compiled by Bob Anderson. Birthdate given is 10 May 1869. He is identified
as the husband of Nellie Mansfield. His parents are not identified.
"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart, p.114. Birth year given is
1870. No wife or children listed. P.107 tells that he was a cook on a stone
sloop under captain Alfred E. Hamilton.
Although not absolutely guaranteed that these two sources refer to the
same man, it would appear extremely likely.

Founding Father, Statesman. The thirteen states after the Revolutionary War were weak and still separate. Alexander Hamilton was the strong voice calling for a strong united government with a new Constitution and then most instrumental in the formation and convening of the Constitutional Convention at Philadelphia which established the United States of America. He was born southeast of Florida on Nevis, a small island making up the group in the Caribbean known as the West Indies. His mother was unwed and the daughter of a doctor and his father a merchant. He was tutored but mostly self educated while growing up in St Croix where his mother died when he was eleven forcing him to support himself. Finding employment in the office of a Merchant, becoming most capable while writing and submitting articles to a local newspaper which were published. He became liked and well known as was his ambition to attend college. The local merchants recognizing his talents, paid to educate him, funding his venture to New York where he entered King's College (Columbia). He soon became an activist for independence from Britain and his enthusiasm encouraged entry into the army serving as George Washington's chief military aide. Hamilton distinguished himself taking part in many battles. His main contribution was as commander of the troops during the Battle of Yorktown. He represented the state of New York at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. The new Constitution written, Hamilton worked to have it accepted by speech making and using the pamphleteer method for publishing favorable articles. George Washington as President, appointed him to the first nations cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury at age 34. Hamilton became its most prominent member outlining the new nation's monetary policy, raising funds to pay off the Revolutionary War debts and funding the administration. During his tenure, he left behind a staggering legacy: He restored public credit in a nation bankrupted by war debt, devised the first tax, budget, accounting systems, installed the Customs Service, Coast Guard while conceiving the first central bank. Hamilton had opposed Aaron Burr when he was running for President and again when running for governor of New York. Hamilton surmised Burr was not fit to occupy either office and through his influence had him defeated. It was the custom to settle serious arguments with pistols at close range. Burr then Vice President, challenged Hamilton to a duel and the challenge was accepted. They met at dawn the next morning across the Hudson at Weehawken, New Jersey. Hamilton did not intend to shoot Burr but his opponent shot to kill and seriously wounded Hamilton. He was conveyed by boat back to Manhattan and spend his final hours at a house on Jane Street where he received medical attention. He requested communion and it was administered by the rector from the family's nearby Trinity Church and his death followed at the young age of 49. With bells tolling, a large procession followed the body from Jane Street to Trinity Church where his close friend Gouverneur Morris, a leading figure at the Constitutional Convention and former minister to France, gave the emotional funeral oration. He joined his eldest son Philip, already interred in the Trinity churchyard also killed in a duel. His faithful wife Elizabeth joined him there some fifty years later. His killer, Aaron Burr branded an assassin, fled south in anticipation of pending indictments and the vice president became a fugitive from justice. Postscript: A museum was constructed on the foundation of the structure where Alexander Hamilton was born. It not only highlights the history of Nevis Island but has many artifacts pertaining to Hamilton and is located in Charleston. Weehawken, New Jersey-the site of the duel: the actual rock on which rested the head of Alexander Hamilton after being shot and referred to as the death rock, was moved from the actual site and taken to a nearby lofty perch, made into a base on which a bronze head of Hamilton was affixed. In a bit of trivia: People today still name their tomcats after Alexander Hamilton in deference to his infamous many extramarital affairs. Martha Washington was the first as she named her large carousing tomcat 'Hamilton.' (bio by: Donald Greyfiel

during the War of 1812: served as Aide de Camp of General Morgan Lewis, U. S. Army
