Leonard Howard House - St. Charles, IL:
The residence was built in the Shaker style in 1837. Its owner, Leonard Howard, a contractor and builder, was also proprietor of the Howard House Hotel. His wife, Caroline, was a member of the spiritualist movement and believed that the spirits of the dead could send and receive messages through her and others who knew how to contact them.
It is said that Mrs. Howard played a role in the infamous Richard's Riot of 1849. Her psychic powers reportedly enabled her to reveal the location of the body of a recently deceased young bride named Mrs. Kenyon, which had been robbed by a Franklin Medical College student.
Caroline Howard and her daughters held many seances in the house, and the services that Mrs. Howard offered became quite popular with grieving wives during the Civil War. Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln, who had suffered the loss of her huband and two of her sons, came to St. Charles in 1871. It is said that she consulted with Mrs. Howard daily while she stayed at the Howard House Hotel under the alias of "Mrs. May."
After Caroline Howard died, one of her daughters continued conducting the seances in the home. Eventually she married C.L. Blanchard, who was an undertaker. For a short time, the house served as a funeral parlor. One of the downstairs rooms was used as an embalming and viewing room until Mr. Blanchard relocated the business to a building on Main Street. The front door of the house still has the name "C.L. Blanchard" etched into the glass.
The Leonard Howard House served as a residence for three generations of the Howard family. After the last of the family passed away, the home was sold and renovations began. During the renovations, several discoveries were made. Two antique parasols, one of which now resides in the St. Charles History Museum, were discovered in the house. A book dating from 1834, which had been hidden between two walls, was also found. At an estate sale held in the 1990s, a shawl belonging to Mary Todd Lincoln was auctioned, along with several other important antiques and artifacts from the house.
The house has been restored and it remains one of the most historic houses in St. Charles.
Howard House Hotel
123 S. Third Street
St. Charles, IL
One of the many hotels that existed in St. Charles from the 1830s to 1910, the Howard House Hotel is one of the few that remains relatively intact. The north section, built in the 1840s by Joel Witherell, served as the original hotel. Later, Leonard and David Howard bought the building, raising its roof and adding the south section. Although the combination Federal and Greek Revival style building had a pillared porch, this no longer exists.
During its heyday, the hotel, which was owned by Leonard Howard, played host to holiday parties and military balls. Mrs. Lincoln stayed here for a time following the assasination of her husband in April, 1865. Under the alias of "Mrs. May," she often frequented the Howard home in search of spiritual guidance from Mrs. Howard.
Although the Howard House Hotel served as a hotel for many years, it has changed ownership many times and has served several other purposes as well. At various times in its history it has been known as the Mallory House, the Atwood Inn, and the Western Hotel. Later it was used as a paint shop, an overall factory, and a beehive factory. Most recently though, the old hotel has served as an apartment house.

"in the will of thomas read, a carpenter of colchester, essex co, eng, writtenin july 1665, and probated in march 1666, he speaks of 'son, thomas, now living in new england in america, with his wife and children', and of a 'son-in-law,daniell bacon, now living in new england in america'. daniel had married mary read, a daughter of the testator."

"thomas Read, son of thomas read of colchester, was in sudbury, mass. as earlyas 1654. He settled in the lanham district, on land which he purchased from his uncle, rev. edmund brown, while he (thomas) was still in england. this locality was probably called lanham by mr. brown from a little place in england spelled larenham, but pronounced lanham, near sudbury, or between sudbury and bury st. edmonds, from which locality mr. brown and thomas are supposed to have come."
"thomas was a fairly prominent citizen of sudbury. he became a freeman in 1656. he was early appointed one of the tything men at the church, and in 1677 hewas one of the men to whom the town gave permission to build a sawmill on the hop river. his place at lanham remained in the family for many years and his descendants have been useful citizens."
thomas married first, katherine, whose maiden name is not known. they were probably married in england. The sudbury vital records give the death of katherine, wife of thomas, on sept. 26, 1677. thomas married again on dec. 29, 1689, arabella thong. thomas died on sept. 13, 1701. arabella survived him, living until apr. 29, 1717. we have no definite record of thomas' children, who may have been born in england, exept one son:"

