Isaac Mayo Heath was the last to go, but he didn't take his family with him or even tell them where we went, according to his grandson, Raymond Heath, Sr. He had been discharged from the Army for a disability and had been working in a slate quarry. He left a wife, Lydia, a son and two daughters. He died in MN in 1898 of cancer. Other sons who fought in the Civil War and survived to marry and raise families in MN were, Solon Beal Heath, Charles Wesley Heath, and Elnathan Mayo Heath. Solon and Elnathan both married Mayo girls, but Charles married Melissa Willey. Bethuel, the son who died in the war was married to Elizabeth Down and had one son, Rice D. She married and later divorced Anthony Rollins. Leonora "Nora" married an Alden.

In August the company, under siege from the French and Indians, surrendered and on the march to Ft Edward suffered the infamous massacre at Ft Wm Henry on August 9. "The New Hampshire battalion was in the rear and suffered severely. Out of the two hundred, eighty were killed and taken."
In Capt Hercules Mooney's Co: Thomas Crawford Mar 5- Nov 5
In Capt Jacob Bayley's company (with John Hazzen as 1st Lt):
William Heath Mar 5- Nov 5
Benjamin Heath Mar 5- Nov 5
JOSIAH HEATH, JR Mar 5- Nov 5
Abraham Heath Mar 5- Nov 5
JOSIAH HEATH Mar 5- no discharge date listed
Jonathan Heath - Mar 5- Aug 9
So it would appear that Jonathan was in the part of the regiment that was at Ft William Henry - was probably wounded - but perhaps he was killed?? Under the listing of the regiment are many who were discharged on that date - but none say "killed". (Of course I only copied the pertinent companies and so now I have to go back to see if any in the other companies were listed as "killed" on that date.(I suppose Kendall is loving this, since The Last of the Mohicans is one of her favorite movies.) Anyway, interesting isn't it that we have both a Josiah and a Josiah Jr??
OK, on to 1758. NH raised another regiment for Crown Point - 800 men under Col John Hart. A portion went to Louisborg under Hart and the remainder under Lt Goffe on the "western frontier"
Capt John Hazzen's Company (he was from the Hampstead, Plaistow, Atkinson area):
Thomas Crawford Apr 6-Oct 27
William Heath Apr 24-Oct 31
JOSIAH HEATH Apr 12 - Nov 3
Saw nothing for 1759, but I have to re-check.
In 1760; 800 men raised for the invasion of Canada under (now Colonel), John Goffe:
In Capt John Hazzen's Company:
Thomas Crawford Mar 5-Nov 23 (Was at Albany Nov 13)
Asa Heath Mar 5-Nov 16 (was at Ft #4 on Oct 23)
JOSIAH HEATH Mar 6-Nov 16 (was at Ft #4 on Oct 13)
James Heath Mar 6-Nov 27
Nehemiah Heath Mar 6-Nov 27
Richard Heath Mar 10 - (Jonathan Nelson in his stead)
William Heath Mar 12- Nov 27
JOSIAH HEATH, JR Mar 6 - (DESERTED 19 July, 15 m. post.)
Zebediah Heath Mar 6 - (DESERTED 19 July, 15 m. post.)
OK, now does anyone have a guess what "15 m. post" means?? 15 miles from post? Looks like we might have father Josiah serving at Ft #4 (makes sense as he would have been among the older in the militia. At 59, he was just one year shy of being exempt from militia duty) and son, Josiah (age 33) and his brother Zebediah (age 29) on the march to Canada and at some point they decided 'to hell with this' and took off? OK, so not the most illustrious ancestor story, but at least it's something on these guys.
Now that I've detailed you to death, here's what I'm wondering. Is there a way we can narrow down the odds of just who these Heaths were? According to Haverhill VR's, all the Josiah's born there were related to us and there's only one Zebediah - Josiah and Mary Merrill's son. But I don't have any NH records. And what about Jonathan...would that have been the Jonathan son of
Josiah and Mary too? Haverhill VR's show:
1) Jonathan, s. triplet, John and Hannah (Haines), Nov. 24, 1699. (must have
died young)
2) Jonathan, s. John and Hannah (Haines), Nov. 21, 1706.
3) Jonathan, s. Josiah and Mary, bp. July 21, 1728. C. R. 1.
4) Jonathan, s. Caleb, bp. Jan. 25, 1740-41. C. R. 2.
Now, we know that Jonathan (3) lived in Plaistow, NH so would have been eligible for NH Militia. But it may have been (4). He was baptised at the North Parish Church (C.R.2) so was likely among the Heath's that ended up in NH in 1741 as well. According to Giorgi, he was from Hampstead. However, the person who put that entry in her book thoroughly researched (4)'s revolutionary history/pension. Wouldn't you think those records might have mentioned had he also served in the F&I wars?(2) was mentioned in a deed from his grandfather in 1731 as living in Norwich, CT, so I don't think it was him.