James Alexander Hamilton was born in New York, April 14, 1788, the third son of Alexander (1755-1804) and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. After graduating from Columbia College in 1805, he studied for the law, earning admittance to the New York bar in 1809. In the following year, Hamilton established a law practice in Hudson, New York, and in October, 1810, married Mary, the daughter of Robert Morris and granddaughter of former New York Chief Justice, Richard Morris. Following military service in the War of 1812, Hamilton returned to private law practice with vigor. An easy-mannered, slick-talking and ambitious man, he jockeyed for political position, slowly working his way into the most influential Democratic circles of the day, developing a particularly close professional relationship with Martin Van Buren. For several years, Hamilton co-published the New York American, a newspaper reflecting Clintonian Democrat sympathies. As part of Andrew Jackson's "so-called Appointing Council" in 1829, he helped to secure Martin Van Buren's appointment as Secretary of State, but soon had a falling out with the administration. Although he had had a hand in choosing Jackson's cabinet, he became its most caustic critic, later calling it "the most unintellectual and uneducated cabinet we ever had." Nevertheless, over Van Buren's protests, Jackson appointed Hamilton as District Attorney for the Southern District of New York, an office which he resigned in 1833. A staunch defender of his father's conservative fiscal policies, Hamilton prepared a plan for a bank operated by the Treasury Department. Although Jackson had requested the plan, it was never adopted. The demise of the Bank of the United States and the Panic of 1837 changed Hamilton's political leanings, and in 1840 he supported Harrison, and from that time forward, was identified with the Whig and, later, the Republican Parties. Although he withdrew from direct political activity after 1833, Hamilton continued to act as informal adviser to many politicians. An ardent nationalist, he disapproved of abolition on the grounds that the Constitution protected slavery. At every war between 1833 and 1861 he offered his services to his country, even urging emancipation as a military measure during the Civil War. He published several pamphlets during his lifetime and a lengthy autobiography appeared in 1869. Hamilton died in New York City at the age of ninety on September 24, 1878. George Lee Schuyler, son of Philip Jeremiah (b. 1768) and Mary Ann Sawyer Schuyler, was born at Rhinebeck, New York, on June 9, 1811, the youngest of eight children. He grew up in comfortable, if not lavish circumstances, and graduated from Columbia College. He married twice, first to Eliza Hamilton, the daughter of his cousin James Alexander Hamilton, by whom he had three children: Philip, Louisa Lee (1837-1926) and Georgina (1840-1923). After his wife in 1863, he married her younger sister, Mary Morris Hamilton (b. 1828). A civil engineer by profession, he worked with his half-brother Robert in New York City for several years. A yachtsman by avocation, he was one of the organizers in 1844 of the New York Yacht Club and participated in the team which captured the America's Cup trophy in England, 1851. As the last surviving member of this team, he donated the cup to the New York Yacht Club in 1887. In the 1850s, Schuyler was known to have his patriot grandfather's papers at his New York City office, and in 1867 he published Correspondence & Remarks upon Bancroft's History of the Northern Campaign of 1777, and the Character of Major-General Philip Schuyler in an attempt to rehabilitate Schuyler's military career from Bancroft's aspersions. George L. Schuyler died of a heart attack July 31, 1890, in his stateroom aboard Elbridge T. Gerry's steam yacht Electra moored at Newport, Rhode Island. His three children all survived him. George Schuyler's daughter, Louisa Lee Schuyler, was born on October 26, 1837, the second of three children. She grew up "in a home of unpretentious wealth," spending vacations at her grandfather James Alexander Hamilton's country home near Dobbs Ferry. At the age of twenty-three, she made her first inroads into what would later be called welfare work, as a volunteer teacher for the Children's Aid Society. With the outbreak of the Civil War, she helped organize the Woman's Central Relief Association, the parent body of the United States Sanitary Commission, under the directorship of the famed Unitarian clergyman, Henry W. Bellows. Entering avidly into this work, Louisa so exhausted herself that she spent several years after the war recuperating in Europe and Egypt. Upon her return to New York in 1871, she again took up the challenge of social work, organizing the State Charities Aid Association, which encouraged private citizens to inspect public institutions. The tide of public sentiment fostered by this plan was instrumental in establishing the nation's first nurses' training school at Bellvue Hospital in 1874. Miss Schuyler championed the cause of humane care of the insane, and in 1890, arranged for the transfer of insane inmates from county almshouses to state hospitals. In later years she worked in the cause of blindness prevention, but ironically became blind herself at the end of her long life. Characterized as a woman who had "the mind of a lawyer and the willpower of a captain of industry," she died at her home in New York City on October 10, 1926, nearly eighty-nine years old.
