Asa is listed amongst the crew of the Dalton, a merchantman from Newburyport captured in 1777 by the British ship Blenheim. He was transported to the Mill Prision in Plymouth. He made at least one escape attempt but was caught and returned to the prison.

Captured in the Brig Dalton of Newburyport, MA, Journal indicates that from 01 April to 07 May much sickness prevailed among the prisoners on board the Burford, mostly the itch and small pox. During this time the following names are recorded as sent to, or returned from the hospital.

Peter Witham, born in Maine, perhaps New Sharon, about 1770, died in Greenfield, about 1860. He settled on a farm in Greenfield, and resided there the remainder of his life. He married Joanna Whitney, born in Maine in 1771, died in Greenfield in 1847.
"Peter Witham, who came to Industry from the vicinity of Hollowell, in 1788, and settled north of Levi Greenleaf, on Lot 67, was the second settler on the Patent. He was coarse, vulgar and illiterate, and was not properous- possibly in consequence of intemperate habits."
"Esq. Wm Allen says (Hist of Industry, p. 17): "The first settlers in Industry on the patent were joseph Taylor and Peter Witham in 1792, on that part set off to New Sharon, also at the same time Nathaniel Chapman, who was a Revolutionary soldier." Documentary evidence in the State House in Massachusetts shows that Peter Witham came in 1788, Taylor in 1799, eleven years later, and that Mr. Chapman did not settle in town until 1801. These same records show Levi Greenleaf to have been the first settler in town."

Stephen 3 Marden signed the 1724 petition (but not those of 1721 or 1725) for separation of Rye.

Selectman Rye, and held many town offices for 26yrs. He was a cordwainer. He lived near Odiorne's at Little harbor and ran a ferry to Great island.

An old newspaper note says he was Town Clerk of Rye, and subsequently every year until his death, 1766, twenty-five years in all. He was a member of the Loan of 25,000lbs to the tune of 25lbs and was a grantee of Rye gate, Vt. on Sep. 8, 1763. He signed the Road Lottery Petition of 1764 .." Note, however, that Stephen must have been lining in 1770 when he deeded land to his son Benjamin Marden Jr. In Sep 1770 Stephen witnessed his bro. James-3 will.
I Stephen Marden of Rye Husbandman for .. five hundred pounds to me .. paid by my son Benjamin Marden Jr. of Rye .. yeoman .. sell .. unto the said Benjamin Marden Jr. .. Sundry Pieces of land & Marsh .. in Rye ..one piece where my house stands being (14+ac) Bd'd Sly & wly on the Hway only on land of Stephen Lang & e'ly on land of Ensign James Marden, Also (20ac) on So. side of Hway - Bd'd with land of Joshua Rand on the W. and land of James Marden on the Se'ly end & nely side, also all the Salt Marsh in rye with all my Bldgs. on said land with all my personal Est. wheresoever ..not otherwise disposed of before the date 6 July 1770. Rec'd 20 June 1772. Wm Marden was a witness to the deed. Note that this could indicate the Stephen d.bet.1770 & 1772. He was d. by 1777.

The mar. March 17, 1762 of Daniel & Abigail 4 (Marden) Philbrick was performed by Rev. John Tucke in Epsom, N.H. She might have been m. from her sis, Hannah 4 (Marden) Dolbeer's home? Could this indicate that their mo. Charity was d. and that the 1757 mar. was of their fa. Stephen-3 to a 2nd wife? Might Stephen of Candia be a ch. of that 2nd mar.?
General Notes: Child - Benjamin Marden
This Benjamin Marden was consistently called Benjamin Marden Jr. in order to distinguish him in local rec. from Benjamin3-21 Marden (son of William2- & Dorcas) who was b. Rye 1727. The latter was d. bef. 1790 so this Benjamin had by then become the senior Benjamin Marden in Rey. Benjamin4-26 lived on the Solomon dowst farm which was occupied (1903) at the time Parsons wrote his Hist. of Rye by Samuel6-120 Marden & his son-in-law Adams E. Drake.

