On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:
..."John Ross was the son of Alexander Ross and came with two brothers to Chebeague where they settled. "
"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart pp. 110 &132. The chart notes: "he with his sons John & Walter, shipwecked on Graves Ledges off Boston Harbor - frozen in the rigging."
Another slightly more detailed account states:
"In another tragedy in the winter sea, ocean spray froze on the masts and decks of a Chebeague Stone Sloop outside Boston Harbor. Tons of ice weighed her down till she became helpless in the breaking, freezing seas. Capt. John Ross and his two sons, John and Walter, were found aboard, frozen to death and encased in ice, on the rigging."
His widow was living with her son-in-law at the time of the 1860 census, so John was presumably dead by then.

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart pp.100 &132, identify her as wife of William Jackson Curit. He is the only husband listed for her. The chart on p. 106 states that Andrew Jackson Hamilton married Pamela Ross, but does not give her parents. This is only speculation, but perhaps W.J. Curit died, then Pamela married A.J. Hamilton. The fact that Pamela's mother is listed in A.J. Hamilton's household in the 1860 census is strong evidence for the marriage of A.J. Hamilton to Pamela. However, in that same 1860 census, Pamela is not listed. Instead there is a 26 year old Cornelia. The only explaination that I can think of for this is that Pamela must have died prior to 1860 and A.J. Hamilton had remarried by then.

cook on stone sloops at 17. Mrs. Eric Kelly interviewed Martin a few years
before his death and he gave her a great deal of stone sloop information
which is source material in this book. Martin worked for Hamilton & Co. on
the Stone Wharf. "Drove the delivery wagon for nine years and never took a
vacation." When Martin got married there was a housing shortage on
Chebeague - he and his wife started housekeeping in two front rooms of
"Aunt Eleanor's" house (Simeon Hamilton's #1) - south road at the center."

Louisa Lee Schuyler, was born on October 26, 1837, the second of three children. She grew up "in a home of unpretentious wealth," spending vacations at her grandfather James Alexander Hamilton's country home near Dobbs Ferry. At the age of twenty-three, she made her first inroads into what would later be called welfare work, as a volunteer teacher for the Children's Aid Society. With the outbreak of the Civil War, she helped organize the Woman's Central Relief Association, the parent body of the United States Sanitary Commission, under the directorship of the famed Unitarian clergyman, Henry W. Bellows. Entering avidly into this work, Louisa so exhausted herself that she spent several years after the war recuperating in Europe and Egypt. Upon her return to New York in 1871, she again took up the challenge of social work, organizing the State Charities Aid Association, which encouraged private citizens to inspect public institutions. The tide of public sentiment fostered by this plan was instrumental in establishing the nation's first nurses' training school at Bellvue Hospital in 1874. Miss Schuyler championed the cause of humane care of the insane, and in 1890, arranged for the transfer of insane inmates from county almshouses to state hospitals. In later years she worked in the cause of blindness prevention, but ironically became blind herself at the end of her long life. Characterized as a woman who had "the mind of a lawyer and the willpower of a captain of industry," she died at her home in New York City on October 10, 1926, nearly eighty-nine years old.

Louisa Lee Schuyler, was born on October 26, 1837, the second of three children. She grew up "in a home of unpretentious wealth," spending vacations at her grandfather James Alexander Hamilton's country home near Dobbs Ferry. At the age of twenty-three, she made her first inroads into what would later be called welfare work, as a volunteer teacher for the Children's Aid Society. With the outbreak of the Civil War, she helped organize the Woman's Central Relief Association, the parent body of the United States Sanitary Commission, under the directorship of the famed Unitarian clergyman, Henry W. Bellows. Entering avidly into this work, Louisa so exhausted herself that she spent several years after the war recuperating in Europe and Egypt. Upon her return to New York in 1871, she again took up the challenge of social work, organizing the State Charities Aid Association, which encouraged private citizens to inspect public institutions. The tide of public sentiment fostered by this plan was instrumental in establishing the nation's first nurses' training school at Bellvue Hospital in 1874. Miss Schuyler championed the cause of humane care of the insane, and in 1890, arranged for the transfer of insane inmates from county almshouses to state hospitals. In later years she worked in the cause of blindness prevention, but ironically became blind herself at the end of her long life. Characterized as a woman who had "the mind of a lawyer and the willpower of a captain of industry," she died at her home in New York City on October 10, 1926, nearly eighty-nine years old.