Obituary: New York Times
James A. Hamilton, son of Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury under Washington, died on Tuesday last at "Nevis," the old Hamilton mansion on the Hudson, near Irvington, at the advanced age of 91 years. James A. Hamilton was born in the year 1788, while his father was engaged in the Constitutional Convention, and was 16 years of age by the date of the famous encounter with Aaron Burr. Two years previous his elder brother, a young man of 20 had lost his life in a duel. The second son, John C. Hamilton, wrote the life of his father in two volumes. The name of the deceased, James A., is familiar in the literary world, as the author of a work, published in 1870, entitled " Hamilton's Conduct as Secretary of the Treasury Findicated in which considerable documentary evidence of importance is adduced in defense of his father's financial policy. He married a grand-daughter of Robert Morris, of Revolutionary fame, and retired from active life after the Administration of Andrew Jackson, of whom he had preserved many striking reminisces. Nearly 50 years ago he built the mansion on the Hudson, a mile from the busy village of Irvington. It is a strikingly simple Greek structure, such as was considered exactly the thing in those days having five weather-beaten Doric columns on either front, the one colonnade overlooking the Hudson, the other facing a shaded country road embowered in forest trees. The house was originally brown, but, not having been painted for years, has something grim and stern about it. At the rear a noisy little brook purls through a deep, wooded ravine, winding through the grass like a strain of music. The Hamilton mansion was famous in New York society 40 years ago and had been the scene of many a distinguished gathering. I t is now occupied by by a son of the deceased, a gentleman having the strong, thick-set physique of the Morrises, rather then the slender form of the Hamiltons, with the Greek nose, dashed with Galic nervousness and decision, and the sensitive mouth of that historic family. Mr. Hamilton retained the use of his intelectual faculties until within the last tour or five years. His death was consequently not an unexpected stroke, but those who knew him will miss an old man , a picturesque and rambling reminiscences of society and politics in old times. He remembered Jackson, and all about the great Mrs Eaton scandal, and the ins and outs and windings of Martin Van Buren's political career. He had seen President Washington and knew all the mythology of the heroes of the Revolution by heart. He was familiar with the inner events of New York society as it was 60 years ago. During the last half a century he had lived the life of a retired gentlemen with scarcely an event of importance to disturb the recollections of youth.
The funeral is announced to take place tomorrow, and carriages will be in waiting at the depot to receive friends and relatives and take them to Nevis, so named after the island where his father was born.

