NORTH TURNER - Charles Tanous, 72, died June 11 at his beloved home in North Turner, after a long battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He died as he wanted, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born in Van Buren, Oct. 5, 1934, the son of Alice and Thomas Tanous. He was the fifth of eight boys. He was educated in Van Buren public schools and graduated Van Buren Boys High in 1952.
Only 17, he left Van Buren and moved to Wilmington, Del., where he worked for a year as an automotive assembler for General Motors. He joined the Army in May 1953, and served in the military police until May 1955.
He worked briefly as a clerk with the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C., and attended George Washington University. Returning to Maine, he completed his bachelor of science in education at the University of Maine, Orono, and accepted a position as teacher/coach at Vinalhaven Jr.-Sr. High School.
While at Orono, he met the former Cynthia Downing. They were married on July 3, 1961, and he went on to complete his master's in educational administration. In 1963, after the birth of their first child, he accepted a position as principal at Buckfield High School. He served as principal from 1963 to 1967, and as superintendent of schools for SAD 39 and Peru from 1967 to 1968.
Three more children were born, and in 1968, he accepted the position of superintendent of schools in his hometown of Van Buren. In 1974, the family returned to their home in North Turner, and he began a new career in real estate, earning his broker's license in 1975.
He worked as a property manager for Northeast Realty Management and then as a housing management specialist for the Maine State Housing Authority. However, education was always his first love, and in 1986 he accepted the position of superintendent/principal of Islesboro Central School in Islesboro. In 1988, he became director of vocational Region 9 in Mexico, a position he held for five years before retiring in 1993.
Throughout his career, his major concern was for the underprivileged student whether due to poverty, disability, or geographic isolation. While in SAD 24, he was involved with the vocational movement as the state of Maine began developing the regional concept of delivering vocational education.
He co-authored a bill that lifted the moratorium on the development of regions and thereby assured that students across the state had an equal opportunity. While in Van Buren, he developed building plans and secured voter approval for a major addition to the high school, which incorporated excellent technical trades shops.
During this period, he was also instrumental in securing the funding for a new municipal library and a new community center, two projects dear to his heart. First and foremost, he was a strong man, a loving husband and father and a staunch friend maintaining friendships begun in childhood and developing new ones in each place he worked or volunteered and in Sarasota, Fla., during the winters of his retirement.
"Come and visit," were the words most often on his lips. He enjoyed traveling, sailing, hunting, fishing, playing cards, taking pictures, cheering on the Red Sox and the Patriots, having breakfast at the local store, and carrying out innumerable projects designed to improve the family home in North Turner.
His favorite event was Thanksgiving when he hosted up to 50 family members and friends. He and his wife have been members of St. Philips Church since 1974, during which time he served on the parish council, the religious education committee, the finance committee, and the diocesan human relations board representing District II.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; son, William Tanous, and his wife, Christine, of Auburn; daughter, Laura Tanous-Marshall, and her husband, Brian, of North Turner; daughter, Andrea Wilson, and her husband, Joseph, of Carlsbad, Calif.; son, Mark Tanous, and his wife, Jennifer, of North Turner; foster son, Dana Callan, of Belfast; seven grandchildren, Victoria Tanous, Catherine Tanous, Scott Marshall, Hunter Marshall, Haid Tanous, Marla Tanous and Ashley Callan; brother, Wakine Tanous, and wife, Ann, of East Millinocket; brother, Joseph Tanous of Hingham, Mass.; brother, Thomas Tanous, and wife, Esther, of Wenham, Mass.; sister-in-law, Marcia Farr, and husband, Don, of Portland; brother-in-law, Peter Downing, and wife, Diane, of Smithfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; and four brothers, Alexander Tanous, Nagel Tanous, Nolan Tanous and David Tanous.
General Notes: Child - Joseph V. Tanous

