1. FOLLETT - MONTGOMERY, FOLLETT - CADY papers from Bonnie Moody:
"Diantha Noble Montgomery was born October 18, 1804 (or 06) at Harpersfield, NewYork. This is where her descendents say she was born, but it is possible she was born in Ohio. Her father was Thomas Montgomery. We know that Diantha was in Geauga County Ohio on June 19,1824, as this is the day she and Ashley were married in this same military Reserve. They were married by a man named Rev. Jonathan Leslie .
Their first three children, Edwin, Eliphalet and Simmons, were born while they lived at Madison, Geauga County, Ohio. After the birth of Simmon in 1829, they moved to Berrien County , Michigan near Port Sheldon. Ashley was a millwright, and this accounted for the family moving a great deal. Ashley would take a crew of men in the woods, cut and saw the lumber, then mix the cement for a foundation and complete the contract of building a mill. At Port Sheldon he built a mill, establishing the town not far from Michigan City. In 1837, he moved to Berrien County area to build still another mill. There were many Indian tribes around him, some friendly, some not. During his absences, Diantha did all the work with the help of a thirteen year old son. They had five sons and three daughters that reached adulthood. One more move Ashley made to Beetown, Wisconsin. Also during his many moves in the years before 1847, he homesteaded and secured a tract of wild land in Clayton, Iowa. Ashley died at Beetown , Wisconsin, at only 49 on June 3,1847.
Ashley and Diantha Follett had 10 children: Edwin, Eliphalet, Simmons, Thomas, Mary, Mary Eliza, Elbridge, Sarah, Otis, and Maude.
Diantha had know (sic) sorrow with the loss of her fifth child, Mary, who died in infancy . Now again, she knew sorrow with the loss of her husband. And about this same time her last child, Maude was born and died shortly. Picking up the pieces and carrying on courageously , she moved back to Clayton County, Iowa, where earlier she and Ashley had homesteaded. Here with the help her second son, Eliphalet, (Edwin had already gone out on his own) she raised her family. When Eliphalet married, Diantha bought a home in Elgin, Iowa, and moved there . But sorrow was still to come to Diantha with the onset of the Civil War. On June 23, 1862 , Eliphalet enlisted, along with his brothers Elbridge and Thomas; enlisting, too, were his two brothers-in-law, Charles Grant, husband of Sarah Follett, and Elisha Downie, husband of Mary Eliza Follett. They all belonged in the same company, Co. H, 38th Iowa Inf; Eliphalet the Captain and Elisha Downie the color-bearer. So on this day, June 23,1862, they marched away, with Elisha carrying the flag. But two of the five didn't return. Sargent (sic) Elbridge, who had transferred to Co. F, 3rd Iowa Inf., was wounded and died at the army hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He is buried in the National Cemetery, Jefferson, Missouri. Charles Grant was also killed and his body was returned to Elkader for burial. He left a widow and young daughter, Eliza. (See A. below)
During the war, Diantha's daughter, Mary Eliz Downie with her three children and unborn son, came to Elgin to live with Diantha; as did Daughter Sarah Grant and Elza (sic). This made Diantha's home crowded and Mary Eliza soon tired of this arrangement, so she used her husband's bounty money to buy a home for herself and family in the same town of Elgin, Iowa.
....In 1879 Eliphalet and all his family with the exception of his eldest son John, moved to California. This left Diantha pretty much without family so she decided to move to California. She made a trip to Marshall, Minn., to see Mary Eliza fearing that she would not see her again. Elisha, husband of Mary Eliza promised that he would bring Mary Eliza to see her mother. But travel in those days was not easy and Diantha never saw her daughter again. Diantha moved to Modoc County, near Willow Ranch. Eliphalet lived in nearby New Pine Creek, Ore. In July 1881, through a lawyer, D. H. Talbot of Sioux City, Iowa, Diantha applied for a pension through the death of her son, Elbridge Winslow Gerry Follett in the Civil War. On these papers she spelled her name as 'Dyantha.' She stated she was married to Ashley, father of Elbridge, at Madison, Geauga County, Ohio June 19, 1824 by Leslie. Father dying in Beetown, Wis., Grant County, June 3, 1846. She received $12.00 a month pension until September 7 , 1897, and it was cancelled October 1, 1897. Diantha was a very religious person. She lived out her years at Willow Ranch, living with daughter Sarah, son Thomas and son Eliphalet . She died October 15, 1897, and is buried in the family plot at New Pine Creek, Oregon. So Diantha traversed the width of the United States in her pursuit of, life, liberty and happiness."
A. While it makes a good story that they all marched off together with the flag waving on June 23, 1862, in fact, Charles M. Grant and Eldridge W. G. Follett enlisted as Privates on May 20, 1861; Eliphalet Follett enlisted on July 23, 1862 as a Captain; Elisha B. Downie enlisted as a Private on August 5, 1862; and Thomas M. Follett enlisted as a Private on August 10, 1862. Charles M. Grant was NOT killed, he was mustered out on June 18, 1864, at Davenport, Iowa: "Roster & Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion"

