General Notes: Husband - Captain Gideon Lowell
1690- was a soldier in the first expedition to Canada.
1692- he was a "cordwainer" (shoemaker).
1706- called a "mariner" and "coaster". Calls himself a "yeoman" in his will of 1748 and when the
will was executed in 1753 he is called "captain".
1718/1/19- purchased 53 acres of land in "Almesbury", MA. It was upland, butting on Powow and
Merrimac Rivers.
1719- moved to Amesbury, MA and settled there at what was called the "Ferry." Tradition states
that he opened a street through his land in Amesbury; built a house for each of his seven sons
and the street was named Lowell St.
1728-29- he and his brother, Samuel, purchased land in Falmouth (now Portland), ME. He never
moved there but he transferred the land to his son Abner.
"Gideon was a sea captain. He built, owned and commanded his vessels...one was a 'sloupe' of 50 or 60 tons burden. He sailed widely and took his wife, Miriam, with him often. Probably some of his children were born while on these voyages. Gideon was a bold and successful voyager; he amassed a considerable fortune. It is probable that in his voyages, the King's revenue was not always considered, nor did he hesitate to run-up aside of and board by force a French or Spanish
craft when opportunity arose."
He owned a wharf near "Ames" wharf at the mouth of the Powow River where he landed his cargoes of "rhum" and "Shugar" from the West Indies -- or rice, resin, and tar from other far places.
WILL OF GIDEON LOWELL (1748)
"I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth my wife, 1 cow and 1 chest with a Drawer at ye bottom marked E.L. and also 1 Lenning Wheele which she Generally useth and also all ye provisions that I have of all sorts whatsoever for her to Have to to hold free and cleare forever.
I give unto said Elizabeth Ye use and Improvement of 1/3 of my Household goods as followeth viz: 1 bed curtains with the bedstead and ye furniture be longing to said bed which is the bed I generally lodge on in the west room of my dwelling house together with so much of the rest of said household goods as shall make out 1/3 part thereof together with ye suller under said house as she shall chose with convenient passing and repassing; and convenience of yard room for laying of wood before ye door and also of Improvement of 1 acre of land and in my field on ye westerly side of ye brook, ye above said cow to be kept winter and summer by my sons that shall enjoy my homestead."
Inventory of Gideon's estate consisted of "Real homestead living about 35 acres with about 4 acres of swamp called Ye Great Swamp and buildings." Amongst items of personal estate was an "old Negro good for £000-000-00!"
Amesbury Union Cemetery in Amesbury, MA:
A very large cemetery, kept in excellent condition. Even the very old part of the cemetery is mowed and carefully trimmed around each stone. The cemetery is located on rolling knolls, dotted with tall evergreen trees, just at the outskirts of town. The poet, John Greenleaf Whittier, is also buried in this cemetery.
There are many Lowells buried here. About the oldest stone, or at least the oldest Lowell stone is that of "Mrs. Mary Lowle, wife of Gideon, Died 1734, aged 63." No stone for Gideon. However, there are wide spaces with no markers or stones and can be assumed that other graves are here.

General Notes: Husband - Benjamin Fifield
Benjamin Fifield, born about 1648 (aged about 52 in 1700). He settled in Hampton Falls. He served on juries 1679, '83, '93; constable '98, '99; selectman '87; representative '97; clerk of company '99. He was killed by Indians 1 Aug 1706 " and a lad his kinsman carried away." (This record may refer to Stephen Fifield, son of William Fifield b. Feb 1, 1651/52.) Adminstration was granted on Benjamin's estate 3 Sept. 1706 to his youngest son, Jonathan. He married 28 Dec 1670, Mary Colcord, who died in Hampton Falls 23 Nov. 1741, aged 93. She was the daughter of Edward Colcord and Ann Wadd of Dover.
As per The American Genealogist. v.15:1, July 1938, p. 219.
The Kingston Saw Mill Benjamin Sr's property is left in eight shares, one of which goes to Daniel Bean. (as per The American Genealogist; v.15, July 1938, page 222)
Benjamin was ambushed by Indians in back of his home when starting for church on a Sunday and killed, aged 60 years. A man of note who served several terms as Provincial Representative to the Legislative Assembly, he belonged to the Militia.

