General Notes: Husband - Horace Anzolet Curtis

Not sure whether Horace's middle name was Angolet, Anzolet, Anzelot, or Anselot (various researchers have it spelled differently).

Horace A. Curtis was a farmer, sheepman and wool producer in Payson, Utah, where he was also active in the Republican Party and in social organizations. In 1899 he moved his family to Colonia Emanuel, one of the Mormon colonies in Chihuahua, Mexico. They moved to Arizona at the time of Pancho Villa's border raids and associated trouble at the time of the Mexican Revolution in 1912. He lived in Cochise County, Arizona for the rest of his life, and died there in 1921.

1920 Census, Pirtleville, Cochise County, Arizona:
CURTIS, Horace (head); male; white; age 63; married; birthplace: Utah; father's birthplace: New York; mother's birthplace: England; occupation: none
CURTIS, Martha (wife); female; white; age 60; married; birthplace: Utah; father's birthplace: New York; mother's birthplace: Ohio; occupation: none

General Notes: Wife - Martha Jane Wightman

Martha Jane Wightman and Horace Anzolet Curtis, both of Payson, were married on 3 May 1875. They lived in Payson until 1899, where all seven of their children were born. In 1899 they moved to Mexico, and later to Pirtleville, Arizona. Following her husband's death in 1921, Martha Jane lived with her son William in Pirtleville until her death in 1931. She is buried in the Cavalry Cemetery (City of Douglas Cemetery), Douglas, Cochise County, Arizona.

Records:
Mrs. Martha J. Curtis was elected first vice-president of the Red Cross Society at Payson Utah on June 15, 1898 (see http://udn.lib.utah.edu/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/slt18&CISOPTR=7685&CISOSHOW=7692&CISOSHOW2=7769 ). Other articles show that she was also involved in the Republican party and other social organizations.

Not found in 1900 and 1910 U.S. censuses -- I had suspected they were in Mexico during this time, and found records confirming it. Their son William's WWI draft card and the 1930 census indicated that he worked on a cattle ranch in Mexico. I also located the following article, confirming that they moved to Mexico in 1899:

DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER, December 22, 1899:
"The long expected company of Mexico colonists started from Payson, Utah, over the Short Line for the state of Chihuahua, December 15. A few visitors accompanied them to look at the country, and will remain during the winter. The following is a list by families: Abraham Done and family of ten, James E. Jones, jr., and family of four; Amasa L. Jones and family of five; Mrs. Louise Abegg and family of four; MRS. MARTHA CURTIS* AND FAMILY OF FOUR**, S. A. Hunsaker and family of five; Lorenzo A. Huish and son, Edward A. Huish and son, Joseph S. Douglas, John Done, sr., and wife, Henry C. Tanner, Niels Frederickson.
There were four cars, loaded with twenty-four horses, eight vehicles and wagons, household goods and machinery, and one emigrant car for the passengers.
Charles Patten and wife and James A. Daniels left over the Rio Grande on the early train this morning, making a total of forty-four persons from Payson and neighborhood most of whom will locate at Emanuel Dublan, of which ward Elder S. J. Robinson has lately been installed bishop, with Joseph Cordon first and A. B. Call second counselors. Bishop Robinson is from Payson.
This place (Payson) seems to be the mother of new settlements, as there is no room here to expand and make new homes. People have emigrated from here to all points of the compass."
(see http://udn.lib.utah.edu/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/davis1&CISOPTR=14290&CISOSHOW=14292&CISOSHOW2=14309 )

*Apparently Horace A. Curtis had gone to Mexico earlier in the year 1899; Martha Jane followed with the children.
**the oldest two daughters, Cora and Ethel, were already married, so the four children who accompanied their mother to Mexico were apparently Czar A., 17, Martha Jennie, 15, Emma May, 13, and Charlotte, 6. The oldest son, William W., had apparently gone earlier with his father.

