Among those taking up land on the west side of the river were Donald McDonald, John McDonald, Donald McPherson, Hugh McNeil, Michael Horahan, of Kilkenny, Ireland, Donald Ban McDonald, Donald McMillan, Allan Cameron and Donald McPhee, Sergeant in the 79th Regiment.
Name on headstone appears to be 'Alen Cameron'. Stone is split straight through the name. Note: He may have come to Canada in 1812. Allan was a member of the Fencibles of Ireland.( he was a sergeant) When he first arrived he lived with his brother Red John then moved to Springfield Antigonish Co. Nova Scotia. Allan was married twice his first wife was Jane McIvor and they had 5 children James, Hugh (both born in Donegal Ireland), Jane (born in Greenock Scotland, Lauchlin, John both born in Antigonish Co. Allan's second wife was Mary Gillis they had 2 boys Doanld and Dougald born in Antigonish Co.
"History of Antigonish" edited by Raymond A. MacLean, Volume 2, page 91.
Note 28 -- Allan Cameron, son of Dougald, was a sergeant in a Fencible regiment on duty in Ireland when the others emigrated. He was married to Jane McIvor, a clergyman's daughter, in Ireland, and had two sons there: James and Hugh. He came to Nova Scotia in 1812 and his sons Lauchlin and John were born there.
His second wife was Mrs. Donald MacDonald (Mary Gillis) by whom he had Donald and Dougald. He settled at Springfield. The old place today (probably about 1943) is occupied by John A., son of Allan, son of James, son of Allan, pioneer. John A's sons are Alex in the US Navy, Hugh, with Canadian Artillery overseas, and Allan, well known piper, on the homestead with his father.
Note 30 -- It is Allan's descendants who live at Springfield (1943). Lauchie, pioneer, son of Dougald Cameron, lived at South Side Harbor, Ewen, son of Dougald Cameron, was the first to become a Catholic. He was married to Margaret Gillis, daughter of Donald Gillis, of Morar, Scotland, on Feb. 21, 1794, by Father Reginald MacDonald. Ewan did not become a Catholic until a short time before they left for Nova Scotia in 1801.
Old Dougald was a Presbyterian, but on his deathbed asked his relatives to send for a priest to assist him to prepare for death. The period was one of fierce bigotry and intolerance on all sides. There was no priest to be found in the neighborhood. A messenger was dispatched to Morar and after three days returned with a priest---Father Uisdean. On his arrival, he found old Cameron surrounded by a crowd of wrathy Camerons, who showed a disposition to "subject his bumps to a phrenological manipulation". However, Father Uisdean never left the room until he had administered the holy sacraments and blessed the dying aspirations of old Dougald Cameron.

MacGILLONIE / MacGUILLONIES: A major sept of Clan Cameron, located in Strone. The surname is apparently derived from the Gaelic Mac Gill an fhaidh, "son of the servant of the prophet." One of the three early Lochaber tribes that banded together and formed the Clan Cameron.

MAEL-ANFHAIDH: The three early Lochaber tribes that banded together and formed the Clan Cameron: the MacMartins of Letterfinlay, the MacGillonies (Mac ghille-anfhaidh), and the MacSorlies of Glenevis (Sliochd Shoirle Ruaidh). Occupied lands east of the Lochy basin.

