Njord of Noatun was then the sole sovereign of the Swedes; and he continu
ed the sacrifices, and was called the drot or sovereign by the Swedes, a
nd he received scatt and gifts from them. In his days were peace and plent
y, and suchgood years, in all respects, that the Swedes believed Njord ru
led over the growth of seasons and the prosperity of the people. In his ti
me all the diar or gods died, and blood-sacrifices were made for them. Njo
rd died on a bed of sickness, and before he died made himself be marked f
or Odin with the spear-point. The Swedes burned him, and all wept over h
is grave-mound.
Parents: Yngve.
General Notes: Child - Yngve Frey
Frey took the kingdom after Njord, and was called drot by the Swedes, a
nd they paid taxes to him. He was, like his father, fortunate in friends a
nd in good seasons. Frey built a great temple at Upsal, made it his chi
ef seat, and gave it all his taxes, his land, and goods. Then began the Up
sal domains, which have remained ever since. Then began in his days the Fr
ode- peace; and thenthere were good seasons, in all the land, which the S
wedes ascribed to Frey,so that he was more worshipped than the other god
s, as the people became much richer in his days by reason of the peace a
nd good seasons. His wife was called Gerd, daughter of Gymis, and their s
on was called Fjolne. Frey was called by another name, Yngve; and this na
me Yngve was considered long after in his race as a name of honour, so th
at his descendants have since been called Ynglinger. Frey fell into a sick
ness; and as his illness took the upper hand, his men took the plan of let
ting few approach him. In the meantime they raiseda great mound, in whi
ch they placed a door with three holes in it. Now when Frey died they bo
re him secretly into the mound, but told the Swedes he was alive; and th
ey kept watch over him for three years. They brought all the taxes into t
he mound, and through the one hole they put in the gold, through the oth
er the silver, and through the third the copper money that was paid. Pea
ce and good seasons continued. Parents: Njord.
He was married to Gerd about 255 in Sweden. Children were: Fjolne.

John W. Ray and Elizabeth Noble Family -- contributed by Ron Ray
The family of John W. Ray (~1777-1821) and Elizabeth Noble/s (~1781- ) bec ame stalwarts in Carroll County. Their beginnings were in Georgia and poss ibly North Carolina and Virginia. The first five of seven children were bo rn in Georgia. John and Elizabeth migrated to a little place called Whi te Sand near Prentiss, Lawrence Co, Mississippi about 1816. John died fi ve years later sometime before August 27, 1821, leaving Elizabeth with a l arge family to care for. The oldest son was Jonathan and being 18 yea rs of age, he was a great help to Elizabeth for the next year and a hal f. Then Jonathan married Elizabeth Askew and along with other members of t he family, migrated north to Hinds County before settling in the area ju st north of where Carrollton now stands. The oldest daughter Anna L. Ray w as 16 when her father died and later married Nathan Hooker. Not as mu ch is known about her next younger brother Joseph Ray who would have be en 11 when his father died. Joseph and two brothers William Ray and Jo hn A. Ray in 1849 were members of the Mason's Carrollton Lodge. At the ti me of their fathers death William would have been eight, Elizabeth six, Jo hn Alexander four and Edward was an infant. Their mother, Elizabeth Nob le Ray, married William Goodson on 21 April 1825. For awhile the five youn gest children lived with their mother and step father, William Goodson. Th en in 1834 William Goodson died and their whole family moved to Carroll Co unty in 1835. Carroll County had just been formed two years earlier and t he rolling, fertile hills and rich valley bottoms beckoned for new settler s. Also, in 1835 John Alexander and Edward moved in with their oldest brot her's (Jonathan's) family and he became their legal guardian. http://theu sgenweb.org/ms/carroll/pioneers/raynoblefamily.html

Source: Carroll Co., MS Cemetery Records, Collins Cemetery
Carroll Co., MS Cemetery Records, Collins Cemetery: A grave marker near Ca rrollton shows that Elizabeth's birthday (the year) matches that on the ma rker. (Elizabeth, sister of John A. Ray) Maybe that is one reason we don 't hear much about her. Perhaps she died soon after marriage (such as in c hild birth). The marker said "To the memory of Elizabeth/ consort of Jam es Collins/ Oct 17, 1815/ May 18, 1834."
1st meaning given in the dictionary for consort was "husband, wife, spouse ". James Collins stated in the Nathan Hooker court case that he had been c losely associated with the family for years. This could explain why Jam es Collins was often mentioned in records with the Rays.