General Notes: Child - Cora Centenna Curtis

cemetery record at http://www.mycochise.com/cembisbeeef.php gives her birth date as 24 Mar 1876, death (or interment) date 27 Apr 1909 but www.familysearch.org gives her birth date as 22 Mar 1876, death date May 1910. Cemetery record is probably correct.

GENEALOGY OF THE FAIRBANKS FAMILY OF THE WEST (1971), by Lynn & Katie Fairbanks, p. 42:
1A. Ralph Fairbanks (son of David Brooks Fairbanks and Hannah Mosely Johnson), born 22 Nov., 1874, Payson, Utah. Married 22 Dec., 1896, Cora Centenna Curtis (she died May, 1910*). Died 11 Jan., 1947.
Children:
1B. Viola Fairbanks. Born: 25 July, 1898, Green River, Wyoming. Marr: (1) 11 Nov., 1927**, Emmett R. Foltz (divorced 8 Nov., 1928); (2) 14 April, 1940, Roy E. Tomblin (divorced 29 July, 1955). Maiden name restored , no issue from either marriage.
2B. Keith Fairbanks. Born: 24 June, 1900, Leadville, Colorado. Died: July or Aug., 1905.

*Cora died in Apr 1909 according to cemetery records of Lowell (now Bisbee), Arizona (burial date 27 Apr 1909).
**Viola's marriage date was actually 11 Nov 1917. "Viola Fairbanks Foltz" was listed as next-of-kin on Emmett Rankin Foltz' World War I draft registration card, 12 Sep 1918 in Mohave Co., Arizona.

General Notes: Child - Ethel Estella Curtis

Ethel E. Curtis, 18, of Payson, and Henry Pueblo, 23, of Payson, married 5 Dec 1896 at Payson, Utah (see http://abish.byui.edu/specialCollections/westernStates/westernStatesRecordDetail.cfm?recordID=272351 )

THE DAILY ENQUIRER (Provo newspaper), December 7, 1896: "Henry Pueblo, aged 23, and Ethel E. Curtis, aged 18, (both) of Payson, have been granted licenses to wed." (see http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cgi-bin/docviewer.exe?CISOROOT=/tde4b&CISOPTR=3694&CISOSHOW=3698&CISOSHOW2=3720 )

1900 Census, Payson, Utah County, Utah:
PUEBLO, Henry (head of family); born Apr 1873; age 27; married 3 yrs.; occupation: Sheep Herder
PUEBLO, Ethel (wife); born Apr 1878; age 22; married 3 yrs.; mother of 2 children (both still living)
PUEBLO, Albert (son); born Jan 1898; age 2
PUEBLO, Delemar (son); born Aug 1899; age 10mo.

They apparently divorced, and the two sons were raised by their father. They were apparently the only children of Ethel Estella Curtis, because the 1910 census also indicates that she was the mother of 2 children, and no more children were listed with her in subsequent censuses.

Ethel Curtis and N.C. Gibson married 15 June 1906 at Douglas, Cochise County, Arizona (see http://abish.byui.edu/specialCollections/westernStates/westernStatesRecordDetail.cfm?recordID=199379 )

1910 Census, Douglas, Cochise County, Arizona Territory:
GIBSON, Ned C. (head of family); male; white; age 34; married 3 yrs.; birthplace: Ohio; father's birthplace: Ohio; mother's birthplace: Ohio; occupation: Electrician, Smelter
GIBSON, Ethel (wife); female; white; age 32; married 3 yrs.; mother of 2 children (both still living); birthplace: Utah; father's birthplace: Utah; mother's birthplace: Utah
(no children listed with them)

1920 Census, Manhattan district 21, New York City, New York:
GIBSON, Ethel, 39, married; birthplace: Utah; father's birthplace: Utah; mother's birthplace: Utah; occupation: Milliner
GIBSON, Ned, 39, married; birthplace: Ohio; father's birthplace: Ohio; mother's birthplace: Ohio; occupation: Electrician
(no children listed with them)

1930 Census ??
(Ethel and Ned were apparently divorced by 1930, because he was living in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, with a different wife)

Social Security Death Index (SSDI): Ethel SMITH, birth date: 7 Apr 1878, death date: Sep 1968; SSN #117-12-0515 (issued in New York); death residence: Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California.
IGI: Ethel E. Curtis, born 7 Apr 1878 in Payson, Utah, Utah, dau. of Horace Curtis and Martha Jane Wightman, died 3 Sep 1968 (LDS Church membership record of a deceased person).

