Notes: Marriage

Happy Anniversary Alexander & Elizabeth, married 30 July 1771, in Otsego Co., New York!
In another time and place a young man named Alexander Harper and a beautiful young woman named Elizabeth or "Betsy" Bartholomew, met and fell in love. Their world was one of exciting and revolutionary thoughts, ideas and deeds. Amidst the conflict of unsettling events, war in their own backyard, separation from their Motherland, the uniting of the Colonies and the formation of a New Land, they found love in one another. Leo Tolstoy wrote, "Where love is, there is God also."
And so Alexander & Elizabeth founded their marriage in their belief in God and in one another. Together they built a log home where they would begin their new family. Hewn from logs they felled, laboring side-by-side, they built a crude cabin that would shelter their loved ones from the great storms of life.
They hauled stones to build a fireplace and a hearth where they would prepare their food, keep warm wrapped in hand-made quilts, rock their babies to sleep, read from their Bible and where these two young lovers would plan and prepare for their life ahead. By the light of a candle they would often sit, long into the night, discussing the great events of which they were an integral part. Gathered by their fireside were friends and family who would partake of the simple but gracious hospitality offered by Alexander & Elizabeth. They were always anxious to share the bread of their table with others.
It was here, as the shadows of the fire danced on the hand-hewn log walls, that decisions were made, prayers offered, hymns sung, and in a few quiet moments, each would find peace, safety and love in the arms of one another.
Helen Keller wrote, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart."
And so it was that Alexander & Elizabeth felt with their heart what must be done to preserve liberty. Together they made a promise to give their all in the great and noble cause. They were true patriots and pledged their lives in a cause dearer then life itself.
And when the trials of the Revolution were over, Alexander & Elizabeth felt with their hearts that it was time to leave the comforts of New York. They felt with their hearts there could be a new beginning in a new land. They dreamed of a settlement in the far-off Ohio Territory - a land wild and untamed, a wilderness in the farthest western part of the New Country. Here they would build their world anew. Here they would establish a colony, a place of peace, a place for their children and grandchildren, a place with plenty of game & wild berries; clear streams from which they would draw their life-sustaining water, dense forests which would provide logs for building and wood for the fire; and cool, green meadows where their children could run barefoot through the tall grass. It would take them two years to prepare for the journey. They sold off much and packed only would they would need; a few books, cooking utensils, bedding, clothing, dried seeds for planting, tools for breaking the new land and for felling the trees, boots and some livestock. Across New York & Pennsylvania they traveled, across Lake Erie by barge. Their party of 23 people landing at the mouth of Dock Creek, in June of 1798.
It was here in the wilderness, the land of their hopes and dreams, that Alexander died only three months after the landing.
Our sweet Elizabeth was called upon to lay away her sweetheart, the love of her youth and the companion of her life. With her dreams of a new life shattered, she stood weeping upon the freshly-turned soil as her Alexander was laid to rest.
She had mourned him dead when he was taken prisoner so many years before, and now she was called upon to greive for him once more.
But she did not give up. She carried on, the colony of their dreams became a reality and Harpersfield was founded and grew.
Seasons would come and go, children and grandchildren would be called home - so many times gentle Elizabeth made the trek up to that burial ground in Unionville and mingled her tears with those of loved ones.
Until, finally, in June of 1833, Elizabeth passed into eternity and was reunited with her Alexander.
Theirs was a marriage of perfect blending - one was weak where the other was strong. Their love carried them through the great revolution and beyond. Theirs was the hope for a better future for those who came after them. Theirs was the dream for those long beyond the horizon, who would walk in their footsteps. Somehow they saw us, the loved us, they prayed for us, they lived for us.
On this day 230 years ago, they were not thinking of the Revolution or the new land in the Ohio Territory, or of Gen. Washington, they were thinking only of the love they saw in one another's eyes and in the warmth they felt in one another's arms.
We pause today and reflect upon their goodness, their faith, their courage, their hardships, their successes. We rejoice with them today in the wonder of new love and in the graciousness of the love they knew which carried them into eternity.
How we love them . . . how we miss them.
Beyond the veil of death they wait to welcome us and embrace us. Today we honor them - our noble and courageous ones.
Alexander & Elizabeth - congratulations!

Dear Friends,
On Saturday, November 19, Fran fell in the parking lot where we live while getting in the car. She tripped over her walker and fell face down on the pavement. There was severe head damage but she was OK immediately. Later in the apartment she suffered a major seizure. She was transported to the hospital but never regained consciousness. She had severe hemorrhage in the brain, in part due to the drug Plavix which she took to prevent clots. It is a great cardiovascular drug but poison for intracranial bleed. Neurosurgeon said he could operate but results would be bleak, Fran had written and said many times she didn't want extraordinary means to be kept alive. Life support was removed and she quietly expired Monday afternoon (November 21 @ 3:10 PM). The children and I know that Fran is in a much better place - with her Lord Jesus - and is now free of pain that was a constant torment, There will be a memorial service at Fourth Presbyterian Church; 5500 River Road; Bethesda, MD 20816, Saturday, December 3 at 3:00 PM.
