William Gleason's records - bill@vergers.org:
BENJAMIN GLEASON, a prosperous farmer and stock-broker of OAKLANS, is a
native of CANAAN, Somerset County MAINE; born March 9, 1828, son of
BRYANT and BETSEY (Corson) GLEASON. Both hisparents were natives of
OAKLAND MAINE. His paternal grandfaterh, ELIJAH GLEASON, who was born in
CONNECTICUT, was an early settler of OAKLAND, which town in earlier ddays
was known as WEST WATERVILLE. BRYANT and BETSEY (Corson) GLEASON were
the parents of twelve (12) children, of whom but two are now living;
BENJAMIN, the subject of this sketch; and ELIZABETH (Mrs. ORRIN McINTIRE
of OAKLAND).
BENJAMIN GLEASON's boyhood up to the age of fifteen years waspassed in
his native town of CANAAN. He then accompanied his parents to BINGHAM
MAINE where he resided for about eight (8) years. In 1853, partaking of
the prevailing gold excitement consequent upon the discoveries of gold in
California and Australia, he resolved to try his fortune at the diggings,
andtook ship from New York for Australia, that country being then the
scene of the latest discoveries. He reamined at the Australian gold
fields for a year, meeting with average success; but finding there that,
as in California, thespeedy acquistion of wealth fell to the lot of but
few individuals, the experience of the great majority being hard work and
hard living for little more than a baare existence, he returned in the
fall of 1854 to his native countryand State. Settling on his present
farm in OAKLAND, which contains two hundred (200) acres of good land, he
has since followed general farming quite successfully.
Mr GLEASON married March 28 1855, CAROLINE V McINTIRE, a native of
BINGHAM MAINE and a daughter of WASHINGTON and BETSEY (Spaulding)
McINTIRE. Mrs. GLEASON's father, WASHINGTON McINTIRE, was a prominent
citizen of BINGHAM, serving not only as Selectman, but also as
Representative to the Legislature. Mr and Mrs GLEASON have been the
parents of ten (10) children, namely, CARRIE ELIZABETH, wife of CHESTER
A SMALL of OAKLAND MAINE; BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, who resides in ALTON NEW
HAMPSHIRE; LAURA BELL, wife of ANDREW DOUGLAS LIBBY of OAKLAND MAINE;
LINCOLN LEROY, who reside in OAKLAND MAINE; CHARLESSHERMAN, who is now
a practicing physician in WAREHAM MASSACHUSETTS; HARRY CLATON, a dentist
in BOSTON; CHESTER EUGENE, who lives in PITTSFIELD MASSACHUSETTS; NORA
SUSIE, wife of WILLIAM LEON CORSON, of MADISON MAINE; HOWARD PULSIFER,
of WORCESTER MASSACHUSETTS; and ARTHUR AUGUSTUS of OAKLAND MAINE.
MrGLEASON is a Republican in politics. He belongs to Cascade Grange, P.
of H.and to the local lodge, ILOOF at OAKLAND. A loyal and intelligent
citizen, his vote and influence are always cast on the side of the right
as he sees it, and the bettering of existing conditions, whether local or
general.
I did not find that Benjamin Gleason took an active part in town
politics, at least, not in the lists of town officers. He was a very
hardworking man, and expected his family to work as hard as he. Besides
his farm in Oakland, about 3 miles from the village, he also owned farms
in Sidney where he kept part of his stock and also farmed. In 1897, as
was the custom he had cornhuskings.

"Tinnie", as Laura Bell was called, was an immaculate housekeeper and a
very fine homemaker. She had a birthmark on one side of her face. In our
research of the McIntire family, we found that a child, Mark, born in
1777, the son of Josephand Lucy (Kingsbury) McIntire also had a
birthmark. If, as we believe, we have followed the correct McIntire
line, he would have been a great-great uncle to "Tinnie".

Lincoln Leroy Gleason was born December 13, 1863 in Waterville, the
fourth child, second son. He died in Orlando Florida on October 13,
1946. He was buried in Oakland., Maine.
The following article appeared in the Good Will Record;
"The Manager of Good Will Farm, Mr. Lincoln Gleason, was born in West
Waterville, ME. in 1863. His boyhood was spent on his father's farm,
where he received the educational advantages of the public school usually
accorded to farmer's sons. As he advanced in his studies his father,
anxious for his son's success in life, made it possible for him to attend
the high school in the village, and later he entered the Maine Wesleyan
Seminary at Kent's Hill. After spending several terms there, (from
1884-1887 enrolled in the Scientific Course) he went to New York State
where he finally graduated from the Eastman Business College in
Poughkeepsie.