THE DAILY ENQUIRER (Payson, Utah newspaper), Sept. 27, 1889:
Little Willie Curtis, of Payson, Meets With a Severe Accident
Sept. 23, 1889 Payson -- "Thursday afternoon, Willie, a nine-year old son of Horace Curtis, fell from the barn and dislocated both wrists. Dr. Tilson was called in, and after administrating ether, both hands were successfully replaced. The little fellow suffered considerable until yesterday, when the pain began decreasing and great hope is entertained that he will now soon recover and be enabled to throw away both of the slings that ornament his neck."

John J. Newell Arizona GENWEB Archives Arizona, THE YOUNGEST STATE, 1913, page 20:
John J. Newell, serving in an efficient, able and conscientious way as deputy sheriff of the town of Naco, was born in Ireland in 1874, a son of Michael and Mary Kane Newell. The parents came to the United States when the subject of this review was only two months old and settled in Illinois where the father farmed for a number of years. He has now retired from active life and he and his wife reside in West Point Illinois. In their familywere eight children: Kate, who married John O'Day of Lafayette, Colorado, Patrick H., a resident of West Point; Mary who married Alexander Clampitt of West Point; Ellen, the deceased wife of John Kruger of Hamilton, Illinois; Winnie, who married John Hughes of Bisbee Arizona; M.F. of Stillwell Illinois, Thomas W. of the same city and John J. of this review. John J. Newell grew to manhood upon his father's farm in Illinois, attending the district schools until he was twenty years of age. At that time he came west and settled in Bisbee, Cochise County, where he was employed at the smelter works of the Copper Queen Mining Company. He spent two years there, and then came to Naco, taking up government land upon the site where the town now stands. He was also connected for three years with the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company as clerk in the forwarding office, but at the end of that time gave his entire attention to the development of his ranch for a number of years. It was, however, later purchased by the town site company and laid out into the town of Naco. Mr. Newell then abandoned farming and turned his attention to business pursuits. He has held public office in the city for several years having been elected as Marshall and being afterward appointed deputy sheriff. He still holds the latter position and has made a very creditable official record, displaying the utmost fidelity and conscientiousness in the discharge of his duties. Mr. Newell was married in 1901 to MISS JENNIE CURTIS, A NATIVE OF Utah AND A DAUGHTER OF H.A. AND MARTHA WHITEMAN CURTIS, who went to Utah in the early days, joining the Mormon colony there. Mr. and Mrs. Newell have three children: Thomas, Jack and Charlotte. (from http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/az/statewide/bios/newell.txt )

Mr. Newell was married in 1901 to Miss Jennie Curtis, a native of Utah and a daughter of H.A. and Martha Whiteman Curtis, who went to Mexico in the early days, joining the Mormon colony there. Mr. and Mrs. Newell have three children: Thomas, Jack and Charlotte. (from http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/az/statewide/bios/newell.txt )

=========================

The Newell family founded the town of Naco, Arizona on the U.S./Mexican border.

"The Newells purchased the land, which was then close to the railroad tracks, at the turn of the century with hopes the Bisbee Mining Co. would put a smelter there. They asked too much, and the company that would become Phelps Dodge Mining went with the Douglas smelter location instead."
(see http://www.svherald.com/articles/2004/09/04/local_news/news6.txt )
"Newell Cantonment" was built in Naco in 1916 as a border garrison following Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico. "Named after John J. Newell, a prominent landowner who leased the site to the War Department for $1 a year." (see photos at http://members.aol.com/cdeichert/ghostfort.html )

Camp Newell
"The post began as a tent camp in 1913 during Mexican Revolution upheavals along the border. It blossomed into a full-fledged Army post with more than two dozen adobe buildings in 1916. It was named for John J. Newell, a Naco landowner who leased the property to the Army.
Members of the 9th and 10th cavalries, made up of African-Americans known as Buffalo Soldiers, were assigned to the post.
Within 10 years things had quieted in Mexico and the Army returned the post to the Newells. Some of them lived in the larger hospital building until 1990. Over the decades, the family rented the officers' and noncommissioned officers' quarters as residences, and the Civilian Conservation Corps camped there in 1936."

