George Ployer was born in Cardross in February of 1938 to John Allen Ployer and Marion (Birt); he was the second of four children. When George was four his family moved to the property where he currently lives on Martinvale Road, his father had a mixed farm there which he then took over.
He married Mary Blue in August of 1962 and raised four children with her Glen, Gail, Scott and Janice. He remembers his eldest son was quite fond of his grandfather John Allen Ployer and would spend a lot of time at the grandfather's house or traveling with him.
George is a great supporter of his local church; he was the treasurer of St. Andrew's Presbyterian for forty years and took offerings for nearly fifty years. He is also an elder in his church for forty years, an elder being essentially the body of the church that runs things. He recently gave up his position of treasurer, it is now being done by his neighbor Sandra Myers. He credits the Ladies Guild for raising a lot of money for the church through fundraisers, lobster suppers, potlucks and they are good to work together to get things done and they provided the baked goods for after funerals.
He recalls when they used to have a party line and his Uncle George wanted to see who was listening so he told someone that a minister was coming to visit. They needed to get the hall ready for him, so when they got to the hall on the night in question it was full of people and the fire was going. They couldn't claim they weren't eavesdropping and when they were told the minister wasn't coming and it was just a test to see who was listening.
He has three grandchildren Nadine and John who are Glens (deceased) and Eve who is Gail's. His daughter Gail is a teacher, and his son Scott is an Electrical Engineer in San Francisco. His other daughter Janice works at DVA in Summerside but has traveled/worked in Japan, Scotland, and New Zealand and has run the Boston Marathon and is a quite avid athlete.
George's wife Mary passed away and he later married Mabel Lauren Maclean of North Lake in November of 2001, they live together on the homestead with a seventeen year old cat for company.

Thomas J. Sullivan, 82, of 801 Third Ave., died Monday, January 5
at the St Louis Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in County Clare Ireland, July 6 1887, the son of James
and Ann Cahill Sullivan. He immigrated to the United States at the
age of 16 and lived in Boston, Mass., and Millinocket Maine, coming
to Berlin in 1917. For many years he was employed as custodian at
St Kieran parish. He later worked for Brown Co. retiring in 1956,
and was a member of St Kieran Church.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Mary Ellen Birt Sullivan,
Berlin; Three sons, James and John L. Sullivan, Berlin, and Thomas
Sullivan, Manchester; Four Daughters, Mrs Charles (Mildred) Mehan,
Mrs Charles (Delia) Arsenault both of Grand Prairie Texas, Mrs Lucien
(Gladys) Lomontagne, Berlin, Mrs Wendell (Audrey) Horne, Boca Raton
Florida; 12 Grand Children, 14 Great Grandchildren.

Mrs Thomas (Mary Birt) Sullivan, 85 of 801 Third Ave., died
Saturday afternoon, Oct 10, at the St Louis Hospital after a long
illness.
She was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada,
September 14, 1885, the daughter of Edward J. and Margaret Mcmannus
Birt and had lived in Berlin most of her adult life. She was the widow
of Thomas J. Sullivan, who died in January 1970. Mrs Sullivan was a
member of St. Keiran Church.
Surviving relatives include three sons, James E. Sullivan and John
L. Sullivan of Berlin, Thomas R. Sullivan, Manchester; four daughters
Mrs Charles (Mildred) Meehan, Mrs Charles (Delia) Arsenault, Grand
Prairie Texas, Mrs Lucien (Gladys) Lamontangne, Berlin and Mrs Wendell
(Audrey) Horne, Boca Raton Florida; 12 Grandchildren, 18 great-
grandchildren; three brothers John Birt, Cambridge, mass, James Birt,
Gardiner, Mass and Louis Birt, Florida.

She will also be sadly missed by her canine companion Cooper.

Daughter of the late Doran & Lucy (Gallant) Hynes. Audrey will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her sisters; Doreen (Joe) Mc Carthy, Hazel (Joey) MacDonald, brother, Louis Hynes, several nephews & nieces and many friends.
Resting at The Hennessey Funeral Home until 9:45 Friday morning then transferred St. Pius X Church for funeral mass at 10 a.m. Interment later in the family plot at The Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Wife of the late Raymond Doucette. Mother of Milton (Joy), Marie (Peter) Gallant, Pat (Russell) Blackett, David (Gladys), Lynne (the late Donnie) Gallant and Carla (Ernie) Jamieson. Mamie to 21 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Predeceased by sisters and brothers Ruth Smith Pettipas, Avis Barrett, Grace Ford, Irma Wylie, Arthur,Seymour, Harry, Utley and Russell Birt. Special foster mother to over 100 foster children.
Resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel, until Monday at 9:45 then to St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, South Rustico for funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment in the church cemetery.