Obituary: New York Times
John Church Hamilton, a son of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, died early yesterday morning in the Stockton cottage, on Ocean avenue, Long Branch. He had been failing from extreme old age for several months, but the immediate cause of his death was a complication of jaundice and ?. Mr. Hamilton was born in Philadelphia in 1798, while his father was Secretary of the Treasury and was only 14 years old when the latter was killed in the famous duel with Aaron Burr. He graduated from Columbia College in this city in 1809 and afterwards studied law. Subsequently he entered the United States Army and during the War of 1812 served as Aide-de-camp on the staff of Major General Harrison. He does not appear, however, to have been actually engaged in the field. In June, 1814, he resigned his position in the Army and returned to private life. He did not apply himself to the practice of law, but, having strong literary tastes, devoted himself to the study of history, with a view to writing his father's life. Between 1834 and 1840 he published the "Memoirs of the Life of Alexander Hamilton," in two volumes, octavo, which brought Hamilton's life down to the adoption of the Federal Constitution. Two more volumes were expected but did not appear. In 1851 he published "The World of Alexander Hamilton" in 7 volumes, octavo, and in 1858 "A History of the Republic as Traced in the Writings of Alexander Hamilton" in 2 volumes, octavo, he also published an addition of " The Federalist," with notes and comments, which was highly praised by the late Horace Greeley. Mr. Hamilton's opinions on economical subjects were at different times solicited by Judge Lawrence, First Controller of the Treasury; General Grant and latterly, by President Arthur. In politi
Mr. Hamilton was at first a Whig and afterwards an ardent Republican. He, however, never held an office, although he was years ago an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in a district of this city. Not quite two years ago Mr. Hamilton presented to this city the statue of Alexander Hamilton which stands upon a little knoll in Central Park near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the unveiling of the statue, on November 23rd , 1880 Mr. Hamilton said: "Upon a base of granite rock with a tracing of forest trees marking it's central position and valuing the sympathies of this distinguished assemblage, I present it to this great Metropolis through your honor, (Edward Cooper) it's esteemed Mayor. Though preferring it were the act of others, I may be permitted to avow a trust near the close of a century of our natural existence, time having developed the utility of his public services and the lessons of his polity, that this memorial may aid in their being recalled and usefully appreciated under the blessing of a Constitution ordained and established by the people of the United States of America. " Mr. Hamilton married a daughter of John Cornelius Van den Huevel, a prominent and wealthy merchant of this city. His wife died in 1872. 9 Children survive him. The sons are General Schuyler Hamilton, who served with distinction in the Mexican War and also the War of the Rebellion; Judge Charles Hamilton, of the Supreme Court of Wisconsin; William G. Hamilton, the consulting engineer of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company; and Alexander Hamilton of Westchester County. One of his daughters married Major General Halleck, and, after his death Major General George Cullum. Another is the wife of ex-Judge Charles A. Peabody. Three of his daughters - Charlotte A., Adelaide, and Alice- are unmarried. Mr. Hamilton's remains were brought to this city from Long Branch yesterday afternoon. The funeral services will be held in Trinity Church at 12[PM] tomorrow.

In 1852 at the age of 9 he started stone slooping with his father on the Sloop George & Mary, soon after he was on the Sloop Lion, in 1858 he was Co-Captain of the "little" Hero with his cousin Solomon Sawyer 4th, in 1859 was with is brother Robert Jr. on the "big" Hero, 1859-1863 with his brother Lorenzo on the Island Belle, in 1863 at the age of 20 was captain of the Jenny Lind, 1870s captained the Mary Eliza and Twilight, 1880s & 1890s captained the Sloops United States, Schooner Florence E. Tower and the Island Belle. His home "Hamilton Villa" was a summer boarding house for some time after the turn of the century - "a bright shrewd man and a square man too". He lived to be 95 years old - once late in his life he was asked how long since he had been to Portland. "Oh must be 10 years - Chebeague is such a wonderful place, I can't see any use of going anywhere else"."

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart, p.110, states that he owned about 87 acres on the nortwest side of Chebeague. Page 62, entitled "A Look Back Through the Revolution" has the text of a fascinating clipping from the 28 Dec 1891 edition of a Portland newspaper. It is an interview of David Hamilton:
. "Great Chebeague, Maine, Dec. 28. Our venerable friend, David Hamilton, now in his 95th year, hale and hearty, with a clear mind a relish for social chat, talked to the Globe correspondent a few days ago at his seaside home on the west side of Chebeague. With Mr. Hamilton was his wife now in her 84th year, the two having travelled along life's journey 59 years together. . "I was born on this island Nov. 4, 1797, and have just passed my 94th birthday. My father Ambrose Hamilton was also born on the island. He lived to be almost 93. His father, also named Ambrose, was born in Scotland and with his two brothers, one of whom settled on Cousins Island, and the other on Walnut Hill North Yarmouth, came and settled here.
. I have heard my grandmother tell about the war of the revolution, and how she saw Portland burned up, fired by the English, when my father was 4 years old. Just before the War of 1812 all the spruce trees on the island died. There was some worm or insect that killed them. The woods were all full of vapor in the tops of the trees. Colonel Waite of Portland who owned one half of the island, let the people cut out this dead wood free, and we sold it for about 9 shillings a cord to the distilleries in Portland. There were about fifteen of them at that time making rum. Rum used to be pretty plentiful and cheap in those days and about everybody used it.
