General Notes: Husband - Mathew Cushing
Matthew Cushing (1588-1660), born in 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada, son of Peter Cushing of Norfolk, whose grandfather had possessed large estates in Lombard street, London, married 5 August 1613 Nazareth Pitcher, daughter of Henry Pitcher, of the famous family of Admiral Pitcher of England. For the first fifty years of his life he lived in Hardingham and Hingham, Norfolk County, England, and had, as by register of old Hingham: Daniel, baptized 20 April 1619; Jeremiah, 1 January 1621; Matthew, 5 April 1623; Deborah, 17 February 1625; and John, whose baptism is, I believe, omitted and I have heard, that it was in a neighboring parish. With his wife and five children, and his wife's sister (Widow Francis Riecroft, who died a few weeks after their arrival), he embarked in the ship -Diligent- of Ipswich, 350 tons, John Martin, master, which sailed from Gravesend, 26 April 1638, with 133 passengers, among whom was Robert Peck, M.A., Rector of the parish of Hingham, England. The immediate occasion of their departure seems to have been trouble in ecclesiastical matters. Their rector, doubtless with the sympathy and aid of most of those constituting the emigrating party, had pulled down the rails of chancel and altar, and leveled the latter a foot below the church, as it remains to this day. Being prosecuted by Bishop Wren, he left the Kingdom, together with his friends - who sold their estates at half their real value. The party, having landed at Boston Massachusetts, 10 August 1638, immediately proceeded to their destination, Hingham Massachusetts, so named after the name of the former home of the Cushing family in England. At a town meeting held in 1638, a house lot of five acres, first below Pear Tree Hill, on Bachelor (Main) St., was given to Matthew Cushing, and it continued in the possession of the family until 1887. He was early engaged in the public affairs of the town, became a deacon in Reverend Hobart's church, and was the progenitor of many eminent descendants. It is now a pretty well established fact that, with the exception of a few families who have come to this country during the past century, all the persons bearing the surname of Cushing in the United States and Canada are his direct lineal descendants. His will, which was a verbal one, was written after his decease by his children, who, under date of 15 November 1660, pray that Daniel Cushing, Esq., their oldest brother, may be appointed administrator of their father's estate. In his will all the children except Deborah, who married May 1648, Matthew Briggs, are named as living; and the share to this son-in-law was large. His widow died 1681, aged 95.

PLANTERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH by C.E. Banks, Boston, 1930
Upon the lot now occupied by Dr. Robbins at the foot of Pear-tree Hill, a few rods north of his residence, Matthew Cushing, who died in 1660 at seventy-one years of age, the progenitor, probably, of all the families of that name in the United States, had established the home which remained uninterruptedly in the family until 1887; and here still lived his wife, who died subsequently to the war, aged ninety-six, his son Daniel, then and until his death town clerk, and one of the wealthy men of the period, and Matthew a grandson, afterwards lieutenant and captain. Not far away Matthew Cushing senior's daughter Deborah lived with her husband, Matthias Briggs, while on the opposite side of the street, at what is now the Keeshan place, Daniel the younger, a weaver by trade, established a home and reared a large family. The Cushings were shopkeepers in addition to their other occupations, and probably the little end shop built onto the dwelling on either side of the street contained articles of sale and barter,--produce and pelts and West India goods and ammunition. We may suppose that these small centres of trade, together with the tannery in the immediate vicinity, gave quite a little air of business to the neighborhood,--forming indeed the primitive exchange of the period.

General Notes: Child - Jeremiah Cushing
Jeremiah Cushing, Captain (1621 - 1665) became a mariner and commanded a ship trading between Boston and London. He resided in Boston and was lost at sea. By the will of his elder brother Daniel, the Hingham patriarch, it appears, that the estate of Jeremiah had descended in part to that testament. Perhaps the remainder was accorded to his wife, Elizabeth, the widow of John Wilkie and his daughter Elizabeth. His wife, in her will, makes mention of her daughter, Elizabeth Condy, and grandson, Jeremiah Condy, and sister, Martha Muzer in Redrif, near London.

