HISTORY:
James and his first wife , was born in New York state. At the time of the 1860 census,[Switzerland Co, Cotton Twp, IN, family and dwelling #940] James was listedas being 25 years old. When he enrolled in the Indiana Volunteers, Union Army, 4 Oct. 1861, his age was 27 years. James died of typhoid fever, contracted in military service.
James enrolled 4 Oct. 1861 at Enterprise, Switzerland co, IN., for 3 years as a private in Company E, 50 Infantry Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He was promoted to corporal 1 Jan 1862. The circumstances of his illness was described by Capt. Percy ROUSE of James' company: "..said Sage was takensick at Camp Glenbrook in the State of Kentucky the latter part of February 1862, with Typhoid Fever. That on or about the list of March 1862 while the Reg.was enrout to Bowling Green, Ky, the said Sage was left behind by order of theRegt. Surgeon at Woodsonville, KY., for medical treatment, and that the post Surgeon at Woodsonville gave Private ThomasF. Adams of Comt. "E" a pass through the lines, with orders for said James A. Sage to be taken to his home in Indiana, as soon as possible and that he was so taken by said private Adams..." [Switzerland Co, IN, Circuit Court, adfidavid of Percy ROUSE 28 Apr 1868].
Dr. Philander S. Sage (James' father), attending physician, certified James' death in two affidavits. (see page 153, SEBREE Studies).
James Sage's death left four minor children who became wards of Samuel PAVY who in 1864 was 72 years old. Horace, the next oldest child was later guardian of some of them, since he was mentioned in that capacity in an 1890 application for a window's pension by Lovina VANNATTER 20 Feb 1890. Additional data from James' pension and military files are in the appendix [A30. A-31, Sebree Studies].

ROMANCE WAS REALITY
Frank Cormier and Elsie Gresham Payne Wed.
Few of those who attended the Utahna theater last week and witnessed
the performance realized that on the stage there was being enacted a real romance and that In the one-act farce that had for its motif the meeting of a girl and the girl's brother's chum, a real romance was taking place. Through the whole ran a thread of romance which seemed real and live, and had those who witnessed it but knew they would have realized that it was real. In the marriage yesterday of Frank Clayton Cormier and Elsie Gresham Payne, whose stage names are Frank Clayton and Elsie Gresham, the real romance reached its culmination, and, like their stage romance, it is hoped that it will go on. Both Mr. and Mrs. Clayton were members of the Utahna Stock company during the past season and have become popular with the Ogden theater goers. Both met for the first time during the past season, but whether or not it was a case of love at first sight, neither will say, and the oracle doth not know, as his experience has been limited. For the present, the Claytons are engaged in vaudeville in a sketch that has won the approval of the audiences here this past season. It is understood that they have been engaged for the coming season in a new production that will be seen in Ogden.
This lady was quite a gal. She went into show business as a young lady and was a serious actress in Vaudeville. This is where she met her husband, Frank H. LaRue. (2nd husband)
Even when she was older and had her grandchildren around her, she was still the life of any party. She could quote The Raven, by Edgar Allen Poe so well it would make your hair stand on end with the chills she could cause. She also quoted another poem called The Old Yeller Dog that I used to love so much. I have no idea who wrote that one or where it came from, but I am so sorry it was lost to us with her death.
Elsie was a very wise lady, and seemed to have a 6th sense about people even before she got to know them. Even though I disregarded this trait, I never found her to be wrong in the end.

:
JOHN PABODIE: He probably arrived in the Plymouth Colony in 1635 or
1636, for his name appears on the list of freemen of the colony dated
March 7, 1636/37, and he was admitted and sworn with others whose names
were on that liston Jan. 2, 1637/8.
John Peabody received a grant of 10 acres of land Jan. 1, 1637/8, "on
Duxburrow side, lying betwixt the lands of William Tubs on the north side
and those of Experience Mitchell on the south side, and from the sea in
the west; and from Blew Fish River in the easte." Another tract, granted
him Nov. 2, 1640, was 30 acres "with meadow to it" at North River. He was
a member of the jury that convicted three young Englishmen of the murder
of an Indian on Sept. 4, 1638, and of the "Grand Inquest" at the court
June 4, 1639. He was one of the sureties on a neighbor's bond June 4,
1645. In 1645, John Paybody and his son, William, were among the
original proprietors of Bridgewater, Mass. He was a witness with Thomas
Winterton against Edward Richards when he wastried in court at Salem
4:9:1645, on a charge of making a false statement to them concerning
shipboard killings. Richards was convicted and fined 10 shillings and
ordered to acknowledge his sin before the congregation at Lynn.
