"On the morning of Sept 15th [ed: sic, note that funeral is said to occur on the 11th], 1924, Donald MacQuarrie of DeSable, Prince Edward Island, passed away from the scenes of Earth to the fullness of the heavenly joys. He was the son of the late John MacQuarrie by his first wife Mary Campbell and was born at Rice Point, P.E. Island on April 15, 1834.
He married Isabella MacPhail daughter of the late Neil MacPhail of Agryle Shore. She preceded him some years.
Two sons John of Hebron, PEI and the Rev. Neil of Florida and one daughter Mrs. Mary MacNevin of DeSable survive him also one full sister Mary Campbell of Charlottetown and two half brothers, John MacQuarrie of Attleboro, Mass. and Donald MacQuarrie of Bordon, PEI and one half sister, Mrs. Flora Cook of Dorchester, Mass.
Mr. MacQuarrie had enjoyed exceptionally good health even up to a very short time before his departure from us. He was a zealous and devout member of the Church of Scotland and held the office of elder for many years. He had always been very attentive to his Christian duties, but his activities of late years were most wonderful for one of his age. Not only was he persent at all service within his home church at DeSable, but frequently travelled from Coleman to Murray River, visiting the different sections, and doing his part, in Worship and conversation, to bear testimony to the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. We miss his service and testimony now and we feel the need of such men. We are thankful, however, that there is a heavenly reward, and that the faithful are being gathered unto the perfect and clear glory of the joys and comforts, which the Christian live are received here as an earnest of the full inheritance.
The funeral services were conducted on September 11th by Rev. Ewen MacDougall assisted by Rev. M.J. MacPherson and Mr E.C. Robertson. The remains were interred in the family plot in Argyle Shore Cemetery.

GOSEPL NAVY MINISTERED TO THE ISOLATED SETTLERS
Joe Crankshaw, "Tales of the Treasure Coast"
The bright waterways of the Treasure Coast the today provide so much pleasure for boaters and fisherman once served a much more serious purpose -- saving the souls of early settlers.
Modern-day residents may find if had to believe, but 85 years ago the Treasure Coast was so sparsely settled that the area's entire populationcould have been contained in what is today the city of Stuart.
Cities were seperated by wide stretches of dunes, woodlands and palmetto praies, with only a narrow stretch of Dixie Highway and Henry Flagler's new railway conncting them.
Isolated groups of home were sprinkled along the waterways that snaked through the wilderness that sttretched beyond the thin crust of civilization along the Indian River. Around Lake Okeechobee, fisherman and hunters lived in crude shelters, leading a roughm backwoods existence.
The abundant supply of fish and wild game provided a constant source ofphysical nourishment for these hardy settlers, but their spiritual well-being was a different matter.
Methodist circuit riders served some areas. But the watery nature of area limited such missionay work until the Rev. Dr. Neil P. McQuarrie, anoted evangelist and minister of the time, "sailed" in with a solution.
GOSPEL NAVY STARTED
On Jan. 23, 1909, in Key West, McQuarrie launched, with the blessing ofthe Congregational Board of Home Missions, the Florida Gospel Navy.
McQuarrie's "navy" is described by Alfred and Kathyrn Hanna in their book _Lake Okeechobee: Wellspring of the Everglades_:
"Its flagship -- and only ship -- was Evangel No. 1. Designed to combat the forces of evil in out-of-the-way places, this vessel was built inKey West. Thirty-two feet in length and nine in width, it contained asleeping apartment for two, a kitchen, lockers filled with hymn books, tracts and Bibles. On boards, also, was a baby organ."
The ship was powered by a 10-horsepower engine, which McQuarrie later wrote seemed day over and over: "The battle is ours, the battle is ours."
Dr. C.E. Roberts accompanied McQuarrie to provide singing and back up ministerial assistance. They were accompanied by an engineer-pilot, butsoon learned to run the ship without him.
The first voyage took the Evangel along the right of way of Flagier's Overseas Railway from Miami to Key West. The ministers preached to and converted many of the gandy dancers on the unique railway construction job.