. I was in the woods picking rasberries when the Boxer and the Enterprise had their fight during the War of 1812. It was in the month of August. There was some lively firing of the heavy guns, and I could hear the sharp firing of the small arms too. It was not long before the Enterprise carried the Boxer into Portland. I was about 15 years old and was in the woods working when the news came that the war had closed. Guns were firing in Portland. Father came up from watering the cattle and said he had met old Mr. Johnson and asked him what the firing was about. "Peace. Peace." said the old man, throwing up his hands for joy.
. One remarkable thing in my life is that I have never been to a doctor, but I have gone to the doctor a good many times for others. One winter I went 21 times in an open boat to Yarmouth for the doctor. I suppose my great strength and long life comes from chopping so much wood when I was young. It is estimated that I have chopped 1500 cords of wood in my day. I began when I was 9 years old.
. When I was a boy we used to go to Yarmouth to church. I remember the parson, Tristam Gilman at Yarmouth who was a very old man. He wore a beautiful white wig, and when a boy I used to think his hair was white because he was so good. There was a great revival on this island 63 years ago, under the Methodists, and about everybody on the island got converted.
. I never have rode on a steamboat or on the cars. Since the steamers began to run to Harpswell some 16 years ago, I have not been on one. I have rowed a boat many a time from Portland to Chebeague in a tough northeast gale."
. The old gentleman lives in the house which he built and owns. It is related of him that he said he did not intend to get married until he was worth $1,000, and he reached that figure at the age of 35 and then married."

On 23 March 1964, in respo nse to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph G. Mansfield, I received a response from Kather ine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:..."Ambrose was the second of two sons of John and Betty (Chandler) Hamilton who were in North Yarmouth in 1733. Ambrose went to Chebeague to live in 1760 and was one of the earliest settlers there. He and his wife had seven sons and seven daughters. Hi s older brother John settled in North Yarmouth at Walnut Hill and his younger b rother Roland settled on Cousins Island."Janice Whitaker supplied me with a p hotocopy from an unidentified book:....."HAMILTON, AMBROSE. Private, Capt. Ben jamin Parker's co.; Enlisted July 3, 1775; service to Dec. 31,1775, 6 mos. 13 d ays.; company stationed on seacoast of Cumberland Co.; roll sworn to at North Y armouth; also company order on Henry Gardner, Treasurer, payable to John Hayes, dated North Yarmouth, Oct. 16,1775, for wages for 2 mos. service in Capt. Benj amin Parker's co. on the seacoast in Cumberland Co."Lorna Doone emailed me th is interesting biographical sketch:". This is from "Islands of Maine" by Bill Caldwell.. Great Chebeague the biggest of some 180 Islands in Casco Bay is fou r and a half miles long,a mile wide, with a land area of 2,800 acres. The record ed history of the Island dates back to before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth R ock. Then Chebeague was listed as a "colony of the Royal Crown of England" and i t's first white proprietor was the father of Maine, Sir Ferdinando Gorges. But not for long. In 1650, he sold out to a Boston merchant named Merry, thereby sta rting a trend of Island selling. Merry never set foot on the Island but he boos ted his ego by changing it's name from Chebeague {Indian word for "cold spring water"} to Merry Island. However money spoke louder than vanity to Merry. He so ld the Island at a profit for $500 to another Boston businessman named John Kin g. . Then King sold at a profit to Walter Gendall of Yarmouth. He held it desp ite the inconvenience that he was charged with treason at the time by a Massach usetts court, and had to pay over 20 pounds to buy his pardon. But the Indians didn't pardon Gendall, they killed him. And soon Chebeague's name changed again , strangely this time. The Island was given to two deacons of the First Church of Boston as "recompense for their goodly deeds," and was renamed "Recompense I