0021; EDWARD SPRAGUE (s. John, Ralph, Edward, Tristram) b. in Malden, Mass., 1663. He m. November 14, 1693, Dorothy, dau. of John Lane, by the Rev. Mr. Wigglesworth. He was a miller by trade and owned a corn mill situated on the three mile brook near Ell Pond, and became an important factor in the life of this new and growing community. The power which supplied the mill was secured by raising Spot Pond nine feet by a dam and became the center of strife and cause of lawsuits which have continued to the present generation. He was for many years a tithingman, whose duty it was to watch over the moral welfare of a special charge, preserve order in the meeting house, and enforce the general observance of the Lord's day. He was chosen town treasurer, March 9, 1695-6, which is the first record of a Malden Town treasurer. In 1698 he was constable, was selectman in 1699-1703-1704-1710 and again at the time he died, 1715, on April 14, (one month after the election.) He represented the town in the General Assembly in 1696 and in 1703. Was captain of the Malden militia at the time of his death. Middlesex Probate document No. 15060, a long drawn out affair mentions wife Dorothy Sprague, son William, "farmer", Timothy, "miller", Ebenezer, "miller"; Hezekiah, "blacksmith" and daughters Dorothy, Ann, Jemima, Lydia, and Phoebe. William Sargent of Malden was guardian for Hezekiah during his minority. In 1727 Hezekiah and Ebenezer were both living in Groton. His widow d. March 29, 1727, aged fifty-seven, "and was the only wife of said Sprague."

Sources:
The information here on the early Tuppers (to the generation of Elias Tupper, b. 1715, but with no information on Elias himself) and related families in Massachusetts comes almost entirely from the excellent and extensive Gendex file of Harry Hadaway of Bow, NH (3). He documents well his sources and for completeness I repeat here the source information, noting always that it is cited by him unless I have consulted the reference myself. One of his principal sources is a FTM (Family Tree Maker) CD from the Tupper Family Association. This may be useful to track down some day to check out the original source material for thsi family. Note also that there has been a book published on the Tuppers (11); this also has not been consulted by me.
Unless otherwise noted, information on the next generation, that of Eliakim Tupper, b. 1740 (children of Elias Tupper and Jerusha Sprague), comes almost entirely from the excellent Sprague Family Database of Dick Weber (15).
Unless otherwise noted, Miller's book (1) is the source of my information on the following generation in Nova Scotia.
The above was written by Douglas J. Graham

General Notes: Child - Eliakim Tupper
According to Miller (1), Eliakim emigrated from New England to the "western part of the Province" about 1760 (it would have been with his father Elias, Eliakim being about 20 at the time). He is recorded in Cornwallis in 1761 and was married to Elizabeth Newcomb in Cornwallis in 1762. They moved to Truro in about 1773. The would eventually have a large family of 11 children.
In Truro he built a two story house and kept the only inn. On 16 September 1780 he was appointed Justice of the Peace for Colchester and Pictou Counties. He was also a merchant and a contractor (he finished the inside of the first Truro church). However, his business was not very profitable so with his large family he moved to Middle Stewiacke in about 1792. There he bought the farm of Mathew Johnson, a son-in-law of Eleanor Archibald. He died ther 22 August 1810 and his wife on 10 February 1824.
Elizabeth Newcomb was the daughter of Capt. Eddy Newcomb (1713-1841) and Abigail English (1724-1790 (15) and was born on 12 June 1743 in Lebanon, New London Co. CT. The source (16) has the same birth date but birthplace as NS. Since Elizabeth's brother also married into the Tupper family (see Mary below) it is possible that her parents had also emigrated to Nova Scotia along with some or most of their children (they are not recorded in (1)).

Elisha resided in Clark's Ferry (Tupperville), Anna County, Nova Scotia, Canada, UK.

According to (11): Eliakim was selectman at Sandwich for 12 years and served on the committee "to supply the pulpit" in 1722. He owned much land and was a "shopkeeper". He did not agree with the doctrine preached in the congregation, and on 13 April 1732 was one of two contractors who built a new meeting house for the opponents of the established minister. In 1736 he and his family moved to Lebanon, Connecticut.

[Sprague.FTW]
Born in December of 1665-66 in Malden, Massachusetts. He took the Freeman's Oath on March 22, 1690; Died August 29, 1736. He settled about two miles north of his father when he married, in 1700, Elizabeth, daughter of John and Mary Green. She was born February 3, 1673 and died in 1747. At the time of the death of his father which occurred in 1692, he inherited a homestead out of the original Ell Pond farm, which his grandfather Ralph had purchased of the Indians in 1639. At the time of his death, he bequeathed his two farms to his two sons, Phineas, having the Ell Pond farm and Samuel having the old homestead, which in 1761 he deeded to his brother Phineas. He was a soldier in King Philip's War, Three County Troup, etc. and had the rank of "ensign," a title which clung to him. In 1691 for his eighteen weeks' service as Representative, he received fifty cents per day. His home was situated in what is now Melrose, Massachusetts, near the junction of Florence, Vinton and Maple Streets.

