Jane Dowdle Smith, Attorney, 'An Absolutely Brilliant Woman'

As Washington state assistant attorney general for 25 years, a mother of three and an avid tennis player, Jane Dowdle Smith had it all.
"She was an absolutely brilliant woman," said her legal secretary and friend, Beverly Walter. "I've never met a woman as smart as she was and not only in the legal profession. She could talk to you about anything you wanted to talk about.
"She used a little profanity in her language, and people were a little afraid of her. She was a tiger."
Mrs. Smith died June 7 of complications from a stroke. She was 79.
Bright, pretty and mischievous as a toddler in her hometown of Douglas, Ariz., Mrs. Smith moved with her family to Catalina Island in Southern California, where she went to high school. She played violin and competed in tennis - once against legendary film star Errol Flynn.
Earning a master's degree in political science at UCLA in 1940, she headed to New York to study medicine but lost interest and caught a bus back to California by way of Seattle.
The city's beauty captivated her. She got a job as a Boeing Co. expediter and enrolled in the University of Washington Law School, also serving as editor of The Law Review.
She earned a law degree in 1946 and landed the plum job of assistant attorney general.
"Jane was representing the Department of Health and was the authority on Native-American jurisdictional problems - who had rights on tribal lands," said Walter.
"She also was representing the Department of Health, the Washington State Medical Disciplinary Board . . . and the Washington State History Association."
In 1971, Mrs. Smith became deputy prosecuting attorney of Thurston County. Two years later, she set up private practice in Elma and McCleary, Grays Harbor County. She did a lot of pro bono work and worked on library boards in the evening.
She retired in 1980 and moved to Seattle in 1982 to be near her family.
"She loved trial work the most," said her son Graham Smith of Seattle. "At the time she was working, attorneys did everything and didn't specialize as they do today. I was most struck by her intelligence, quick wit and sense of humor."
Mrs. Smith liked to keep busy, going to ballet and the theater in her free time.
"Jane loved to read, mostly history and biography, and in later years, spy novels," said her sister, Charlotte Dowdle of Seattle.
Mrs. Smith's other survivors include her children Curtis Smith and Julie Smith, both of Seattle; her brother, James Dowdle, of Campbell, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Services have been held. Remembrances may go to any charity.
