Elder Brown, as he was afterwards called, moved with his family, in May, 1792, to the wilderness of New York. The year previous he went on horseback to Albany, NY, and procured a deed of land in the town of Brookfield. During the summer he made a clearing and built a log house, and in the autumn returned to his family in Stonington. The following May, with his wife and children in an ox-cart and he on horseback, they began their logn and perilous journey to Brookfield.
The early training of these children was in their New England home in Stonington -- not only from father and mother, but also from grandfather and grandmother, for this indefatigable man of God had not only gathered a church, but guilt a house of worship, largely by his courage and energy and with his own hands. Here these grandchildren listened to the gospel as it fell from his anointed lips. This fact must not be forgotten, for Ruth, the oldens, was twenty-four years old, and Phebe, the youngest, was five years old, when they emigrated to Brookfield. Thus in their childhood days began the development of Christian life and character which continued, with increasing activities, in their new pioneer home and its characteristic of their descendants to the present time

He married 10 Jan. 1677, Elizabeth d. of John Brown of Watertown, as Bond, 145, tells; and in 1680 took a grant of land at Falmouth from President Danforth, and bought more; but on destruction by the Indians and French, 1690, he removed to Lynn, but went back to Falmouth 1719. He left widow Elizabeth and children Samuel, John, Ebenezer, Thomas, David, Sarah, and Abigail, of whom descendants are found in the vicinity to this day. Gradual change occurs in his name to Gustan, or Gustin, and is justified by his own writing but the wild perversity of a scrivener had pleasure in turning him into Augustine John. See Suff. Phipsburg: constitutes the southern point of Sagadahoc County. It lies between the Kennebec River on the east and the New Meadows Harbor and West Bath, on the west; is very nearly 12 1/2 miles in extreme length and an average width of about 3 miles. Phipsburg contains the site of the earliest English colony in New England. The peninsula on the eastern side of the southern part, that bears on its north-eastern point the lofty granite walls of Fort Popham, still bears the marks of its occupancy by Popham's colony in 1607. At Small Point Harbor, on the south-west side of the town, is the site of a fishing settlement established by the Pejepscot proprietors in 1716, with the name of AUGUSTA. Dr. Oliver Noyes, one of the proprietors, was the principal director and patron. Captain John Penhallow, author of a noted history of the Indian Wars, in 1717, resided here. Dr. Noyes, in 1716, erected here a stone fort 100 feet square, for the purpose of protecting the settlers who were coming rapidly. A sloop named 'Pejepscot' was employed as a packet between this Augusta and Boston, carrying out lumber and fish, and bringing back merchandise and settlers. The settlement continued untill Lovewell's War, when the houses were burnt and the fort destroyed by the Indians. In 1737 an attempt at re-settlement was made. Among those who came at this time were three families of Halls, Clark, Wallace, Wyman, James Doughty, DAVID GUSTIN, Jeremiah Springer, Nicholas Rideout and John Owens. Phipsburg was included in the Pejepscot grant to Purchase and Way, and after Whaton;s Purchase their lands were confirmed anew to some of the purchasers. The south part of the town was bought of the Indians by Thomas Atkins, the remainder by John Parker, Jr., in 1659, and the northern part was assigned to his brother-in-law, Thomas Webber, who also obtained an Indian title. Silvanus Davis, widely known in his day, owned and improved a farm south of Webber's. In 1734 Col. Arthur Noble built a strong garrison on the north side of the peninsula near Fiddler's Reach. The first house of worship known in this settlement was erected near this garrison in 1736. Some thirty-five years later an Episcopal church was erected on the site of this first house. The present Congregational church at the Center was built about 1802. The extention of the North Yarmouth Line direct to the ocean brought the southern part of Phipsburg into that town; but the whole, for convenience to the inhabitants, was in 1741, annexed to Georgetown. In 1814 Phipsburg was separated from the town and incorporated under its present name, which was adopted in honor of Sir William Phips. Eminent names among the citizens of this town in days that are past are Hon. Mark Langdon Hill, Andrew Reed, Parker McCobb, James Bowker, William M. and Thomas M. Reed. The town of Phipsburg was incorporated in 1814.

Nicholas was one of the early Settlers of Taunton. When and how he ca me to New England is not known. He was made a freeman in Dorchester in 164 3, and about that time he married Susanna. He was 25 years of age. In 164 7, he bought from Henry Woolcot a tract of land in that part of Dorchest er which was called Uncaty, now the town of Milton. He cleared a pa rt of it and built a house, but before he was able to enjoy the benefi ts of his labor, he was sued by a Mr. Hutchinson, who claimed a prior titl e. Hutchinson obtained judgment and ousted him from the premises. Howeve r, a Dorchester history entry of 21 May 1656 indicates that Nicholas regai ned his property.
In 1657, he was included in the list of the inhabitants of Taunton who h ad taken the oath of fidelity. In 1668, Nicholas, his son Nicholas, and h is son-in-law, Samuel Hall, were members of a company which purchased a la rge tract of land, the Taunton North Purchase. In 1672, they were among t he associates who bought the Taunton South Purchase from King Philip, an I ndian leader.
The following entry is of quaint interest: 1677, July 3. Vol. V, p. 1 62 P C: "Nicholas White, of Taunton, for selling liquor to the Indians sev erall times Contrary to the law of this govermnemt, was fined the su me of thirty pounds, to the collonies use."
