General Notes: Husband - Jonathan Shaw
Jonathan had moved to Wakefield with his bros. & family by 1802?at
some point after 1806, he
became a Baptist minister
The Wakefield Baptist Church records reveal a little more about the Shaw family in an entry dated
Saturday, 22 Feb 1806:
The Church ??Had a Conference the 14th Conference Meeting at Jas Yorke?s where the
Greatest Part of the Church Met and most of them Renewed their Covenant and all Enjoyed the
Love of God?John Shaw formerly Deacon of a Congregation Church in Maugerville and
Mary Shaw his wife Put themselves under the care and watch of the church....?
In another entry dated Thursday, 4 October 1808:
?This was the 37 Conference that the Church held? John Shaw and Mary Shaw his wife and
Jonathan Shaw Put themselves under the Care of the Church anew.?
John died July 1814 in Lower Wakefield.
His wife, Mary, died 29 November 1820, also in Lower Wakefield. Theyboth died at the home of
their son, Henry A.
On 9 Oct 1826, the Baptist church received its first land grant in Wakefield. On that date, Charles
Bowyer & his wife deeded a quarter of acre of land "...to Nathaniel Churchhill, Charles McMullen,
Elisha Shaw & Jonathan Shaw, trustees for the denomination of Christians called Free Will
Baptists"
The 1851 census lists an illegitimate grandson as living with the Rev. Jonathan Shaw & his wife that
year. His name was Paren Wats Shaw and he was born in 1849. Who is this person & who are his
parents?
I found a gravestone for Paran W. Shaw (28 Nov 1854-27 Aug 1917) at the Wakefield
Community Cemetery in New Brunswick & he's bur. with his wife, Catherine (9 April 1858-11 Nov
1928). Another source reveals that Paren Shaw & Catherine BURLOCK, both of Brighton, M. 22
Mar 1874 at the residence of her father.
Are these two Paren W. Shaws one in the same? It seems quite likely. Could his tombstone have
the wrong birth year? I think it could have the wrong birth year listed because he was likely an
illegitimate child. This cousin remains clouded in the veil of history.
But back to the children of Jonathan & Abigail (TAPLEY):

Mary were to move to Kingston [Upper Canada?present day Ontario?] & they left for Saint John

RIDEOUT, 5 Aug 1869, by Rev. G.W. Orser & 3rd M. (Rev.) George Whitfield ORSER (27 June
1813-20 March 1885), 20 Aug 1879
Harriet?s first husband, John F. SHAW, was also her first cousin because his father, Ammi, and
Harriet?s father, Jonathan, were brothers. John F. Shaw was about 15-20 years older than his
cousin-wife. I?m not sure but they may have gotten divorced or (morelikely) he may have died
sometime before August 1869, for she got married that month to DanielRideout.
Harriet married the Rev. George Orser in August 1879?after the death of his first wife Abigail in
July 1879 (who was also Harriet?s older sister). According to my calculations, Harriet was about 54
& the Reverend George was about 66 when they married. Their marriagelasted for about five years
before Harriet became a three-time widow in 1885.

Matilda died in February 1884. Her youngest son, Murray, was 14 at the time. Amos, her
widowed husband, remarried about eight months later. They lived in Ashland in 1884.
Amos died in October of 1893 at the age of 66 years--his son Murray was 23. Perhaps it was
after his father?s death in 1893 that he left for the United States. At any rate, Murray probably
came to Maine sometime in the 1880s or 1890s for he married Eliza CHRÉTIEN (Christian) in
January 1896 in Westbrook, Maine.

He and Elizabeth settled on the "falls side" now the town of HamptonFalls. That he was a man of integrity and intelligence is evident fromthe fact that his name appears on a list selected fro New Hampshire towns(when they constituted a royal Province in 1680), by the President andcouncil, as being eligible for the office of councilman when three newones were to be selected, with the privilege of voting as to his choice."Said councilmen being warned to appear at Portsmouth, there to acquaintthemselves with his Majesty's commands in regard to the concerns of theProvince.

The ESSEX ANTIQUARIAN
Edited by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, The Essex Antiquarian
The Essex Antiquarian was published from 1897 to 1909 by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, both noted Essex County Genealogists and Historians. The purpose and accomplishments of the Antiquarian are best described in the words of Perley and Dow, as published in the final edition Vol. 13, No. 4, October 1909:
"The Essex Antiquarian was purposed to fill a want. It was designed to be a leader in scientific historical research; and to present copies or abstracts of records and compilations in an exhaustive and systematic manner, so that as far as the publication extended further investigation along those lines would be needless. Repeated examinations of records tend to their destruction, and thousands of dollars have been spent locally upon the same records for the same purpose by various persons who were ignorant of costly examinations made by others. This purpose, if prosecuted, would preserve the records and make further expenditure of money and labor unnecessary. This has been the particular reason of the appearance of the genealogies in alphabetical order, the gravestone inscriptions, abstracts of the Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files, old Norfolk county records, all wills in the order of their probate, Essex Gazette notes, abstracts of titles to land, etc., as shown in Salem, Haverhill, Ipswich and Marblehead in 1700, and in Georgetown and Topsfield in 1800. During the thirteen years of its existence there have been published in The Essex Antiquarian genealogies of all families from Abbe to Brown; all gravestone inscriptions dated prior to the year 1800 in Amesbury, Andover, Beverly, Boxford, Bradford, Danvers, Essex, Georgetown, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Haverhill and Ipswich; all wills proved in the county prior to June, 1666; the record of the Essex County Revolutionary soldiers and sailors alphabetically to Brown; abstracts of the old Norfolk records to 1675; Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files to 1659; and abstracts of all records in the first ten volumes of the Suffolk county registry of deeds relating to Essex county persons and property, where parties resided or property was located in Essex county, covering the period prior to 1678."