"Succeeding years were spent in business life, partly in Oakland., Maine,
and partly in Chicago, Ill. It was while he was at his father's house,
intending to return to Chicago, that the invitation came to him to become
the Manager of the Good Will Farm.' The invitation was a surprise to
him, and he entered upon the duties of the position with some
misgivings. He had not contemplated any such work, although he had
enjoyed teaching the few terms that he had devoted to it.
"Having accepted the situation he commenced the duties of the office,
July lst, 1891. He has met the requirements of the position with
increasing efficiency, and with a growing enjoyment of the task. A manof
few words, even temper, gentle disposition, he has many of the
qualifications necessary for real success in this work. One could stay
but a short time at the Farm without discovering that Mr. Gleason enjoys
the respect and affection of all the boys in the Homes. It is a
pleasure to be able to present his portrait in this issue of the Good
Will Record.'
"He was Superintendent of Schools in Oakland from 1902 to 1906. In 1909
he was in Cumberland Mills. He went to live in Northwood Ridge, NH as a
farmer. He moved permanently to Orlanda FL in 1935.
"He was married May 1, 1893 in Oakland to Edith Marston. Their daughter
Hazel, was born March 6., 1896. She died February 12., 1920 at Wareham,
Mass. from valvular disease of the heart, and was buried in Oakland.
Edith Marston Gleason died October 21, 1903. Lincoln then married Myra
Nickerson. She died in Orlando, Florida June 9, 1961, and was buried in
her father's lot in Waterville, Maine."
General Notes: Child - Charles Sherman Gleason
William Gleason's records - bill@vergers.org:
Charles Sherman Gleason was born February 8, 1865. He died in Bath,
Maine August 22, 1927. The following information was taken in part from
"History of Plymouth, Norfolk, and Barnstable Counties., Mass." written
by Elroy S. Thompson, published in 1928. The article begins "Wareham's
excellent status in health and educational matters has in Dr. Charles S.
Gleason a thoroughgoing exponent., a physician who not only has a very
large medical parish in Wareham and its neighborhood, but a public
official who makes a complete study of local affairs and is a valued
factor in the continued success of the Board of Health plans, and in the
maintenance of the high rating of the schools in this section of the
State."
Sherman Gleason attended the local schools in Oakland (then West
Waterville) and was graduated from the Scientific Course in the class of
1888 from Maine Wesleyan Seminary at Kents Hill, Maine. He then attended
Boston University Schoolof Medicine where he was graduated in 1892 with
his medical degree. He wentdirectly to Wareham, where he entered
general practice.
He had affiliationswith several professional Societies, as well as being
an active 32ø Mason, member of Red Men, I.O.O.F., Elks, and Grange. He
attended the CongregationalChurch. He was a member of the Board of
Directors of the Wareham Co-operative Bank.
Even though he was a Republican in his political views, no doubt with
considerable influence within the Town, one of his friends and summer
patients was President Grover Cleveland. He had been a member of the
Wareham Board of Health from 1905 until his death and a member of the
School Board from 1919 when he was first elected.
Following a fire of 1907 which devastated Wareham, Sherman built a house
partly of fieldstone at the corner of High and Sawyer Streets. This was
his residence and also contained his office. It now isused as offices
for Drs. Charles Sherman and Elizabeth Gleason.
His avocation was Real Estate. He bought and sold a number of houses and
cottages in the Wareham area, as well as obtaining a number of parcels of
shore propertiesin Wareham and Maine. One parcel was at West Southport
Island, near Boothbay Harbor, Maine. The farmhouse which set in the
field away from the shore has been moved to the shore and modernized into
a comfortable summer home. The entire area has grown up from a hay field
into an almost dense forest of evergreen trees. (1984)
Sherman was married in October, 1906 to Elmira Delano fromMarion, Mass.,
the daughter of a prominent banker. She died in April, 1909,aged 27,
within two weeks after the birth of their son Malcolm Delano, who was
born April 13. Sherman came home to Oakland for a couple of days and
arranged with his oldest sister, Carrie Small, for her to come to keep
house for him. She went the latter part of the summer with the three
youngest of herchildren, Myron, Jessie, and Helene. Malcolm died in
1913, from eating tainted swordfish.
Sherman married a second time, on February 8, 1919, Eleanor (Zacharias)
McCarthy. (She was born in East Prussia in 1892; died Wareham, Mass.
1964. She was a nurse.) Sherman and Eleanor had one son, Charles
Sherman, Jr., born in Boston,, May 18., 1920. Eleanor catered to summer
guests at East Brewster from 1935 to 1956, on property which had been
given to her as a wedding present by her first husband. He died of
leukemia in 1917. The income from this business made it possible for
their son Sherman, Jr. to attend College and Medical School.
