There is some question as to why young Benjamin would head off to British Nova Scotia after his father, age about 24, had apparently died at the Roxbury encampment, at which Patriots were erecting defenses against the British invaders in Boston Harbor.
This Benjamin may be of quite another New England ARNOLD ancestry.

Sometime around 1920, the marriage went souor and George was rumored to be having an affair (true or not). With increasing pressure from Emma's sister and family, Emma and George became estranged, and there was the story that George had tried to come by the house to patch things up and the Amelia wouldn't let him speak with Emma, so he never stepped on their doorstep again. George left The dayton area and worked a qauite a few types of jobs and ended up in Canada. In the meantime, Emma filed papers for divorce and listed "abandonment" as the cause. Emma never saw George again, nor did his son, Raymond.
It has been told, George remarried a woman in Canada, a nurse, and the had children, twins, boy and girl named Robert 'Bob' and Elizabeth 'Betty'.

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 3, Ed. 1, Tree #0998, Date of Import: Jun 4, 2001]
William Cheney was a very early resident of Roxbury, in the colony ofMassachusetts Bay, in New England (now included in the city of Boston). The oldest records of that town which have been brought down to moderntimes are contained in a volume whose opening sentence says that the bookwas bought in 1639 for the purpose of recording various matters relatingto the inhabitants. Its earliest entries are not dated. One of these isa list of the men who owned land and lived in the town, entitled, "A noteof the estates and persons of the Inhabitants of Rocksbury," Seventy menare enrolled; they range from "Edward Pason," possessor of 3 acres ofground, to "Mr. Thomas Dudley" with 356 acres. "Wm. Cheiney" is thefortieth name with 24 1/2 acres, showing that he was about the average inwealth. This list is on a page where the year 1640 is the date of theentry on the following page. A number of circumstances indicate that thelist was written near the close of the year 1640. On other pages of theold record book there are deeds of land recorded and in the bounds of twoof these " the land of Cheney" and the "meadow of Cheyney" are mentioned; both were made in 1640. These records demonstrate the fact that WilliamCheney was a land-holder and a resident in Roxbury before 1640; and theydo no more.
William Cheney's homestead lay in an end of the old highway which isstill a well trodden thorough -- Dudley Street -- on the southeast side, near its junction with Warren St. The other tracts of land were widelyscattered. "Wiliam Cheiney his house barne Garden and land theirto abouttwo accres and a halfe butting upon William Parkes south and east andupon the highway north and west; And sixteene accres in the great lottsmore or lesse betweene the lands of John Johnson towards the west, andthe schoole lands towards the east. And ten accres of swampe neare thegreat lotts lying betweene Giles Pason, and Ralph Hemingway, and theheirs of Samuell Hagborne. and six accres of salt marsh in Gravellypoynt. And six accres of fresh meadow in the great meade, upon JohnStowe his heires east, and Richard Sutton west, with two rodds wide ofupland at both ends and so upon the commons. And seaven accres more orlesse of errable land upon Richard Sutton north, John Gorton west andjpon John Turner south. And in the first and third allottment of the latdevission being the fift lott lying betweene John Johnson and heires ofGeorge Alcocke threescore and sixteene accres and a halfe and ten rod.And foure and twenty accres of land more or lesse lying in the greatlotts bounded on the way to the fresh meadow on the east the land of theheires of John Levens on the south the schoole land and Richard Peacockesnorthwest and upon Giles Pason and the highway northerly. and threeaccres and a halfe of meadow lying in the fresh meades butting east uponmy owne fresh meade and upon John Peirpoynt west. And an accre of landcommonly called the wolf trapp bought of Humphrey Johnson lying on thenorth of the land of John Gorton and west upon the highway. And halfe ofsixteene accres of woodland lately the land of Richard Sutton, but boughtby him of John Johnson." The deed of "Wolf Trapp" is not on record, though there are deeds recorded whereby lands adjoining this piece wereconveyed and called "Wolf Trap." showing that the name applied to quite alarge tract, perhaps a valley where many wolves had been taken.