"Josiah and Maria (Mayo) Heath left for Minnesota between 1860 and 1870. All their surviving sons also went to MN by 1880, most of them taking their whole families with them. Heath, and two daughters, Ada Frances, and Zelpha L, who married a Rollins and had at least one child, Leonora Rollins. Zelpha worked in a woolen mill in 1880, probably in Dover. She married and later divorced Anthony Rollins. Leonora "Nora" married an Alden.

Josiah had one son who did not fight in the Civil War, and that was my ancestor, James Morse Heath. He worked a farm in N. Brownville, living beside his in-laws, Eliot and Ruth Powers. He married Naomi E. Powers and had several children. By 1870 James was living in Stanfor, MN with a woman named Mary Anne (2nd wife?) and some of his daughters. His son Valentine had stayed in ME and was working on Polly Moer's farm at Katahdin Iron Works. Valentine left for MN on March 27, 1871, after having dinner with Albion Snow, one of Nancy Heath Snow's children. He went to Princeton, MN." from Betty Lufkin Heath Genealogy in Summary

1756: "For the expedition against Crown Point...this province (NH) raised a
regiment of 700 men under, Colonel Nathaniel Meserve, Lt Col. John Hart and
Major John Goffe"
In Capt Samuel Watts Company:
Bartholomew Heath May 12 - Nov 9
Benjamin Heath May 15 - Dec 18
William Heath May 12 - Dec 18
Zebediah Heath May 12 - Dec 18
Samuel Heath May 12 - Dec 9
JOSIAH HEATH May 12 - Dec 18
William Heath, Jr May 15 - Dec 18
Apparently the campaign ended in the Fall as reinforcements sent to join Meserve in October were only out about two weeks before they were discharged (all these men were discharged Oct 20)
In 1757:For the expedition to Crown Point NH furnished 500 men under Meserve and Goffe. Part of this regiment...went from New York to Halifax...whilst the rest of the regiment (under command of Goffe) was posted at Ft William Henry." In August the company, under siege from the French and Indians, surrendered and on the march to Ft Edward suffered the infamous massacre at Ft Wm Henry on August 9.

General Notes: Child - Bethuel M. Heath

I got Bethuel Heath's pension records in the mail today. As you know, he was captured in VA and sent to Andersonville Prison, where he died. Well, today some interesting facts came to light. I'll quote from the records, sent from the Archives.
"Me, Martin W. Spaulding and George Wilkinson of Milo in the County of Piscataquis and the State of Maine on oath declare and say that we are and have for 15 years past well acquainted with Bethuel Heath who was a private in Co.D, 17th Regt Me Vols and with his wife Elizabeth A. Heath and with their children - we live near neighbors to them - we live near the west line of Milo and Elizabeth lives near the east line of Sebec, we know that her said husband was never married to any other person but Elizabeth A. Heath, that Zilpha S. Heath and Rice D. Heath are the only legitimate children of Elizabeth A. and Bethuel Heath under the age of 16 years. ..."

