Research Notes: Husband - William Ward
The first mention of William Ward, and of his being in America, that Ih ave been able to find, was in 1639. In that year, according to therecor ds of Sudbury, the proprietors of that plantation made threedivisions o f their lands; the first in 1639, the second and third, in1640 -- it ap pears of record, that William Ward shared in each of thesedivisions; th en having a second wife and several children. Tradition,transmitted fro m his early descendants, says he came from Yorkshire orDerbyshire in En gland. Investigations have recently been made in Englandto ascertain hi s paternity, but without any satisfactory result. They arestill being m ade for that purpose, and to learn the names of his wivesand births of h is children, who came here with him. Yet, as considerabletime may elaps e before the final result can be obtained, and, whenobtained, may not b e conclusive, it is deemed not advisable to delay thispublication for i nformation from abroad to the disappontment at home, ofmany of his desc endants, who are impatient by reason of their advancedage, to be inform ed of their ancestry, at least in America, before theygo hence.
Information already received renders it improbable that he came fromYor kshire, although it is quite certain that his early ancestors were ofth at place. Seven hundred and ten distinguished persons, each bearing but one name, accompanied William, the Conqueror, from Normandy to theconqu est of England in 1066; a record of all of whose names is yetpreserved. A mong the number was "Ward, one of the noble Captains." Thisis the earli est period in which the name is found in English history, andthe first w hich appears there with an additional name was William de laWard, resid ing in Chester, in 1175.
From 1349, a succession of eleven generations of one family is foundthe re, in each of which, the name of the head of the family was, in thefir st, Ralph; in the second, Richard; in the third, John; in the fourth,Jo hn; in the fifth, Richard; in the sixth, William; in the seventh,Thomas ; in the eighth, Thomas; in the ninth, John; in the tenth, Richard;and i n the eleventh, Thomas, who had sons John and William -- these wereprev ailing names in the early families descended from William of Sudbury,an d are yet retained to a considerable extent in the families of hisdesce ndants to the present time.
The Wards of Yorkshire spread into the adjoining counties of England;th ose of Durham, whence it may be, came William Ward, afterwards ofSudbur y, were descendants of the Yorkshire Wards -- the arms ancientlybelongi ng to the family here, were Azure, a cross baton, or Crest, wolfshead e rased -- and such were those of the Durham Wards.
William Ward was made freeman in 1643; represented Sudbury in the Gener alCourt in 1644, and was several years Chairman of the selectmen, as he w asin 1660, when he removed from that town.
He, with twelve others belonging to Sudbury, petitioned the General Cou rtin 1656 for a new plantation of eight miles square, saying, "Whereas, your petitioners have lived divers years in Sudbury, and God hath beenp leased to increase our children, which are now, divers of them, grown t oman's estate, and wee many of us grown into years so as that wee shoul dbee glad to see them settled before the Lord take us away from hence, a salso God having given us some considerable quantity of cattle, so that wee are so straightened that wee cannot so comfortably subsist as could be desired; and some of us having taken some pains to view the country, wee have found a place which lieth Westward about eight miles fromSudbu ry which wee conceive might bee comfortable for our subsistence,"&c.
Sudbury then contained less than seventy-five families, and embraced in territory what is now Sudbury and Wayland -- one would naturally thinkt hey were "straightened" for neighbors, more than for want of room; ands o they found it, even twenty years later, when the town with anincrease d population was nearly destroyed by the Indians.
Their petition was granted to the extent of "six miles square, orotherw ise, in some convenient form equivalent thereto in the placedesired" -- t he plantation was laid out not six miles square, yet, for an"equivalent t hereto," it was, to say the least of it, a very liberaladmeasurement; e mbracing in territory most of what is now comprised inthe towns of Marl borough, Westborough, Northborough, and Southborough --the names of the t hree last mentioned towns are significant of theirrelative location to t he towns from which they were set off --Westborough, including what is N orthborough, was set off from Marlboroughin 1717 -- Northborough from W estborough in 1766, and Southborough fromMarlborough in 1727. The plant ation was incorporated by the name ofMarlborough in 1660; in that year W illiam Ward removed there fromSudbury, and was chosen deacon of the chu rch when first organized there-- the house lots ranged from fifteen to f ifty acres each, and each wasentitled to a proportionate share in the a fter divisions of the commonlands -- his was a fifty acre lot, situated o n the South side of the roadand nearly opposite the site of the first M eeting house, which was notfar from where the Gates Academy now stands - - he built and resided uponit -- his lands by after divisions extended W estward to what, in some ofhis conveyances, he called "Belcher's Pond," n ear which was erected thepublic house, long and wide known, as the Will iams Tavern, and kept byAbraham Williams, who married the eldest daught er of William Ward, andafterwards by his grand son, Col. Abraham Willia ms, and subsequently bySilas Gates, who married into that family.