Dea. John 5 Marden says:
My father died being killed by the fall of a tree in the town of New Hampton in the county of Strafford, N.H. on the 19th day of June 1781 and was buried at Centre harbor at the head of the Winnippasagee lake, about 60 miles from his home in Chester, N.H. He was about 44 years of age. In 1790 Josiah my oldest brother moved his mother Elizabeth and the younger part of the family to Canterbury two miles north of Shaker Village where she spent the remainder of her days in comfortable circumstances.
Dea. John5 of Palermo, Me. tells of the widow's hardships in raising her family. It was during the rev. and even in the best of conditions life was difficult.
When Stephen was killed he left his wife, & large fam. of ch. A posthumous son was b. in Sep. 1781 to the widow Elizabeth WEBSTER Marden.
Sephen Marden had served at fort William and henry in garrisoning the Fort May-Oct. 1757 during the last of the French and Indian Wars. he went in a company sent from Chester, from the part of Old Chester called Freetown. Among A.M. Goodwin papers at the Univ. of Me. Lib. is an old paper saying that Stephen Marden was among the N.H. soldiers fortunate enough to escape the massacre at Fort William and Henry in 1757 when the surrendering British and American soldiers were set upon by the Indians whom Montcalm could not control. There were c. 200 N.H. men there and about 80 of them were killed.

The father was a school teacher in Missouri for many years, afterward ran a canal-boat and subsequently engaged in merchandising in Peoria. Later he moved to Ft. Snelling, Minn., where he was engaged in business as a sutler for four years. For three terms he served as a member of the Territorial Legislature. In 1853 he went to Ft. Ridgely, where he remained until 1867, when the fort was abandoned. He then engaged in manufacturing and merchandising until 1889, when he removed to Winona, where he has since made his home. He served with the citizen soldiery during the Indian War at Ft. Ridgely, where, in connection with J. C. Ramsey, he commanded the defensive forces. He is one of the pioneers of the state, and belongs to the Old Settlers'Association of Minnesota. He belongs to the Masonic fraternity and to the Odd Fellows' society, and at St. Peter he was President of the School Board. He also served as Alderman and Mayor, and in 1883 was a member of the Legislature. He is recognized as one of the prominent citizens of this state, and is widely and favorably known.

The maternal grandfather, Urban B. Auskau Lange, was a native of Copenhagen, Denmark, and came to America about 1828, locating in Philadelphia. He was a practical watch-maker, surveyor and inventor. Removing to Illinois, he located near Quincy about 1839, and there died in 1858, at the age of seventy. He was a great hunter, taking much delight in that sport.

Frank Randall was reared in St. Peter, Minn., and after acquiring his early education in its public schools he entered St. John's College, of Prairie du Chien, Wis. He followed farming from the age of eighteen until twenty-three, after which he engaged in teaching school for some years. At length he determined to enter the legal profession, and in 1875 began reading law with G. S. Ives, of St. Peter. In 1880 he was admitted to the Bar, and immediately opened an office at Tracy, Minn.< where he continued practice for a year. The succeeding five years were passed in New Ulm, where he did a good business, and in 1885 became to Winona, and formed a partnership with Mr. Tawney, the connection continuing for five years. In 1893 he was joined by his brother, Richard A., and they now do business under the firm name of Randall & Randall.
On the 3d of May, 1886, was celebrated the marriage of Frank Randall and Miss Winona E. Pierce, daughter of Z. B. and Mary E. (Ross) Pierce. Three children have been born to them: Hortense, Cotter and Mary. Mr. Randall is a member of the Catholic Church, and in politics is a Democrat. In November, 1892, he was elected to the office of County Attorney, which position he is now filling in a creditable and acceptable manner. At the early age of twenty years he was appointed County Superintendent of Schools of Nicollet County, and was elected to that office in 1877. He has taken an active interest in educational affairs, aided in building the large school in Tracy, and was a member of the board when the New Ulm school was built. The best interests of the community ever find in him a friend, and the county finds in him a valued citizen and worthy official. At the Bar his ability is also recognized.
