I looked Grampa Fred Harvie's record for WW1. Here is the story about his birthday. He thought it was May 10, 1895. When he retired they said May 11 1894, so we know it is May 10 or 11. I believe Grampa lied or the army messed up. Both make up stories.

Frank Cushing, of Bangor, Meets Death at Sault St Marie, Ont on Tuesday:
A dispatch from F.H. Clergue, Esq to his father J.K. Clergue, Esq of this city announces the death of Mr Frank Cushing of this city at the mill at Sault Ste Marie, Ont where he was employed. The dispatch states that he was instantly killed on Tuesday by a shaft in the mill and Mr J.K. Clergue was requested to inform the children here of the sad event.
Mr Cushing had been connected with the building of of the big mills out there and Mr Clergue regarded him as a valued employee.
He was well known in this section having been connected with many building operations and having worked in various mills. His age was 51 years. The remains will arrive in Bangor this noon and the funeral will be held on Saturday at 9 o'clock from 227 Pine street, at St John's Catholic church. His son Frank will accompany the remains here.
Mr Cushing's wife died some years ago and he is survived by six children: Miss Annie A. and Miss Josie of this city; Frank and Henry who are employed in the mill at Sault Ste Marie; Misses Ora and Marie who are in Oldtown. Mr Cushing was held in high regard by all who knew him and his death will be regretted. - Bangor Daily Whig and Courier, Friday June 10, 1898.

For Peter Mutty and Mary A. Mutty, see the 1870 Census for Veazie ME. Look under Alexander Mutty. Peter T. is one of his sons. I think my Mary is one of his daughters, but haven't sent for her birth certificate yet.
When Annie Amelia Cushing was christened, her sponsors were Peter Mutty and Amelia Cushing. (Could this Amelia be the mother or a sister of Frank?)
I have seen info on a Peter T. Mutty's wife-- St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Port Townsend, Jefferson Co., WA (in GenWeb Archives) shows #265 Louis Peter Mutty, #256 Pauline Mutty, wife of Peter Mutty and #257 Peter T. The Goodwin/Mutty/Thibodeau/Lambert info on Ancestry World Tree Project is a good place, and also World Tree Project: Surnames of Ohio & New England, including Bennett, Leonhart, Biancuzzo, Beaulieu . . . if you are interested in this family. Peter is in both of these. Edouard Alexandre Stanislas Thibaudeau somehow morphed into Alexander Mutty by the time of the 1870 census.
The info I've collected so far is contradictory and I haven't really figured Peter out, since I'm mainly trying to find Mary's parentage. If I'm right, Peter is Mary's brother, but I'm not sure yet.

First of all her christening name was Elenora, and her parents were listed as Frank Cushing and Mary Muty. For her siblings, Mary's name was listed variously as Marie Mutty (Thibadeau his wife), Mary Ann Muttie, and of course Mutty.
US Social Security has sent me a copy of her application for an account number dated April 30, 1937. She listed her father as Frank C. Cushing and her mother as Mary A. Cushing.
She was raised by Louis J. Mutty, who had no children. He was at King Tut's tomb at the opening.
In the 1920 Census she is listed as living in Fairfield Twp., Tippacanoe Co., Indiana with Clarence O. Flowers, Clare Flowers, and Ruth Flowers. The names, dates and birthplaces all match what I know from my family.
In the 1930 Census she is listed, with her family, as living on Wayne Ave. in Philadelphia PA. I grew up in that area and know it well. This listing includes Clarence O. Flowers, Leora C. Flowers, Clare C. Flowers, Ruth E. Flowers. Their ages and occupations are consistent with what I know and things that my mother told me about. Also, my father lived not far away.
I also have found some other information you may be interested in. I telephoned the Central Maine School of Nursing, Livingston ME, which mother told me was where Nana went to nursing school, and they have her listed as graduating in 1909.They also had a new name listed with her info. Directly below her graduation listing is "(Flower s)"-whom she married in 1910, Directly below that is listed "Buker."
I also have found an address for both her and a Miss Gertrude Mutty listed in the Lewis ton, Androscoggin County Maine Directory, 1908; it is "296 Main, rms.do. " Their occupation is listed as "nurse."
My grandmother's maiden name is Mutty. Her mother is Mary/Marie Mutty and her father is Frank Cushing according to baptism records from St. Joseph's Church in Bangor ME.

I met Uncle Henry--we talked at length at a large family gathering. I was a kid and was fascinated by him. He had a mink farm, and told me all about how he raised and cared for them. The farm, I think, was "up North". The other names she and Nana talked about, especially "Josie". Nana and family also appear in the 1920 an 1930 census, even living in my old neighborhood in the 30s

Mary A. Mutty "died young," around the time Marie was born.
Marie Cushing was her youngest child and later became a nun in Michigan.
Youngest daughter Marie--haven't found a thing. My speculation is that the mother died not too long after her birth. In one of my mother's lists, she says "Marie was a nun in Michigan or someplace," another list says "Marie--convent." Maybe it's the same convent as the one where daughters of John T. Mutty and Mary Selena Boulette-- Mary Josephine and Mary Carolilne-- lived ( St. Joseph's Convent in Old Town ME.), or maybe the convent connected with St. Theresa's Church in Bangor.
Penobscot County Probate has an adult guardian Nov 1880 for a Mary M. Cushing of Bangor. Penobscot City Probate v.43:220. Perhaps there is more detail in the Probate record which is in V.43:220.