EAST MILLINOCKET - Dorothy Fern (Larlee) Birt, 92, passed away peacefully Oct. 3, 2008, at a local health care facility. She was born Jan. 20, 1916, in Perth, New Brunswick, the daughter of Mabel and Bernard Larlee. Like many families, the Larlee family immigrated to Millinocket seeking employment at Great Northern Paper Co. Dot graduated from Stearns High School, Class of 1934. In 1936 she met Walter Birt and married 10 years later, Feb. 15, 1946. Dot was an active member of First Congregational Church of East Millinocket for more than 50 years. She was an accomplished rug hooker, quilt maker, avid reader and was known for her baking skills, especially her yeast rolls. Dot enjoyed going to yard sales searching for a bargain. Whether she was listening or singing, music certainly brought great joy and peace to her life. For many years she accompanied her husband, Walter, to Augusta, where he was a member of the state legislature. Dot and Walter were fortunate to have been able to visit many places around the world, including Russia, Europe and Australia. Dot, also affectionately known as "Dear Heart," was a kind, most generous and loving lady. Dot's quick wit and enduring faith were traits that people will always remember. Most important in her life was caring for her family, close friends and her grandchildren, Aaron and Kristen, who loved her dearly. After a long journey she has finally been reunited with her husband, Walter; and two sons, Douglas and Walter "Butch" Birt. Dot was also predeceased by her brothers, Jack and Bernard "Snigg" Larlee; and sister, Phyllis Larson; as well as many close family members. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Randi Birt of East Millinocket; her grandson, Aaron Birt and his special friend, Erika Butler, of Kennebunkport; and her granddaughter, Kristen O'Donnell and her husband, Ryan, of Bangor. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joan Larlee and Virgie Birt of East Millinocket, Kay Leavitt of Eddington and Kay Larlee of Liberty Hill, Texas; and her brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Polly Birt of East Millinocket. Dot's family would like to thank Katahdin Nursing Home staff and the staff at Stearns Assisted Living for their excellent care while she was a resident at each facility. Calling hours will be held noon-2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at First Congregational Church of East Millinocket. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev. Andrew McLeod officiating. Burial will be held afterward at East Millinocket Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given in her name to the Memorial Gift Fund at First Congregational Church of East Millinocket.

"House" wives are regulars at legislature
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -
Peg Farnham and Dottie Birt don't vote, but they know more about the legislature, and have attendance records that are better than some who are elected to serve.
The wives of two Republican state representatives have missed only a handful of days of recent special session and have sat patiently through hours of debate, party caucuses and public hearings.
They are familiar faces in the back row of the House fallery. Below them, separated by two seats, are their husbands, Roderick E. Farnham of Hampden and Walter A. Birt of East Millinocket.
Mrs. Birt has accompanied her husband to Augusta almost every day for the 14 years he has served in the Legislature, while Mrs. Farnham says she has missed a few days during the six years her husband has been in the House.
"You couldn't keep us away," said Mrs. Birt. "We just love it."
Both women, who spend a considerable amount of their time together in Augusta, are the core of a small group of legislators' wives who accompany their husbands to the State House.
In the capital, they live in a motel with their husbands throughout the session, traveling home on weekends and holidays.