The annals of the town do not give the proceedings of the townmeetings in the earliest days, but there are a few movements of thecitizens which are noted well. One of these is the founding in 1645 ofthe Roxbury Free School, supported by voluntary subscriptions but managedby town officers. The original paper with its autograph signatures isextant. It shows William Cheney not only as a subscriber to the fund butas one of the few leading men who specially guaranteed to the town thepayment of their yearly contributions. His subscription to theschool-fund was eight shillings a year, - more than the average. It isdisappointing to find that our ancester made his "mark" upon thesedocuments. Possibly his eyesight had failed; but as he was onlyforty-one years old the probability is that he had not learned to write,as was the case with a great majority of the people of England in thatage. Yet he must have been considered by his neighbors a man of goodgeneral information and judgment, or he would not have had the honor ofbeing chosen as a member of the board of directors, - "feoffees," -- ofthis Roxbury Latin School, who had the employing of the teacher and otheradministrative matters in charge. To go back again in history, we findthat William Cheney was elected to the board of assessors of the infantborough at an early day. "Feb. 21, 1648 It was voted that John Johnson[Edward] Deneson and John Gore with Mr. John Alcocke... William Cheneyshould be the men that shall... ensuing year rate men according to theirestat... the defraying of ye fore sayd Charges of ye Ministry." A fewyears afterward he was called upon to use that good judgment andfair-mindedness which he seems to have possessed in good amount inanother matter. "It was voted & agreed to by all the inhabitants Febru.23. (52) that their should be raised for the maintenance of the ministryfor this yeare insuing the sume of six score pounds to be borne by allthe inhabitants in an equall proportion for the proportioning of whichsume the inhabitants of Roxsbury have chosen the two Deacons & JohnJohnson, William Cheiney Edward Denison John Ruggles sr. & Thomas Weldwhich sume of six score pounds is to be devided betweene Mr. John Eliot &Mr. Samuell Danfoorth in an equall proportion:" One of the offices thatcalled for promptness and energy and for good faculty of dealing with menwas the position of constable. He was the policeman on disagreeableoccasions; the messenger of the selectmen sometime; but his chief carewas collecting taxes. He had a "rate" committed to him, with a sum to beobtained from each adult male inhabitant; and he had authority to pay outsums of money on selectment's orders. At the end of the year he made adetailed report. If he did notpossess a good education he must have asharp faculty of reckoning and a strong memory of names and numbes.William Cheney was one of the two constables in 1654/5 and his finalaccount was approved Feb. 13, 1655/6. But the citizens were not contentto have him simply perform the toilsome work of a constable. Jan. 19,1656/7 he was elected a member of the board of selectmen, associated withmen of education and rank. Jan. 18, 1663, he wa smade one of a committeeto inspect Peter Gardner's "leanetoo" and "the fence that doth range fromit" to see that they did "not intrench upon the high way." We havealready seen that he was chosen one of the feofees of the Free School in1664; and on the town record we find him written down "as Feoffee" in anagreement touching some money belonging to he school fund and affixinghis mark ("W") to the page along with half a dozen regular signatures,Jan, 25, 1666/7. May 23, 1666, he was made a "freeman of the Colony"which made him eligible to colonial office and capable of voting onmatters relating to the general government. But he did not live to makeuse of this franchise. He fell sick in the spring of 1666/7, as we learnfrom the opening phrases of his will, and after a few weeks he passedbeyond the reach of care or pain. The town clerk made this entry in hislist of persons deceased; "William Cheney, aged 63 yeares, died June the30 day, 1667"; and the hand of either Rev. John Eliot or Rev. SamuelDanforth wrote in the church book among the burials: "1667. Moneth 5 day2 Willian Cheany sen."

General Notes: Husband - Jacob Tripler
Jacob's birth in 1793 is attested by writing on the back of a photograph which shows him as a rather old man. The writi ng mentions his birth year and also states that as a six-year-old child he was "passed up to George Washington in his carriage". Jacob is listed as a 60-year old liquor dealer in the 1860 census for Philadelphia, Ward 13 but he must have been older than that if the story about George Washington is true (Washington died in 1799). The authority for the names of the children listed here include the 1860 US census which lists Thomas, John, Margaret, and Caroline in the household of Jacob and the report of a 1828 "St. Nicholas letter" written to Henry, Thomas, Jacob, and Charles. The 1860 US census lists a William Tripler who was then a 31 year old shoemaker. He could be another son of Jacob but there is no other evidence. A painted mineature portrait of Jacob was given by his grandaughter, Louisa Copeland, to Mary W. Milman (Mary Tripler Wainwright). The portrait was later given to Thomas E. Wainwright by Mary's daughter, Mary Louise.
