Dygve was the name of his son, who succeeded him in ruling the land; and a
bout him nothing is said but that he died in his bed. Thjodolf tel
ls of it thus: --
"Dygve the Brave, the mighty king,
It is no hidden secret thing,
Hasgone to meet a royal mate,
Riding upon the horse of Fate.
For Loke's daughter in her house
Of Yngve's race would have a spouse;
Therefore the fell-one snatched away
Brave Dygve from the light of day."
Dygve's mother was Drott, a daughter of King Danp, the son of Rig, who w
as first called "king" in the Danish tongue. His descendants always afterw
ards considered the title of king the title of highest dignity. Dygve w
as the first of his family to be called king, for his predecessors had be
en called "Drottnar", and their wives "Drottningar", and their court "Drot
t". Each of their race was called Yngve, or Yngune, and the whole race tog
ether Ynglinger. The Queen Drott was a sister of King Dan Mikillati, fr
om whom Denmark a took its name

Alias:<ALIA> "The /Wise"./
King Dygve's son, called Dag, succeeded to him, and was so wise a man th
at he understood the language of birds. He had a sparrow which told him mu
ch news, and flew to different countries. Once the sparrowflew to Reidgot
aland, to a farm called Varva, where he flew into the peasant's corn-fie
ld and took his grain. The peasant came up, took a stone, and killed the s
parrow. King Dag was ill-pleased that the sparrow did not come home; a
nd as he, in a sacrifice of expiation, inquired after the sparrow, he g
ot the answer that it was killed at Varva. Thereupon he ordered a great ar
my, and went to Gotland; and when he came to Varva he landed with his m
en and plundered, and the people fled away before him. King Dag return
ed in the evening to his ships, after having killed many people and tak
en many prisoners. As they were going across a river at a place called Skj
otan's [the Weapon's] Ford, a labouring thrall came running to the river-s
ide, and threw a hay- fork intotheir troop. It struck the king on the hea
d, so that he fell instantly from his horse and died. In those times the c
hief who ravaged a country was calledGram, and the men-at-arms under h
im Gramer. Thjodolf sings of it thus: --
"What news is this that the king's men,
Flying eastward through the glen,
Report? That Dag the Brave, whose name
Is sounded far and wide by Fame --
That Dag, who knew so well to wield
The battle-axe in bloody field,
Where brave men meet, no more will head
The brave -- that mighty Dag is dead!
"Varvawas wasted with the sword,
And vengeance taken for the bird --
The little bird that used to bring
News to the ear of the great king.
Varva was ravaged, and the strife
Was ended, when the monarch's life
Was ended too -- the great Dag fell
By the hay-fork of a base thrall!"

History Written by John Wesley Gamble In 1937.
The old streets of memory, some sad curves in it. My father and mother, Mary Elisabeth and Joseph Wesley Gamble were born in North Carolina near Greensboro. They came to Mooresville, Indiana, 40 families in old time covered wagons in year of 1850 from Guilford, County, North Carolina.
There was five children at that time, which were born in North Carolina, William, Nancy Jane, James Oliver, Mary, and Leve. Then there were five children born in Indiana, Joseph F., Sarah H., Rebecca, John W., Henry H. These have all passed away but John W. I am John W. Gamble, born in West Newton, Indiana, in November 27, 1858, a little Quaker village, in Marion County, Indiana, ten miles southwest of Indianapolis. This is being written on March 4, 1937.
Rebecca passed away on Thursday and Joe passed away on the following Saturday. Joseph was 85, Rebecca was 81, and was buried at Little Rock, Arkansas. William was buried at Brownsville, Texas, James at New Orleans. These two died in the Civil War and never returned home. Our father passed away in 1860. Mother passed away at the age of 83 years. After fathers death Mother bought a little farm from a good old Quaker. His name was William Mendenhall. The neighbors cut down beach trees and built a log cabin home. It contained one room, with a kitchen on the side, a living room and a parlor all in one room. All the neighbors helped build the cabin, the Quakers, Methodist and Camelits.
I can't remember of a mean man in that country. They built a beautiful big fireplace with a stick chimney to take away the smoke. We had plenty of light and warm fire to sit by. I tell you it was a beautiful scene. Mother owned some sheep. The neighbors sheered the wool-off of them and Mother carted it into rolls of wool. She had a spinning wheel, which she spun into yarn. Mother use to walk back and forth before the fireplace spinning yarn at night. I thought she was the prettiest and sweetest woman in the world. She also had a loom, which she used to weave yarn into cloth. Mother made our shirts, pants, and coats. I can remember many things that happened during the war that was trying times on poor Mother. Father was gone to rest; Mother was left with us little children and three boys in the army, two never got home. I can remember the last time they were home. They came home on a furlough to stay a few days. That was the last time we ever saw them. William had a wife and little girl, Ida, his wife went to Carolina and passed away there. She was buried there in Carolina.
