General Notes: Husband - William Hillard

The family removes from Duxbury and is seen in Hingham 25 FEB 1654/5 when on that date in Hingham a William, Esther, and Mary Hilliard were baptized by Rev. Peter Hobart. I believe that it was the three children who were baptized because baptism of either or both of the parents would leave somebody out; either the child Esther or the mother Hester and it is more logical in my mind that the parents were not baptized at this time, especially since of the four other persons baptized on that day at least three and probably all four were children or youths.
These other four persons were as follows:

1. Hannah Sprague, tenth child of this family baptized by Rev. Hobart starting in the year 1638.
2. Ephraim Foulshom (Folsom), seventh child of this family bapt. by Rev. Hobart starting in year 1641.
3. Simon Burr, probably a teenager. The records show that he does not have children for ten years.
4. Hannah Burr, probably the sister of Simon.

The History of Hingham publication states that the family lived in an area called Liberty Plain., I could find nothing in the Hingham records concerning either William or Hester, not even a record of their death. The Liberty Plain cemetery has many old, unreadable tombstones. The marriages of William, Esther and Mary and the subsequent births of their children are recorded in Rev. Peter Hobart's diary.

Notes: Marriage

This Plymouth Court Record in 1640 is why historians were unable to determine the maiden name of William Hiller's wife. The record is as follows and as you can see nothing was recorded. It was like the recorder was going to enter the information at a later date and simply forgot

Georg Pidcock & Sarah Ricard marryed the xvjth May, 1640.
John Mynard & Mary Starr marryed.
William Fallowell & Martha Beels marryed.
Benjamin Noye and Katherne Tupper marryed the xixth October, 1640.
Willm Hiller and
William Nelson and Martha Forde marryed the xxixth of Octobr, 1640.

From the above record it can be seen that William married his wife in Duxbury between 19 OCT 1640 and 29 OCT 1640. No records show her surname but her Christian name is believed to be Hester, or Esther. A search of known residents of Duxbury in 1640 failed to reveal any possible 'Esther'. Since the births of their daughters, Esther and Mary, were recorded in Boston and it is known the family lived in Duxbury, possibly Esther went home to her parents to have the babies. The birth record of the son William could not be located.

General Notes: Child - William Hillard

William and Deborah resided at 'Liberty Plain' in Hingham, where William was a cooper, the industry for which Hingham was well noted. Some of their neighbors at Liberty Plain were Humphrey Johnson and son Benjamin; Robert Dunbar (a Scotchman); Capt. John Jacob; and James Whiton and son James.

I could find no record of William participating in church or town affairs, nor could I find any evidence that he was a property owner.. They must have had some relationship with the church because a sister of Deborah's married a son of Daniel Hobart, who was the twin brother of Rev. Peter Hobart, the minister of Hingham for many years.

There was some indication that they may have had a fire sometime in NOV 1683 because the cause of death of their son Isaac on 25 NOV 1683 is recorded as due to "burned in the fire".

During the King Philip's war, the home of a neighbor, James Whiton was burnt by the Indians. Also, the house of Nathaniel Chubbick, probably of nearby Accord Pond, was one of those destroyed on 20 APR 1676. No mention is made of William’s home.
The family moved to Little Compton, sometime between the birth in Hingham of Esther on 8 MAR 1684/5 and the birth in Little Compton of Mary on 3 APR 1687. The original settlement of Little Compton was about 1676 and it appears that William may have owned land shortly after that date but he was not recorded as one of the original owners.

There is a flag denoting military service honoring his grave in Little Compton. No record could be found showing service in King Philip's war, but a record exists showing that a William Hillerd from Little Compton had service in the Sir William Phips' Expedition to Canada in 1690. It shows that under Capt. Samuel Gallup, a body of about 60 men sailed from Plymouth in five Shallops. This battle was won at the expense of many lives. It is hard to believe it is William because he would have been fifty years of age, more likely his son, William.

William appeared to be more involved in the affairs of the town in Little Compton than in Hingham. At the 20 MAR 1703/4 town meeting it was voated that William Hillird is chosen "Clark of the Market" & William or Will Hillird (Hilliard, Hillard) was voated "Clark of the Market" at the town meeting every year thereafter until and including MAR 1708/9. He was voated as one of the "Surveyors of the Highways" on 18 MAR 1705/6 and 20 MAR 1707/7. On 18 MAR 1705/6 it was also voated that Will be chosen as "a monitor to see to our highways". On MAR 1708/9 he was selected for the "Jury of Tryalss". On 5 MAR 1710/11 and 10 MAR 1711/12 he was chosen as the "Tithing Man".

