Devon - Awliscombe
Entry from White's Devonshire 1878:
Awliscombe, Awlescombe, or Owl's Combe, is a parish and village, 2 miles W. by N. of Honiton Railway Station, 9 miles S.E. from Cullompton Railway Station, and 16 miles N.E. from Exeter; its parish, which includes the hamlets of Weston and Wolverston, is in Honiton union, county court district, petty sessional division, Payhembury polling district of North Devon, Exeter archdeaconry, Dunkeswell rural deanery, and Hemyock hundred. It had 581 inhabitants (270 males, 311 females) in 1871, living in 133 houses, on 2569 acres of land, which rises in bold hills on the north. The parish is said to be called Owl's Combe, from the number of owls which breed here and are heard by night. A handsome bridge over the Otter, connecting this and Honiton parishes, was built in 1817. Awliscombe had a grant for a market and fair in 1291, but both have long been obsolete. An estate of about 207 acres, called the manor of Awliscombe, was given, in 1491, by Thomas Calwodeley, Esq., to the Corporation of Exeter for the relief of poor citizens. The rest of the soil belongs to Colonel Drewe, Mrs. Notley, George Neumann, Esq., F. Pearse, Esq., Lady G. Sawley, Mrs. Elliott, the Pring family, and a few smaller freeholders. Mr. Neumann occupies Tracey House.

Cadell, King of Seisyllwg
(born c.840)
(Latin-Catullus, English-Catullus)
Cadell was given the Kingdom of Seisyllwg by his father, Rhodri Ma
wr in the late 9th century. However, it is unclear how much independen
ce hemanaged to assert after his father?s death. His son, Hywel Dda (t
he Good) married the heiress of the King of Dyfed and united the two kingd
oms to become the first King of Deheubarth. [www.britannia.com/bios/ebk/ca
delcn.html]
------------------------
In the division of the dominion of his (Cadell's) father he was giv
en Deheubarth and a large part of South Cymru. His brother Merfyn receiv
ed Powys. He and his brothers made so much trouble for the neighboring kin
gdoms that they were compelled to seek help from Alfred the Great. In 8
93he was attacked by his brother Anarawd, King of Gwynedd, who invaded a
nd plundered Seisyllwg. After the death of his brother Merfyn, Cadell dro
ve out hisnephews and appropriated Powys to himself. He died about 909 a
nd his kingdomwas divided between his sons, Hywel and Clydog. In the Most
yn Manuscript #117 the pedigree of his distinguished descendant, Llewel
yn ap Gruffyd, is traced back through Cadell to "Adam, son of God." If t
he compiler did not draw on his imagination for parts of this pedigr
ee he must have had access to recordsnot now in existence.
[The Weaver Genealogy]
------------------------
Cadell (d 909), king of Ceredigion and afterwards of Powys, was one t
he six warlike sons of Rhodri Mawr, the most powerful of the early Welsh k
ings. If we can trust a late authority, he was Rhodri's eldest son, and re
ceived as his patrimony Ceredigion, with the palace at Dinevwer, and an ov
erlordship over his other brothers. In 877 Rhodri was slain by the Saxon
s, and Cadell entered upon his turbulent reign. In conjunction with his br
others he ravaged and devastated the neighbouring states of Dyved and Brec
heiniog to such purpose that the latter gladly accepted the help of King A
lfred against a nearer and more terrible foe. Not long after the sons of R
hodri were compelled themselves to become Alfred's men. The harmony betwe
en the brothers did not long survive their defeat. In 894 Anarawd, the ki
ng of Gwynedd, joined the English in a devastating inrode into Cadell's te
rritory, and burnt remorselessly all the houses and corn in Dyved and Ystr
ad Towy. Soon after Rhodri's death Cadell is said to have driven his broth
er Mervyn out of Powys and added it to his possessions; but as Mervyn cont
inued alive until 903, and was styled king of Powys, it is very improbab
le that a lasting conquest was effected. Anyhow, as Anarawd continued to r