Mother started us to school very young. We lived about a mile from school that was around the road, but we often went through the woods, which was thick timber, and we called it the crooked and narrow path. We had to climb over fences, when going to school. It was near the Morgan County Line. Our ballpark was near the road. The road being the county line. I was a great ball player (batter). I sometimes knocked the ball clear over into Morgan, County, across the road. Then the boys would have to go to Morgan County to get the ball. "Can you beat it, boys' ".
Leve came home after the war in 1865. He was mustered out on his 18th birthday. All three boys enlisted at Indianapolis. When Leve came home we were all glad, but it was sad to know that the other boys would never return. Some day we will meet. It was hard on poor old mother.
Mother moved to Morgan County in 1865 on Martin Slaughters farm, three miles east of Brooklyn. Leve and us boys farmed together. We moved in a cabin, in Sugar Tree Woods. There were over 600 Maple trees in the woods. The boys taped the trees in the spring and made syrup and sugar. It was a big job. It took several days and nights to take care of it. John Hooker helped the boys. Martin Slaughter had one section of land. We moved on the west side of the farm, which was one mile and a half east of Brooklyn. We lived there 8 years, Joe got married and mother and I and Harry moved to mother's farm near West Newton, and lived there two years.
Then we moved near Maywood near Indianapolis. We farmed on White River, three miles south west of the Union Stock Yards. I have hauled corn to the yards. They were built in the year of 1876 at Indianapolis. There wasn't any West Indianapolis at that time in 1876. The City Cart Works was first built then. There were few houses in Belmount. On the gravel road we hauled wood to the city in four foot pieces. They sold sugar and beach woods for seven and eight dollars a cord. The market was on Market Street, North of State House. I have seen as many as 30 wagons back up on the street loaded with wood. They used wood for fuel those days. Coal was very scarce. Timber was plentiful. Harry and I went into Mill business at Centerton with brother Leve. Mother moved to Centerton and Harry and I stayed with her. Mother built a nice new home just across the street from a church. In a few years Harry and I got married and Mother moved to Brooklyn, and lived there until her death at the age of 83, and was buried beside my father at Mooresville.
While mother was living at Centerton Leve was living there. Leve was walking up the railroad and over took an old colored man and talked to him and was telling him where he was born. His name was Gamble, he said "I knew your father in North Carolina'? He said, " I have jumped and played with him many times and I sure would like to see your Mother, will you please take me to see her?" Leve took him to Mothers house and called her outside and said, " Here is a man who wants to talk to you." She came out and was surprised to see a colored man. He introduced himself to mother. He said " I used to know your man, and played with him in North Carolina I was one of Dr. Toms' Slaves. He and Mother had quiet talk about old North Carolina. He said he had been away from there a long time. The tears came in mothers eyes She said, Poor old colored man, I feel sorry for him". Mother told us of many things that I have forgotten. My great grandmother Hackett had some slaves. She died a long time since she gave grandmother or she stayed at mothers. Poor old Aunt Saley they never left when they were free, Mother said. They always treated them the best. They use to have camp meetings. They always let them go. The colored people all went. They took the wagons to their selves and done their preaching, conducted their own meetings some times got in such a big happy way they would hold their meetings until after midnight. My father would go down where their camp was and tell them to dismiss that they could not go to sleep. Then they would dismiss for the night. Mother said they loved Aunt Saley and they treated her like one of the family. Poor old colored woman. She was to be pitied. She hoped to meet her some day.
Mother told us she had three brothers, Leven Hackett, Vincent, Oliver Hackett came to Indiana to see mother at Mooresville in the 60's but did not live long after she went back to Carolina.
