11/26/2002 BRUNSWICK — Lillian D. Pope, 90, of Brunswick, formerly of East Machias, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Merepoint Nursing Home after a long illness.
She was born in Cutler, Nov. 1, 1912, a daughter of Chester A. and Myrtle Ackley Davis.
She was a graduate of Washington Academy, attended Washington State Normal School and the University of Maine, and taught school for one year in Cutler, leaving to enter a training program in dietetics at the Maine General Hospital School of Nursing.
She married Gardner C. Pope Nov. 28, 1935, in East Machias.
She was a member of the Maude E. Kingsley Literary Club, past matron of Warren Chapter O.E.S., past noble grand of Schoodiwecook Rebekah Lodge, deputy president of District No. 27 of the Rebekah Lodge of Maine, a member of the First Congregational Church, past president and treasurer of the Ladies Union Society, member of Hannah Weston Chapter of D.A.R., the Machias Extension Group, the Byron McPheters Garden Club, and treasurer of the East Machias Historical Society. In Portland, she was a member of the Woodfords Congregational Church, treasurer and president of the K.D. Class, co-president of the Married Couples Club, and member of the Woodfords Club. Moving to Brunswick in 1986, she joined the Fifty Five Plus citizens group and attended the Unitarian Universalist Church.
After moving to Portland with her husband and family in 1952, she worked as a dietician at three of the Portland hospitals, taking time out to serve as director of the Falmouth School Lunch program for 10 years.
She enjoyed playing bridge and dancing with area square and round dance clubs with her husband, which they also enjoyed after retirement when they wintered in Florida.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Carole Ann Pope and Susan Pope Michaud, both of Brunswick; one son, John Alan Pope of East Machias; a sister, Irma Copeland of Cheshire, Conn., and seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Lloyd R. Davis of East Millinocket, and a sister, Lois Thompson of Middletown, Conn.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. at the Brunswick Unitarian Universalist Church, on December 26, with the Rev. Brad Mitchell officiating.

WEST ENFIELD - Hazel Edna (Wheaton) Davis, 88, wife of the late Ralph Davi s, passed away Aug. 10, 2009, at Penobscot Valley Hospital, Lincoln. She w as born May 6, 1921, in Forest Station, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (C ameron) Wheaton. Hazel spent her life sharing her big, warm, generous hea rt with her family and friends, always with a smile and an incredibly lova ble sense of humor that would leave you laughing. Hazel was always there w ith a helping hand for any who needed it. She enjoyed her flower garden s, cooking, watching a Red Sox game on TV, playing Skip-Bo with her daught er, Betty, watching The Guiding Light and, during her more active year s, an occasional shopping trip to Bangor or Lincoln. Hazel was such a b ig part of the lives of those who knew her it would be impossible to li st all that she did and all that she meant - just knowing her was a sour ce of delight and always a pleasure! She was deeply loved and will be grea tly missed by her loving family and friends. She was predeceased by her hu sband of 52 years, Ralph C. Davis; her parents, Thomas and Mary Wheaton; h er siblings and their spouses, Douglas and Eleanor Wheaton, Archie Wheato n, Bliss Wheaton, Freese and Joan Wheaton, Hawley and Doris Thornton, Gle nn and Edith Pressley, and Harry and Mertie Walker; and her son-in-law, St uart Doane.