STRONLEA: Upon the Estates of Lochiel, circa 1788.
Sine Cameron was also known as Jean Cameron as listed in several records in IGI.2 Sine Cameron was also known as Jane Cameron in the Anglicized version.3 She married Dougald Cameron, son of Ewen Cameron, circa 1770.4 Sine Cameron was widowed by the death of Dougald Cameron say 1784; based on birth of Rev Mr Ewan CAMERON in 1785 to his wife Sine and Dougald CAMERON. Kilmallie is the old name given to land north of Loch Eil and west of the river Lochy. Today the name is preserved by the local Parish Church. There are three Church buildings; a two-hundred year old building in Corpach, a more modern one in Caol and a lovely Chapel hidden in the forest of Achnacarry. DOF says that Dougald and Sine lived in Sron-a-Li, Lochaber, in the Fort William area. According to LDS records, Dougald and Sine's sons were born in Strone Lea, Kilmallie . Kilmallie is only about 4 miles from Fort William on the A830.
Dougald Cameron died say 1784; based on birth of Rev Mr Ewan CAMERON in 1785 to his wife Sine and Dougald CAMERON.
Douglad was born between 1784/1787. Dougald married Sine Cameron from Stronlea, she was the daughter of Fear of Stronlea. Sine remarried to another Cameron Lauchlin. She had two more children. Ewen and Jean. Ewen immigrated to Canada and was a Presbyterian minister. Sine therefore was a mother to a Presbyterian Minister and a grandmother to a Catholic Bishop. John Cameron. Ewen married Ellen and lived in Port Stanley Ontario to the ripe old age of 103.
Dougald Cameron was born at Sron-a-Li, Lochaber, Scotland. He was the son of Ewen Cameron. Dougald Cameron married Sine Cameron circa 1770. Dougald Cameron died say 1784; based on birth of Rev Mr Ewan CAMERON in 1785 to his wife Sine and Dougald CAMERON.
History of Antigonish Vol. 1 Page 88.- The progenitor of the South River Camerons was Dougald Cameron, son of Ewen, son of Lauchlin. Their original home was Suinart. They were of the "MacGill'onaidh" or Gillony branch of the Camerons. Although the family belonged originally to Suinart, Dougald Cameron lived in "Achadh an Toghair", or Achintore, near Fort William, Invernesshire, N. Britain. He was married to Jane Cameron, daughter of "Fear Stonhlea", (sic) with issue Ewen, John, Lauchy, and Ann(28). The family was Presbyterian for generations.
Drummer on Foot Page 46 - " Dougald and Sine (Jane) had a family of four sons, - Hugh, Allan, Lachy and John, and several daughters who will be referred to later. The most of them came to this country."

Margaret Gillis and Hugh Cameron immigrated in 1801; from possibly Ceann Loch Morar (where Margaret GILLIS was from) to Pictou, Nova Scotia. DOF says this was on the 'Hector'; evidence seems to suggest maybe the 'Dove' (see http://www.rootsweb.com/~nspictou/dove.html) or the 'Sarah' (see http://www.rootsweb.com/~nspictou/sarah.html).
Note: Ewan immigrated to Canada with his wife Margaret on the Nora in 1801.Their daughter Mary died on board the ship from smallpox she was 3 yrs oid and is buried in Caribou, Nova Scotia. Ewan and Margaret were married on Feb 21, 1794 in Ceann Loch Morar, Scotland. Margaret died 3 Feb 1873 in Southwest Margaree and is buried in the South River Cemetery. I visited the grave but couldn't make out the bottom.

Hugh Cameron was also known as Ewen Cameron. He was born in 1771 at Achintore, Scotland; Based on his parents' marriage 'somewhere about the year 1770' and the fact that he was the oldest. He was the son of Dougald Cameron and Sine Cameron. Hugh Cameron married Margaret Gillis, daughter of Donald Gillis and (?) McGillivray, on 21 February 1791. XXX The St. Andrews District - The South River
The Camerons Came out from Scotland a few years before the McIsaacs, but the latter preceded the former by a few years at the South River. The Camerons stayed for near a year at the Gulf with their friends and relatives. Ewen Cameron and his wife stayed with Andrew McGillivray, of Dunmaglass, who was her maternal uncle (23). They then removed to the harbor of Antigonish and stayed for some time with Launchy McDonald, whose daughter John Cameron married. Dugald Cameron, Esq., still living at the South River(24), was born at the harbor on August 30, 1801. Shortly after that date they all removed to the Middle South River.