. Harley Ray Miller, Sr.
. July 18, 1912Ê-ÊJuly 22, 2004
. SALEM - Harley was born in Salina, Okla. He lived in Colorado and Texas before his family resettled in Richmond, Ray Co., Missouri, the ancestral home. The family moved to Twin Falls, Idaho during HarleyÕs teen years where he graduated from high school in 1931. From there they moved to Wallowa, Ore. and finally to Salem in 1935, where he eventually met and married his wife of 63 years.
. Harley and Helen attended the First Christian Church in Salem for many decades. Harley worked as a carpenter for Morrow Construction until his 60th year and then worked as an agent at Rawlins Real Estate until he retired. Harley was especially proud of his service as a marine during WWII. Enlisting at 28 years of age, he was known as ÔPopsÕ in the barracks.
. Helen Constance Hamilton died on June 24, 2003.
Harley is survived by his three sons, Brian Miller of Corbett, and Harley, Jr. and Robert Miller of Salem. His family includes four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. His brother-in-law, Gordon Hamilton and his niece, Shirley McCormack also mourn his passing.
. Contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 685 Marion St. N.E., Salem, OR 97301 or Willamette Valley Hospice, 1015 3rd St. N.W., Salem, OR 97304.
. A memorial service will be arranged later in the summer. Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home.

James Alexander Hamilton was born in New York, April 14, 1788, the third son of Alexander (1755-1804) and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. After graduating from Columbia College in 1805, he studied for the law, earning admittance to the New York bar in 1809. In the following year, Hamilton established a law practice in Hudson, New York, and in October, 1810, married Mary, the daughter of Robert Morris and granddaughter of former New York Chief Justice, Richard Morris. Following military service in the War of 1812, Hamilton returned to private law practice with vigor. An easy-mannered, slick-talking and ambitious man, he jockeyed for political position, slowly working his way into the most influential Democratic circles of the day, developing a particularly close professional relationship with Martin Van Buren. For several years, Hamilton co-published the New York American, a newspaper reflecting Clintonian Democrat sympathies. As part of Andrew Jackson's "so-called Appointing Council" in 1829, he helped to secure Martin Van Buren's appointment as Secretary of State, but soon had a falling out with the administration. Although he had had a hand in choosing Jackson's cabinet, he became its most caustic critic, later calling it "the most unintellectual and uneducated cabinet we ever had." Nevertheless, over Van Buren's protests, Jackson appointed Hamilton as District Attorney for the Southern District of New York, an office which he resigned in 1833. A staunch defender of his father's conservative fiscal policies, Hamilton prepared a plan for a bank operated by the Treasury Department. Although Jackson had requested the plan, it was never adopted. The demise of the Bank of the United States and the Panic of 1837 changed Hamilton's political leanings, and in 1840 he supported Harrison, and from that time forward, was identified with the Whig and, later, the Republican Parties. Although he withdrew from direct political activity after 1833, Hamilton continued to act as informal adviser to many politicians. An ardent nationalist, he disapproved of abolition on the grounds that the Constitution protected slavery. At every war between 1833 and 1861 he offered his services to his country, even urging emancipation as a military measure during the Civil War. He published several pamphlets during his lifetime and a lengthy autobiography appeared in 1869. Hamilton died in New York City at the age of ninety on September 24, 1878. George Lee Schuyler, son of Philip Jeremiah (b. 1768) and Mary Ann Sawyer Schuyler, was born at Rhinebeck, New York, on June 9, 1811, the youngest of eight children. He grew up in comfortable, if not lavish circumstances, and graduated from Columbia College. He married twice, first to Eliza Hamilton, the daughter of his cousin James Alexander Hamilton, by whom he had three children: Philip, Louisa Lee (1837-1926) and Georgina (1840-1923). After his wife in 1863, he married her younger sister, Mary Morris Hamilton (b. 1828). A civil engineer by profession, he worked with his half-brother Robert in New York City for several years. A yachtsman by avocation, he was one of the organizers in 1844 of the New York Yacht Club and participated in the team which captured the America's Cup trophy in England, 1851. As the last surviving member of this team, he donated the cup to the New York Yacht Club in 1887. In the 1850s, Schuyler was known to have his patriot grandfather's papers at his New York City office, and in 1867 he published Correspondence & Remarks upon Bancroft's History of the Northern Campaign of 1777, and the Character of Major-General Philip Schuyler in an attempt to rehabilitate Schuyler's military career from Bancroft's aspersions. George L. Schuyler died of a heart attack July 31, 1890, in his stateroom aboard Elbridge T. Gerry's steam yacht Electra moored at Newport, Rhode Island. His three children all survived him. George Schuyler's daughter, Louisa Lee Schuyler, was born on October 26, 1837, the second of three children. She grew up "in a home of unpretentious wealth," spending vacations at her grandfather James Alexander Hamilton's country home near Dobbs Ferry. At the age of twenty-three, she made her first inroads into what would later be called welfare work, as a volunteer teacher for the Children's Aid Society. With the outbreak of the Civil War, she helped organize the Woman's Central Relief Association, the parent body of the United States Sanitary Commission, under the directorship of the famed Unitarian clergyman, Henry W. Bellows. Entering avidly into this work, Louisa so exhausted herself that she spent several years after the war recuperating in Europe and Egypt. Upon her return to New York in 1871, she again took up the challenge of social work, organizing the State Charities Aid Association, which encouraged private citizens to inspect public institutions. The tide of public sentiment fostered by this plan was instrumental in establishing the nation's first nurses' training school at Bellvue Hospital in 1874. Miss Schuyler championed the cause of humane care of the insane, and in 1890, arranged for the transfer of insane inmates from county almshouses to state hospitals. In later years she worked in the cause of blindness prevention, but ironically became blind herself at the end of her long life. Characterized as a woman who had "the mind of a lawyer and the willpower of a captain of industry," she died at her home in New York City on October 10, 1926, nearly eighty-nine years old.

