NEHGR, April, 1875. Volume 29, pp. 153-157
Of Woburn. Freeman, 1651.
Born abt 1623, before his father came to Woburn, and of a wife whose name and record is unknown to her Woburn posterity, was married to Eunice MOUSALL, daughter of John MOUSALL, a founder and much honored citizen of Woburn, the erector of one of the first houses.
Deacon MOUSALL died Mar 27, 1665, leaving a widow Joanna; a son, John MOUSALL; and daughter Eunice, wife of John BROOKS; "but the name of MOUSALL as a surname, is now extinct from the place." The will of the senior John MOUSALL (19th of the 4th month, 1660) makes his two sons, John MOUSALL and John BROOKS, joint executors; gives to his son BROOKS's three children, and to his grandchild, Sarah BROOKS, and to his grandchild, Eunice BROOKS; to his son, John BROOKS (in whose house John MOUSALL, Sr.'s, widow was to have a peaceable living); gives also to his grandchild, Joanna BROOKS; and certain residue of his lands to his two sons [John MOUSALL, and son-in-law John BROOKS]. John MOUSALL, Jr.'s wife being the sister of John BROOKS, this relationship of the son is more clearly understood. It was the case of being doubly brothers-in-law; BROOKS marrying the only sister of MOUSALL, and MOUSALL marrying a sister of BROOKS. From this circumstance arose a partial (not total) combination of the property of Deacon John MOUSALL and Henry BROOKS, of which more is said in an article by one of the present writers, in the Register, vol. xlvii., p. 462, et seq.
In his will, Deacon John Mousall gives his great meadow [at Woburn Center in the vicinity of Prospect Street, a tract now covered with buildings] to his two sons equally, but in case the son, John Mousall, died without children, then he (John Mousall, Jr.) could give his share to his wife, for use during her life, and after the decease of John Mousall, the said son, and his wife leaving no heir, the share was to return to the son [in-law] John Brooks's children.
John Brooks was born about twenty years before the settlement of Woburn, and it is known that he was about 45 years of age in 1668. In 1690, at the age of about 67 years, he participated as a soldier in the Phips Expedition to Quebec. The will of John Brooks, Sr., dated July 1690, probated Nov. 16, 1691, he "being bound for Canada in the Expedition against the French enemy"...mentions wife, Mary; sons, Jabez, John and Ebenezer; daughters, Deborah, Eunice, Sarah and Joanna; grandchildren, Eunice Buck, Eunice Carter, Eunice Roberts, and John Buck, John Carter, John Brooks, David Roberts; and Mary and Elizabeth, his son John's two children; Eunice Brooks, daughter of his son Ebenezer; and Mary, daughter of his daughter, Deborah Richardson. He also names son John Richardson [husband of Deborah]; and mentions John Dane [Dean], an apprentice, and Rev Pastor Mr. Jabez Fox. To son John Brooks he gives that piece of land... called by the name of English Hills. He gives the care of his son Jabez to Lieut. James Converse, during his minority.
John Brooks, Sr., in Sept., 1691, was dismissed from ordinary training on account of his decrepitness and incapacity to serve. He was evidently a soldier in King Philip's War, 1675-6, but his identity is not positive.
In "A true list of those persons who have a just claim (either in Woburn, or the next adjacent towns) to the bounty of the General Court, by being (either personally, or by their ancestors) in the Canada expedition, Anno 1690. --Taken in Woburn, Feb. 19th, 1738 by virtue of an order of the said General Court, bearing date Dec. 22d, last past," appears: "23.--Jonathan Brooks, in right of his grandfather John Brooks, both of Woburn. Attested by Joseph Reed." (Mass Archives, 36: 246-47; 115; 574.)