William Ward, in common with others, endured great hardships andsustain ed great losses by Indian hostilities; more especially in the timeof Ki ng Phillip's war in 1675-6, when his buildings were fired, hiscattle de stroyed, and one of his sons slain by the enemy.
He died at Marlborough, Aug. 10, 1687; the record there does not stateh is age -- a knowledge of which would greatly facilitate the discovery o fhis parentage by identifying him from some others of the name of Willi am,who, as appears by records from England, were born within a few year s ofeach other -- his age is supposed to have been eighty five or ninet y;probably it was the latter. His Will bears date "the sixth of April, i nthe year of our Lord Christ, one thousand six hundred and eighty-six;" wherein he says, "enjoying through God's merey the entireness of myunde rstanding; but by reason of my great age and the infirmaties thereof,be ing sensible of approaching death, do make this my last will," &c. --ap points his "loving wife, Elizabeth, sole executrix;" gives liberally to her, and requests his "sons, John Ward, Increase Ward, and son-in-law,A braham Williams, to be helpful to his wife, as occasion may require; -- gives "to all my own children, viz. all my sons and daughters, which Ih ave by my former wife, and all that I have surviving by my presentwife. " He also gave legacies to his grand children and to their mothers,chil dren and widows of his "sons, Richard and Eleazer, deceased." He hadfou rteen children; and as he gave to all the children by his former wife,a nd to the surviving by his then wife, it is presumed all of them by the first wife were living at the date of his Will; and that Richard, hisfo urth child, who died in 1666, at the age of thirty-one years, was byhis l ast wife -- hence he must have married a second time, some yearsbefore h e left England.
His widow, when past her seventy-fourth year, made several journies toB oston, as appears by the Probate records there, before she effected ase ttlement of his estate with the exorbitant and tyrannical Andros,Govern or, Judge of Probate, &c. Considering the distance she resided fromBost on, exceeding thirty miles, much of the way a wilderness frequentedby l urking savages, a bridle way her road, and on which one of her sonshad b een a few years before shot down by the enemy at noon day, she musthave b een a person of great fortitude, and possessed of physical powersin an e minent degree. She died at Marlborough, where, some years since,her gra ve stone was standing, on which was an inscription as follows:
"Here lyes the body of Elizabeth Ward, the servant of the Lord --deceas ed in 87 year of her age, Dec. ye 9, in the year of our Lord 1700."

This sheet gives his birth 'abt. 1445, of Sanderstead, Surrey, Eng.,' death 30 July 1525, Sanderstead, buried Sanderstead, wife Mrs. Denes Atwood.
LDS proxy temple ordinances are from the FGRA sheet and that of his parents.
There was a note on the FGRA sheet: 'According to the memorial Brass in the Church at Sanderstead for John and Denes Atwood above, they had 10 sons, therefore there are 4 sons whose names are not known, two of these at least were less than 20 in 1525, it being known there were two minors at the time of John's Will in 1525.' This is not in 'Ye Atte Wode Annals' which says: 'We find nothing of the next John until his death in 1525, leaving a will made just before his death. I hardly think you will find any will in existence that shows so queer a thing, for he had four sons that were named John. However the will of his wife, Denes, made five years later, shows that one John was called Hewson and she names a
Richard not in the other will.' Further on, after mentioning the son Richard it says 'The next two were not yet 20'. No marriages are given for any except #3 John and #6 Agnes.

John, b. in Eng. 1626, m. in Hing. Dec. 4, 1648, Elizabeth, dau. of Nicholas and Mary Jacob. She was b. in Eng. 1632, and surviving him, m. secondly, March 23, 1690-91, Daniel Cushing, Esq., widower. John d. 14 March, 1686-87, æt., as his gravestone says, 61 yrs. Was chosen lieut. in 1664, afts. capt. When serving against the Dutch at N.Y. he 'was preferred for' (promotion?) under orders from Cromwell. In 1680 he was in command of a troop of cavalry. Selectman in 1662, 1670, 1673, 1675, 1680, 1681, 1683, and 1685; representative at the General Court 1666, etc. Resided on North St., where now stands St. Paul's Catholic Church.
