General Notes: Husband - Benjamin Franklin Webster
He received his primary education in the public schools of that town (Epsom). He was also a student at Pembroke and in rye. At the age of seventeen years he went to Portsmouth and was employed by Benjamin Norton as an apprentice to the carpenter's trade. He was a ship joiner for several years and since then has been engaged in building operations in Portsmouth. His operations have included the erection of the following notable buildings.; The Kearsarge House, the Cabot street school house, remodeled three churches, also built many residences. In politics he is an ardent and enthusiastic Republican. He is a valued member of the Masonic fraternity, in which he has attained the thirty-second degree. He was married, January 2, 1849, to Sarah a Senter, and they have a son and daughter, Merit V. and Stella C. Webster
Though as an adult, Benjamin Wester did not live in Epsom, he never forgot his roots there. In three transactions in 1902, he purchased land of Warren Tripp, Horace Fowler and Abby J. Holt, land in the amount of about 26 acres. This land was developed into a park for town use, not much different that it appears today. The original plans still exist, showing even the current ball field as it is today. In his will, he writes "I give and bequeath to the Town of Epsom New Hampshire, or the Old Home week Society of the town, or in whatever way my executor may determine (if I have not previously disposed ofir) the land at Short Falls in Epsom that i purchased of Warren Tripp and Mr. Fowler to have and to hold as a Park, and if not wanted for that purpose to revert to my estate.: The town accepted the gift that same year.

Her daughter, Elizabeth, must have caused her great anguish and her daughter, Hannah, great concern when she was captured by Indians. The time of Hannah's death is not known except that she was still living when Michael made his will in 1709. "

PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF ARIZONA (1901), p. 247-248:
L. E. WIGHTMAN, M.D.
"The professional career of Dr. Wightman has centered in Pima and throughout the entire Gila valley, his practice naturally assuming, with the lapse of time, large and constantly increasing proportions. A most capable practitioner, and one in touch with the best methods employed by the followers of Aesculapius in the largest and most advanced centers of the world, he is not wanting in the appreciation which stimulates the best endeavor, nor in that skill in treatment and diagnosis which inspires the utmost confidence in the community.
At Payson, Utah, where he was born May 7, 1869, Dr. Wightman received a portion of his education, attending Iliff Academy and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, later graduating from the Northwestern University, Chicago, in the class of 1894. His parents were W. C. and Lucretia J. (Pepper) Wightman, the former born in New York, and the latter in Quincy, Ill. After graduation Dr. Wightman immediately availed himself of the promise and possibility of the Gila valley, and although having his headquarters from the first in Pima, he for a year had charge of the county hospital at Solomonville, and at the same time worked up a practice through the valley. In 1896 he started, in partnership with a brother, H. P., the pioneer and only drug store in Pima, and which up to the present time has been one of the sound commercial enterprises of the town. In 1900 the doctor withdrew his drug interests and the concern has since been under control of the younger Wightman, who the following year erected the substantial brick store and completed a stock which has not equal in the valley.
As an evidence of his abiding faith in prospects by which he is surrounded Dr. Wightman purchased an adobe house which, upon being remodeled and covered with wood, is an exceedingly pretty and comfortable abode, and where gracious hospitality is unstintingly dispensed. The office is located in the residence, and is in every way suited to the practice of a progressive and up-to-date ameliorator of physical woes. An X-ray machine and electrical and compressed-air appliances are among the modern and late devices of a scientific nature which aid in the search for, and suppression of, anatomical disorder, and which facilitate the arduous duties incident to a practice which extends from Safford to Geronimo. He is now making a specialty of electro-therapeutics in his practice.
In 1895 Dr. Wightman married Janie Weech, and of this union there are two children, William Dewey and an infant daughter, Marval. Mrs. Wightman is a daughter of Hiram and Sarah Weech, of Pima. Dr. Wightman has been prominent in many ways not connected with his profession. In politics a Republican, he was elected mayor of Pima in 1898, and has been in the council for two years. In addition he is examining physician for the Mutual Life Insurance Company, the Equitable Life, and the New York Life, and surgeon for the Gila Valley, Globe & Northern Railroad."