James A. Hamilton, son of Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury under Washington, died on Tuesday last at "Nevis," the old Hamilton mansion on the Hudson, near Irvington, at the advanced age of 91 years. James A. Hamilton was born in the year 1788, while his father was engaged in the Constitutional Convention, and was 16 years of age by the date of the famous encounter with Aaron Burr. Two years previous his elder brother, a young man of 20 had lost his life in a duel. The second son, John C. Hamilton, wrote the life of his father in two volumes. The name of the deceased, James A., is familiar in the literary world, as the author of a work, published in 1870, entitled " Hamilton's Conduct as Secretary of the Treasury Findicated in which considerable documentary evidence of importance is adduced in defense of his father's financial policy. He married a grand-daughter of Robert Morris, of Revolutionary fame, and retired from active life after the Administration of Andrew Jackson, of whom he had preserved many striking reminisces. Nearly 50 years ago he built the mansion on the Hudson, a mile from the busy village of Irvington. It is a strikingly simple Greek structure, such as was considered exactly the thing in those days having five weather-beaten Doric columns on either front, the one colonnade overlooking the Hudson, the other facing a shaded country road embowered in forest trees. The house was originally brown, but, not having been painted for years, has something grim and stern about it. At the rear a noisy little brook purls through a deep, wooded ravine, winding through the grass like a strain of music. The Hamilton mansion was famous in New York society 40 years ago and had been the scene of many a distinguished gathering. I t is now occupied by by a son of the deceased, a gentleman having the strong, thick-set physique of the Morrises, rather then the slender form of the Hamiltons, with the Greek nose, dashed with Galic nervousness and decision, and the sensitive mouth of that historic family. Mr. Hamilton retained the use of his intelectual faculties until within the last tour or five years. His death was consequently not an unexpected stroke, but those who knew him will miss an old man , a picturesque and rambling reminiscences of society and politics in old times. He remembered Jackson, and all about the great Mrs Eaton scandal, and the ins and outs and windings of Martin Van Buren's political career. He had seen President Washington and knew all the mythology of the heroes of the Revolution by heart. He was familiar with the inner events of New York society as it was 60 years ago. During the last half a century he had lived the life of a retired gentlemen with scarcely an event of importance to disturb the recollections of youth.
The funeral is announced to take place tomorrow, and carriages will be in waiting at the depot to receive friends and relatives and take them to Nevis, so named after the island where his father was born.