Note: Ewan immigrated to Canada with his wife Margaret on the Nora in 1801.Their daughter Mary died on board the ship from smallpox she was 3 yrs oid and is buried in Caribou, Nova Scotia.

John Cameron
CAMERON, John, Canadian R. C. bishop, born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, in February, 1827. He received his preparatory education at home, and, when sixteen years of age. went to Rome, where he spent ten years fitting himself for the priesthood. In 1853 he was ordained a priest, and at the same time received his degree as doctor of philosophy, and also of divinity. The year following, he returned to Nova Scotia, and was placed in charge of St. Francois Xavier College at Arichat, and, after the removal of this seminary to Antigonish, he acted as its president and professor of divinity for three years. He returned to Arichat in 1863, and took charge of a large parish, discharging at the same time the duties of vicar-general. In 1870 he was appointed titular bishop of Titopolis, and coadjutor to the bishop of Arichat, and was consecrated at Rome by Cardinal Cullen. After attending the sittings of the ecumenical council, he returned to his diocese in the autumn of the same year. Bishop MaeKinnon becoming infirm through age, in 1877 Dr. Cameron, his coadjutor, was constituted administrator of the diocese of Arichat, becoming bishop shortly afterward, when Bishop MaeKinnon resigned. Immediately after his appointment he removed to Antigonish, and entered with such zeal and energy upon the work before him that he never paused until he freed his diocese of the heavy debt with which it was encumbered when he entered upon his duties as bishop. He is an eloquent preacher and a thorough scholar.

DUNMORE, Antigonish County
A locality south east of Antigonish. Named after the strong stone fort on the hill of Dunmore, Perthshire, Scotland. Called Big Brook and Middle South River. Among the first settlers were John McDonald (Borra dale) and five MacIsaac's - Duncan, Angus, John, Archibald and Hugh, who had emigrated from Moidart, Scotland, on the ship Nora in 1801. In the next few years came Hugh Boyd, the Camerons, John McDonald, Alexander McLean, Archibald McLellan and others.
The first school in the St. Andrew's district was the one at the crossroads where John MacDonald (Red) carried on a merchandizing business. In 1957 Dunmore became part of St. Andrew's Consolidated School District.
About 1860 a new schoolhouse was built on the hill above the bridge on the east side of the river. The first teacher to open school in it was "Big" Andrew MacGillivray who was to teach school at various parts of the county for over forty years.

Sine Cameron was also known as Jean Cameron as listed in several records in IGI. Sine Cameron was also known as Jane Cameron in the Anglicized version. She married Dougald Cameron, son of Ewen Cameron, circa 1770. Sine Cameron was widowed by the death of Dougald Cameron say 1784; based on birth of Rev Mr Ewan CAMERON in 1785 to his wife Sine and Dougald CAMERON.
Sine was the daughter of Fear of Stronlea. She had a brother John More and a sister Sarah Cameron who married Archibald Cameron. They had one son that I could find Allan of Stronlea ( Allan the son of Sarah and Archibald). Sine remarried Lauchlin Cameron and had two more Children ( see Dougald's notes)
General Notes: Child - Reverend Mister Ewen Cameron
Came to Canada and lived at Port Stanley, Ontario, where he died. He was a Presbyterian preacher in Canada.
http://makowiec.org/cameron/p9.htm#i1041
Ewan Cameron was also known as Reverend Mister Ewan Cameron. Ewan Cameron was also known as Hugh Cameron. He was born on 18 January 1786 at Strone Lea, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland; Date derived from DoD (1888) and age (103).2,3 He was the son of Lochlan Cameron and Sine Cameron. Ewan Cameron was Presbyterian Minister
See AA Johnston, "A History of the Catholic Church in Eastern Nova Scotia", vol II, pp 495-6
Johnston seems to prefer 'Ewan' for the spelling of the Rev'd Mr. Cameron's name.2 He died in 1888 at Port Stanley, Elgin, Ontario, Canada.