sland. But only briefly. . On shore, where Stroudwater stands now, between dow ntown Portland and the Jetport, big money was being made in cutting and shippin g tall pines for the masts of the English Navy. Since 1691, all white pines wit h a diameter of 24 inches at one foot above the ground, were reserved for the E nglish Crown and marked with the King's Broad Arrow. Colonel Thomas Westbrook w as one of the men making small fortunes from shipping out the tall white pines. A mast tree 120 feet tall was worth $500. A 75 foot tree for a bowsprit fetche d $200 and a spar fetched up to $100. In 1772 Maine shipped 382 masts, 69 bowsp rits and 451 spars to England and earned over $200,000 a very big sum in those days. With some of those profits, Col. Westbrook bought Great Chebeague. But bu siness on the mainland was too hectic for him to settle out on an Island. None of the early owners had the good sense of the Indians to really enjoy this love ly Island. That had to wait until Scotsman Ambrose Hamilton arrived.. Hamilton built a log house on the north end, fathered 12 children and became grand fath er to 71. The 1860 census for Yarmouth, Cumberland Co., Maine, (Ancestry.com
image 37 of 51):
. Andrew J. Hamilton, age 31, farmer, no estate , no personal estate, he &
entire household born in Maine.
. Cornelia S., age 26.
. Wm. J., age 6.
. Dorcas Ross, age 63.
Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart, p.106. He died in the south
fighting in the Civil War. His farm now belongs to Groves.
This is obviously a confusing relationship. Here is my educated speculation:
The Dorcas Ross listed in Andrew's household is certainly the mother of
Pamela Ross. This would be strong evidence for the marriage of Pamela to
Andrew. However, "Stone Sloops of Chebeague" gives William Jackson Curit
as Pamela's only husband. It would seem likely that Pamela first married
W.J. Curit and that they had a son, William J.. Mr Curit died and Pamela
married a second time to A.J. Hamilton. Pamela then died before bearing
any more children. Mr. Hamilton raised his stepson. Pamela's mother moved
into the household. Mr. Hamilton married a second time to Cornelia. This
seems to be the only sequence of events that would bring all the facts into
harmony.

General Notes: Wife - Pamela Ross
"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart pp.100 &132, identify her as wife of William Jackson Curit. He is the only husband listed for her. The chart on p. 106 states that Andrew Jackson Hamilton married Pamela Ross, but does not give her parents. This is only speculation, but perhaps W.J. Curit died, then Pamela married A.J. Hamilton. The fact that Pamela's mother is listed in A.J. Hamilton's household in the 1860 census is strong evidence for the marriage of A.J. Hamilton to Pamela. However, in that same 1860 census, Pamela is not listed. Instead there is a 26 year old Cornelia. The only explaination that I can think of for this is that Pamela must have died prior to 1860 and A.J. Hamilton had remarried by then.

William's parents were Nathaniel Potter b. 23 Nov 1767 d. 18 Apr 1854 and Peace Mosher 1766 to 1807. I have more on this line back to Nathaniel Potter Sr. b.1616 but believe I got most of it from you and other sites on the web.

"Harley Miller" <janmil@direcpc.com> emailed me on 23 Jan 2003:
. "I just wanted to thank you for your research on Chebeague Island. My mother, Helen Constance Hamilton, is from the line of Paul, Dana, Ruel, Soloman, John, and Ambrose Hamilton. Paul Jefferson Hamilton left the Island in the 1930s and moved to Salem, Oregon where most of the clan now live. My mother is 80 years old and quite ill. She has enjoyed my sharing my research into her family with her as she longs for her Island and is too ill to travel for a last visit. Much of my research has been lifted, of course, from your sight so we are both grateful for all your work and sharing.
. Paul was a linotype operator at the local newspaper before he retired to a life of golf and being proud of his Scotish ancestors."

Per Harley Miller, a descendant of her brother, "We knew her as "Aunt Hope." She lived into her mid 80's and outlived several husbands. She lived all over the West Coast before settling in Salem where she died. A very kind and generous woman."