The important thing is that James Monroe at the age of 21 was set up in business on the Hamilton Landing, his father buying out the general store of Samuel Ross and hiring Samuel to teach James Monroe how to run it. This store was Hamilton & Co. which in the 1870s built the stone wharf. Later Stephen Bennett Hamilton went into the business in place of Samuel Ross, and still later James Monroe's son Clinton entered the business and bought out Stephen Bennett. James Monroe was also in real estate at Sunset Landing with his brother-in-law Rufus Soule - they built that wharf. James Monroe was a wealthy man at one time and owned considerable land on Chebeague and neighboring islands. His home burned with old Hillcrest." He was owner of the stone sloops "M.D. Sawyer" (p. 82) 1889 - 1890 and the "Rocky Mountain" (p.89) 1882-1891. He also, from 1882 to 1896, owned the Schooner Bianca. Page 72 tells: "This was not a stone sloop - instead a small freighter for Hamilton & Company, but she was always off the home port, there to welcome the stone sloops when they came home to the stone wharf or Hamilton landing."

Page 113 states: "He owned Eastern Point and built the Guilliam's house, which was lived in later by his son, John F. Hamilton. He was a man of wealth giving his sons stone sloops and setting his son James Monroe up in business at Hamilton Landing - Hamilton & Co." Page 91 identifies him as owner of the stone sloop "Susan Jane", which hailed from Casco Bay till 1878.
The 1860 census for Cumberland, Cumberland Co., Maine, Chebeague Island (Ancestry.com image 40 of 44), lists John Hamilton, age 55, farmer, real estate valued at $1200, personal estate valued at $1000, he & entire household born in Maine.

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949) chart pp. 96 & 114. Page 119 tells us
. "He owned 50 acres, which he bought in 1835 - it included the present downtown - Mansfield's, post Office, Leonard's, Martha's, the Hall and down to the shore. His first house is the old house behind Leonard's store and he built #1 [i.e. house #1 pictured at the front of the book], now owned by the Eric Kelley's. This later house was for many years the home of his second wife, Aunt Eleanor" who was post mistess for many years. Captain Simeon owned Bates Island at one time." Page 76 states that he owned the stone sloop "Granite", which hailed from Casco bay before thhe 1860s. Page 81 states "SLOOP LEADER - Built in 1831. Its bones are in the creek below the golf course, off Cleave's Wharf, Great Cheabague ... The captains: Simeon Hamilton Sr. took his son Stephen Bennett Hamilton stone slooping on board the Leader in 1855 - he was 14 years old. Later at 21, Stephen bought an interest in the Leader and ferried stone for 2 years." Page 67 identifies Captain Simeon Hamilton Jr. as master of the stone sloop "Active" and Simeon Hamilton [Sr.] as 1/16 owner.

Sd Elizabeth also died without any possession of the same. Now the intention of this deed is to point out the boundaries of sd 100 acres, and to secure the same to sd Richard Wade (who is the son and lawful heir of sd Elizabeth), agreeable to the afd will, and accordingly, sd Burditt Hamilton, for 4 shillings and 6 pence sterling to him in hand paid by sd Richard Wade and for divers other good causes, has given to sd Richard Wade, 100 acres of land, being part of Burditts Rest in CC, Durham Parish, on the south side of Burditts Cr, containing and laid out for about 100 acres. On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Main e, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I recei ved a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter s he identified John and Betty (Chandler) as parents of Ambrose Hamilton. Tinker is the source for the genealogies used in "Stone Sloops of Chebeague", cited ne xt. "Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart p. 106, has the note; "he died o n Chebeague 1767, she in 1772. He came to this counrty in 1733, lived at Walnut Hill". The Sumpter/Hathaway Family Tree on ancestry.com states that he was bo rn in Scotland. No source cited.