DOUGLAS EDWARD BIRT
EAST MILLINOCKET Douglas Edward Birt, 56, died peacefully Aug. 7, 2006, with his loving family at his side, at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, N.Y. He was born April 22, 1950, in Bangor, the son of Walter A. and Dorothy (Larlee) Birt. Douglas grew up in East Millinocket and graduated from Schenck High School in 1968. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was a member of the East Millinocket Congregational Church. Doug graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1972 and sailed on various tankers and cargo ships for 33 years. Known for his hard work and dedication, he started as a third engineer and finished his career proudly as a chief engineer. Doug recently retired and in the last few years he worked as a part-time instructor at the Calhoon MEBA School in Easton, Md. and recently was also teaching at the Global Maritime Transportation School at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King's Point, N.Y. Doug was very proud of reaching a goal that allowed him to share his knowledge and passion for marine engineering with his colleagues and students. Doug was a kind, gentle, generous man with a big heart, a wonderful sense of humor who enjoyed the company of his family and friends, old and new. He enjoyed family vacations, swimming, read-ing, movies, cooking and going for impromptu car rides. Doug was always ready to engage in a discussion involving politics or the stock market. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Randi of East Millinocket; his mother, Dorothy of Millinocket; his son, Aaron and special friend, Erica Butler, of Old Orchard Beach; his "baby girl," Kristen O'Don-nell and husband, Ryan, of Manchester, N.H.; and his best canine friend, Bobo. Doug will be remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father, Walter A.; and his brother, Walter H. "Butch" Birt. Visiting hours will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the Bouchard-Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the East Millinocket Congregational Church. Interment will take place after the funeral services at the East Millinocket Cemetery. Daughter of the late William and Euphenia (Nicholson) McNevens, she was born Dec 4 1883 at Valley Field PEI. She had resided in East Millinocket since 1921. Mrs Birt was a member of the East Millinocket First Congregational Church and the American Auxiliary. Surviving are seven sons. Walter, William, Harold, Daniel, and George, all of East Millinocket. Lewis of Red Bank NJ, Robert of East Dedham; a daughter Mrs Carleton Leavitt of Presque Isle; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs Jonathan Preece of Atlanta, GA, Mrs Watson Morgan of Lakeworth Fla; a brother Neil McNevens of Lincoln. Funeral services will be held at First Congregational Church in East Millinocket, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the pastor, Rev Francis Hawes officiating. EAST MILLINOCKET - William C. Birt, 89, was born Nov. 8, 1917, in How-land, the son of Walter H. and Mary Jane (MacNevin) Birt. He retired from Great Northern Paper Co., as an engineer, after nearly 50 years of service. During that time, he spent several years with Great Southern, Georgia. Bill served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II in Europe. He was very active with the snowmobile club in Medway, and was well known for planning and building items needed for the clubhouse. Bill assisted in many things for the First Congregational Church, East Millinocket, including the new heating plant. He was predeceased by his wife, Chrystal (Perry) Birt; four brothers, Walter, Harold, Robert and George; a brother-in- law, Carlton Leavitt; two nephews, Walter Howard Birt and Douglas Birt. Bill is survived by two brothers, Lewis Birt of Bangor and Daniel Birt and his wife, Pauline, of East Millinocket; a sister, Catherine Leavitt of Eddington; nieces and nephews, Jonathan Birt and his wife, Paula, Valerie Barnes and her husband, Gerald, Clifford Birt, Dorothy Jane Sawyer and her husband, Stephen, Karen Curtis, Mark Leavitt, Harold Birt and his wife, Brenda, Arthur Birt and his wife, Carla, and Diane Brown and her husband, Dana; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. BANGOR - Lewis J. Birt passed away Oct. 16, 2007, after an extended illness at a local health care fac-ility. Lewis was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Boston, the son of Walter Howard and Mary Jane (Macnevin) Birt. An honor graduate of Schenck High School in 1937, Lewis pursued further education, graduating from Aroostook State Normal School in 1940 and was a 1947 graduate of the University of Maine in Orono. After graduation from Aroostook State Normal School, Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in London during the Blitz as a cryptanalyst. Upon discharge, he attended the University of Maine. Again, the country called and he re-enlisted for the Korean War. Upon his discharge and until his retirement, he continued his previous military assignment as a civilian. Lewis lived in the Fort Monmouth, N.J., area until his health deteriorated, then returned to Maine in January 2002. Lewis was raised in the Sublime Degree of a master Mason, May 8, 1947, in the Nollessemic Lodge No. 205, Millinocket. On Oct. 8, 1957, he was exalted to August Degree of a Royal Arch Mason in the Hiram Chapter No. 1, Red Bank, N.J., where he began his very active and personally fulfilling Masonic career. On Sept. 27, 1958, he was granted a royal and select master in Field Council No. 12, Trenton, N.J. It was in 1959, when he was knighted in Corson Commandry No. 15. He was installed in the Hiram Chapter No. 1 as high priest, an office he was to hold several times in 1963. Receiving all three degrees at the 7th Annual Crytic Rite Festival, Lewis went on to serve Field Council in many positions, including illustrious master in 1964. He served Corson Commandry in many offices, including eminent commander in 1964. He was honored to join the Grand Council as district deputy grand master from 1967 to 1973. His service with the Grand Council continued as representative to Colorado and as a member of the Credentials Committee for many years. It was in 1970 that Lewis was selected to become the 140th member of "the Philalethes," a recognition of research. He served the Grand Chapter of New Jersey as district deputy High priest from 1969 to 1974, and then as their grand historian for many years thereafter. The Servical Grand Chapter of the United States recognized his dedication by presenting him the Genical Grand Chapter Bronze Medal award in 1972. It was in 1979 when Lewis was awarded the Genical Grand Council Crytic Mason of the Year Medal and the Harry Ames Putnam Award. As a member of the Grand Commandry, he sat as their grand historian for several years. Later in life, he contented himself writing historical papers and doing Masonic research for many grand officers of all the bodies. He was best known by his brothers as the "doer," doing the work for others and never seeking acknowledgements, which were his due. Credit and acknowledgements he passed to others. For him, the research was doing the job and doing it right - right according to the rules, regulations and customs of the fraternity he loved so much. It was in 2002 that he received his recognition of 55 years of membership in his home lodge, Nollesemic Lodge No. 205, Millinocket. He refused to transfer that membership to New Jersey. He now joins his mother, father and brothers, Walter, William, Harold, Robert and George; nephews, Walter, How-ard and Douglas Birt. Survivors include, brother, Daniel and wife, Pauline, of East Millinocket; sister, Catherine Leavitt of Eddington; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Virgie Birt, also of East Millinocket; nephews, Jonathan and wife, Paula, Clifford, Harold and wife, Brenda, of East Millinocket, Arthur and wife, Carla Birt, of Cumberland, Mark Lea-vitt of Eddington; nieces, Randi Birt of East Millinocket, Valarie and husband, Gerald, of Millinocket, Dianne and husband, Dana, of Charlotte, Kane Curtis of Waterville and Dorothy Jane Sawyer and husband, Steven, of Smithfield, S.C. Harold Earl Birt Sr. East Millinocket - Harold Earl Birt Sr.,m 76, died at his residence in East Millinocket, Dec 26, 1997. He was born Dec. 17, 1921, in East Millinocket, the fourth son of eight children of Walter Howard and Mary Jane (MacNevin) Birt. He was educated in the public schools and graduated from Garrett Schenck Junion High School in June of 1940. He was employed at Great Northern Paper Co. from Aug. 1, 1939, starting as a piper and retiring as night maintenence foreman on July 31, 1985. On March 26, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving 23 months in the Asia-Pacific area until Dec. 4, 1945. Harold was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC, of East Millinocket, and a formaer chairman of the trustees. On Jan 30, 1950, he was united in marriage with Virgie Ada Perry, Harold was very active in the Masonic Lodge. He was raised to the Subline Degree on April 5, 1951 in Nollesemic Lodge No. 205 of Millinocket, by play cast of "The Rose Upon the Alter". He served as worship master in 1968. He served the Grand Lodge of Maine as district deputy grand master of the 24th Masonic District in 1976 and 1977. He was exalted to the August Degree in Mt. Katahdin R.A.C. No 60, Millinocket, on April 14, 1953. He was installed as high priest in 1962, 1963, and 1965, and as secretary from 1971 through 1984 and again in 1987 and 1988. He served the grand chaper as district the Red Cross of Constantine in Tamerlane Conclave No. 4 in Bangor on Sept. 25, 1976. He was a member of the Maine Lodge of Research. He was a member of Onawa Chapter No 130 Order of the Eastern Star of the Valley of Bangor Eastern Star Lodge of P:erfection, Palestine Council Pricess of Jerusalem and the Chapter of Rose Croix, and the Valley of Portand Consistory 32nd Degree ASSR. He became a noble of Anah Temple, A.AO.N.M.S. on May 8, 1976. He was installed grand high priest in South Portland on April 30, 1988. He was a member of Past Officers Association and a member of Past Commanders Accociation. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Virgie (Perry) Birt of East Millinocket; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Earl Birt Jr and Brenda Anne Birt of East Millinocket, Arthur Perry Birt and Carla Gay Birt of Millinocket; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane Mary Brown and Dana Lewis Brown of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, Dawn Mary Birt, Carl Perry Birt, Christopher Virgil Birt, Lynda Diane Birt, Justin Perry Birt, Adam Lucas Birt, Derek Allen Brown, Brandon Birt Brown, Jeremy Owen Brown, and Erin Lea Brown; two great-grand-children, Coddy Allen and Kaylee Marie Brown; threee brothers William C Birt, Daniel and his wife, Pauline Birt of East Millinocket and Lewis J Birt of Red Bank, N.J.; one sister Catherine M Leavitt of Eddington.

