The Vital Records of Salem, Essex County, MA list Isaac, Mary, John,Bartholomew, Sarah and Aaron all being Baptized on May 14, 1727, thechildren of the widow Mary Read. The father is not mentioned. AncestralFile #GN13-8Q shows John Read as the father of these children, though italso shows him as having died in 1765. Another Ancestral File shows himas dying fairly young. My best guess is that the Mary Reed (Read) whomarried Samuel Massey was the daughter of this John Read, son of JacobRead and Elizabeth Green. In fact, Jacob had a son Aaron, John had a sonAaron, and Mary Read Massey named one of her sons Aaron, a name that wasnot at all common at that time.

July 27, 1643; married, Nov. 5, 1666, Hannah Green, born about 1647, dau.

Joseph Richardson dwelt in Woburn; was admitted freeman of the colony,
May 15, 1672, and was therefore a member of the church. He was one of
Major Samuel Appleton's soldiers and was engaged in the fierce assault on
the Narraganset fort, Dec. 19, 1675. In that severe encounter six brave
captains fell, and eighty privates were killed. He was a selectman of
Woburn, 1693, 1694 and 1702.
He died in Woburn, March 5, 1717-18. His will is dated June 24m 1717;
proved April 22, 1718; recorded Midd. Prob. Rec., xv.143. He provides
very carefully and liberally for his "well beloved wife Hannah," and
among other things, that his son "Joseph shall find her a horse, and keep
the same for her use, and a man or himself to ride before her on Sabbath
days, or where she shall have occasion to go, all during her natural
life, if she remains my widow." He also mentions his five children, as
in the sequel. His widow Hannahdied May 20, 1721.

General Notes: Husband - John Vinton
John2 Vinton was an iron worker or "forgeman" and evidently learned the business at the old iron works in Lynn (now Saugus). In 1695 he bought land in Woburn and died there Nov.13,1727 a.77. This was his principal home but he came to Braintree for some years and worked at the Iron Works that was set up at the Monatiquot River in 1681 by John Hubbard of Boston, and two of his children were baptized here.
After his death his widow Hannah resided in Braintree with her son Thomas and died 1741 a.82 according to the Vinton Memorial (1858). As her burial is not recorded by Rev. Samuel Niles she probably resided with son Samuel in the South Precinct.
John Vinton in Jan.1653/4 deposed he was about 38 years old (Records of Supreme Judicial Court Boston #184) and so too old to be son of the following, but may have been closely related "John Vinton of St. Botolph's Bishopgate, chandler, bachelor about 28 with consent of Thomas Vinton his father & Margaret Kinaston of London, maiden, about 22, dau. of - Kinaston dec'd with consent of Alice Kinaston, widow & natural mother of d. Margaret in the parish church of Stepney - Sep.28,1616 - Marriage Licenses of London Diocese.
Two of the children were baptized at Braintree, children of John & Hannah of Malden (his wife of Maulden Church)" (sic).
Acknowledgements are here made for valuable aid as given in the Vinton Memorial published 1858 by John Adams Vinton, a most useful and thorough book.
Mid. Probate 18:442, Will of John2 Vinton of Woburn, Jan.15,1721/2,