In 1932 she was towed to Duxbury, Massachusetts where she sank iin 1934. Her bones are in the shallows of Duxbury Bay off Duxbury Beach.

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart pp. 114 & 136. Page 113 states: "He and his cousin were given stone sloops by their grandfather James. The important thing is that James Monroe at the age of 21 was set up in business on the Hamilton Landing, his father buying out the general store of Samuel Ross and hiring Samuel to teach James Monroe how to run it. This store was Hamilton & Co. which in the 1870s built the stone wharf. Later Stephen Bennett Hamilton went into the business in place of Samuel Ross, and still later James Monroe's son Clinton entered the business and bought out Stephen Bennett. James Monroe was also in real estate at Sunset Landing with his brother-in-law Rufus Soule - they built that wharf. James Monroe was a wealthy man at one time and owned considerable land on Chebeague and neighboring islands. His home burned with old Hillcrest." He was owner of the stone sloops "M.D. Sawyer" (p. 82) 1889 - 1890 and the "Rocky Mountain" (p.89) 1882-1891. He also, from 1882 to 1896, owned the Schooner Bianca. "Research of D.G. Weymouth" (www.weymouthtech.com/genealogy), identifies the wife of John Ross Hamilton as "Statira Hamilton", daughter of Solomon Sawyer Hamilton & Mary Jane Littlefield. Gives vital statistics. Birth date is given as 7 NOV 1839.
My conclusion is that she was almost certainly STATIRA LITTLEFIELD HAMILTON, her middle name being the namesake of her mother's maiden name.
Note that either the birthdate for Statira (7 NOV 1839) or for her brother Ruel (15 DEC 1839) must be wrong. A woman can't bear two children 5 weeks apart!

."On Statira and Ruel Hamilton, based on 1850-1860 Census records, it would seem she was born closer to 1838 and he closer to 1840. The 1839 years in birth dates may be due to "approximations", but the day/month combinations may still be accurate.. just in the wrong years.
. By logistical analysis, her birthdate is most likely 07-Nov-1838 (possibly 1837, based on lateness in year AND the probability of a mistranscription of 1837 as 1839. Believe the 15-Dec-1839 date for Ruel is correct.
. If entering into my database, given the census information paired with the website info, I would list Ruel as born 15-Dec-1839, and Statira as 07-Nov- 1837/38. Just to be on the safe side."

states: "He was a resident of Cumberland. In his youth he was on the
[stone] sloop A.L Hamilton under his uncle Lorenzo Hamilton and he worked
on the 'mud digger' Plymouth Rock owned by his uncle, Robert Hamilton, Jr."
. A quaint story is told on page 21 beneath a sketch titled "A gull's eye
view of the 4th of July parade in 1866" to wit: "Our inspiration for this
sketch was a story told by Bea Bowen - It was just after the close of the
Civil War - the 4th of July, 1866 - a big celebration was underway on
Chebeague. It was a very special day for a boy, aged 9, from Cousins
Island. He had been given 50 cents to spend on Hamilton Landing to help
along his celebration. He remembered that day vividly 83 years later and
sent $1 to a boy of this generation to spend on July 4, 1949 at Chebeague.
The first boy was Dennis B. Hamilton (1857-1949), the second boy is "Pal"
Bowen, son of Richard and Beatrice Bowen."

the stone sloop "Rocky Mountain" under captain Isaac Webber.
It is somewhat puzzling that the 1860 census for his father, William
Hamilton, does not list him. This leaves the door open to the possibility that
"Stone Sloops" has his parentage wrong. The other possibiliity is that he
was actually born after 1860.

I am favoring the second wife as the mother of Julia because if the first wife were her mother, she married her first cousin, which would have been very unlikely. If Julia was a child of the second wife, then all her later siblings would be also. Note that she and her brother, John, married a set of siblings and (assuming Julia and John were FULL siblings), John also would have married his first cousin.
She is enumerated in her father's household for the 1860 census.