On 4 JUL 1691, William bought from Joseph Church, Sr., Lot 56 for 5 pounds. On 8 FEB 1692/3 he bought Lot 54 from Nathaniel Warren for 10 pounds. On 8 APR 1697 he bought from Joseph Church for eighteen shillings Lot 23, Lot 24, Lot 33, 1/2 of Lot 25 and 1/4 of Lot 18 and for 24 shillings, Lot 11. On 6 JUN 1699 he bought from John Rouse for eighteen shillings, 3/4 of Lot 14. Additional purchases were made that day from Samuel Bradford and Benjamin Church. The records indicate that a William Hillard sold land 29 APR 1714, to William Fobes. William had died three months earlier in JAN, so this sale may have been finalized after his death.

The will of William, recorded in Taunton, book 3, part 1, page 186 was made DEC 1712 and proved 1 FEB 1713.

In reference [3:109] it is given that he died 24 JAN 1731/1732. That is the death of Ambrose.

Death Notes: Husband - John Hillard

The Barbour Collection has John dying Stonington, 24 JAN 1731/2. This date was actually the date that the next son, Ambrose, died. This has been very confusing to persons doing genealogy on the descendants of John and Elizabeth (Smith) Hillard. Apparently Mr. Barbour kept his information on cards with the birth on the front and the death on the back. The above error came about when the card of John and Ambrose stuck together.

John and Elizabeth resided in New Concord Society (Preston), New London, CT. where he was baptized with his three eldest children, and with his wife owned the Church covenant, 12 SEP 1762. John, at an early date, settled in Manchester, Bennington Co., VT. About the year 1790 he came to Danby.

Captain Azariah Hillard, along with Captain's Wattles, Buddington, Reed and Cook, were the men, who during the years 1779 through 1781, successively commanded the privateer brig Cromwell against the British. Captain Azariah sailed from Norwich in AUG 1783 and a hurricane overset his vessel, and all on board perished except Joseph Pierce, the mate, who clung to the wreck and returned home in safety.

In the Revolutionary War Daniel served as a marine on board the ship "Oliver Cromwell" which captured the British ship "Admiral Cable" near Barbados. After his discharge he went to the Island of Saint Eustatius in the West Indies and enlisted JAN 1781 on the brig "General Washington." He was taken prisoner to Antigua on Saint John's Island and imprisoned nearly 11 months before being exchanged at Philadelphia. He also served from Vermont for which a pension was awarded.

They resided in Manchester, VT, where all their children were born. At some time after 1807, they removed to Plattsburg, NY, where they both died. The census of 1850, show Rebecca living with her son Marimus in Plattsburg, NY.

General Notes: Child - Miner Hilliard

He first settled on the farm now (1869) owned by Titus Lyon. He afterwards lived near where the woolen factory stood, which has since been known as the "Hilliard place." He was a soldier of the Revolution, having served quite young, and drew a pension. He was a patriotic man, and always celebrated the Fourth of July with much enthusiasm, and scarcely ever failed to fire off his gun at sunrise on that day. He was a great ball player, a game to which he was greatly attached. He gained his military title by having been a captain in the militia. As a citizen he was trusty, worthy, and honest; and took an active part in the religious interests of the town. He loved peace, and would make almost any sacrifice to maintain it. Although not rich in this world's goods, he was rich in the regard and esteem tendered by his neighbors. He was a Grand Juror three years between the years 1801 and 1816.

He applied for a pension, 1832, from Rutland Co., VT, for services as private, 1779, in Captain Lay's company, Col. William Worthington's regiment of coast guards.

Birth Notes: Child - John Hillard

In reference [3:109] it is given that he died 24 JAN 1731/1732. That is the death of Ambrose.

Death Notes: Child - John Hillard

The Barbour Collection has John dying Stonington, 24 JAN 1731/2. This date was actually the date that the next son, Ambrose, died. This has been very confusing to persons doing genealogy on the descendants of John and Elizabeth (Smith) Hillard. Apparently Mr. Barbour kept his information on cards with the birth on the front and the death on the back. The above error came about when the card of John and Ambrose stuck together.

John's parents died when he was fourteen years of age. It appears that John went to Norwich to live with his cousin Joseph but possibly Joseph was not well enough (he died soon after) and recommended Ephraim Kingsbury to be his guardian. Following document is on record:

John and Elizabeth resided in New Concord Society (Preston), New London, CT. where he was baptized with his three eldest children, and with his wife owned the Church covenant, 12 SEP 1762. John, at an early date, settled in Manchester, Bennington Co., VT. About the year 1790 he came to Danby.