Notes: Marriage
_STATMARRIED
General Notes: Child - Ensign John Fifield
John Fifield born 21 Nov 1671 moved to Kingston. He married Abigail (perhaps a Bean or a Sleeper) having by her his first 2 children. She died and he married (2) about 1709, Martha Andrews, born 25 Dec 1673. She was a daughter of Thomas and Martha (Baker) (Antrim) Andrews and a grand-daughter of Robert Andrews of Ipswich and Rowley, Mass. By her he had hsi next 2 children. She died 12 May 1716 and he married (3) 16 Aug 1716 Mary Webster of Kingston and grandaughter of Thomas Webster and Sarah (Brewer). John lived at Kingston and died there about 1750. He is called Ensign. (The American Genealogist; v.15, page 221)
Settled in Kingston about 1706. He was granted 200 acres of land there on 19 December 1700, and was there in 1725 when Reverend Clark took charge . (as per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation three page 1 of 8 printed out Jul 22, 1999)
General Notes: Child - Jonathan Fifield
Jonathan Fifield married 15 Jan (Libby says July) 1723, Hannah Waite prob. born 17 Jan 1682, daughter of Thomas and Susan (Ayres) of Ipswich. He died without surviving issue. He lived on the Hampton Falls property which he inherited from his father Benjamin. He was guardian of his nephew, Paul Sanborn.Libby says "much trusted with probate business by his relations and by bro-in-law Weare, Judge of Probate." His will was dated Jan 9, 1771 and proved April 30, 1777. By it he left his property, including the Fifield homestead to his " kinsman Jonathan Fifield, Esq. who now lives with me, he paying to my kinsman Jonathan Sanborn son of Paul Sanborn who formerly lived me 5 pounds lawful money."
Brown in his "History of Hampton Falls," gives George FIFIELD as his son, and receiving the FIFIELD estate on Jonathan's death. This theory is shown false by Jonathan's will. Jonathan Jr. nephew of Jonathan and son of Edward rec'd the property and passed it on after two years to George who was his son. Mr Brown in missing these two wills has confused the issue. (As per The American Genealogist v.15, page 223)
General Notes: Child - Joseph Fifield
Joseph Fifield, born 7 Mar 1677, married at Hawke, 24 Apr 1701, Sarah Sherburn (Samuel, Henry of Portsmouth). He lived at Kingston; his will is dated 25 Jul 1757 and probated 6 Jul 1761. (as per The American Genealogist, v.15, page 222)
Joseph was selectman in Kingston in 1725. A notice of his death appeared in the New York Mercury of 7/27/1761 stating that Joseph of Kingston, NH died there June 7, in his 85th year, leaving a wife and 4 children, one daughter deceased. (as per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation three page 2 of 8 printed Jul 22, 1999)
General Notes: Child - Captain Edward Fifield
Edward Fifield born 27 March 1678, married Elizabeth Leavitt, daughter of Moses and Dorothy (Dudley). They lived at Stratham. He is called "Captain " in the records. (as per The American Genealogist, v.15, page 222)
Edward moved to Kingston with brothers John and Joseph, but settled in Strathem in 1708. Edward was Captain of Company No. 13 in Col. Shelburn's Regt. in Her Majesty's Service for many years and a dealer in real estate. He left a will on 16 Feb 1754 in Strathem, Rockingham, NH The will transcribed and annotated by Henry Fifield.

General Notes: Child - Caleb Norwood
As a young man he came from Gloucester, Mass to work in Samuel Donnell's tavern, and in 1708 married the boss's daughter.
Caleb probably did not settle in York. In his will written in 1735, he is of Boston, Innholder, and all propertry he left was in Gloucester. No mention of York in his wills. His son, Gustavus was probably the first Norwood to actually settle in York.
Caleb, when in York, lived on the road leading to Stage Neck, York Harbor, the oldest road in York. Sam Donnell built a tavern and garrison, still standing in 1998.