Either their marriage date is wrong or the birth dates of their first three children are wrong or of a different family. As there are no notes as to where Edward G. Sprague came by this information I must assume that these are not true facts. I have used the date of 1690 as their marriage date only to show legitimate children. (HFS IV)

Notes for Richard Sprague:
He was born in England and came to America in his mothers arms in 1628. He was a sea captain of the pink "CONSENT," for Nevis and St. Christopher, November 14, 1664. Succeeded to part of his uncle Richard's estate and foreign shipping trade with Barbados. His first wife, Eunice, was admitted to the church January 23, 1675-6. He made his will October 5, 1703, probated the 18th, devising to five sons of brother John and two sons of Samuel a farm; to daughters of John; to daughter of Samuel; to Winefred Dexter; to Mary Edmands; to the poor of the town; to the ministry; to Mary Everton daughter of brother Phineas; to sister Clark, wife of Timothy of Boston, L50 to the free school of Charlestown; L400 to Harvard College. During the Dutch War 1674, he commanded an armed vessel of 12 guns and cruised in Long Island Sound for the protection of the coastwise trade. In 1680-1, March 16, Captain Richard commanded the 2d train-band of Charlestown. He was Representative of the General Court from Charlestown in 1681 and for several years after. He joined the First Church of Charlestown in 1681. In 1681-2, he recruited as a member of the Artillery Company, and in 1683-4 became first Sargent of the same. He marched with his company into Boston on the memorable 18th of April 1689, and assisted in the revolution against Andros. He was made one of the "Council for the safety of the people and conservation of the peace," (Hutchinson's History of Massachusetts, 3d Edition, Vol. I, Page 340.) which was established for the provisional government of the colony; but when the convention of the colony, subsequently chosen, besides taking temporary measures for the public safety, assumed to institute a new government without the sanction of the crown, he, with other leading citizens, protested and appealed to their majesties, William and Mary, believing the action of the convention unconstitutional and contrary to their oaths of allegiance. He was thereupon deprived of his captaincy, expelled from the House of representatives for " his contemptuous carriage against the government," and arranged before the court for "seditious libel." He was, however, acquitted of the charge and was elected to represent the town in the General Court until his death. Frothingham in a note, (page 203), cites, as an instance of the expense attending funerals, that of Richard Sprague in 1703. "Among the charges, there for gloves L62 12s; and gloves for Bess Negro, 2s 6d; for gloves and hat bands, L3, 2s; for black serge and crape, L2, 16s; for crape to cover the leading staff, halberds, etc., 14s, 1d; for rings, L41, 6s, 1d; for wine. Notes for Samuel Sprague:
His home in Maiden was on the south side of the present Pleasant St., east of the river and not far from the Coytmore mill. He must have been a man having good self control and all of the christian graces according to the following incident for "A youth,Thomas Shepherd struck Samuel Sprague two blows, Sprague did not strike back but said 'What dost thou meane to play the foole? I: am Resolved: I: will: not strike:' although the other dared him with many
Reuiling Speeches." He was appointed town "clarke" of Malden in 1685; selectman many years; took the Freeman's Oath March 22, 1689-90; commissioner to join with other towns in 1687 to make the county tax rate; was Representative and deputy to the General Court from 1681-1686 and from
1688-1693; and was its secretary from 1682 to 1685; lieutenant of the militia in 1685 and is referred to in the early histories as lieutenant. In 1652 he sold to his brother John his share of the Ell Pond estate which his father Ralph had bequeathed to him. His brothkr Richard willed his estate to Samuel's two sons, Samuel and John in 1703. He d. October 3, 1696 in Maiden. His estate was divided for his two sons in 1697.
(Another record) Lt. Samuel Sprague was born before 3 Jun 1632. He died on 3 Oct 1696 in Malden, Middlesex Co.. MA. He was christened in First Church of Boston, Boston, MA. (From "The Sprague's of Malden, Mass.", by George Walter Chamberlain, page 102. Lt. Samuel Sprague. The division of his estate who died intestate was made, October 3, 1696. It mentions his widow Rebecca, eldest son Samuel Sprague, son-in-law John Dexter who married Winifred daughter of the deceased, his son-in-law Ebenezer Austin who married Rebecca, another daughter of the deceased. Witnesses: Phineas Sprague, Samuel Howard and James Converse. Lt. Samuel Sprague with his sister Mary Sprague made choice of his uncle Richard Sprague of Charlestown for his guardian, 7 October 1651. He was fined twenty shillings and costs in 1672, for "Enterteyneing persons in his family at unreasonable times". Mr. Corey tells an interesting story illustrative of Mr. Sprague's character. It appears that Thomas Shepherd called Samuel Sprague "a bays villaine" and said, "when ever I see you mye spirit Rises at you and Wherever I meet with you I shall Remember you". Thomas Mudge, a Malden boy, "did heare Thomas Shepherd: strike Samuel: Sprague two blows". Mr. Sprague struck not back but said: "what dost thou meane to playe the foole:I: am Resolved:I"will: not strike". His horse was impressed for military service in King Philip's War in August 1675. He was chosen Sergeant of the Malden Foot Company in 1682, and was appointed on a committee to repair the meeting house, 28 August 1682. Sergeant Samuel Sprague was ordered by the Selectmen of Malden to be a tithingman in the meeting house on the Lord's Day, alternating first in the gallery and then on the floor below, 27 October 1684. Sergeant Samuel Sprague was appointed Lieutenant of the Malden Foot Company of which his brother John was commissioned Captain, 4 June 1685. He resigned this office in 1689. He wrote a letter to Rev. Michael Wigglesworth dated 22 July, 1687, which letter was extant in 1849. He was commissioned "to joyne with the Townes men to make the country rate, in Aug., 1687". He was appointed on a committee to defend the town of Malden from further demands of Rev. Benjamin Blackman, 21 May, 1688. And was made a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, 22 March, 1689/1690. He was elected a selectman of Malden, 2 March, 1680/1681, and again 8 March, 1686/1687, and was chosen moderator of the town meeting, 28 January, 1694/1695. It is stated in the Ralph Sprague Genealogy that his "house in Malden stood on the south side of the present Pleasant street, east of the river and not far from the Coytmore mill". He was appointed Clerk of the Writs to take account of all Births and Deaths in and to act in said office according to the order of the President and Council. Apparently he served from 1686 to 1693.