General Notes: Child - Priscilla Willa Cushing
PRINCETON - Priscilla Cushing Andrews, 94, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011. Priscilla was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Crawford, daughter of the late George and Nolia (Fenlason) Cushing. After attending school in Crawford, she married Brewer Andrews. They owned and operated Early Morning Farm for many years. Priscilla was a member of Woodland Baptist Church, where she cleaned and taught Sunday school, as well as Gideon's International Auxiliary. She enjoyed scrapbooking, quilting and flowers. In addition to her parents, Priscilla was predeceased by her husband, Brewer; sister, Florence Libby; and her brother, Bill Cushing. Surviving are her two children, Beverly Andrews of Calais and Larry Andrews and his wife, Jane, of Princeton; five grandchildren, Kevin McPhee and his wife, Kathy, of Stillwater, Devon Andrews and his wife, Kelly, of Redmond, Ore., Duane Andrews and his wife, Jody, of Baileyville, Wayne Potter and his wife, Katy, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Adam Potter and his wife, Lisa, of Windham; 13 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and a niece, Kay Church of Calais. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Priscilla's life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Woodland Baptist Church, Baileyville. Burial will be after at South Princeton Cemetery. George Russell Cushing Hon. Captain (1768 - 1851) removed to Ashburnham in 1800. In early life he was a seafaring man and commanded several vessels in the European and West Indian trade. At the time of the French Revolution he was obliged to remain in France on account of the embargo laid upon his vessel. He visited all the noted seaports of the world, and amassed something of a fortune. He had a miniature of himself painted in London, England, with the Cushing Coat of Arms upon its back, which is now in the possession of his immediate descendants. He was a Justice of the Peace of Ashburnham for a number of years.
George was the owner of ship "Phoenix" in 1789.
Military: George's appointment to the Captaincy in the 4th regiment of infantry, 2nd brigade, 7th division of militia took place in 1807. He was honorably discharged in 1811. Miss Dorothy P. Cushing of 44 W. Emerson Street, Melrose, Massachusetts. has his appointment and discharge papers.

Princeton and Springfield - Helen K. Cushing, 88, died April 23, 1982 at a Lincoln hospital. She was born in Grand Lake Stream, March 3, 1894, the daughter of Ira and Sophrona (Yates) Smith. She is survived by one son, Royce Kneeland of Woodland; two stepsons, Louis Kneeland of South Princeton and Norris Kneeland of Woodland; three daughters, Mrs. Ward (vera) McCann and Mrs. William (Aurelia) Gould, both of Princeton and Mrs. Ada Butler of Springfield; one brother, George Smith of Lincoln; seven grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Scott Wilson Funeral Home, Calais with the Rev.Verna Lowell officiating. Interment at Princeton Cemetery.

Henry Cushing lived in Bangor ME and had a mink ranch. Possible daughters listed with him were Madeline (Wilmington DE) and Laurel.
I met Uncle Henry--we talked at length at a large family gathering. I was a kid and was fascinated by him. He had a mink farm, and told me all about how he raised and cared for them. The farm, I think, was "up North". The other names she and Nana talked about, especially "Josie". Nana and family also appear in the 1920 an 1930 census, even living in my old neighborhood in the 30s

General Notes: Husband - Ira Washington Cushing
Ira Washington Cushing (1862 - 1927) owned two hotels and during Prohibition and had his share of booze for his customers. They had a rat at the police station and before every raid on the hotel, they would get warning and row the booze up river in a boat and the police found nothing, the police would leave and the boat would come back. The hotel burned just as the road replaced the railroad and it burned at a very convenient time for Ira.
Ira had a house in North Anson right beside North Anson Reel and he had a farm in Starks. Starks taxed cattle in one month and North Anson taxed cattle in another month. Ira would move his cattle around so North Anson sued him. Family folklore said the town brought him to court and he won.

The hotel burned just as the road replaced the railroad and it burned at a very convenient time for Ira.
Ira had a house in North Anson right beside North Anson Reel and he had a farm in Starks. Starks taxed cattle in one month and North Anson taxed cattle in another month. Ira would move his cattle around so North Anson sued him. Family folklore said the town brought him to court and he won.