General Notes: Child - John Cushing
John Cushing, Hon. Colonel (1627 - 1708), aged eleven in 1638, came with his parents Matthew and Nazareth and four siblings to New England. John returned to England briefly in 1657-1658, visiting his uncle Peter Cushing in London, and buying clothes, a bed tick and a pair of steel yards there, as well as travelling to Norwich and Hingham in Norfolk, where he visited other relatives .... This trip may represent the beginnings of John Cushing's long career as a merchant, town official and justice of the peace.
Also in 1657 he, together with Matthias Briggs, purchased for 120 pounds the Varsall Estate in Scituate of Capt. John Vassall, son of William Vassall, to whom it was laid out 1634, which consisted of 120 acres with house and barns. He did not move there, however, until about 1662. The land on which the farm was situated was always known as (Bell House Neck), a name given to the place in consequence of a bell that hung at the house there, for a century, to give an alarm to the neighboring country in case of the approach of Indians. In 1663 he was surveyor of highways and in 1667, receiver of excises. He was deputy to the colony in 1674, and was often reelected. In 1673, he was on the committee for dividing Scituate lands; and in 1676, was chosen to report to the Government a statement of all services of the soldiers of Scituate in the war with King Philip. Selectman from 1674 to 1686 inclusive, and County Magistrate (Plymouth Co.) 1685 to 1692. Assistant of the Old Colony Government of Plymouth Colony 1689 to 1691, and representative to the General Court at Boston in 1692 (the first year after the two colonies, Plymouth and Massachusetts, were united), and for several succeeding years to 1697, Member of the Council 1706 and 1707. He was also Colonel of the Plymouth Regiment.
Occupation: Farmer, exporter, ship owner,
1692 First Representative from Scituate, Mass.

Peter Cushing (1562 - 1615) the son of Thomas Cushing was born at Hardingham but removed to Hingham about 1600, in which year the parish register of Hingham begins. He married Susan Hawes at Hardingham, 2 June 1583. He was buried at Hingham, Eng., 2 March 1615. His wife was buried 26 April 1641. He was probably one of the first of the Cushings to embrace the Protestant faith, for the wills of his father and eldest brother are not in the Protestant form.

General Notes: Child - Theophilus Cushing
Theophilus Cushing (1584 - 1679) came to New England in 1633, on the ship Griffin, in company with Governor Haynes and the eminent Puritan divines, Cotton and Hooker. For a time he resided on Hayne's farm with his friend (Afterwards the celebrated Governor Haynes) as his adviser and secretary. When his younger brother Matthew, following his example, came to New England, Theophilus, who appears never to have married, settled with him in Hingham, Massachusetts. He was blind for 25 years before his death, which occurred 24 March 1679. He was said to have lived to the age of 100 years.

General Notes: Child - Mathew Cushing

In 1679 Peter's father Daniel, built for Peter the house near theCohasset line, in that part of Hingham known as Rocky Nook, which hasbeen occupied by five generations of Peter's descendants. When the housewas built there was no road going by it, the only way leading to it wasTurkey Hill Lane, a path leading from the "Plain" to Cohasset.[1]
Peter and Hannah "resided on East St., Hingham. He was constable 1688,and selectman 1689 and 1702. There is an old house on East St., still[1905] owned by the descendants of Peter Cushing which was built in 1670;it is shaded by a fine old elm tree, transplanted in 1729. This part ofEast St. is often called 'Rocky Nook.'"

Seth Cushing (1705 - 1761) kept an inn in the dwelling owned in 1877 and occupied by heirs of William O. Lincoln, on North, near Lincoln St., but removed from here, as tradition says, to Stoughton, Mass. An ancient deed, dated 26 February 1753, is a conveyance from Seth Cushing, inn-holder, in consideration of 196 pounds, current money of New England, to Jedidiah Lincoln, his dwelling-house and other property; which is supposed to be about the time of his removal.
There are also records that indicate that Seth Cushing died in Plympton, Massachusetts in 1789.