David died intestate. Probate records show 4 children fighting over the estate. Elizabeth Pearson, Philander S. Fifield, and Mary A. Seavy all petitioned to NOT have eldest child Moses appointed executor, as he was trying to claim the whole estate as eldest plus having cared for his father during the final illness. A impartial executor finally declared the estate insolvent. (as per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation six page 20 of 79 printed Jul 22, 1999)

General Notes: Husband - Ephraim Buck
Ephraim, son of Roger Buck, was born at Cambridge, July 26, 1646. He married, January 1, 1671, Sarah, daughter of John and Eunice (Mousall) Brooks of Woburn. He doubtless settled there a few years before he married, as he is mentioned in the will of John Mousall, whose granddaughter he married, and Mr. Mousall died March 27, 1665. He was a man of much distinction. He was appointed local magistrate by the general court. to try small causes. He was a farmer. His grandson Jonathan was the founder of Bucksport, Maine. He died, January, 1721, at Woburn. Children: Sarah, born January 11, 1673; Ephraim, July 13, 1676; John, January 11, 1678-79, died young; John, February 7, 1679-80; Samuel, November 13, 1682, mentioned below; Eunice, July 7, 1685; Ebenezer, May 20, 1689; Mary, October 28, 1691. Ephraim settled in Woburn, Mass., and had a farm with his father in what is now the town of Wilmington. Later the farm was called the "OLD BUCK FARM". It was located one mile south of the meeting house. It was a quite a large tract of land , and no doubt he superintended its cultivation; but apart from this, nothing can be found to show his having any other occupation, except from the following extract from the N.E. Historic Genealogical Register, Vol . 29, p. 72: "William Brush and Elizabeth Gold, widow, both of Woburn, published according to law, as testified by Ephraim Buck, Constable 3."
From Sewall's History of Woburn and Frothingham's History of Charlestown we learn: "Ephraim Buck was taxed in the Meeting House Rates (Church Pew Rent) in 1672." "He was married 1-1-1671, to Sarah, daughter of John and Eunice Monsall Brooks, and grandaughter of Deacon John Monsall." In 1692 Ephraim was elected constable of Charlestown, where the town records show he solemnized marriages.

!Maine Historical Magazine pg 249; Buck Family of Bucksport by Late Hon. Rufus Buck 1857: Continuing from notes under Roger Buck and Ephraim Buck; The farm on which Ephraim (3rd gen.) settled is in the present town of Wilmington, and retains the name of the "old Buck Farm." It is situated one mile south of the meeting house, and the old fashioned gambel roof house is still standing in which Benjamin Buck now lives (1847.)

General Notes: Child - Samuel Buck
!Samuel, son of Ephraim Buck, was born at Woburn, November 13, 1682. About 1708, he married Hannah (???). He settled at Woburn, and was a farmer. Children: Hannah, born February 1, 1710; Samuel, May 7, 1711, mentioned below; Sarah, April 16, 1716; Zebediah, August 29, 1719. [William Richard Cutter, AM, New England Families (New York, 1913), ISBN - 0-8063-4612-4]
.
He resided in Wilmington, Middlesex Co, MA Oct 15, 1751.(2) He is the only Samuel known to have lived in Wilmington who could have been the elder when Ephraim's son, Samuel, was called "junior." Genealogy of the Herbert Hoover Family traces the ancestry of the President through Samuel's daughter Sarah, who is said to have married Jacob Winn. Woburn Records of Births, Deaths, and Marriages records this marriage in 1743, calling the parties both of Woburn. However, Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester, Massachusetts suggests that the family of Samuel Buck may have removed to Killingly, Connecticut, in the 1730s. No marriage of any of Samuel Senior's other children in recorded in Woburn. [Ralph Clark, Buck Family Page (http://ralphinla.rootsweb.com/buck.htm), Ralph Clark, Los Angeles, CA, ralphinla@earthlink.net]
General Notes: Child - Ebenezer Buck
!Ebenezer and Lydia had three children, of whom the eldest two died in infancy. In 1723 he married Judith Wood and in the following year he removed to that place , where the remainder of his life passed. In the History of Haverhill his name appeared only upon the tax lists, from which we may infer that the latter part of his life was quiet and uneventful. The Old Parish Church of this time, and with which he was probably connected, is still standing, though it had passed into the hands of the Unitarian Denomination, and had been raised and repaired. The early records of this church are inaccessible, if in existence.
Although little is known of this man, some insights into his characteristics and inner nature may be had from reading his writings which certainly shows unusual forethought in providing for the comfort of his wife, whilst his means were evidently limited. General Notes: Child - Henry Hugh Brooks
Henry Brooks was a resident of Concord Ma in 1639. He married and had children prior to arriving in Woburn Ma about 1650. He was a clothier and a selectman several years. He purchased a frame house and 178 acres of land at Horn Pond in Woburn from William Brackenbury of Charlestown on 20 Dec 1650. In a suit brought in Dec 1658 Henry testified that he was then about 66 years old; twenty-four years later in his will he described himself as stricken in years and about 91 years old. In Woburn records of 1678, Henry's homestead estate is described as located on South Street (presently lower Main Street). Henry's will, dated 18 Jul 1682, names his wife Anne, son-in-law John Mousall, sons John Timothy and Isaac, and daughters Sarah and Ann, and
Lestor' (i.e. Ann, wife of Andrew Lester). Henry had at least 3 and perhaps 4 wives. Last one mentioned was Ann in will, married 6 days before the will.
Freeman 14 March 1639.
Here is what The Great Migration Begins by Robert Charles Anderson, and A Genealogical Dictionary Of The First Settlers Of New England by James Savage have to say about Henry Brooks. (also, Brookes and Brooke)
His first wife is not listed.
His second wife was Susanna d 1681 widow of Ezekiel Richardson. He married her before 27 Mar 1651.
His third wife was Annis Jaquith he married her on 12 Jul 1682. In his will he mentions Annis and his children, John, Timothy, and Sarah who were still living. But the children's mother is not listed. However they were likely by his first wife. His second wife would have been past her childbearing years.
There are some references stating Henry was married to Grace Wheeler, but that is very unlikely. Grace is listed as the wife of Capt. Thomas Brooks and she died in 1664. At that time Henry was married to his second wife, and if he was not we would know it because Susanna's first husband Ezekiel Richardson was very famous and his history and those around him are well documented.