Jonathan Ray and Elizabeth Askew Family
A written account of this family was published in the Conservative in 19 01 and by people who knew the family so it seems fitting that it be republ ished as it was written with a few dates added.
Jonathan married Elizabeth ASKEW, daughter of William ASKEW and Louisa ASK EW, on 21 Jan 1823 in , Lawrence, Mississippi. Elizabeth was born 13 Mar 1 807 in Georgia. She died 8 Jan 1873 in Carroll Co., Mississippi.
"Another pioneer Jonathan Ray [1803-1845], settled north of where Carrollt on now stands in 1832. Like others of the grand men who contributed so mu ch to open and develop the country, Jonathan Ray and family met the duti es of life in a new country bravely. His sons and daughters grew up to man hood and womanhood and in their turn made homes among the hills and ferti le valleys of North Carroll.
The oldest son, William [1825-1909], before he was grown, longed for a dif ferent style and manner of life and went to Williams Landing to clerk f or McConnell. Here he learned something of the mercantile business and beg an to develop those sterling traits of character that enabled him to ta ke a stand among the leading business men of the county. In a few yea rs he sold his business at Greenwood and removed to Carrollton. From th at early day to the present (1901) he has conducted this business at Carro llton without interruption--except during the four years of war. In 186 2, William Ray enlisted in a company which was assigned to duty in the 30 th Mississippi Regiment of Infantry. He was chosen First Lieutenant of t he company and soon afterwards, when his captain Irvin Scales was chosen L ieutenant Colonel of the Regiment, of Infantry. He was chosen First Lieute nant of the company and soon afterwards, when his Captain Irvin Scales w as chosen Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment, he became Captain. He took p art in some of the seven battles in which General Bragg's army was engag ed and was captured and confined on Johnson's Island until the close of t he war.
Of his brothers, Joseph [1830-1919], John [1824-1864], Wilson [1837- ], Je sse [1834-], Henry [1832-1872] and Robert [1839-1885] grew to manhood a nd all except Robert married and had interesting families. All took pa rt in the war except John who was a miller and as such was exempt from ser vice. In a private difficulty he killed a Captain Campbell and in turn w as killed by a brother of Campbell's in 1864.
The Rays young and old have been esteemed highly in the state wherever th ey went. They were true friends, loyal citizens, honest business men and c onscientious Christians. They met every duty as became the true and brav e. Captain William Ray was married three times, his wives being sisters, d aughters of Henry B. Latham who lived in the eastern part of the county. H enry Ray studied for the ministry and did most of his pastoral work in Ken tucky. Joseph married a daughter [Sarah Catherine] of Samuel Stanford a nd has spent his young manhood and middle life in the county and now he a nd his good wife are living quietly, enjoying the evening time of a well s pent honorable life. Wilson removed to Sunflower after the war and after o pening up a good tract of land, making a comfortable home for his famil y, died there. Jesse died near Carrollton in young manhood, leaving two ch ildren who removed from the county in 1887 or 1888. Robert gave four yea rs of faithful service to his country and although wounded a time or tw o, returned after the surrender and began life anew in Carrollton. He w as a great sufferer for several years before he died with rheumatism. Am id all the trials and sufferings he was patient, humble, hoping for fin al relief, which hadn't came until death claimed him. The two sisters of t he family married and lived in the county. The elder [Louiza] married Gre en Carpenter and they lived east of Carrollton, respected by all who kn ew them. The younger sister, Julia married C.[A.] B. Wadlington and they t oo lived east of Carrollton."
It is important to note a couple of discrepancies in the above article. >F rom court probate records we know that when Jonathan died in 1845, John w as the oldest son and James Madison was also a son of Jonathan's.

General Notes: Husband - John Noble
John was a Revolutionary War veteran and served as a private in the Delaware Line. He enlisted 24 March 1778 as a gunner in Capt. Peter Jaquett's battery, attached to Col. Hall's regiment. At his enlistment he was 5 ft. 6 in. tall, had black hair and was dark in complection. The equipment he was issued consisted of a gun, a bayonet, a nap sack, a canteen and a tomahawk. He fought in The Battle of Camden at Camden, South Carolina 16 August 1780 against the British. At that battle he was taken prisoner and sent to New York, New York. At some point he swore allegiance to the King of England and took a position in the ordnance department. After the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, John and Jemima went to Port Matoon, near Shelborne, Nova Scotia, Canada. The Loyalists who landed at Port Matoon were not happy with their conditions and they were granted land at Morristown (now St. Stephen), New Brunswick, Canada at the head of tide on the Schoodic (now St. Croix) River. Led by Nehemiah Marks, the Loyalists landed at their site on 24 June 1784. Sometime between the birth of his first two children, 1785 and 1788, he sold or traded his St. Stephen land and moved to the west side of Devil's Head on the St. Croix in the Red Beach village section of Calais, Maine. He and Jemima lived there raising a family and developing the land until they died. The Nobles were one of the fourteen families listed as living in Calais in 1790. In 1830 John owned 50 acres of land in Calais with a barn, a horse, a cow and swine, all valued at $520. John's brother James lived in the Calais area for a short time with John. Knowlton reports that both John and James are listed in Joseph Porter's store account book for 1790. James apparently died early in life and does not appear in any census records for Calais. (Sources: John Noble's pension file; The Loyalists of New Brunswick by Esther Wright; Loyalists to Canada by Theodore Holmes; Records of Calais, Maine, vol. 2 by Sharon Howland; Beginnings by The Rev. I. C. Knowlton; Delaware Archives: Revolutionary War)

According to Roy Stewart (1875-1952) Jemima was a prisoner of war just like her husband. She was imprisoned for aiding the enemy around Saratoga, New York. The "Boston Transcript" query #4906 states that Jemima was a native of Mamarone, New York and she had four sisters and one brother. Her sisters are Mary (Purdy) Sullivan, Eunice (Purdy) Lane, Phoebe (Purdy) (Burgess) Hadley and Sally (Purdy) Hoyt.