Theophilus Cushing (1703 - 1779) was a farmer, mill owner and Constable. His will was proved 25 June 1779. He resided on the paternal homestead, Main Street, South Hingham. He was a Selectman. "Theophilus had taken over their cousin John Jacob's sawmill and fulling-mill and added a grist mill at what would be Cushing's Pond, connected beneath Main Street to Fulling Mill Pond by an "amazing underground aqueduct."

General Notes: Child - Adam Cushing Hon. Major
Adam Cushing Hon. Major (1693 - 1752) graduated from Harvard College in 1714.
The captain was a farmer by occupation and represented the town in the General Court. At the college Adam was constantly busy with small offenses, culminating in senior year when he and his classmate Coffin (q.v.) were degraded for "Scandalous Excesses in their Chambers on the Lord's Day night."In spite of this he took both degrees in course, for the second arguing that the sun is fire. Beginning in 1717, Cushing kept the Hingham school for three years. On September 25, 1718, he married Hannah, daughter of Thomas Greenwood (A.B. 1695) of Rehoboth. He was chosen a selectman of Hingham in 1720 but five years later was a candidate for the Portsmouth pulpit. About 1726 he removed to Weymouth, where he bought a large estate and at once became a leading citizen. He held most of the town offices and went before the General Court to petition for the incorporation of a new county to be composed of towns surrounding Weymouth. In 1735 he as elected to the House of Representatives, where he was one of the 'monitors' whose duty it was to see that the orders of the House were put into execution. The greater part of his legislative services were in connection with land grants to veterans and their descendants. He was himself a leading proprietor of New Hingham (now Chesterfield) and frequently called the meetings of the proprietors at his house in Weymouth.
Cushing was a captain of militia as early as 1735. His only active military service came six years later when a group of Spanish prisoners escaped from confinement in Boston and created a panic among the villages around the Bay. The Governor and Council ordered Captain Cushing out to search for the Spaniards "in Boston Bay, and in the creeks near Hingham and Weymouth." The Captain had become a Major by 1743, probably in connection with an independent company formed in Weymouth for service at Castle William.
In 1746, the Major was appointed a Justice of the Peace, and therefore he paid little attention to the General Court, giving up his seat in 1749. His one great public service had no connection with these offices. It happened that the alewives, or herring, did not run up Back River, so that the people of Weymouth were without what was to the inhabitants of other towns an important source of food. It occurred to Cushing to transport spawning herring from Taunton River to Great Pond, whence the fry went down Back River to the sea. They returned the next year and every year thereafter.
Major Cushing died of the throat distemper on January 21, 1752, leaving an estate that inventoried only 615 pounds, although it included two slaves. In his will he provided that the children must each deliver to their mother annually, "two cords of Merchantable Wood, two bushells of good Indian Corn, one bushell of good rye and one barrell of cyder." She died in 1765. - SIBLEY'S HARVARD GRADUATES
In 1720 he was one of the Selectman of Hingham. In 1726 he bought an estate at the corner of Commercial and Essex Street, Weymouth, Massachusetts. He held a Captian's commission in the militia.
Almost immediately upon his settlement in Weymouth, from his force of character, education and reputation, he sprang into prominence and became the leading spirit in all town and parish affairs. He was almost continuously the Deputy to the General Court from 1735 to 1748, and held as regularly the most important town offices. Among his other offices he was one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace.
On the night of September 30, 1741, a number of the Spanish prisoners escaped from Boston with a large sail-boat. As they were armed, great fear was felt for the safety of the New England coasting vessels, and Capt. Adam Cushing, formerly one of Hingham's Selectmen, and now an able officer, was ordered in pursuit, with special instructions to search the creeks of Hingham and Weymouth. There remains no account of his success or otherwise.
Adam's will, made at Weymouth Massachusetts, was proved in 1752.