McQuarrie, who soon earned the sobriquets of "Captain," "Commodore" andthen "Admiral," took the entire state as his mission field. He covereda circuit more than 2,000 miles in length, travelling up the east coastto the St. Johns River, down that river to Sanford, back out and downthe coast and then up the west coast.
SAILED THE LAKE
The navy entered Lake Okeechobee through the Caloosahatchee River at Fort Myers and later, through the New River Canal at Fort Lauderdale. The St, Lucie Canal would not be completed until after the Gospel Navy dropped anchor for last time after World War I.
Observed the seaborne missionary: "We find a great and needy field among the fisherman. They do not observe the Sabbath in many places, and are wicked, shiftless, aimless and profane."
The work prospered, and although the Evangel I was the only full-time boat, McQuarrie soon induced area resident to lend their boats to other missionaries.
McQuarrie also decided that Stuart would be a more centralized base forhis navy. Working with the Rev. William J. Paske of Stuart, he soon organized an annual Florida Gospel Navy Bible Conference, eight of whichwere held.
In an era when Prohibition was a ntional but not a private virtue, whenBilly Sunday and others were shining, adn when there was little commerical amusement, religious get-togethers served as both inspiration and entertainment.
The conference of 1915 and 1916 attracted wide notice, and Paske, a Stuart booster, even foresaw the day when that community would be known nation-wide as "The Bible Conference Center."
"Distinction written in capital letters has come to very many places through just institutions," wrote Paske in The Stuart Messenger.
CONFERENCE SITES
The conferences were held about a half-mile south of the old city limits near the Bessy and Frazier Creek additions. Paske and others plannedto build a hotel, tabernacle, boat docks and shelters for outdoor meetings.
Each conference latest a week. The 1915 session attracted a distinguished list of Congregational and Methodist ministers from throughout the South.
The Rev. W.H. Hopkins of Atlanta, and Dr. Frank Fox of Louisville, werethe features speakers. The Rev. Jerry Jester, a famous chalk talk andmusical evangelist, enthralled the audience of more than 600.
During the middle of the conference, people adjourned to the recently opened Lyric Theater to view Pathe Films' _The Life of Christ_. It was Stuart's first color feature and cost an extra 50 cents.
William Jennings Bryan, former secretary of state and eloquent orator, provided excitement for the 1916 conference.
Bryan was vacationing in Fort Pierce at the time, and his attendance atthe conference drew speculation that he would talk about internationaland well as spiritual events.
TALK BY BRYAN
An open-air meeting at the city band shell was arranged, but Bryan couldn't get there. Instead, he spoke in the newly dedicated Methodist Chuch.
The two-hour sermon on on [sic] the First Commandment left listeners disappointed by fascinated.
"Mr. Bryan drank no less then seven glasses of water with evident enjoyment [during his two hour sermon]," observed The Messenger.
The Home Mission Board praised the Gospel Navy's efforts. "In these days of the submarine," its report read, "It is good to think of our Gospel Navy and its Captain who is bringing peace and joy to so many hearts."
McQuarrie would eventually leave the ship to another preacher and beginmore conventional work around Lake Okeechobee, but his efforts had implanted the seeds for dozens of today's churches along the shores of Florida's many waterways

He was a member of the Pheeney Groves Post #13, American Legion, in East Millinocket, Francis Elliott Post #4154, V.F.W., in Millinocket, and was a communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church of Christ the Divine Mercy Parish in East Millinocket.

Born in Florida, possible Gainsville. Attended the University of Florida, graduating with a degree in aeronautics ~1937. He married Thelma Roberson shortly after. Arthur wanted to sign up for military service when the US entered Word War II, but his expertise in aeronautics was considered too value, and he spent most of the war time years working on military projects in the Newport News, VA area.
Arthur and Thelma divorced ~1945. Arthur took the three oldest children with him to La Jolla, CA (anothing military job, it seems) around 1945. Arhtur was hoping for a reconcilliation when Thelma drove to California ~1945. To his suprise, Thelma had a new husband (Walter Kent) in tow and took the children with her back to Ohio.