1. Captain Eliphalet Follett. As taken word for word from the Centennial History of Oregon - 1811 - 1912.
Captain Eliphalet Follett. While New Pine Creek is one of the recently established towns of Lake County, its citizenship includes Captain Eliphalet Follett, one of the venerable residents of this part of the state. He was born in what is Lake County but is now Geauga County,Ohio, February 2, 1828, a son of Ashley and Diantha (Montgomery) Follett, the former born in Massachusetts in 1798 and the latter in New York in 1808. They were pioneer residents of Northeastern Ohio, living in thereserve where they were married. The father was a millwright by tradeand followed his chosen occupation when Eastern Ohio was almost anunbroken wilderness. About 1835 the family removed to SouthwesternMichigan, settling at Port Sheldon, where Mr. Follett built a mill, establishing the town not far from Michigan City. He afterward removedto Chicago, Illinois, and later to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Hesubsequently resided in Iowa and in 1838 went to Chippewa, Wisconsin, then he removed once more to the Menominee River and then back toClaytontown County, Iowa. Again, however, he took up his abode inWisconsin in 1844 remaining for four years, after which, he returned toIowa. There he secured a tract of wild land and became actively engagedin farming. The Mother became a widow in 1847.
Captain Eliphalet Follett was the second of seven children, and as theoldest son was away from home, the care of the family devolved upon himand he continued to work on the old homestead until he attained hismajority, when he married. He afterward entered the field of generalmerchandising at Elkader, Clayton County, Iowa, but eventually removed toElgin, Fayette County, that state, where he conducted a store from 1853until 1862. Following the outbreak of the Civil War his patriotic spiritwas aroused, feeling that his first duty was to his country, he enlistedon the 23rd of July, 1862, as Captain of Company H, Thirty-eighth IowaInfantry. He served with that command until January 1, 1865, when he washonorably discharged by reason of the consolidation of his regiment withthe Thirty-fourth of Iowa. He was on duty with the Thirteenth Army Corpsbut was detached and served on the Mississippi until the surrender ofVicksburg. He was then sent to the convalescent camp at Carrollton,Louisiana, but later participated in the capture of Brownsville, Texas, where the troops remained for nine months as an army of observation. Atthe close of that period, they returned to New Orleans and were orderedto Mobile Bay, seventeen days spent in the capture of Fort Morgan. Fromthat point, the troops proceeded to Morganza, Louisiana, and to Floridaand participated in the battle of Fort Blakely. They also assisted inthe capture of the steamer Alabama and later went to Huston, Texas. Themost important battle of the war in which Captain Follett participatedwas that at Vicksburg.
Whe the war was over, he returned to Iowa, and engaged in railroading formore than two years, but he also owned a farm of two hundred and seventyacres there and gave some of his time to the supervision of the farm.
In 1876, he went to Yolo County, California, and in 1879 removed toWIllowranch, Modoc County, that state, seven miles south of Pine Creek,Oregon. In 1881, he suffered a stroke of paralysis and since that timehas engaged in merchandising, being identified with business interests inNew Pine Creek since 1893. He has a well appointed store and he remainsa factor in the business circles although many men his age have longsince put aside commercial or industrial cares to spend the evening oflife quietly and without any business activities to claim their attention.
Captain Follett has been married twice. On the 7th of February, 1847, inIowa, he wedded Christena Downie, a native of Canada, who was born June7, 1833, and died in New Pine Creek in November, 1904. Their childrenwere seven in number: John A., living in Lyon County, Iowa; Blanch, whois the widow of Columbus Cannon and resides in New Pine Creek; Josephine, who is the widow of L.C. Button and makes her home in Sacramento,California; A.E. of New Pine Creek; Ernest B. of Benton County, Orgeon;E.W.G. of New Pine Creek; and Sadie L., wife of Jospeh L. Hampton ofPaisley, Oregon. On the 17th of June, 1910, Captain Follett was marriedto Mrs. Jane L. (Worthington) Mulkey, who had been a widow for fourteenyears. She was born in Davidson County, North Carolina, April 29, 1835and when five years of age came to Missouri with her parents, Brooks andHannah (Green) Worthington, who were natives of North Carolina but diedin Missouri where her father followed farming. In early womanhood, JaneWorthington became the wife of Johnson Mulkey and they removed toCalifornia where the latter's death occurred April 21, 1895, when he hadreached the age of sixty-five years, two months and eight days. Theywere the parents of four sons and four daughters of whom six are living.
For many years, Captain Follett has been a stawart Republican but hisfirst vote was cast in 1849 in support of the Democratic candidate. Hevoted in 1856 for Fremont and for each presidential candidate for theRepublican Party since that time. He has served as the Justice of thePeace and in other local offices and for seven years was postmaster ofNew Pine Creek. For thirty-five years, he has been a Master Mason andsince 1855 has been an Odd Fellow, having in that year joined the lodgeat West Union, Fayette County, Iowa. At the time of the Civil War everyone of its members enlisted for service at the front, whereby the lodgewas broken up, and after the war, he aided the Commander of the Grandlodge at Elgin, Iowa. He was at one time the Commander of the Grand ArmyPost at New Pine Creek but there is no organization here, now, as thereare not enough members to support it. His religious faith is that of theMethodist Episcopal Church. Captain Follett is remarkably active for oneof his years, for, although he has passed the eighty-fourth milestone onlife's journey, he is in business and in spirit and interest seems manyyears younger. He keeps in touch with the progress of the world andthroughout his life he has actively figured in projects and movementswhich were of value in matters of citizenship and as factors in theattainment of material success. He has ever been true and loyal to theold flag as when he followed the stars and stripes upon Southernbattlefields.