The progenitor of this line and other lines of the WELLS family in America was Thomas WELLES, b. at Rothwell, Northamptonshire, England, about 1598 and is said to have been a descendant of the Essex an older branch of the family and much distinguished in England and having an estate and Manor House, Welles Hall first called Rayne Hall, in Essex, England. The founder of this family was Simon DE WELLES, who was at the siege of Jean D'Acre in Palestine, with Richard Coeur de Lion in 1191 and had this special grant of Arms by the King: Paly of five, gules and or, on a canton argent, a mullett sable.
GOVERNOR THOMAS WELLS, b. circa 1598 in Rothwell, England; d. 14th January, 1660, in Weathersfield, Connecticut, came to New England and settled at Hartford, Connecticut, in the summer of 1636. The next year was chosen Magistrate by the Planters and was in active participation of the duties of the office during the Pequot Wars in 1637. This office he held every successive year from this date until his decease in 1659-1660, a period of twenty-two years. In 1639 he was chosen the first Treasurer of the Colony, under the new Constitution and successively continued in this office until 1651, at which time on account of other duties asked to be eased of the Treasurer's place and the request was granted. In 1641 he was chosen Secretary of the Colony and held the office in subsequent years. In 1649 he was one of the Commissioners of the United Colonies. In 1654 Governor HOPKINS, being in England and Deputy Governor HAINES having died, he was elected by the whole body of the Freemen, convened at Hartford, Moderator of the General Court and this year was again appointed one of the Commissioners of the United Colonies, but other duties prevented him from serving and this year he was also chosen Deputy Governor in 1655 and in 1656 and 1657 Deputy Governor and in 1658 again Governor in 1659 again Deputy Governor; m. Elizabeth HUNT.

First Sttlers of the Colony.
Welles, Gov. Thomas, came into the colony and located himself at Hartford in the autumn of 1636, and upon the 28th day of March, 1637, he became a member of the Court of Magistrates. In April following an important crisis had arrived. The inhabitants of the colony had been constantly annoyed by the Indians, and particularly by the Pequots, by robberies, murders, and the abduction of two respectable young ladies from Wethersfield, who had been carried among the Indians--which outrages could no longer be submitted to by the English settlers. To redress these grievances a General Court of Magistrates were convened, and the three towns which then formed the colony, were ordered, for the purpose of adding safety to the counsels of the court, to send a committee of three persons from each town, to set as advisers with the General Court. Gov. Welles was one of the Court of Magistrates held on the 7th day of May, 1637, who declared an offensive war against the powerful and warlike nation of Pequots, for the redress of the many grievances they had visited upon the English settlers. It was a most important meetlng and decision not only to the colony, but to all the settlers in New England. The Indians had not only murdered many of the English, but had driven away their cattle, and committed other gross wrongs. After mature deliberation, war was declared, and the result saved the colony, and was of immense advantage to all the other colonies, and much credit was due to Mr. Welles for his course taken in this important step. After this time he appears to have become an important man in the colony. He was uniformly a m ember of the Court of Magistrates after March, 1637, until he was elected Deputy Governor, in 1654. In 1640 he was appointed secretary of the colony, which office he held until 1649, and performed the duty of both offices during the whole period. For a time he also performed the duties of treasurer for the colony in 1639. At the session of the General Court in1653, in March and April, the Governor being absent, Mr. Welles performed the duties of the Governor as Moderator of the General Assembly under the Constitution of the Commonwealth. In 1654 he was elected Deputy Governor, in 1656, 7 and 1659. He was also elected Governor in 1655 and 8. In 1649 he was a Commissioner to the Colony Congress. Gov. Welles was frequently associated with Haynes, Ludlow, Mason and other leading men upon important committees appointed by the General Court. He did much in the formation and union of the colonies in 1643, for the mutual benefit and protection of each other. No one of the distinguished men of his time was more uniformly attentive to all his official duties than Gov. Welles, from his first appointment in 1637, until 1659. He was a constant attendant upon the General Court, except when employed in other public duties. His whole public life being fairly examined, he was as important a prop to the new colony as any of the principal men, except Gov. Winthrop.--He died in 1668, and left a large estate to his children, viz. Thomas, Ichabod, Samuel, Jonathan, Joseph, Rebecca and Sarah. Samuel settled at Wethersfield. The descendants of Gov. Welles are numerous in Connecticut at this time. The most prominent of whom are Hon. Gideon, of Hartford--since his late appointment, at Washington--Thaddeus, Esq., of Glastenbury--Hon. Martin, of Wethersfield, and Doct. H. Welles, of Hartford. Gov. Welles came to Massachusetts in a vessel named the Susan and Ellen, E. Payne, master, in company with Richard Saltonstall, Esq. and family, Walter Thornton and others.
First Sttlers of the Colony.
Welles, Capt. Samnel--died in 1675. His children were, Samuel 16 years old, Thomas 14, Sarah 12, Mary 10, Ann 7, and Elizabeth 5. John, son of Samuel, 1664. Edward, 1644. Thomas, son of Thomas, born 1690.
First Sttlers of the Colony.
Welles, Wid. Elizabeth, Wethersfield--died in 1683. Children, Robert Foot, (died before her,) Sarah Judson, deceased--left children, daughters Churchill, Goodrich, Barnard and Smith. Nathaniel Foot's eldest son Nathaniel and his brother and their children shared in her will, Daniel and Elizabeth--grandson John Stoddard--grandsons Joseph and Benjamin Churchill. She was a sister of John Deming, sen'r. and had a grandson Henry Buck.
First Sttlers of the Colony.
Welles, Samuel, moved from Wethersfield to Stratford, with three sons--Thomas, Samuel, and another, perhaps other children. He was the son of Gov. Welles. Perhaps the same Capt. Samuel who died in 1675.
