Mr. Newell has been a member and Director of the Board of Trade since its formation and has always been foremost in civic affairs.

EARLY DAYS: For the many 'Round the Square readers who have indicated their preference for stories about the early days of railroading in this area, the column--over the never several days--will summarize the early history of the Erie's Bradford branch.
The Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad Co. was organized at the Tiffit House in Buffalo on Oct. 13, 1852. The first president was Orlando Allen. Aim of the firm was to build a railroad linking Buffalo with the coal fields of Northern Pennsylvania.
Contracts were let for grading a section between Ellicottville and the Tuna Valley--a distance of 50 miles--but the project was soon abandoned. Then in March of 1856, the Buffalo and Bradford Railroad Co. was chartered by the legislature of Pennsylvania with the plan to build a line from the York State line, the valley of Tuna Creek to the coal mines in Lafayette Township, with the privilege of constructing lateral lines in McKean, Elk and Clearfield Counties and to intersect with the Sunbury and Erie Railroad and the Allegheny Valley Railroad. The line was to be begun in 10 years.
Principal stockholder and president of the new company was Daniel Kingsbury who owned large tracts of what he believed were valuable coal lands in the section then a wilderness. Chief engineer was Frank Williams. Augustus W. Newell was a member of the engineering corps of the pioneer line and some of his observations of the building of the road will appear in tomorrow's column.

RAILROAD REVIEW: Yesterday 'Round the Square began a series of short notes for area history fans about the early days of what is now the Bradford branch of the Erie.
Augustus W. Newell, a member of the engineer corps of the old Buffalo and Bradford Railroad Co., tells in his memoirs of those early days:
"We commenced the survey very early in the Spring of 1856, the snow in the hemlock swamps, the heavy down timber, and dense underbrush rendering the work almost impossible. There were very few settlers, and of very little means, living in small log houses, except in the villages. The roads up the valley were almost impassable, and a bobsled drawn by a pair of oxen was a conveyance common in Summer as well as in Winter. I was assistant engineer; or, in other words, I did the work. Every centre stake and every level was set by me from Erie Junction, now Carrollton, to Bradford. Our first contractors were King and Loomis, and afterward John S. King, who graded the road to Bradford and seven miles up the West Branch."
"We got the rails laid to Bradford. The 'Orange' was the first locomotive. We had an engineer, fireman, express car, and one or two brakemen, and I think several conductors. The receipts did not pay for services on the road (and never did)."
But rails were to be useful and successful as time went by. More of the story will appear in a subsequent column.

RAILROADING SAGA: For the benefit of rail fans in this section 'Round the Square has been detailing the story of the early days of what is now the Bradford branch of the Erie.
The other day, the column began telling Augustus W. Newell's version of the engineering and track-laying work that started in the Spring of 1856. After the rails were laid to Bradford, Mr. Newell wrote, the trains were discontinued within a few weeks since expenses were greater than receipts.
Now, on with Mr. Newell's story:
"The road (this was the Buffalo and Bradford Railroad Co.) was abandoned for a time and briers and weeds grew up the whole length of it. I bought a hand-car and tried to make a living that way, and that was work. Then I took a set of wheels and boxes from a gravel car and made a covered platform car. Upon this, after much difficulty, I placed a little five-inch single-cylinder engine, formerly used in drilling oil wells; connecting it by a belt to pull a pulley on the axle. To the surprise of all, I made it work, and I made it pay. I ran this engine about one and a half years. I was 'busted,' a bankrupt, and mighty few friends: but $10 a day and upwards that I made running my train soon brought them back and brought the road into notice."
How Mr Newell's idea brought the roat to the attention of an Erie official and how some of that line's officials purchased it will be told in a subsequent column.

PAST TO PRESENT: Recently, 'Round the Square has been detailing some of the early history of the Bradford Branch of the Erie--a story that will be continued in tomorrow's column. A great deal of the story represents the actual quoes of Augustus W. Newell who was a leading member of the engineer corps.
Now a letter has come to the column from Mrs. Virginia Newell Gray. 9 Rosedale Ave., a grand-daughter of Mr. Newell.
She writes, in part:
"Thank you for writing about my grandfather, August W. Newell. It warmed my heart and flooded my memory with many precious childhood moments and stories."
"I always associated my grandfather especially, with a sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner, ater which six little girls flat on their very full 'tummies' would slide down the front hall stairs. Then when he thought we had had enough we all sat at the foot of the stairs and listened entranced while he worked the cuckoo clock around for us."
"The cuckoo long since has ceased to work but family memories are deep in one's heart."

STORY CLOSES: Here is the final chapter about the early days of what is now the Erie branch through here. It is the sequel to the late Augustus W. Newell's account which has been appearing in 'Round the Square.
In 1859, the Buffalo and Bradford Railroad and the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad consolidated under the title of the Buffalo, Bradford and Pittsburgh Railroad Co. In 1863, the railroad then being built as far as the hamlet Littleton (now the city of Bradford), Samuel March, vicepresident of the Erie; John Arnott, Dorman B. Eaton, and others interested in the Erie management. believed there was a future in the wilderness railroad, and purchased it for a song from Daniel Kingsbury.
They extended the road to Buttsville, Pa., and leased the operating of it to Mr. Newell, the Erie furnishing the rolling stock. In 1866, the purchasers of the railroad, the expected developments in coal and mineral not having been made, and all the proprietors being directors of the Erie, disposed of the property by perpetual lease to the Erie. In 1873, the large purchase of coal lands in the region was made by the Erie, and in 1875, the Bradford region became the mecca of oil producers, and for ten years was the petroleum centre of the world.
The Bradford branch of the Erie at once became the most valuable collateral property the Erie had. Under the Jewett administration the railroad was extended to Johnsonburg; the great Kinzua Viaduct was built in 1882, and the railroad that was alone in an unbroken winderness a few years before became the main thoroughfare in a region populous and productive. It is now a division of the Erie (the Bradford Division).