Boston records for the period 1644 and 1646 included earlier births from other towns claiming them to be Boston Records. I believe that Mary could have been born in Boston as the records indicate. Maybe her mother's parents lived in Boston and she went back home to have someone care for her two children, William and Esther.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Hillard

John and Frances (____) Farrow came from Hingham, England with daughter Mary in 1635. John Sr. had a grant of five acres of land in our Hingham on Town (South) St., near the spot where Dr. H. E. Spaulding later resided. At the time the new meeting-house was erected he and his two sons were located on East St., below Cushings Bridge. Frances outlived her husband dying 28 JAN 1688/9; John Sr. died 7 JUL 1687, leaving a will dated 28 MAR 1687 and proved 17 AUG 1687. John Sr. and Frances had the following children: Mary, John, Remember, Hannah and Nathan.
John Jr. was a carpenter. Constable in 1672. He resided in the second precinct. In his will of 10 FEB 1708/9, proved 9 APR 1716, mentions wife Frances and seven children; two, namely Hannah and William, having died before him.

General Notes: Husband - William Hillard

David and Johanna moved from Little Compton to Stonington after the birth of their second child in OCT 1702 and before the birth of their third child in OCT 1703. They were active in the First Congretational Church (Road Church) of Stonington. Their children were all christened there. David was elected Selectman in 1714 and 1715. He was also active in the Town Militia, as the ammunition and weapons were stored in his household.

After the death of Johanna, David returned with his family to Little Compton, where he married Susannah Luther. In little Compton, David obtained the military rank of Captain in the Indian wars. His occupation appeared to be that of a carpenter because he is mentioned many times for receiving payment for constructing wooden items such as caskets, collection plates and ammunition storage chests, etc.

General Notes: Husband - Zimri Scates Wallingford

Father: Samuel Wallingford b: BET 1790 AND 1791 in Rochester, NH
Mother: Sally Worster b: 22 JUL 1793 in Berwick , York County, ME

Note:
Zimri got his unusual name due to the death of a cousin. His mother's sister Mary, who married Deacon John Scates, had a son Zimri Scates who died in Milton on 26 February 1816 at the age of 16, only a little more than seven months before Zimri Scates Wallingford was born.

At age twelve Zimri began learning blacksmithing, and two years later began working in the machine shops of the Great Falls Manufacturing Company in Somersworth, N.H. He filled an apprenticeship in machine building there, as well as in Maryland, Virginia and Philadelphia. In 1844 he began working for the Cocheco Manufacturing Company in Dover, N.H. and worked as a master machine builder. In 1849 he became Superintendant of the mills, and in 1860 was promoted to Agent, a job he held until his death. He was a strong anti-slavery advocate before and during the Civil War, and an active supporter of the Republican Party from its formation. He was a member of the N.H. Constitutional Convention in 1876 and also a Presidential Elector that same year. He served for years as president of the Savings Bank for the County of Strafford, a director of tbe Strafford National Bank, president of the Dover Library Association, and a director of the Dover and Winnipesaukee Railroad. His religion was Unitarian.(2303)

Zimri was actively engaged in pushing the interests of Dover's Cocheco River and was a member of the Dover Navigation Company. The company built schooners, and their fifth such ship, built by the Goss and Sawyer shipyard and launched from Bath, Maine in July 1882, was the Schooner Zimri S. Wallingford. The schooner was one of the Company's biggest financial successes. Besides delivering many cargoes of coal to Dover, it also carried lumber, stone, ice, phosphorus and produce up and down the East Coast. The ship was totally destroyed in an accidental fire on 17 March 1895 at Montompkins Inlet, Virginia. Over her lifetime the Wallingfordhad earned $23,577 for her owners, a profit of 124%, and was insured for another $12,000.(2304)

A lengthy biography of Zimri, as well as portraits, are available in Hurd's History of Rockingham and Strafford Counties(2305) and Sketches of Successful New Hampshire Men (1882).(2306) The biography is the same in both.

In the 1850 census of Dover, Zimri and Alta are living with their children John O. and Mary C., as well as Ellen O'Brien, 32, born Ireland (presumably a servant), Joseph Hilliard, 19, a machinist born in N.Y., and William H. Hilliard, 16, a manufacturer born in N.Y. The latter two are probably relations of Alta. Ten years later they are still living in Dover. This time Zimri has gone from being described as a manufacturer to a "Supt. Cotton Mills". With Zimri and Alta are four children John, a 19-year old machinist, Mary, Julia and Ira, as well as Kate Winn, 21, born Ireland, who is probably another servant. The child Ira is very likely the son of Zimri's brother Ira and his wife Delania, as both his parents were dead by the time of the 1860 census.