Dr. Charles Sherman Gleason died on August 22, 1927at Bath, Maine. He
and his wife and son had gone by boat to Bath to buy furniture to equip
another cottage at West Southport which he had remodelled for his
family's use. After making their purchases they returned to the dock to
go back to their cottage and Sherman collapsed o
General Notes: Child - Harry Clayton Gleason
William Gleason's records - bill@vergers.org:
Harry Clayton Gleason, fourth boy and sixth child in the family, was
born in Waterville October 28,1866; diedin Boston, Mass March 13, 1932.
He attended the local public schools, was graduated from Maine Wesleyan
seminary at Kents Hill in 1887 from the Commercial College Course,
attended a Business College in Pickups, NY. (Probably Eastman, since his
brother
Lincoln was graduated from there) and was graduated from Boston Dental
College. After completing his education he engaged in dentistry and had
been employed at his profession for over 40 years.
He was unmarried. It is our understanding that he was about to be
married, but a few weeks before the wedding his fiancee was killed when a
sleigh in which she was riding with her parents, overturned.
An amusing clipping appears in Uncle Chester's scrap book. Unfortunately
it is not dated, but it could have been beforeUncle Chester went to
Springfield in 1898. The article discusses the high rate of deaths from
disease following la grippe. An actuary of a large insurance company
stated that direct payments in insurance, loss of time and wages, and
disorganization of trade must have
cost Boston over $1,000,000.00.
However Uncle Chester had the answer; for the article continues:
"Mr. C. E. Gleason, who resides at 68 Clarendon St., and is well
known to all travelers on the Boston and Albany railroad, has some
interesting facts for the public. Ofcourse railroad men had the grippe,
the same as other people and many of theboys haven't got their strength
back yet.
My brother Harry, who has been with the Boston & Albany for some
years, had it severely, and all this spring he has complained of
dyspepsia, headache and a tired, all-gone feeling. Iinduced him to try
a discovery that has wonderful strengthening porters. This is Paine's
Celery Compound, and through its use Harry is himself again. Hetells me
that he feels like a new man "Interviews with leading apothecaries
developed the fact that Paine's Celery Compound is no ordinary medicine.,
but a scientific, common-sense preparation; it is no mere stimulant, but
a food for the nerves and brain, and an unequaled system regulator. It
enjoys a wonderful popularity here in Boston, and is of special value
now, when so manyare feeling depressed and out of health.'
The item indicates that before he became a dentist Harry was employed
with the Boston & Albany Railroad, possibly while he was studying to
become a dentist.
Harry died following surgery for the removal of a brain tumor. He had
lived simply. His avocation was the stock market. He had been quite
successful. His estate at his death was more than $100,000. In his will
he left cash bequests to his nephews, Harold Libby, Chester E. Small,
Myron Small, niece Helene Small Cornwell, and his sister Carrie E.
Small. He placed the greater part of his estate in trusts for his
brother Arthur, to be finally paid to the children of his brother,
Howard; to his brother Lincoln, to be finally paid to the children of his
nephew, Chester E. Small; to his sister Carrie E. Small, to be paid
finally to the children of Helene Small Cornwell. His foresight in
providing for his brothersand sister certainly eased their declining
years. The rest of his estate wasto be divided among all of his sisters
and brothers who were living at the time of his decease.
In a codicil to his will, he made another bequest. It wasto the Maine
Wesleyan Seminary and Women's College at Kents Hill (Readfield)$20,000
to be held until it accumulated to $30,000, after which the income of the
$30,000 was to be lent and loaned "to such deserving and worthy students
of either sex who have no other way of raising the funds for an education
as said Trustees in their discretion shall deem wise and judicious,
preferable to boy students from the farming communities of

Berkshire January 24, 1961; Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of
Berkshire County, Mass. Rollin Hillyer Cooke Volume 2, 1906.
Chester Eugene Gleason, the fifth boy and seventh child inthe family
was born in West Waterville, March 13, 1869; died Brookline, Mass.
January 24, 1961; married Boston October 12, 1897 Clara Belle Randall.
Chester attended the local grammar and high schools and entered Maine
WesleyanSeminary at Kents Hill, in the class of 1887 in the Music
course. He went on to Boston where he found immediate employment with
the Boston and Albany Railroad in the ticket office at Kneeland Street
Station. He was successivelypromoted until he attained Chief Clerkshio
in 1894. He was sent to Pittsfield, Mass. in 1898 as passenger and
ticket agent for the B and A Railroad atUnion Station. In all, he
worked 25 years for the Railroad.