Beforeremoving to Swanzey, he lived some time in Billerica (see Hazen'sBillerica, p. 18, etc.). His father-in-law was a prominent Baptist, andTimothy was also interested in the Baptist tenets as held at that day, which was perhaps the occasion of his removal to Swansea or Swanzey, where a church of that faith flourished under the protection of thePlymouth government.
Timothy and Mehitable, conveyed to Henry Esten certain land, on Jne 3,1685. In this deed is the declaration that Roger Mowry, of Providence, was the father of Mehitable, the aforesaid wife, and that she had beenmarried before to Eldad Kinsley, of Rehoboth (Providence Early Records, vol. xiv., pp. 129, 188).
Previously, on Mar 9, 1680 [1681], Timothy Brooks and wife Mehitable, ofSwanzey, conveyed to Benjamin Mozey, of Rumney marsh, Boston, real estatein Billerica. (Middlesex Co. Deeds).

"Great Migration Begins:..." "JOSEPH, b. about 1647; m. say 1665 _____ _____, a sister of Putuspaquin, a minor sachem at Sanchekantacket, and probably the widowed mother of "Zachary" called the "son-in-law" of Joseph Doggett [Dukes County Sessions Court 26 May 1685]. Richard Andrew Pierce has made an extensive study of this couple. She was not Alice Sisseton as claimed by Banks [Martha's Vineyard Hist 3:140-141].
ASSOCIATIONS: John Doggett arrived in New England in 1630 and settled first at Watertown. One of his daughters married a son of SAMUEL EDDY whose brother JOHN EDDY had married a daughter of John Doggett of Groton, Suffolk. All of these circumstances would lead one to believe that John Doggett the immigrant to New England was a member of this same Doggett family, but no connection has yet been found."