General Notes: Child - John O. Wallingford

Note: John served in the military. He was still a resident of Dover, N.H. when he enlisted in the 15th Regiment N.H. Volunteers on 15 October 1862, mustered in as a Sergeant Major. On the following January 18th he was appointed as Lieutenant. He mustered out in August but joined back up in the 18th N.H. in September 1864 as a Captain. He remained thus until the Civil War was over. He was severely wounded in an assault on Port Hudson, Louisiana on 14 June 1863.The siege of Port Hudson took place between 21 May and 9 July. In cooperation with Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's offensive against Vicksburg, Union Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Bank's army moved against the Confederate stronghold at Port Hudson on the Mississippi River. On May 27, after their frontal assaults were repulsed, the Federals settled into a siege which lasted for 48 days. Banks renewed his assaults on June 14 but the defenders successfully repelled them. On July 9, 1863, after hearing of the fall of Vicksburg, the Confederate garrison surrendered, opening the Mississippi River to Union navigation from its source to New Orleans. Total estimated casualties were 5,000 Union and 7,208 Confederate. He died of disease contracted during his war service and was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover, N.H.

He died of stomach cancer. (20 SEP 1871)

General Notes: Child - Capt. Lonson Hilliard

Captain Hilliard attended the academy of his native town, after which he began the study of medicine. This he continued for about three years, under his brother-in-law, Dr. Patchin. Disliking the practice of surgery, however he gave up the profession, and went to Canada, where he took command of one of the barges on the St. Lawrence River, plying between Prescott, Grenville County, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. In this latter step he was influenced, in a great measure, by an account of the early life of his father.

He afterwards bought a farm and settled at Prescott; but, becoming restless in so quiet a life at the age of twenty-one, he purchased a barge, which he ran successfully for about two years and a half. He then engaged as purser and clerk on the steamboat "Great Britain", and held the position for about three years. In 1828 he became Captain of the steamboat "Brookville".

In 1829 he took charge of "William the Fourth", then the largest boat on Lake Ontario. Captain Hilliard continued to be interested in steamboats until 1852. During this time he was instrumental in opening the St. Lawrence River to navigation. He performed what had been considered an impossible feat, - that of taking a steamboat over the rapids of the St. Lawrence River. For this he was presented with a valuable gold watch, bearing the following inscription:
"Presented to Captain L. Hilliard, by John Hamilton, to commemorate the safe arrival of the steamboat 'Ontario' at Montreal, from Prescott, United States; having made the first descent by steam over the rapids of the St. Lawrence, 19 AUG 1840".

For a number of years, Captain Hilliard was engaged in a forwarding business, having in charge a large number of vessels, and living in Montreal and Toronto. In 1854 he removed with his family to Michigan. He made a short stay in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., MI, engaging in the flour business in a limited way. He then went to Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., MI; and in company with others, engaged in the lumber business at Dorr, Allegan Co.; but in the financial crash of 1857, he lost nearly all he had. In FEB 1861, he purchased a small piece of land and a saw-mill in the town of Hopkins, Allegan Co., and worked earnestly to retrieve his fortune. He made a second purchase of land, - about nine hundred acres - upon which he realized a net profit of thirty thousand dollars. He still continued to manufacture lumber, and to deal in real estate, until the time of his death in 1871. He left an unencumbered estate of about one hundred thousand dollars.

He was a member of the Congregational Church for the last thirty-seven years of his life; he was a faithful attendant and a liberal contributor. He was a Whig, and became a Republican upon the organization of that party, in 1854. Four of his children served in the Civil War.
Captain Hilliard was strong in his personal friendships, and genial to all.

Death Notes: Husband - Capt. Lonson Hilliard

He died of stomach cancer. (20 SEP 1871)

General Notes: Husband - Capt.

Birth Notes: Husband - Miner Hilliard

The Barbour Manuscript does not give the place or date. Just that he was 83 when he died in 1847.

General Notes: Husband - Miner Hilliard

This record of birth and death is from the family Bible, last known to
be in the possession of Jacob Bemiss, LaGrange, ME. It is a matter of
record that Tristram Hillman was drowned.

In another Bible, once in the possession of Mrs. Emma Debora Benson,
Minneapolis, Minn; this date of death was placed on July 15th instead
of June 15th.

The record of Moses Hillman says his brother settled in New Brunswick.

Another story says Tristram left in 1770 and went to England. He
served as a seaman and became a captain in the British Navy. (There
is a Captain Tristram Hillman in British Naval Records.) Captain
Hillman married Ann Lindopp at St. Botolph without Aldgate, London,
England, November 19, 1777.

The marriage certificate of Ann Lindopp and Tristram Hillman & the
birth certificates of the children do exist, copies of which are
located in Orem, Utah.

For services rendered during the War of Independence, Captain Tristram
Hillman was granted several lots of land along the St. John River in
NB, Canada. He settled on Sullivan Creek and built a large home in
1785. He drowned three years later.
>>>According to Ralph Childers

He was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
>>>According to Barbara Houtenbrink

In 1785 arrived in Shobomoc from St. Andrews.