He was a leader in Berkshire County Republican circles getting into
politics soon after he arrived. Three years after he came to Pittsfield
he was elected to the CityCouncil, and in 1903 he was chairman of the
Council's lower chamber. The following year he served in the
Massachusetts House of Representatives. When he was given a State
appointment in 1916, he was a member of the Pittsfield Board of
Assessors, and was also Chairman of the Berkshire County Republican
Committee. Even though he left Pittsfield to perform his duties at the
Capitol he maintained his official voting residence in Pittsfield until
1940 when he moved to Brookline.
In 1916 he was appointed by Governor Samuel McCall tothe Massachusetts
Industrial Accident Board for a term of five years. This agency
administers and enforces the Workmen's Compensation law. He was
re-appointed by Governors Channing Cox and Alvah T. Fuller (Republicans)
and Joseph B. Ely (Democrat). He was not reappointed by Governor James
Gurley whenthe time for reappointment came up in 1936. However, during
World War II on August 27, 1942, he was appointed as military substitute
by Mrs. Emma Tousant, Chairman of the Board, under the authority of
Governor Leverett Saltonstall, to replace Board Member Thomas L. Thistle,
who was in active service in the U. S. Military Forces. In 1949 he was
honored at a testimonial given him by the Massachusetts Association of
Plaintiffs Compensation Attorneys. He was given a scroll for
"outstanding services" to the cause of injured workersfor more than 24
years and for establishing the Gleason lectures on workmen's compensation
to be given annually at one or more law schools.
Chester was a member of several Masonic Branches and of the Railway and
Steamboat Agents Association of Boston.
Chester was married on October 12, 1897 to Clara Belle Randall, who came
originally from Aylesford, Nova Scotia.
She died September 17, 1940 in Boston and is buried in Oakland,, Maine.
There were no children.
Chester was a man of strong likes and dislikes. When he curled his lip,
pointed his finger (the one that had lost the end when he tested the
sharpness of the mowing machine when he was a child) and started in with
"Those birds," you knew he was talking about the Democrats. He was
generous with thosewhom he liked and went out of his way to promote
their welfare. He lived simply. I believe he lived up to the New
Englard motto, "Fix it up; Wear it out; Make it do; or do without.'
In spite of his simple living he was an excellent conversationalist, kept
abreast of world and local affairs, travelled, and could hold his own in
any company. After his wife died in 1940 he wentto live in Brookline
with his wife's niece, Clara Beatrice Welton, who alsocame from
Aylesford, N. S. Beatie, as we all called her, cared for Chester very
patiently until his death on January 24, 1961, the last member of theB.

William Gleason's records - bill@vergers.org:
Howard Pulsifer Gleason, ninth child and sixth son, was born in
Waterville January 29, 1872; died Worcester,Mass. February 2, 1956;
married October 17, 1901 Nellie Willard.
As was true of the other boys in this family, Howard attended the local
grade and high schools and then he attended one year at Coburn Classical
Institute in Waterville. After five years in a hardware store he moved
to Worcester, Mass.in 1893 where he worked for four years at Washburn &
Moen (later known as American Steel & Wire Company). He then went into
business for himself witha milk route, which became a large and
important one. He also was interested in politics (being a Republican)
and served on the Worcester City Council and then as Alderman from 1901
to 1906. In a campaign article in 1902, it was said of him and his
business "Regular and prompt, his attention to his customers accounts for
the enthusiastic way in which the close ward rallied to his support.
Less than a mile from the Millbury line, he may be said to guard the
southern frontier of Worcester. It is told with some pleasure that, at
the recent protracted session for the election of officers, he was
obliged to excuse himself at 3:30 A. M. saying that it was time for him
to go to work." He later owned a livery business, first on Washington
Street, and then on Central Street. The popularity of automobiles ruined
his livery business, so he retired in 1918 to devote his attention to
his garden operations at his home on Greenwood Street.
Like several others of his family he was a 32degree Mason and belonged
to other Masonic Orders. He also belonged to the Quinsigmond Craft Club
and the Dun Workin Club, YMCA.
He was married on October 17, 1901 to Nellie Willard. daughter of Wm. H.
and Hannah B. Willard of Worcester. She had taught school prior to her
marriage. She died in Worcester, Mass. October 8, 1952.
General Notes: Child - Arthur Augustus Gleason
William Gleason's records - bill@vergers.org:
Arthur Augustus Gleason, the youngest of the family, was born at West
Waterville March 1, 1874; died at Vassalboro, Maine March 8, 1956.
