JOHN PECKHAM was born in England and baptized Apr. 8. 1595 . In 16 34 he w as chaplain to the Earl of Hertford and ther e is no doubt but th at as cha plain to that nobleman he mad e the acquaintance of Sir Henry Va ne, the yo unger. There ca n be little doubt that the extreme theologic al vie ws of Si r Henry Vane became the convincing argument that turned J oh n Pec kham from his allegiance to the Church of England. The se mo re or less ext reme views may be described in the langu age of that d ay as those of a Bap tist Lollard. John Peckha m was in Rhode Island in 16 38. He is suppos ed to have com e to Boston in 1634 with Sir Henry Van e. In Bosto n, he me t Mary Clarke, who had accompanied her brother, Dr. J ohn Cl ark e, to Boston. While John Peckham's name does not appea r in t he list of th ose disarmed in Boston, nor among the fo llowers of Wheelwri ght, nor o ne of the signers of the Ports mouth Covenant, yet he must ha ve been o ne of the party know n as the Ann Hutchinson Party, who found ed a settleme nt o n the north end of Rhode Island, the town of Portsmout h. O n March 1 6, 1641, he was admitted a freeman. In 1641 he wa s o ne of the ten male me mbers of the First Baptist Church o f Newport in fu ll communion. He had fi ve children by his fi rst wife, Mary Clarke. Aft er her death he married, E leano r (probably born Peckham) by whom he h ad seven children. Jo hn Peckh am died in 1681 and Mary Clarke in 1648.

Moses CRAIG, Indian Commissioner of Andover (Victoria Co.) died of paralysis at his home in Perth Centre on Sunday morn. His remains were interred on Tuesday in the F.C.B. cemetery at that place, the funeral being attended by Revs. Sisson, Orser and Vanwart. A correspondent writes that the deceased was the youngest son of the late Sgt. Daniel CRAIG who was a member of the first military school or encampment ever held in Fredericton upwards of 75 years ago and upon his discharge from service was granted a plot of land about 200 acres off what is known as the Tobique Indian Reserve in Perth. Here he lived and raised his family and died Jan. 24th, 1874. Here his family lived and died, not one of the six boys ever as much as went farther away from his home than St. John, and then only for a few days. The old home now passes to the Craig family of the third generation. He leaves a wife and family of nine children. - nearly all are grown up to mourn their loss. - 'Gleaner'