General Notes: Wife - Margaretta E.
There is mention in James Wainwright's notes of several poems dated 1809 by Margaretta E. Conarroe. She was at Mr. Moulder's academy in 1811. If she is the same as this Margaretta E. it might explain the middle name of her son Thomas. It would then seem unlikely that Jacob Tripler had a brother Thomas Conarroe Tripler.

General Notes: Child - Thomas C. Tripler
Thomas C. is listed as a 40 year old clerk living in his father's household in the 1860 US census. The 1857 Philadelphia Directory lists Thomas C. Tripler as a druggist. The 1874 Directory lists Thomas C. as a bookkeeper living at 915 Green the same address as Jacob, presumably his father. In 1883 the Directory lists him as a Secretary still living at the same address as Jacob. He is very likely the "Uncle Thomas" who gave a silver cup to Thomas Eyre Tripler.
General Notes: Child - Jacob Tripler
The 1850 Philadelphia census lists a Jacob Tripler, age 25, a clerk and his wife Elizabeth, age 20 with no children. The 1857 Philadelphia Directory lists Jacob L. Tripler as a provisioner. The LDS International Geneological Index notes that a female child was born on 1 Nov. 1859 to Jacob Tripler of Camden, New Jersey and his wife Louisa. A list of Camden County, N.J. marriages includes Jacob Tripler and Louisa Horner married 2/10/1859. The1860 US census for Camden, NJ lists Jacob, a provision dealer age 37 and Louisa, age 22 and their children Elizabeth, age 6 and Margarite, age 6 months . If these two are the same Jacob Tripler then the birth dates disagree by about two years. Elizabeth may have been his first wife and the mother of the child Elizabeth. Louisa was rather young to be Elizabeth's mother. This speculation is reflected in the family data recorded here. The 1880 US census shows Jacob Tripler, age 53, living in Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania with his wife Louisa,41 and his children Margaretta C.,19 and Louisa,9. In the same household that year was Jacob's brother in law, Mathias Horner, 26 and his nephew Edwin C. Horner, 4. The 1900 US census has Jacob Tripler, born September 1823 living in Landsdown, Delaware County, Pennsylvania with his wife Louisa, born May 1840 and his daughter Margaretta C., born July 1865.
General Notes: Child - Charles Tripler
In the 1860 US census for Philadelphia Charles is listed as a provisions dealer. His household includes his wife Elizabeth, an Irish domestic, Catherine McFadden, age 29, and a 59 year old woman, Susan L. Child. The Elizabeth Tripler we have assumed to be the sister of Charles' father was married to Ezekiel Child who would have been of an age similar to Susan's. She could be his sister.
General Notes: Child - John K. Tripler
The 1857, 1874, and 1883 Philadelphia Directories list John K. Tripler as a clerk living at the same address as Jacob and Thomas C. Tripler. In the 1860 US census he is listed as a dealer. A letter dated 2/27/1873 from John's brother Henry to Henry's daughter Martha "Pattie" states "Uncle John goes to Media every day for the Marshall's trial". What Media could be or who was the Marshall remain undetermined.

One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families
Author: John Osborne Austin
This book contains the history and genealogy of the Austin family of Rhode Island.
Bibliographic Information: Austin, John Osborne. One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families. Privately Printed. Massachusetts. 1893.
1--STEPHEN.
Wherwell, South Stonham, Hampshire, Eng.
Boston, Lynn, Ipswich, Yarmouth, Newbury, Mass., Hampton, N. H., Portland, Me., Hampton, N. H., Hackney, Middlesex, Eng.
Governor Winthrop says that he suffered much at the hands of the Bishops; and in consequence of these persecutions he went to
Holland, and resided there several years.
1581, 11, 7. He entered St. John's College, Oxford, and took his degree of B.A., 1586, 2, 2.
1587, 7, 17. Vicar of the Church of Holy Cross and St. Peter at Wherwell, presented to him by William West, Lord de la War.
1605, 8, 9. The Vicarage was given to John Bates, the vacancy being caused by the "ejection of Stephen Bachiler." He was now
a nonconformist.