Walter eventually remarried Olna Jefferson. She had children from a previous relationship. They settled in Tennesse where he died in the fall of 1990. Olna survived him.

Mrs. Roberts Came to Stuart When Days Were Long and Quiet
By Charlie Roberts
The roots of Mattie Belle Roberts, who was buried in Stuart Monday in her 93rd year, already were deeply embedded within Stuart soil.
Like her father, the Rev. Dr. Neil Phail McQuarrie, her mother and her late husband, Dr. Charles Ernest Roberts, she was a Stuart pioneer, dating back to the era of sprawling pineapple trees.
Mrs. Roberts, born Sept. 25, 1894 [ed: actually 1884], in Haverhill, Mass., of parents with Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia backgrounds, had lived in Fargo, N.D., East St. Louis, Ill., and Key West, before arriving in Stuart in May of 1909 by boat from Key West with her preacher father, mother, 9-month-old daughter Elizabeth and sisters Edith and Vesta.
During the next decade, Mrs. Roberts became an integral part of the fledgling town???s budding community and society, teaching at the only Stuart school, serving a term as principal (1909-1910), teaching private piano lesions, serving as the first Stuart newspaper???s society editor and giving birth to a son, Charles Neil (1911) and daughter, Isabel, (1913).
Mrs. Roberts, who later along with her husband and family settled to stay the remainder of their lives in Atlanta, Ga., nonetheless kept her roots through the years in Stuart, where she has known much happiness and endured some sadness. Daughter Elizabeth died in 1912 and was buriedin Stuart in the cemetery plot which years later would cradle Dr. Roberts (1926), the Rev. Dr. McQuarrie (1938), Rebecca McQuarrie (1958) andnow Mrs. Roberts.
Several years ago, at behest of then editor Ernest Lyons of The Stuart News, Mrs. Roberts vividly described some of her early memories of her ???Stuart Years??? and how her feather founded the Gospel Navy in a story she wrote of the News??? Historical Edition.
???The Gospel Navy,??? she wrote, ???was an early-century dream of the Congregational Church???s Home Missionary Society. It supplied gospel services and established Sunday Schools and Churches of many inaccessible and remote placed on the Florida East Coast ??? especially the Keys and small settlements not adjacent to the railroad.
???To my father was entrusted the pioneer undertaking; he became Captain of a one-boat Navy, which was launched in 1907-8 with the building of???The Evangel??? in Key West and skippered via the Inland Waterways toStuart, which was to serve as its home port. (Father had been pastor ofthe Key West Congregation Church to that time.)
???After the boat was launched out entire family ??? set sail to Stuart, where my father purchased a home on the St. Lucie between the homes of Harry F. Dyer Sr. and James R. Pomeroy Sr.??? (Mrs. Roberts still owned the Stuart homesite until her death).
???The cruise to Stuart from Key West, along the Keys and Inland Waterways, was a perilous one, or so it seemed to the ???crew??? or passengers. Engine trouble out of Knight???s Key and Bahia Hundy (sic) millionsof mosquitoes at Grassy Key, where we stopped for repairs, were all perils that became great experiences viewed in retrospect.
?????? For the next eight or nine years ???The Navy??? could be seen many times docked or riding the St. Lucie waves in front of the McQuarriehome, purchased from Mrs. Hogarth, mother of A.T. Hogarth.???
In that article Mrs. Roberts recalled that among her pupils at the Stuart school were Josephine Kitching Taylor, the Krueger boys ??? Bert, George and Carl ??? and Ernestine Ricou and Florence Dyer Ricou
And she wrote, ???Dr. Roberts was the first and only dentist in Stuart for several years and, later, opened the first drugstore which he ran inconjunction with the dental office. At the start he made two trips a year to Eden and Jensen to do dental work. He would stay about a month.