My grandfather Gamble came from Scotland in an early day and settled in North Carolina. Father had one brother, his name was John and one sister, and Aunt Jane we called her. She came to visit us in Indiana some time in the sixtys. I remember her she married a Weatherly. She had a son living near West Newton. His name was Adison Weatherly. She had two more sons one was John and one was Jess. Father had a brother John that died in Carolina some time in 1850. In 1858 his wife came to Indiana. Aunt Saley, Joseph, James and Hannah are buried at West Newton. Betsy is buried at Spencer, Indiana. William is buried in the Indian Nation. Before it became the state of Oklahoma, he and his wife and family went there in the early sixtys. He had four boys and one girl. The boy's names were John, Issac, Mat, and William. The girl's names were Betty and Jane. Three boys are dead now. The girl lives in Kansas City. I visited them in 1884. Mat and William married sisters. The girls were half breed Indians, very good housekeepers and very good looking, but a little dark. Pretty straight hair. The boys became citizens of the nation. I had a good visit with them we had never saw each other to remember one another. There was plenty of Indians in there at that time. I met an Indian Chief. His name was Tom Miller. He was a very nice man to meet. Old William Gamble and his wife hated to see me go back hone. They were getting old. They have long since died and buried there. Mat Gamble and his daughter came to visit me in 1914. He came to Arcola, got off the train, met a man, J. Carlton, who knew me. He said to him "Can you tell me where John Gamble lives"? He said, "John lives in Minnesota". He told him Joe Gamble lived down the street. Mat said " I don't know him, he is no kin to me". The man said that is funny Joe and John are brothers. Mat and his daughter went down to Joe's house and he introduced himself to Joe. He made a visit with Joe which was very exceptable. Mat and William were cowboys. They told me some very scary stories. Mat carried mail one-third of the distance from Kansas to Texas on horseback. One man had the contract to carry the mail. The boys carried the mail for the contractor. The contractor was taken from the trail and murdered, supposed by the Indians. His mother told me how uneasy they were when they heard of the man being killed. They thought Mat might of been killed also. Mat took the mail to his station number. Had a hut made of bark. He stayed there until the next mailman came sometimes all night. They had no regular time. He said they often meet a crowd of Indians and they would stop to one side and give them a friendly handshake. Their chief would tell them not to stop a mailman. He told them how important the mail was. My father was a wood workman. He made wagons, plows, and old time Quaker Carriages. He had a shop at his death. Everything mostly made in crossroad shape. He hired his blacksmith to help him do the smithing. My first plowing I did was with a wooden, double suvel plow that my father made with his own hands. I was eight years old at the time. Mother said she had sit up a number of nights helping father line and complete the carriages. These carriages were known as Quaker Carriages. They all had to have them to go to church in. They were good people. They have big churches at West Newton. I can not forget our good mother. She would have me and Harry to clean up every Sunday morning and go to Sunday School to the Methodist church in the morning and the Christian church in the afternoon. Mother would come to church after Sunday School. She was the good sheperd looking after her little flock of sheep. Mother moved to Brooklyn. Harry and I got married two years before mother moved to Brooklyn.
I rented a farm of Dr. Linley our old Family doctor down on White River, two miles southeast from Centerton across White Lick Creek. The farm had a cabin on it and a barn. Dr. said," you can have the house if you want it". I intended to keep batch at that time. My girl or my sweetheart stayed at brother Leves two years cooking & taking care of his wife. Leve's wife was an invalid seven years. I had been going with her two years. We were all well acquainted with my sweetheart by this time. Mother lived two blocks from Leve's house and stayed by herself most of the time. My girl often went and stayed all night with Mother and slept with her. Then she would go down to Leve's house and get breakfast for them. So you see they were all well acquainted with her by this time. She would go with Mother to church so Mother loved her and she loved Mother and she loved me and mother loved me too and I loved both of them. I had two nice horses we would take a horseback ride, sometimes we would take a walk. One afternoon we took a horseback ride. I said "Let's go down to my cabin home." So we went down the shady lane, down the creek, crossed the creek 3 times through the sycamore woods to the little cabin home. We looked around a little while then started back to town. I said to her "You will come down and clean my house once in a while, won't you"? She laughed and said, "Sure I will." She said "though you will get lonesome down there." I said, "you wouldn't live down there would you?" She said, "I would I reckon. If it is good enough for you it is good enough for me." I said, "We are talking some ain't we." It was to take a horse back ride in those days or take a walk. The time passed on and we became friends of olden times. On Oct 16, 1880 about one month after we took this friendly ride, I went to Martinsville in a wagon to get a load of lumber for Mother. My girl was going with our neighbors and I said "you ride down with me and ride back with Mr. Underwood." So she and I went together down and she rode back with our neighbors. I said "I believe I will get our marriage licenses this afternoon. I don't think they are going to be any cheaper. She said have you got that much money. She thought I was Joking, for I was a Joker, she found out after while. I got them and we were married on the same day. I thought they might not be any good after Oct. 16, 1880 so we lived with my mother until January 10, 1881. Then we moved down to our cabin home near the river. In about one week it commenced to rain and rained until the river flooded all the low land near. The river flooded our cabin home. The water was two and one half feet deep in our cabin, but we was not there that night. I saw what was coming and I took my new bride to her fathers at Brooklyn, Mr. Dyke. I stayed all night. I and her brother went down to our cabin home the following morning and t e water was running through the house. We got busy and took our bedstead and our beding, chairs, to the barn and put them in the mow. The barn being on higher ground. The water busted up the ice and it drifted in some places twenty feet high. It was all busted up in drifts. We could hardly get across. When we moved we left a barrel of meat at Mothers. My wife said one morning, I believe I will go over to Mothers to day and get some pork. We are nearly out. I was helping a neighbor get some corn off the high places so she went over there. She crossed over on the drifted ice, which was very dangerous, if she had slipped through between the cakes of ice she'd been gone.