1631, 6, 23. He, aged seventy years, resident at South Stonham, Southampton, and his wife Helen, aged forty-seven, had license
given them to go to Flushing to visit their sons and daughters, and so to return within two months. Two days later, Ann Sanburn,
widow, aged thirty years, resident in the Strand, had licence to go to "Vlishing."
1632, 6, 5. Arrived in Boston in ship "William & Francis," 88 days from London. With him were part of his family, including
his daughter Theodate, and her husband Christopher Hussey; and three children of his daughter Ann, who had died, as had her
husband, John Sanborn. His grandson, Nathaniel Batchelder, he either brought with him, or sent for later.
1632, 10, 3. Ordered by the Court in Boston that "Mr. Bachiler is requested to forbear exercising his rights as pastor, etc., for
his contempt of authority, and until some scandals be removed."
1633, 3, 4. Court removed the above injunction.
1635, 5, 6. Lynn. Freeman. He came thence soon after landing, and with a few others established a church, of which he was
the first pastor.
1635. He requested dismission of himself and the first members of the church, which was granted. In a letter from this place
soon after his arrival, he complains to Gov. Winthrop, of a proposed sale of four hogsheads of pease; asking that the sale be
stayed. He says they came in ship "Whale," about the same time that he arrived in the "William & Francis." He alludes to
the "Company of Husbandmen" owing him a "debt of near œ100, which I lent the company in as good gold as can be weighed
with the scales." The pease would partly offset this, and as a further argument he says, "I have disposed of part of them and
the residue are exceedingly wanting in mine own congregation." The company he alludes to had procured a grant called the
"Plough Patent" (from name of the ship that brought it) of the Plymouth Company.
1636, Ipswich. Here 50 acres were granted him, but he soon left through "differences."
1637. Yarmouth. In the very cold winter of this year, he went on foot with friends, one hundred miles to Yarmouth. He was
at this time seventy-six years of age. (Yarmouth was not settled permanently till later.)
1638, 7, 6. Newbury. He was granted lands by the town.
1638, 9, 6. The General Court granted him a commission to settle at Hampton with his company.
1638, 10, 9. He wrote from Newbury to John Winthrop, jr. "So it is that we are resolved, God so consenting, the second working
day of the next week, to set forward towards our plantation (Hampton); preparing thereto the day before." He intends to
go by a shallop and he hopes Mr. Winthrop and Mr. Bradstreet will if possible be ready to accompany them. "This day had
not an hindrance fallen out, I had brought your father-in-law's two stalls of bees to you; for that one of them hath robbed and
spoiled a stall of mine, as the manner of bees is, and I cannot tell how to proceed against the offenders, to have law and justice
against them; but by removing the thievish stall and keeping in the innocent till they are removed. The Lords good eye be
ever upon you and yours, and so I rest on Him that is all sufficient, Yours in all Christian office and service, his most unworthy
Stephen Bachiler."
Page 38
1639. The inhabitants of Ipawich voted him another grant of 60 acres upland, if he would return to them and reside three years
there. He did not accept.
1639, 7, 5. He and his son-in-law, Christopher Hussey, sold their lands in Newbury, houses, etc., for "six score pounds," and
removed to Hampton.
1639, 9, 14. Upon the request of the pastor (Mr. Bachiler) made known to the Court, the plantation received the name of Hampton.
The name it previously held was Winnicunnet.
1639, 10, 18. He wrote Mrs. Winthrop alluding to his daily prayers for the Governor and his wife and children, and presents her
with a book, hoping "that my token may in something help you forward as a sweet gale of wind in your back in the way of
God. Looking among some special reserved books and lighting on this little treatise of one of my own poor children, I conceived
nothing might suit more to my love and your acceptance."
1640. The town of Hampton gave him 300 acres, and he gave them a bell for their church. About this time, being eighty years
of age and having a "comely and lusty wife," yet for alleged irregularity with a neighbor's wife (to which, it was declared, he
finally confessed though first denied), he was excommunicated from the church and pastorate of Hampton. Soon after, his
house was destroyed by fire.