???In early 1910 Dr. Roberts had to go to Fort Pierce on the morning train to get a haircut, then return on the evening train. There was a time too when ice was required for parties and other uses we had to orderit from Fort Pierce and it arrived by train. Later, as Stuart grew ???modern,??? we could get ice merely by pulling a little wagon to town over sand roads through the Bessey Addition, buying a ???cake??? at the ice house and hauling it home.
???James Pomeroy Jr., young Harry Dyer, my son Charlie and the other youngsters in Bessey Addition, of course, walked to school ??? approximately where it is now.
???It fretted my father, I remember, the Commodore Stanley Kitching contended that ???The Evangel,??? his Gospel Navy boat, wasn???t built just right. Mr. Kitching said the hull was not suitable for a yacht, but had been constructed by its Key West builders more like a fishing boat.
???My father???s decision to ???join the Navy??? recharted the course of the lives of his family and ancestors, enriched the lives of many Floridians with his religious ministrations, and made us all forever ???Stuart Natives??? with deep devotion for ???the old home town.???
???My son, a sportswriter for 30 years (eventually 42 years) with The Atlanta Constitution and Sunday Journal Constitution, met and married the lovely Louise Lowery of Stuart on one of his dozens of trips ???back home??? through the years.
???My daughter, Mrs. John B. Clark of Decatur, Ga., and I often feel the [illegible] old Stuart ties and return to [illegible] with old friends and ghosts of the past. Isabel (Mrs. Clark) took great [illegible] afew years ago in showing daughter Dorothy (10 at the time) and husband???where mommy was born.??????
Mrs. Roberts closed her story with paragraph of disbelief over Stuart???s growth and metamorphosis over the span of half a century.
???Ice in the refrigerator, paved roads to road, a concrete bridge overthe St. Lucie, go to school by automobile, no fear of the Ashley Gag robbing the back again, no 10-foot square jail, no alligator pen in town,no Bentel???s Bakery, barber shops with three chairs, water that tasteslike water, a football field, a school band, majorettes and cheerleaders in Stuart??? Ridiculous.???
Mrs. Roberts worked after her husband???s death for Western Union in Atlanta ??? before her retirement in the 1960s. And also until very shortly before her death ??? despite poor eyesight and encroaching arthritis ??? she managed to play her baby grand piano in her Decatur home. And it pleased her mightily that granddaughter Dorothy has become a talented pianist, having earned her musical degree at North Georgia College and her Master???s in music from University ??? en route to becoming a piano teacher ??? like her grandmother almost 70 years earlier in Stuart.
Another chapter of Stuart???s colorful history passes along with a gallant lady, one of her pioneers.
Charlie Roberts, Mrs. Roberts??? son, is a retired sports writer for the Atlanta Constitution. He lives in Atlanta. He was born in Stuart.

A FORMER STUART GIRL PASSES AWAY SUDDENLY IN AUGUSTA
News reached here yesterday that Mrs. Albert D. Lowes, formerly Miss Vesta Lillian McQuarrie, had passed away suddenly in Augusta, Ga., where she had been living since marriage last spring. The news comes as a saddening shock to people here who know her well and loved her.
Mrs. Lowes was taken suddenly ill Sunday night at 6 o'clock and died ina hospital at 8 o'clock Monday morning, before her mother and sisters could reach her. Her husband was with her.
Her death was caused by an abscess resulting from appendicitis, from which she suffered a year ago.
Mrs. Lowes was a daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Neil McQuarrie, who own a home in Stuart, in Bessey addition, and expect to again live here. Mr. McQuarrie was in Stuart only a few weeks ago. Mrs. Lowes is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. C.E. Roberts and Mrs. Wallace, both of Atlanta, where also lives the mother. Mr. McQuarrie is a traveling evangelist, his territory being in Tennessee and Kentucky.
The McQuarries moved to Stuart when Miss Vesta was 12 years of age. She received her later education in Georgia, graduating from Piedmont academic department when 19 years of age, and the same year entering the Piedmont sanitarium for training as nurse, graduating in due time from that institution.
The many Stuart friends of the family extend to them deepest sympathy in this time of great grief.