Jeremiah preached at Haverhill, then ordained at Scituate 27 May 1691.H.C. 1676.
Jeremiah "received his degree at Harvard College in 1676. He was educatedfor the ministry under the direction of Mr. Norton of Hingham. He was notimmediately in the ministry. He received an invitation to become thepastor of Haverhill in 1682, which he declined. He began to preach inScituate in February 1691, and was ordained there on the 27th of May the
same year. His salary was £60. Besides this, the Conihassett partnersmade him a gift of twenty acres of land. It was laid out in 1694,adjoining the lands of John Curtis and Henry Merritt. He purchased JohnCurtis's house in 1698, and probably resided in it, and rented theparsonage. It stood between Timothy White's and the harbour.
"The term of Mr Cushing's ministry was short, he having deceased March22, 1705, in the fifty-first year of his age and the fourteenth of hisministry. There is a monument ot his memory in the old burying groundnear the harbour. He suffered a lingering illness, having been obliged tosuspend his labours for several months."
Jeremiah was also a minister at Provincetown, for several years before1700, but probably only preached to the transient population in thefishing season.

Jeremiah Cushing, Captain (1621 - 1665) became a mariner and commanded a ship trading between Boston and London. He resided in Boston and was lost at sea. By the will of his elder brother Daniel, the Hingham patriarch, it appears, that the estate of Jeremiah had descended in part to that testament. Perhaps the remainder was accorded to his wife, Elizabeth, the widow of John Wilkie and his daughter Elizabeth. His wife, in her will, makes mention of her daughter, Elizabeth Condy, and grandson, Jeremiah Condy, and sister, Martha Muzer in Redrif, near London.

John returned to England briefly in 1657-1658, visiting his uncle Peter Cushing in London, and buying clothes, a bed tick and a pair of steel yards there, as well as travelling to Norwich and Hingham in Norfolk, where he visited other relatives .... This trip may represent the beginnings of John Cushing's long career as a merchant, town official and justice of the peace.
Also in 1657 he, together with Matthias Briggs, purchased for 120 pounds the Varsall Estate in Scituate of Capt. John Vassall, son of William Vassall, to whom it was laid out 1634, which consisted of 120 acres with house and barns. He did not move there, however, until about 1662. The land on which the farm was situated was always known as (Bell House Neck), a name given to the place in consequence of a bell that hung at the house there, for a century, to give an alarm to the neighboring country in case of the approach of Indians. In 1663 he was surveyor of highways and in 1667, receiver of excises. He was deputy to the colony in 1674, and was often reelected. In 1673, he was on the committee for dividing Scituate lands; and in 1676, was chosen to report to the Government a statement of all services of the soldiers of Scituate in the war with King Philip. Selectman from 1674 to 1686 inclusive, and County Magistrate (Plymouth Co.) 1685 to 1692. Assistant of the Old Colony Government of Plymouth Colony 1689 to 1691, and representative to the General Court at Boston in 1692 (the first year after the two colonies, Plymouth and Massachusetts, were united), and for several succeeding years to 1697, Member of the Council 1706 and 1707. He was also Colonel of the Plymouth Regiment.

Jonathan Cushing Hon. (1759 - 1847) resided on Main Street, South Hingham. He was a farmer, Selectman 1804, and Representative 1808 to 1813 inclusive.
Military: Revolutionary War. He enlisted as a seaman in 1777. Joseph Lincoln and Jonathan Cushing were captured while serving on board the "Hazard". He was imprisoned at Halifax, 1778, and on the (Jersey) prison ship 1780. In 1779 Asabel Stodder was in service on the "Hazard."
Cushing, Jonathan, Hingham. Seaman, brigantine Hazard, commanded by Capt. Simeon Samson; engaged Oct. 17, 1777; discharged May 20, 1778; service, 7 mos. 3 days; roll dated Boston; also, same vessel and commander; said Cushing taken prisoner May 1, 1778; arrived home Oct. 12, 1778; wages allowed on previous roll to May 20, 1778; wages due for 4 months 22 days.

Joseph Cushing (1781 - 1852) was a printer in Boston and succeeded William Biglow, M.A., in editing (The Village Messenger), of Amherst, New Hampshire, about 1796-1800. This publication continued to Dec., 1801, and was succeeded in 1803 by (The Farmers Cabinet) (Coll. Mass. Hist Soc., Vol II). He established this newspaper. After losing everything in a bank scandal (not his fault), he removed to Baltimore in 1809, where he established himself as a bookseller. He there served in the Legislature and City Government as Mayor, and aided in the establishment of the first Public School in that city - as also in 1816 of the Savings Bank of Baltimore, of which he was President for 25 years until his death.

Interestingly, it seems that most people put Mary Jane Cushing's birthplace as Ashburnham, MA. Original records (several) at the New England Historic Genealogical Society all show her birthplace as Brooklyn (or Brookline), PA. Census records, with only one exception, have recorded her birthplace as PA.

Interestingly, it seems that most people put Mary Jane Cushing's birthplace as Ashburnham, MA. Original records (several) at the New England Historic Genealogical Society all show her birthplace as Brooklyn (or Brookline), PA. Census records, with only one exception, have recorded her birthplace as PA.