1641. Casco, Maine.
1643. He was restored to communion but not to the office of minister. He wrote this year from Hampton to the church in Boston,
alluding to his wanderings from Lynn to Newbury, Hampton, Casco, etc., and complains of Rev. Timothy Dalton, "who
hath done all and been the cause of all the dishonor that hath accrued to God, shame to myself, and grief to all God's people,
by his irregular proceedings and abuse of the power of the church in his hand, by the major part cleaving to him being his
countrymen and acquaintances in Old England." He says he shall not depart from Hampton till he has cleared and vindicated
himself "or God for me" of these "causes and wrongs I have suffered of the church I live yet in." In this, as in other letters,
he intersperses Latin quotations. His stay at Casco (Portland) must have been brief, but while there he was chosen umpire in
cases of difference between George Cleeves, and John Winter; Cleeves having said that Winters wife was the drunkenest
woman in Plymouth, England, while Winter had appropriated Iands of Cleeves. The various suits were left to arbitration of
three men, with Stephen Bachiler as umpire. The decision was that John Winter should have house and land on paying
œ60 to Cleeves, and the latter should "Christianly acknowledge his failing thereby" against Mrs. Winter, first to arbitrators and
then to her.
1644, 5, 18. He wrote to Governor Winthrop of the great loss he had sustained by burning of his house at Hampton. He estimated
the loss at œ200 and "my whole study of books," closing "I cease and rest in the Lord, Yours to command his most unprofitable
servant Stephen Bachiler," and adds in P. S. "Bear with my blotted paper, my maid threw down myne ink glass upon
it and I had not rescribendi tempus."
1644. The people of Exeter desired him to come to them, but the Court laid an injunction on it.
1647, 5, 3. To Governor Winthrop he writes, "It is no news to certify you that God hath taken from me my dear helper and
yokefellow, and whereas by approbation of the whole plantation of Strawberry Bank [Portsmouth] they have assigned an
honest neighbor, to have some eye and care towards my family for washing, baking and other such common services; it is a
world of woes to think what rumors distracting spirits raise up; that I am married to her, or certainly shall be, and cast on her
such aspersions without ground or proof, as that I see not how possibly I shall subsist in the place to do them that service from
which otherwise they cannot endure to hear, I shall depart."
1647, 9, 8. He made a deed while resident at Portsmouth, "for and in consideration, natural love and affection towards my four
grandchildren; John, Stephen and William Sanborn, and Nathaniel Bachiler; all, now or lately, of Hampton," etc.
1650. Being now eighty-nine years old, he married his third wife, and in May was fined œ10 for not publishing his intentions of
marriage; half of the fine being remitted, however, in October following. The same year on account of their matrimonial disagreements,
the Court orders them to live together as man and wife, and either deserting the other to be arrested.
1651. His wife Mary was sentenced for adultery, and she and her paramour whipped.
1653 or 4. He went back to England, taking his grandson, Stephen Sanborn with him.
1656. His wife Mary prayed for divorce, because he had gone to England and taken a new wife, leaving her with children who
were sick, etc. Savage says, "he probably had good reason for leaving her." He died at Hackney, England. Lewis, in the
History of Lynn, says of him: "Mr. Bachiler had undoubtedly many virtues or he would not have had many friends, and they
would not have continued with him through all the changes of his varied life;" and he quotes Mr. Prince as saying that he was
"a man of fame in his day, a gentleman of learning and ingenuity, and wrote a fine and curious hand." (His signature and seal
appended to letters, may be seen in Mass. Hist. Coll., Vol. VII, 4th series.) Johnson in his "Wonder working Providence" thus
addresses him:
"Through ocean large, Christ brought thee for to feed
His wondering flock, with's word thou oft has taught;
Then teach thyself, with others thou hast need.
Thy flowing fame unto low ebb is brought."

sale of four hogsheads of pease; asking that the sale be
stayed. He says they came in ship "Whale," about the same time that
he arrived in the "William & Franc is." He alludes to
the "Company of Husbandmen" owing him a "debt of near œ100, which I
lent the company in as good gold as can be weighed
with the scales. " The pease would partly offset this, and as a
further argument he says, "I h ave disposed of part of them and
the residue are exceedingly wanting in mine o wn congregation." The
company he alludes to had procured a grant called the
"Plough Patent" (from name of the ship that brought it) of the

Data on the Thomas Spinney family comes from Everet S. Stackpole's book on "Old Kittery and Her Families," originally published in 1903. The family is found elsewhere on internet sites, however I beleive that most of the data shown is derived from Stockpole's work.
In the book, Thomas Spinney is said to have lived at Eliot Neck and to have been a weaver.