Notes for JOHN GEORGE PECKHAM:
The surname PECKHAM was a locational name 'of Peckham' - tw o pari sh es in the County of Kent. A locational name usuall y denoted where a m an h eld his land, and indicated where h e actually lived. The original be ar er would take his name f rom the village, town, or area where he dwel t. Th is name wo uld identify his whole family, and would follow them wh er ev er they moved. Following the Crusades in Europe a need wa s fe lt f or a family name. This was recognised by those of n oble blood, who r ealis ed the prestige and practical advanta ge that it would add to the ir statu s. Early records of th e name PACCHAM (without surname) who was d ocument ed in th e year 1185, and Edward Peckhamm appears in County Suss ex i n t he year 1273. George Peckham of County Buckinghamshire , register ed at Oxf ord University, in the year 1575. Henr y Peccam, of County Susse x, registe red at the University i n the year 1588. William Hale marri ed a Sarah Pack ham at S t George's Hanover Square, London, in 1808.
Prior to the Invasion of William the Conquerer in 1066, n o one had surn am es, only christian or nicknames in England . Based on this, and our phy sic al attributes, we were give n surnames incorporating tax codes to sh ow tra des, areas i n which we lived, as today we have street names and nu mbe rs . Surnames were used in France and like speaking countrie s from a bo ut the year 1000, and a few places had second nam es even earlier. Ev en ea rly monarchs had additions to sho w attributes and character, for ex ampl e, Ethelred (red-hair ) the Unready (never prepared). Name: Henry PECKHAM
Sex: M
Birth: 1525 in SONNING, OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
Note: Alias: /Edward/ !Initial source: Two family group sheets of Henry or Edw ard Peckham, 1550, are in the Family Organization papers. They are from the FG RA collection of the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. One was submitted by Laura B. Allen, 137 So. Summit Ave. Prescott, California. Her source: Peckham Gen. pgs 161-166; B13 D1. The former is a book by Stephen Farnum Peckham, 1922, (FHL 1018879) the latter is "The Van Buren Family" now FHL 929.27 3 Va276p. The other FGRA sheet was submitted by Mary F. McSpadden Chase, 4122 Fountain St., Long Beach, Calif. Her sources: Peckham Gen. pgs 161-166; Register of Boxgrove, Eng.; Archives. The birth for Edward on both sheets was 1550, the first said "of Sonning, Berkshire, Eng.", son of John Peckham, and the other said "of Boxgrove, Sussex, Eng.", son of John or George Peckham and Elizabeth Brane or Brand. Only the second sheet had a death date, 1 Nov 1616, East Hampnett, Sussex, Eng. The wife on both sheets was Grace Sanbourne (see notes for her) The first sheet had seven children, no Clement nor Mabel, the first two born at Sonning and the rest christened at East Hampnet. The second had nine, the first three "of Sonning" and the rest christened at East Hampnet, except for Thomas, only a year given for him. Both had the first one born abt 1570 . However, that would make him only 20 years old when his first child was born . There is a copy in the Davenport Family Organization papers of a page taken from "Parochial Topography of the Rape of Chichester, Western Division of the County of Sussex". It has a pedigree titled "Peckham. Visit. 1634. C. 27, p . 60." It starts with John, "descended from the family of Peckham, of Yaldham, in Kent" and shows two sons, John, only the name, no wife nor dates, and Richard, "of Lordington, ancestor of the family of Peckham, of Little Green, in
Compton." No wife nor children shown for Richard. It shows John's son Edward "Lord of the Manor of East Hamptnett, 27 Eliz. 1585", his wife "Grace, daughter o f --- Samborne of co. Berks." and the only child shown for him was Henry, who married Elizabeth Badger. It says that Edward Peckham purchased East Hampnett in 1584 and it was held by his descendants until 1682 when it was sold to Sir George Jeffereys (afterwards Lord Chancellor). A note at the bottom of the page reads: MSS. B. From the Court Rolls. "1584, Mich. 30. The homage present the true bounds of their common, upon their othes. 'From Denfield Gate down between two butts, whereof Norton made one, and East Hampnett the other; and so down a green way to the bottom, where the B'ps common lyeth on the south side of the same bottom; and then along said bottom, in a green way, to Green Lane End, where Eartham Common lyeth on the east side, and where an ancient bound is between three lordships, viz. Eartham, Halfnaked, and East Hampnett, where a man is buried that did hang himself; and from thence back again S. W. to an oke, and from thence to the place where the stem of a beech stood, and so from thence to Tyne-wood Eng, and from thence to the S. W. end of Cock-street Corner '." "Peckham Genealogy", by Stephen F. Peckham, 1922, gives information about Henry alias Edward Peckham on page 161-157 and a list of seven children on page 167. These are the same as given on the first FGRA sheet. It also has several pedigree charts. The one on page 192, "Peckhams of West Sussex", starts with John (11) shown as the grandfather of this Edward, and gives his son John (1 2), his son Edward (13) and his family, the family of his son Henry (14),
including John (15) who emigrated to New England, but gives only the family of John's brother Henry (15) and his son John (16). About Edward, it says "purchased manor of Easthampnet 1584; referred to in Sambourne Pedigree (Visitation of 1574) as "Henry Peckham alias Edwood; alive in 1595. (Believed to be son of Henry (12); see Pedigree 4. S. F. P.)." It sa