====================

NACO, Ariz. - An extremely small border town with less than 1,000 residents can lay claim to something that other communities cannot:
Naco, Ariz., has the distinction of being the first city in the U.S. to be bombed by a foreign power - in this case, Mexico. Some of the four bombs that were to be dropped on Naco, Sonora, were mistakenly dropped on the American side during the latter stages of the Mexican Revolution in 1929.
As soldiers from the revolution fought along the border, residents stayed at the Naco Hotel, which at the time claimed to have bulletproof rooms. According to records from the Arizona Mining & Historical Museum, five men were killed and another 85 were wounded in Naco, Ariz.
The construction of Camp Newell, initially known as Camp Naco, began in 1915, following what became known as the Battle of Naco in 1914.
The camp was built in part to support soldiers who helped keep the Mexican Revolution outside of the United States and in Naco, Sonora. Records from the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum stated the Mexican Revolution ran from 1910 to 1928, and it was not uncommon for small battles to happen on American soil.
......Naco resident Foy Armstrong said the small community is well aware of its place in history and its part during the Mexican Revolution.
Armstrong said one of the bombs mistakenly dropped in Naco, Ariz., completely destroyed a building right off Towner Street.
She also said there are still some bullet holes from the revolutionary war on the wall next to the road that leads into Mexico.
"Everyone knows about the bombing and the people who were engaged in the war," she said.
Ernie Rogers, owner of Rogers Border Service in Naco, said ETHEL NEWELL**, A DESCENDANT OF THE NEWELL FAMILY WHO FOUNDED THE TOWN IN 1898, was using one of the mortars that was dropped as a door stop at her residence in Hereford."
Rogers said Naco has something that no other community can claim.
"It's the only place in the central United States that has been hit by a foreign bomb," he said.
........Rebecca Orozco, consultant for the Southwest Learning Center for Cochise College in Douglas, said the Battle of Naco, which lasted 114 days, was one of the most important revolutionary battles in the Western Hemisphere.
Orozco said this battle marked the downfall of (Pancho) Villa, with the end result being the United States moving more than 5,000 troops to the border to help keep Naco safe.
These troops were stationed at Camp Newell, which became a big military outpost during the (Mexican) revolutionary war. Today, to ensure that Camp Newell's place in history is not forgotten, an effort is under way to preserve it. On Tuesday, more than 40 people met to tour the old camp, and learn about it.
(see http://www.svherald.com/articles/2004/08/15/local_news/features_and_opinions/feature1.txt )

"They originally moved troops into Naco because of the revolution spilling over the border," Orozco said. The battle of Naco, she said, was the longest battle ever to take place in the Western Hemisphere, 114 days long.
At one point, the Naco colonel for the Buffalo Soldiers had to cross the border, to tell the conflicting Mexican parties that they needed to be more careful because their errant bullets were killing unsuspecting people on the United States side of the border.
"So they attacked Naco from the side," Orozco said of the Mexican Constitutionalists battling the Pancho Villa forces.
The historic fort is located about two city blocks from the U.S.-Mexico border.

