MEDWAY - Priscilla Helen McLaughlin, 93, was able to be reunited with her husband, Willard, and her daughter, Betty, on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013. She was born Aug. 4, 1920, in Fort Kent, daughter of William and Mary (Fortine) Dempsey.Priscilla moved to Medway at a young age and graduated from Medway High School in 1939. She married Willard McLaughlin on June 15, 1940, and together they raised a family of seven children. This matriarch was dearly loved and respected by each and every member of her large family and, in return, they knew she loved him or her unconditionally. She showed her love in a number of ways, everyday. Priscilla would make a special effort to appear or mail a birthday card to every 50 plus immediate family members on their birthday. Special times were shared at the family home she helped build in Medway, playing games and giving undivided attention.Christmas Eve brought the clan together at the homestead where Santa appeared in many shapes and sizes. The kitchen table was oftentimes packed at night with some very serious penny poker players. On many summer days the camp at Cedar Lake was filled to overflowing where new babies were passed around and rocked to sleep. She rejoiced in and supported her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren to the end.A generous soul, Priscilla volunteered at numerous public and family functions and often gave tirelessly of herself to help promote the town of Medway. She founded Chapter No. 55 TOPS of Medway and served in several capacities for over thirty years in the organization.Family members experiencing this sad departure are her children and their spouses, Elliott and Cecile Michaud, Gail and Johnny Libby, George McLaughlin and friend, Gerry Jones, Joan and David Michaud, Benjamin McLaughlin, Richard and Colleen McLaughlin, and Debra and Rick Levasseur. She will also be greatly missed by her numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, with three more arriving soon! She also is survived by sisters, Mary and Geneva; brother-in-law, Keith Borello; and numerous nieces and nephews. Priscilla was predeceased by her loving husband, Willard; and her eldest daughter, Betty Michaud; brothers, George, Gordon, and William "Bill" Dempsey; and sister, Laura Pelkey

Obituary: New York Times
John Church Hamilton, a son of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, died early yesterday morning in the Stockton cottage, on Ocean avenue, Long Branch. He had been failing from extreme old age for several months, but the immediate cause of his death was a complication of jaundice and ?. Mr. Hamilton was born in Philadelphia in 1798, while his father was Secretary of the Treasury and was only 14 years old when the latter was killed in the famous duel with Aaron Burr. He graduated from Columbia College in this city in 1809 and afterwards studied law. Subsequently he entered the United States Army and during the War of 1812 served as Aide-de-camp on the staff of Major General Harrison. He does not appear, however, to have been actually engaged in the field. In June, 1814, he resigned his position in the Army and returned to private life. He did not apply himself to the practice of law, but, having strong literary tastes, devoted himself to the study of history, with a view to writing his father's life. Between 1834 and 1840 he published the "Memoirs of the Life of Alexander Hamilton," in two volumes, octavo, which brought Hamilton's life down to the adoption of the Federal Constitution. Two more volumes were expected but did not appear. In 1851 he published "The World of Alexander Hamilton" in 7 volumes, octavo, and in 1858 "A History of the Republic as Traced in the Writings of Alexander Hamilton" in 2 volumes, octavo, he also published an addition of " The Federalist," with notes and comments, which was highly praised by the late Horace Greeley. Mr. Hamilton's opinions on economical subjects were at different times solicited by Judge Lawrence, First Controller of the Treasury; General Grant and latterly, by President Arthur. In politi
Mr. Hamilton was at first a Whig and afterwards an ardent Republican. He, however, never held an office, although he was years ago an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in a district of this city. Not quite two years ago Mr. Hamilton presented to this city the statue of Alexander Hamilton which stands upon a little knoll in Central Park near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the unveiling of the statue, on November 23rd , 1880 Mr. Hamilton said: "Upon a base of granite rock with a tracing of forest trees marking it's central position and valuing the sympathies of this distinguished assemblage, I present it to this great Metropolis through your honor, (Edward Cooper) it's esteemed Mayor. Though preferring it were the act of others, I may be permitted to avow a trust near the close of a century of our natural existence, time having developed the utility of his public services and the lessons of his polity, that this memorial may aid in their being recalled and usefully appreciated under the blessing of a Constitution ordained and established by the people of the United States of America. " Mr. Hamilton married a daughter of John Cornelius Van den Huevel, a prominent and wealthy merchant of this city. His wife died in 1872. 9 Children survive him. The sons are General Schuyler Hamilton, who served with distinction in the Mexican War and also the War of the Rebellion; Judge Charles Hamilton, of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin; William G. Hamilton, the consulting engineer of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company; and Alexander Hamilton of Westchester County. One of his daughters married Major General Halleck, and, after his death Major General George Cullum. Another is the wife of ex-Judge Charles A. Peabody. Three of his daughters - Charlotte A., Adelaide, and Alice- are unmarried. Mr. Hamilton's remains were brought to this city from Long Branch yesterday afternoon. The funeral services will be held in Trinity Church at 12[PM] tomorrow.

Biography: SCHUYLER HAMILTON

Hamilton, Schuyler, Major-General, was born in New York
city, July 25, 1822. He was graduated at West Point in 1841,
entered the first infantry and served on the plains and as
assistant instructor in tactics at West Point. In the Mexican
war he served with conspicuous distinction, being brevetted
1st lieutenant for gallantry at Monterey, where he was
severely wounded, and captain for gallantry at Mil Flores,
where in a hand-to-hand encounter with Mexican lancers, he was
wounded by a lance, which passed entirely through his body.
He was promoted 1st lieutenant in March, 1848, was acting
aide-de-camp to Gen. Scott from 1847 to 1854, and in 1855
resigned from the army. At the beginning of the Civil war he
reentered the national service, volunteering as a private in
the 7th regiment, N. Y. state militia, served for a time on
the staff of Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, and afterwards acted as
military secretary to Gen. Scott until the latter's
retirement, being instrumental in preventing the murder of
certain Confederate prisoners of war captured on the battle
field of Bull Run. He was subsequently assistant chief of
staff to Gen. H. W. Halleck, with the rank of colonel, was
commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers on Nov. 12, 1861,
and ordered to command the Department of St. Louis. He served
with Grant's army operating in western Kentucky and Tennessee,
suggested to Gen. Pope the cutting of a canal to turn the
enemy's position at Island No. 1O, and commanded a division in
the assault on that island and New Madrid, for which he was
promoted major-general of volunteers on Sept. 17, 1862. He
commanded the reserve at the battle of Farmington. On Feb.
27, 1863, he was compelled to resign on account of feeble
health. After the war Gen. Hamilton made a number of attempts
to be reinstated on the army list as lieutenant-colonel and
colonel U. S. A., but was unsuccessful, and his friends have
always maintained that in neglecting to restore him to rank
the government was guilty of gross injustice to a brave and
faithful officer. He was hydrographic engineer for the
department of docks, New York city, 1871-75. Gen. Hamilton
died March 18, 1903.

Description:
The American Civil War Research Database is a historic effort to compile and link all available records of common soldiers in the Civil War. This database makes it easier than ever before to find information on ancestors who fought in the Civil War.
Historical Data Systems has compiled and linked a wide array of record types including state rosters, pension records, regimental histories, photos, and journals. The genealogical value of this record is immeasurable. More than authoritative names and dates, this database connects researchers with the history their ancestors lived.

The collection is divided into four sections, soldier records, regiment records, battle histories, and officer records. This section of the database contains detailed information on all officers who attained the rank of Brigadeer General or higher.