General Notes: Child - Thomas Vinton I
He was a blacksmith or bloomer, came to Braintree by 1708 to work in the Iron Works on Monatiquot River, owned by John Hubbard of Boston. He bought land of Nathaniel Hubbard, son of John in 1714 and this became the Vinton homestead. It was located on present Commercial St., East Braintree, just east of the Jonas Perkins School. In 1720 he purchased of Nathaniel Hubbard of Dorchester the iron works too "one and one half acre adjoining unto Monatiquot River, upon part of which the Iron Works now stand", and was bounded North on the river and Iron Works Pond etc., together with the Forge and Iron Works, Sawmill, and all mariner edifices standing and being thereon, and one moiety or half part of the stream, ponds, dams, flumes, near or upon which said Iron Works and Sawmill are erected." The next day Oct.13,1720 he purchased another half acre of Mr. Hubbard to the west of the first purchase, east by Vinton's own land, south by the highway, north by the iron works pond, and west by cart bridge (where Commercial St. now crosses the river). The above purchase did not include the furnace site, only that of the forge. S.P.52-25: Will of Thomas Vinton, Apr.17,1756 - Jan.28,1757. To wife Hannah in lieu of dower, improvement of all land below the way from the stone bridge to the landing place between the way and the river & 1/3 of the improvement of all rest of lands with the west end of the house for life & the improvement of his negro man & all personal estate & household goods for life. To son Thomas in addition to what already all shop tools & half the personal estate at wife's decease & half of his negro man at wife's decease. To son Nathaniel in addition to what already other half of personal estate & half his negro man, also his bible, desk, gun at wife's decease. To four daughters Hannah Thayer, Dorcas Penniman, Rachel Hayden, Ann Burrell in addition to what already all household goods at wife's decease & £3 apiece to be paid by son Thomas. To son Nathaniel all residue & sons Thomas & Nathaniel, executors. Wit: Jonathan Nash, William White & Thomas Allen. Inventory, Personal estate, £163/15/7, including negro man at £30. The dam at the Iron Works caused much controversy in the town as it prevented the fish from ascending Monatiquot River in the spring to spawn in Braintree Great Pond, and for many years an Alewife's committee was elected at the town meeting to try to keep the river open. Finally in 1736 the dam was destroyed over the protests of Mr. Vinton who sued the town, but it was never rebuilt and the iron works ceased to be. After this Thomas Vinton built a blacksmith shop on the north side of present Commercial St.

History of Sanford, Maine 1661-1900
WITHAM, JEREMIAH
These three Withams probably decended from the York family of that name.
More than a century ago, Jeremiah Witham bought 300 acres of land lying east of "Grammar Street" (most of it in the present town of Alfred), and moved his family from Berwick. A part of the land was subsequently owned by Hiram Witham, and was retained in the Witham family until a comparatively few years ago. Jeremiah Witham was a soldier in the French and Indian War, was wounded in one shoulder, and carried the Bullet to his grave. While the army was at Cambridge in 1775, under Putnam, he received a furlough bearing General Putnam's signature, which was cherished for more than a century as a relic by the family. Witham's five children, four daughters and one son, lived to mature age, and died leaving no children. He died May 12, 1806, aged seventy-five years.

Narrative||
The ancestry of Thomas Whittier is in question. He
came to America at the ageof eighteen, accompanied by
John Rolfe who was identified as a kinsman. They came on
the ship Confidence which sailed from
Southampton, England on 24 April 1638. Since John Rolfe
was known to have come from Millchill, part of Wiltshire,
an assumption has been made that the origin of Thomas was
the same (The Granite Monthly, 4:336 [1881]).
Thomas Whittier settled first in Salisbury, later
Newbury and finally in Haverhill, all in Massachusetts. He
was prominent in the affairs of Haverhill (ibid).
There is evidence that in the early days, the name
Whittier was pronounced Whit-tier, the ti
having the soundof ch as in patient. This
original pronunciation surely accounts for the lack of
uniformity among his descendants in spelling the name and
Whittier, Whitcher and Whicher and numerous other variants
(ibid).
This Thomas Whittier is probably the one that came in
the "Confidence" in 1638, identified as a "servant" of
John Rolfe and a "kinsman" of Henry Rolfe. The records
have created confusion as to the spouse of Thomas being
either Ruth Green or Ruth Rolfe. However, the wife is Ruth
Green and Thomas is a nephew of John Rolfe (Families of
Salisbury & Amesbury, pp 358 footnotes, 1023).
One writer explains the Ruth Green confusion in this
manner. The sister of Henry and John Rolfe, as we learn
from their wills, married Thomas Whittier, of Haverhill,
but as the records of that town call his wife'sname Ruth
Green, she must have been either a half sister to Rolfe,
or a widow (Green) when she married Whittier. John Rolfe
in his will expressly names two of Whittier's sons as my
"sisters sons" (NEHGR, 35:Apr 1882:143-144).
Thomas and Ruth (Green) Whittier, parents of
Nathaniel Whittier who married Mary Stevens (Boston
Transcript, 7 Mar 1927, item 5262-7).
Thomas Whittier, son of Richard Whittier and Mary
Rolfe, came to New England in 1638 with his uncle John
Roffe and became the progenitor of the Whittier/Whitcher
lines of America (NEHGR, 66:Jul 1912:250, 256). This
source leaves little doubt as to the ancestry of Thomas
Whittier.