General Notes: Husband - Capt. Ira P. Witham

The experiences of Charles H. Witham Co.E 28th Regiment Maine
A 19 year old man from Surry,Maine
this was taken from a letter to Adj General Selden Connor State of Maine on July 31st, 1896.Mr.Charles H. Witham had sent to the Adj General telling of his experiences with the 28th Maine.
While 4 companies of us were stationed at Plaquemine, LA on the Mississippi River, our company by order of Lieutenant Colonel Hadlock who was in charge, was assigned to provost duty under a Capt. Albert Stern of the 171st New York Regiment Was Provost Marshall at the time. One of our duties was to visit every steamer that called, and see that nothing was landed without passes for same period .
On the afternoon of April 17, 1863,I visited a steamer bound up the river, and the Capt. told me that he had landed some freight on the other side of the river about six miles below that he believed there was something wrong about it but the parties had passes to land it and he could not refuse. I reported the same to Capt. Stearns, and he told me to send a guard right over to take charge of it and he would go over in the morning early and see to it. I sent Sgt. M.P.A..Wilder and six men right over, about 9 o clock the next morning I called at the Marshall's office, and to my surprise found him there. I said how was this Capt., I thought you had gone over the river to look after that matter, he said he didn't feel very well and so didn't go. I said that would not do I can't have my men over there that way, if you are not going, I will go. Well he said I will tend to things here and I was soon off. After arriving on the other side I got a horse and saddle and was not long going down the river to the place where the freight had been landed [some six miles] and to my surprise I found no men there. I soon learned that the stuff landed was some clothing for the Confederate Army, and a company of them between 75 and 100 came on to them that morning, between daylight and Sunrise.
With Capt. Standley, of the other branch of my Regiment and several of his men in front of them that they were taken prisoner, on their way to this place, and they thought it was a company of Union soldiers as they approached until it was too late to resist, and were taken prisoners with the rest. The clothing was soon gathered up and the company with their prisoners was soon on the return.
I hurried back up the river to get back to report the matter to the Lieutenant Colonel; when I got back to where I had landed, the boatman had gone back. So I told the Planter to call his slaves and launch a small boat I saw along side of his house, for I couldn't wait for the other to return when the men got the boat to about halfway down I saw a squad mounted about half a mile down the river riding fast towards us, in a few moments they were in front of me, as I stood on the levy, a Lt. and 4 Confederates with guns leveled on me and three of them pulled their guns but only one discharged the others misfired. That was a charge of heavy buckshot one shot striking me in the left side of the face very close to the temple, one in the left shoulder, and two in the left arm above the elbow, and I fell to the ground unconscious, as they supposed to die.
I learned later that the Planters daughter came right out to where I lay and begged of the Lt. to stop the men from taking of my things and let me alone and let me die. So he made the men return my hat & boots which they had taken, but my watch and chain and my Revolver they took and when they joined the company again, showed the prisoners my revolver and told them I was dead.
But that dear kind lady, had the slaves take me to her house and soon after had them take me to the boat, lying on a mattress, with my head resting in her lap, an umbrella spread over me to keep the hot sun off, and a wet cloth lying over the wound in my head, she had the men take me across the river again, and would wet the cloth often in the river to keep it as cool a she could. My own mother could not have done more for me and the Lady and was entire stranger to me.
They raised a small sum of money there and gave the Lady for her kindness too me. The next day she returned the money, and said she wouldn't take it, that she had only done her duty and would not keep the money.
When our surgeon saw me he thought I could not recover, and doctors of the town that came to see me thought the same, later in the day the Medical Director from Baton Rouge called on his way to New Orleans, and came to see me, he ordered me sent to Baton Rouge and he would do all he could to save me, and he kept his word.
For lacking a couple of days of three-weeks I had recovered enough that he allowed me to leave the hospital and go back to my company, still stopping in Plaquemine; saying you must be very careful of your self and they can dress your wounds just as well as if you were here.
The shot remains in my head yet and the one in my shoulder, the upper one in the arm passed through and the lower one was taken out. In a few days after my return to Plaquemine I got a fine saddle horse and began taking rides everyday, the first day I rode out about a mile and was so weak that I almost fell off the horse before I got back, but the next day I felt stronger, and kept gaining nicely for sometime until other troubles came on.