General Notes: Child - Mary Webster
There is disagreement about whether or not this Mary Webster married John Emery, Jr. Torrey ("The American Genealogist," C. A. Torrey, 17:96-99, 1940-41.) makes a case that she didn't. Two key points are (1) that the Newbury VRs have recorded that the Mary Webster who married John Emery in 1650 was the former Mary Shatswell who married John Emery Sr. and (2) that Mary very likely had died young because she was not mentioned in her mothers will of April 1, 1693. Hoyt, p. 152, also reports the 1650 marriage to be that of the former Mary Shatswell and John Emery, Sr.
Walter Goodwin Davis initially (1939) has that Mary Shatswell Webster married John Emery, Sr., in 1648, this because John, Sr.'s daughter Ebenezer was mentioned in Mary's will as her daughter. He believes that the 'widow of John' entry for the 1650 marriage was a mistaken addition on the part of the individual who made the town copies of the early births in 1690, and that that marriage was actually to Mary Webster and John Emery, Jr. Certainly the two of them knew each other well. It is true that Mary Webster was not mentioned in the interpretable parts of her mother's will of 1693. However much of that will is illegible, so it is not clear what the absence means.
Hoyt, p. 152, also reports the 1650 marriage to be that of the former Mary Shatswell and John Emery, Sr. and also that John Emery, Jr. married, in 1648, Mary Webster.
Later (1947) Davis lists John Emery, Jr. with a wife Mary, but provides no family birth name. He also makes no reference to his earlier publication, having dropped most of what is described above without comment.
What is reported here follows Davis' initial presentation, but it must be recognized that it is not at all clear that Mary Webster was the Mary who married John Emery, jr. Torrey's argument is plausible, but the best that can be said for it is that the records are ambiguous, not that there is proof that Mary Webster did not marry John Emery. By the same token, the ambiguity itself is testimony to the fact that we really can't be certain who the wife of John Emery was beyond the fact that her given name was Mary.

From Jane James, p. 12:
"Hannah (Webster) Emerson bore 15 children although only 8 of them lived to maturity. Her daughter, Elizabeth, must have caused her great anguish and her daughter, Hannah, great concern when she was captured by Indians. The time of Hannah's death is not known except that she was still living when Michael made his will in 1709. "

Doubtless after his d. the wid. Judith returned to Pts. bringing Stephen's dau. Abigail (whom she raised from early childhood) with her.

General Notes: Husband - Roger Shaw
Roger is first mentioned in history as appearing at General Court fromCambridge, Mass., in 1636, where in 1638 he was made "freeman", havingpreviously bought 200 acres of land and built a house on the south sideof Arrow Street.
In 1639 he was drawn Juryman and the following year was elected TownClerk of Cambridge. He was also selectman for the same town for theyears 1641-42-43 and 45.
The settlement of Hampton (formally known as Winnacunnet) was authorizedby General Court in 1638, and incorporated in 1639, Roger's nameappearing as one of the petitioners. In 1648 he moved to Hamptonsettling his real estate in Cambridge consisting of a house and 200 Acresof land and settled on his first purchase of land, some part of which isstill owned by his descendants. The ESSEX ANTIQUARIAN
Edited by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, The Essex Antiquarian
The Essex Antiquarian was published from 1897 to 1909 by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, both noted Essex County Genealogists and Historians. The purpose and accomplishments of the Antiquarian are best described in the words of Perley and Dow, as published in the final edition Vol. 13, No. 4, October 1909:
"The Essex Antiquarian was purposed to fill a want. It was designed to be a leader in scientific historical research; and to present copies or abstracts of records and compilations in an exhaustive and systematic manner, so that as far as the publication extended further investigation along those lines would be needless. Repeated examinations of records tend to their destruction, and thousands of dollars have been spent locally upon the same records for the same purpose by various persons who were ignorant of costly examinations made by others. This purpose, if prosecuted, would preserve the records and make further expenditure of money and labor unnecessary. This has been the particular reason of the appearance of the genealogies in alphabetical order, the gravestone inscriptions, abstracts of the Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files, old Norfolk county records, all wills in the order of their probate, Essex Gazette notes, abstracts of titles to land, etc., as shown in Salem, Haverhill, Ipswich and Marblehead in 1700, and in Georgetown and Topsfield in 1800. During the thirteen years of its existence there have been published in The Essex Antiquarian genealogies of all families from Abbe to Brown; all gravestone inscriptions dated prior to the year 1800 in Amesbury, Andover, Beverly, Boxford, Bradford, Danvers, Essex, Georgetown, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Haverhill and Ipswich; all wills proved in the county prior to June, 1666; the record of the Essex County Revolutionary soldiers and sailors alphabetically to Brown; abstracts of the old Norfolk records to 1675; Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files to 1659; and abstracts of all records in the first ten volumes of the Suffolk county registry of deeds relating to Essex county persons and property, where parties resided or property was located in Essex county, covering the period prior to 1678." The ESSEX ANTIQUARIAN
During the thirteen years of its existence there have been published in The Essex Antiquarian genealogies of all families from Abbe to Brown; all gravestone inscriptions dated prior to the year 1800 in Amesbury, Andover, Beverly, Boxford, Bradford, Danvers, Essex, Georgetown, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Haverhill and Ipswich; all wills proved in the county prior to June, 1666; the record of the Essex County Revolutionary soldiers and sailors alphabetically to Brown; abstracts of the old Norfolk records to 1675; Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files to 1659; and abstracts of all records in the first ten volumes of the Suffolk county registry of deeds relating to Essex county persons and property, where parties resided or property was located in Essex county, covering the period prior to 1678."