Arthur attended Oakland High School in the classof 1890. However he
did not graduate. Among the eight members of that classwere: Walter S.
Wyman, who was active in the Electric Light Company of Waterville
forerunner of the Central Maine Power Company, Fred L. Wheeler, Miss
Louise Benson, Winnie Robinson, Mary Kenney, who became Strickland.
Edith Roy who became the wife of Lester Andrews and Harry B. Watson, who
later (1900) became a teacher of Greek and Latin in a Vermont Academy
also took partin the graduation exercises. He reMained at home farming
with his father andafter the death of his parents the other members of
the family signed the property over to him. The following article
appeared in the Waterville (Maine) Morning Sentinel in 1940:
"One would little dream as he drives down the Belgrade highway out of
Oakland, past one of the glistening white farmhouses with attractive
sunporch with its blossoming plants, that here is a farm whosebusiness
inside and out is run by a man. Arthur Gleason is a bachelor. He was
born sixty-six years age on the farm, one of the family of ten children
of Benjamin and Caroline McIntire Gleason.
"Benjamin Gleason was a prosperousfarmer and his sons and daughters
grew up and became good citizens, one of them a prominent Boston
physician. But Arthur Gleason always reMained at home, being the
youngest of the family, and became so attached to his home, thatsince
the death of his parents, over thirty years ago, he has continued to
carry on the farm and has always been his own housekeeper.
"For a man to livealone is one thing, but to be a housekeeper and
perform every household dutyin exactly the same manner as does the most
proficient housewife, is another. And this is what Arthur Gleason does.
Since the death of his parents, he has remodelled the house, installed a
modern bathroom, electric lights, modernheating, and all the comforts of
an up-to-date home. It is hard, indeed, toimagine that no woman's hand
keeps this home so immaculate, arranges the rooms so tastefully and keeps
the dainty white curtains so fresh at the sunny south windows. It is a
case of "Believe it or not" but a visit to this hospitable man will prove
the statement.
"The Gleason farm of 219 acres runs from Salmon Lake on the west to
Messalonskee Lake on the east and is in the town ofOakland. It has been
in the family nearly a century. In addition to the farm buildings, Mr.
Gleason has cottages on the shores of Messalonskee Lake which are rented,
furnished, to local and New York parties for each summer season.
'*Mr. Gleason has twenty cows, mostly Durhams from which he sells
cream. The milk is fed to calves., which he raises till about the age of
two-year-olds, when he sells them, having sold thirteen of these heifers
from time to time to one man for milch cows.
"Last year he raised four acres of yellow corn, which yielded over five
hundred bushels, which he had ground on the cob for feed. This was
supplemented with 20% ration. He cuts about fifty tons of hay.
"The young hired man, who works for Mr. Gleason, has been with him nine
years, a young man who has no family and who has come to look to Mr.
Gleason with a great deal of affection, and who serves him faithfully and
well.
"Mr. Gleason is a Mason, and a very prominent Granger, well known in
both Kennebecand Somerset county Pomona Granges. Several times in
summer he has been host to both Pomonas at a picnic held at his home and
he is ever a delightful one."
In the early 1920's Arthur entered into a partnership with Merle Cooper
as a hired man with the understanding that the farm would eventually pass
into his hands. When the agreement soured Arthur dee

William Gleason's records - bill@vergers.org:

From William Gleason's (bill@vergers.org) records:
In the Centennial History of Waterville 1902, the following information
appears. War of 1812 Roll of the Field and Staff of Lieut.-Col. Elnathan
Sherwin's Regiment of Militia, being the First Regiment, Second Brigade,
Eighth Division, in service at Augustafor the 14th to the 25th September
1814. This regiment started for the seaboard, as ordered into camp at
Augusta to await orders. On the 24th day of September there was a draft
from the regiment to fill up the regiment of Lieut.-Col Ellis Sweet in
service at Bath. Those of the regiment not drafted were discharged on
the 25th day of September 1814. The roll of Captain William Pullen's
company of militia in Lieut.-Col Elnaathan Sherwin's regiment, raised in
Waterville and in service at Augusta from the 14th to the 25th of
September 1814 included the name of Private Bryant Gleason.
Bryant lived in Canaan, where most of the children were born. He moved
to Bingham in 1845. However, the 1850 Census shows that the farm in
Bingham was occupied by Benjamin and Olive, his sister, and Ichabod Horn,
a hired hand. Bryant and his wife, and Melissa, the eight-year old, were
living with a Merrifield family in Canaan, and Elizabeth was living in a
Gleason family in Waterville (Oakland)."