Samuel Fifield, born 14 June 1735, bapt. 13 July 1735, married Ruth Brown, and lived at Hopkinton. He moved to Vermont in 1790, dying at Danville in 1812. He was a soldier in Moses Foster's company in the Revolution. (as per The American Genealogist v.19, page 101)
Samuel lived in East Kingston until 30-35 years old, then became one of the first settlers of Gilmanton in 1769 or 1770. Moved to Canterbury after about 20 years, then to Norwich, VT where he was in 1795. Next moved to Wheelock, VT with son Edward and was there for the next fourteen years. He and wife both died at home of Stephen Randall and daughter Rachel in Danville. Soldier in His Majesty's Service at 18, served during French and Indian Wars and invaded Canada in 1760. Fought under General Stark at battle of Bennington. Title of Ensign. Was a soldier in Moses Foster's company in the Revolution. (as per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation five page 16 of 30 printed Jul 22, 1999)
General Notes: Child - Colonel Samuel Fifield
He lived in Orange, Orange, VT; Samuel purchased land in Orange, VT on 10 March 1796 and moved there in 1797 as one of the first settlers immediately after marrying his second wife Sarah Davis. His first wife is unknown, apparently there were no children by her. Samuel stopped at New London, NH on his way home from Boston. Going through a door which he mistook for the office door he entered the cellar, falling down the stairs and breaking his leg. The leg set imperfectly, and he was forced to use crutches from that time on. (as per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation six page 48 of 79 printed Jul 22, 1999)
General Notes: Child - Edward Fifield
Edward settled in Wheelock, VT in 1797 at about 21 years of age after purchasing land there. He moved to Ohio about 1815.
Edward was a Lieutenant Colonel in the War of 1812. In 1806 his father-in-law, Colonel John Bean of Wheelock, conveyed hi Wheeelock land to Edward who continued to run the home place as Fifield's Tavern. (per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation Six page 50 of 79 printed Jul 22, 1999)
General Notes: Child - Rachel Fifield
Rachel moved to Conneaut, OH and died there. (per Peter Fifield Wells website Generation six page 51 of 79 printed Jul 22, 1999)

Edmund clerked for Thomas Benton Brown in Brown & Company's Petrolia,Pennsylvania store beginning in 1876 when he first came to Pennsylvaniaand there apparently met his future wife, Salina Jane Brown. Edmund andJames M. Brown were principals of the company along with Thomas in the1880's. Edmund bought the store outright, becoming the sole proprietorin 1896.
3. Phebe Eights Cobb Chesebro' gave Edmund and Lina their family bibleChristmas 1879 as recorded in the bible. Her entry, confirming theapostrophe, was:
"Lina & Ed
From Mother Chesebro'
Christmas 1879"
4. A property indenture confirms Edmund's lot in Petrolia, Pennsylvania(1882) .
5. Quit claim deed in Petrolia, Pennsylvania signed with the apostrophein Edmund's signature confirms the use of an apostrophe to represent theshortened name in 1890.
6. "Edward" on Edmund's and Lina's marriage certificate is an exampleof so many documents with misspellings.
7. Gas and oil lease of farm contains Edmund's apostrophe signature in1902.
8. Edmund's will is dated May 10, 1916 and was probated June 6, 1917 inButler County, Pennsylvania with his wife, Lina Jane Brown Chesebro'appointed executrix.
9. Edmund's grave site is in East Brady, Pennsylvania.
10. Edmund's death memorial plaque misspells name - "Edward P. Chesbro".
General Notes: Wife - Salina Jane Brown
Lina
[Cobb_Chesebro.FTW]
1. Lina insured the Sugarcreek township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvaniahomestead with the Globe & Republic Insurance Company, 216 Fourth Ave,Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania policy number 41-262194 for $400.00. Thehomestead was the estate of her father Matthew Brown.
2. Lina purchased a "General Pershing War Savings Limit Club" savingscertificate for $1,000. This was a large expenditure at the time duringWorld War I (ca 1814-18).
3. Sale of timber document with Lina's name shows the apostrophe (1907).
4. Lina Jane's original burial plot deed (#233) was for Brady's BendCemetery, Pennsylvania dated June 2, 1917. Edmund Palmer was buried inthe Brady's Bend plot but Lina Jane was buried in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
5. Lina's final will, written July 14, 1925 in Tulsa, Oklahomadesignated her son, Albert Brown Chesebro' as heir and sole executor.
6. Lina Jane's death certificate issued by the State of Oklahomaconfirms birth date, October 3, 1853 and death date, November 24, 1947.
7. 1900 census in shows birth date incorrectly as 1856.
General Notes: Child - Albert Bert Brown Chesebro
Bert
[Cobb_Chesebro.FTW]
1. Kittanning Telephone Company document with Bert's signature confirmsuse of the of the apostrophe ca 1900.
2. Bert graduated from Grove City College military school. He was firstemployed by Peoples Natural Gas Co. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but wasmostly employed by Carter Oil (Standard of NJ). He was one of thefounders of the Petroleum Accountants Society of Oklahoma. Bert was alsoemployed by the US Engineers (Corps of Engineers) at the OklahomaOrdinance Works, Pyror, Oklahoma during WWII.
3. Bert's will (handwritten by Ed as Bert was legally blind at the time)was written in 1950 and as Lina Jane's beneficiary left Lina Jane's 2/5Brown Sugarcreek Township, Pennsylvannia homestead inheritance to Larrywith Ed as administrator.
4. Bert's cemetery burial lot deed, dated January 6, 1948, is forMemorial Park, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
5. Bert's funeral memorial book contains many notes and newspaperclippings.

The best way for me to describe the relationship, is for
example if you have 6,000 people in your data base
that are connected via interlocking marriges, and
you find that you have a marriage that is interlocked into
one of my people in my data base, then they are related
via interlocking marriages, does not matter how distant.
The difference here is that the interlocking into my data
base would link to over 724,091 people via interlocking
marriages.
My hobby is working on interlocking marriages,to any
family surname that is in my data, and I exchange with
people to find them, and to assist them in finding lineage
that link into their families.