On the following June about the 3rd or 4th our Regiment was ordered to the front at Port Hudson and I began to pack up when my Capt. came along and said what are you doing, I said I want to go with you, he said you are hardly fit to be out of bed, much more than going to the front He called the Col., and the Col. Said, don't you think of it, but stay here till you get stronger, so I remained at Plaquemine, and I assisted the Provost Marshall what I could.
On the morning of the 18th of June just after returning to our quarters after trying to eat a little breakfast but was so sick with a bad case of jaundice, that I could not eat but a few mouthfuls and drink a cup of tea. When one of the men came running in and said, the Confederates are riding into town on every street. I told the men that were there to go get on their equipment as quick as possible and jumped for my own but before I could, a round of bullets were coming through the windows and doors.
One of the men named Kimball, grabbed his gun and returned their fire and shot one of their men who fell from his horse and died right there, but I quickly saw it was useless to stand out against so large a force and ordered the men to surrender, as we all were invalids and left their to recruit.
So we were taken prisoner, some 22 or 23 in all, among them was Sgt. Brown of my own company. We were soon formed in line and started on the march out-of-town. They burned one steamer that called there, while they were on the road they done other damage. As we were marching out of town, one of them said to me to your unwell, I told him that I was, and had been for some time [you see it was just two months before that I was wounded]. He stopped his horse and jumped off said here take my horse I am better able to walk then you are, another man just back of him said here is a horse with no one on it, and then he said well then take that one. It was the horse the man was shot off when they charged on our quarters, and some of the clothing taken from my Valise was hitched to the saddle; but I was glad to get a chance to ride I was so weak.
After getting well back from the river out of danger, reaching the balance of the Division that was on the road down the river, between three and five thousand of them, a short stop was made. There all the prisoners were paroled but myself, I being the only commissioned officer, and their orders were not to parole any of them if captured, so they took me along with them, and my case looked very dark, but I was pleased to see the others get paroled if I could not. We were soon on the move again with the rest of the Division as I said before down the river. The travel was rough over a broken country and rather slow.
In the evening two men that were in charge of me met with the commander of one of the Regiments and told him that I was very sick and could hardly get along with them, he said we can't be going much further tonight and he shall have my horse a part of the time before he shall walk, and see tomorrow what will be done with him.
We were on the move till quite late that night, and off again in the morning, and part of the time I was in the saddle, part of the time a citizen had me in the cart with him, then I would be on the forage wagon and so on as we moved on. The men were very kind to me seemed very sorry that they had not better conveyance and something better to eat, I didn't look for any such feeling as that and I felt very thankful to them for it I assure you.
On the afternoon of the 20th we made a stop on a plantation to clear a very heavy shower, and take lunch. As I went to the tank to get a drink of water I met a Sgt.Major who looked at me very sharp, and passed on, in a few moments he returned with the same officer I had met the night of the 18th and could see that he was a Lieutenant Colonel, as soon as I saw him coming towards me,he said why Lt. I did not know you was still with my Regiment, I thought you was with the other part of the Division; I am very sorry indeed I did not know it I would have some better conveyance than you had, extending his hand and gave me as friendly a shake as I ever got. He asked me to take a walk around the house with him. I thanked him and went with him, there he ordered lunch of us both, and also call for pen Ink and paper and began writing, in a few moments he handed me the paper, there he said is your release from our force you can remain here as long as you wish and no Confederate force will trouble you, unless you are found with arms in your hands.
One cannot imagine my surprise, and I thanked him very warmly I assure you. Then I learned his name as I read James Walker Lieutenant Colonel 2nd Regiment Lepas Mounted Riflemen. In our short chat together the Col. spoke of the war with a very deep feeling very sorry it had begun for and hoped it soon would be stopped. The Col. soon arose saying well I will have to leave you as my Regiment is already falling in, and again gave me as more my shake of the hand as warm a shake as one could have and bid me goodbye as he left the house.
I went to the front of the house and returned his kind salute of the hand as he rode by at the head of his Regiment. I remained at the plantation that night and the next morning I started back for Plaquemine part of the time on horseback part of the time on foot and such conveyance as I could get until I got back without any interference, and took the first steamer that called, for Baton Rouge, glad to get safe within our own lines once more and later joined my Regiment again.