EAST MILLINOCKET - William C. Birt, 89, was born Nov. 8, 1917, in How-land, the son of Walter H. and Mary Jane (MacNevin) Birt. He retired from Great Northern Paper Co., as an engineer, after nearly 50 years of service. During that time, he spent several years with Great Southern, Georgia. Bill served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II in Europe. He was very active with the snowmobile club in Medway, and was well known for planning and building items needed for the clubhouse. Bill assisted in many things for the First Congregational Church, East Millinocket, including the new heating plant. He was predeceased by his wife, Chrystal (Perry) Birt; four brothers, Walter, Harold, Robert and George; a brother-in- law, Carlton Leavitt; two nephews, Walter Howard Birt and Douglas Birt. Bill is survived by two brothers, Lewis Birt of Bangor and Daniel Birt and his wife, Pauline, of East Millinocket; a sister, Catherine Leavitt of Eddington; nieces and nephews, Jonathan Birt and his wife, Paula, Valerie Barnes and her husband, Gerald, Clifford Birt, Dorothy Jane Sawyer and her husband, Stephen, Karen Curtis, Mark Leavitt, Harold Birt and his wife, Brenda, Arthur Birt and his wife, Carla, and Diane Brown and her husband, Dana; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at the First Congregational Church of East Millinocket, 11 Maple St., East Millinocket, with Pastor Andrew MacLeod, pastor, officiating. Spring interment will be at East Millinocket Cemetery.