I said to my wife you are a brave woman, you have a History. I will write you up some day. I taIked about it most 56 years. I said to her George Washington crossed the Delaware River with his army on the ice. Old Liza crossed the Ohio River on the ice. Poor old colored slave and beat the bloodhounds and escaped slavery. I said to my wife, "Mrs. John Gamble you was a brave woman, you crossed White River on the ice with a jug of buttermilk in one hand and a ham of meat in the other hand and beat the wolf to the door. We lived together S6 years and she has helped keep the wolf from the door all these years. We never went back to the cabin to live. Mud and sand in the house. A good neighbor Benjamin Painter said, "John don't go into that cabin you will get sick. I have an empty house you can move in it." " I wont charge you rent for it." It was a nice little house and I went back and forth and farmed the land. I took my dinner with me. Often my wife would come down brlng our dinner and visit me and we would take supper together and go fishing. You see our Honeymoon lasted all summer. These are the most pleasant memories of life. Our first born was on August 24th 1881. We named him William. He past away in 1902. We have three children living at this writing. Walter is living in Boulder Colorado, Laura Martin living at Buffalo Lake in Minnesota, and Charley Gamble at Arcola.
Malvina Dyke, my wife, united with the Christian Church at the age of seventeen at Brooklyn, Indiana. I united in the Methodist Church at the age of eighteen at Brooklyn the same winter. Later on we moved to Illinois. Then we united in the Methodist Church at Filson. I was baptized by Brother Turner. All four of our children joined the Methodist church at Filson and were all baptized in the river, Okaw. We moved to Minnesota, March 1st, 1910, near Winthrop, Sibley County. Paid $54 an acre, good country and rich black soil. Lived there eight years and sold for $100 per acre. A real German neighborhood. We united in the Swedish Methodist Church. They preached English on Sunday at ten o'clock and preached in Swede at night. They were very nice people and treated us nice. We always wanted a home in the church where ever we were living. The members were most all Swedes. Ex-Governor John Lyun's mother and sister lived there and belonged to the church. Grandma Lyuns wanted and a few old Swedes wanted a sermon in Swede. They were entitled to it because they were good people and good payers.
We moved back to Illinois in 1918, and lived in Isabel for ten years. Then we joined the M.E. Church in Isabel. Our membership is there at the time of this writing, 1939.
It has been said that some women have made fools of some men, but I will have to admit that my wife has made a man out of a fool. She always tried to look at the bright side of everything, while here. Now she has gone to the beautiful city above. I am left to travel the lonesome trail alone. Soon the time will come that I will be called to meet her.
Malvina Dyke Gamble was born in Millsprings, Kentucky, on April 12, 1859. Her father and mother were born in Tennessee. They came to Kentucky while they were young and settled at Millsprings, Kentucky sometime in the 50's. They were living there when the war broke out. They had a battle there and Mr. Dyke, my wife's father, did not feel safe there, so he put a cover on his wagon. They put what bedding they had in it and the family crossed the river that night and started for Indiana. They came to Winchester Indiana, in Hindrex County, 5 miles west of Danville, Indiana. Then he enlisted in the army and served in the Mexican war when quite young. He told me they marched into Vera Cruise and Mexico, City. Then he went through the civil war. My wife was quite young, but like myself remembered some things that happened during the war. Her father came home on a furlow and what a sad time when he had to go back. The children hung onto his legs and he cried like a baby but came out all well. He died at Filson, Illinois and was buried at the Arcola Cemetery.
She said they had an Aunt, her mother's sister and Uncle came with them. Her old uncle was shot in the hip, while out in the tobacco patch, by someone. It was dangerous times in Kentucky those days. Grandpa was in favor of the north at that time. They had two boys and two girls, which were born in Kentucky. Two boys and one girl, Laura, living at Indianapolis the youngest one. James was buried at Brooklyn, Indiana. Louis was buried at Spencer, Indiana. George was buried at West Newton. Mary was buried at Indianapolis. William was buried in Utah territory, while in the regular army. He had served two terms liking one month. He had been to get the mail on a horseback. It came a blizzard while he was on his way and his horse threw him off. He froze to death. They found him about three hours after his death.
My wife had a brother, John Dyke, which went in the army in t68. They heard from him for two years. They went out on a hunt, he and another man and never came back. They never heard from him again. The Captain wrote to them.