The record says the couple was married on Oct. 28, 1848 and had a daughter Frances A. Heath, who was born Aug. 11, 1849. Zilpha was born May 3, 1852 and Rice was born July 29, 1855 and all lived with Elizabeth in Sebec and she supported them, in 1865.

On the "Declaration for Widow's Pension" witnesses were M.G. Howard and one other.

On the "General Affidavit" Charles Dunning, Justice of the Peace, stated: " I know from intimate personal acquaintance with Elizabeth Heath that she is the widow of Bethuel Heath who died in Rebel Prison during the late war, and I know she has not married since his death."

" I, Isaiah S. Gould, of Brownville in the County of Piscataquis and the State of Maine on oath declare and say that I am the identical Isaiah S. Gould who was a private in the Co A. 6th Maine vols and was taken prisoner at Hanover Court House VA in May 28th 1864 and was at Andersonville GA from June to the middle of Sept 1864 and Bethuel Heath of Sebec Maine A private in Co F. of the 3rd Maine Vols was there very sick, with dropsy and scurvy and his ankles were swollen as large as a man's thigh, he the said Heath was lugged out of camp on a stretcher and carried where I do not know. He was not dead then but I did not think he could live but a short time. I got back to my Regt June 9, 1865, having been sent from Andersonville GA to Florence, SC and imprisoned there. Our men, while I was at Andersonville GA had dealt out to them as rations 1 pint corn meal per day, and once a fortnight we had one ration of fresh beef weighing about one half pound and we had a gill cup full of molasses once in every four days - nearly one half of our prisoners died of starvation."

Bethuel died Sept. 20, 1864 of "chronic diarrhea." Elizabeth received her last pension money ($12) on Sept. 4, 1907 because "of death Oct 29, 1907."

Bethuel was the son of Josiah and Maria (Mayo) Heath

God in his wisdom has recalled,
His love has given
And though his body molders here,
The soul is safe in Heaven.
Yet again we hope to meet thee
When my day of life is fled
and in heaven harmony with joy to greet thee
When no farewell tears are shed."

General Notes: Husband - Robert Heath

He is identified in an update by Douglas Richardson to his 1992 article, as appearing on the 1545 subsidy roll for Little Amwell, and is probably the father of Edward. No others Heaths owned property in the 1545 subsidy roll in that locale.

A search of the meagre surviving records revealed nothing about his early life. However in advanced age he was made overseer and called father in law in the will of Thomas Wattes, yeoman, of Ware, dated 20 Jan 1570/1, proved 31 May 1571.

Two years later, Robert Heath served as a witness to the will of John Dyckeson of Ware, dated 30 Apr 1573, proved 21 June 1573. In 1575, William Aldred and Sibil, hiw wife, adn Robert Broune, conveyed three messuages, etc., in Ware, by fine to Robert Heath. No further trace of Robert Heath has been found, and it is assumed he died soon afterwards, intestate. No burial record for him has been found at Ware.

Collarmaker in Little Amwell in the parish of Ware.

In his will, dated 6 march 1592/3 and proved 23 March 1592/3, witnessed by Wilm Nycoil and George Bearstolke (Essex Record Office, Chelmsford), Edward Heath of Ware... "Coilermaker sycke in bodie", asked to be buried in the churchyard of Ware and made bequests as follows:

Elder Isaac Heath and brother William Heath were joined in New England by various relatives. These included their brother in law John Johnson of Roxbury, widower of their sister Mary Heath, and their nephew and niece, Edward Morris of Roxbury, and Elizabeth (Morris)Cartwright of Boston.

Edward Morris and Elizabetn (Morris)Cartwright may have taken another sibling, Isaac Morris, aged 9, who was on the opewell in 1635 in the company of John and arbara Ruggles of Nazing, Essex, probably same as Isaac Morrison baptized at Great Amwell 3 Feb 1625/6. He may have died young as no further record of him.

The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriges, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 724,091 people via interlocking
marriages.

My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.