eign in Gwynedd, Cadell certainly was not, as the 'Gwentian Brut' assert
s, thus made king over all Cymru. Indeed, it is quite probable that Anara
wd was the elder of the sons of Rhodri. Besides civil feuds and Saxon inva
sions the period of Cadell's reign was signalised by repeated invasio
ns of the 'black pagans,' as the Welsh called the Irish Danes, which culmi
nated in 906 in the destruction of St David's. Three years afterwards Cade
ll died. Threeof his sons are mentioned by the chronicles, Howel, Clydo
g, and Meurug. Of these the eldest became Cadell's successor, and was cele
brated as Howel Dda, the wisest and best of the Welsh kings. [Dictiona

General Notes: Husband - Rhodri Mawr Ap Merfyn Yr Mawr
Alias:<ALIA> Rhodri Mawr ap Merfyn yr Mawr Tywysog Deau /Cymru/
A ccording tolegend, the first Dinefwr Castle (right) was built by Rhod
ri Mawr - King of Wales in the 9th century. It is unavoidable that attenti
on should focus on those Welsh rulers who extended their power over mu
ch of Wales in the centuriesprior to the Norman conquest. They foreshadow
ed the attempts by the princes of Gwynedd in the 13th century to crea
te a unified Welsh state, and they matched contemporary developments in En
gland, and similar, but later, developments in Scotland. So, Rhodri Mawr (
844-78) is presented as one who set a patternfor the future. He either ru
led or, by his personal qualities, dominated much of Wales.
Chroniclers of his generation hailed Rhodri ap Merfyn as Rhodri Mawr (Rhod
ri the Great), a distinction bestowed upon two other rulers in the same ce
ntury - Charles the Great (Charlemagne, died 814) and Alfred the Great (di
ed 899). The three tributes are of a similar nature - recognition of the a
chievements of men who contributed significantly to the growth of stateho
odamong the nations of the Welsh, the Franks and the English. Unfortunate
ly, the entire evidence relating to the life of Rhodri consists of a few s
entences; yet he must have made a deep impression upon the Welsh, for in l
ater centuries being of the line of Rhodri was a primary qualification f
or their rulers.Until his death, Rhodri was acknowledged as ruler of mo
re than half of Wales, and that as much by diplomacy as by conquest.
Rhodri's fame sprang from hissuccess as a warrior. That success was not
ed by The Ulster Chronicle and by Sedulius Scottus, an Irish scholar at t
he court of the Emperor Charles the Bald at Liege. It was his victory ov
er the Vikings in 856 which brought him international acclaim. Wales was l
ess richly provided with fertile land and withthe navigable rivers that a
ttracted the Vikings, and the Welsh kings had considerable success in resi
sting them. Anglesey bore the brunt of the attacks, and it was there in 8
56 that Rhodri won his great victory over Horn, the leader of the Danes, m
uch to the delight of the Irish and the Franks.
It was not only from the west that the kingdom of Rhodri was threatene
d. By becoming the ruler of Powys, his mother's land, he inherited the o
ld struggle with the kingdom of Mercia. Although Offa's Dyke had been cons
tructed in order to define the territories of the Welsh and the English, t
his did not prevent the successors of Offa from attacking Wales. The press
ure on Powys continued; after 855, Rhodri was its defender, and he and h
is son, Gwriad, were killed in battle against the English in 878.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
------
Rhodri Mawr ('the Great') (c 877), king of Gwynedd, Powys, and Deheuba
rth; son of Merfyn Frych by Nest, daughter of Cadell ap Brochwel of Powy
s. He succeeded his father as king of Gwynedd in 844.In 855, on the dea
th of his uncle, Cyngen, he became king of Powys, and in 872, when Gwgo
n, king of Seisyllwg (Ceredigion and Ystrad Tywi) and brother tohis wif
e, Angharad, died, the southern realm came under his rule. There was th
us created for the first time a loose union of at least three major Wel
shprovinces, and though dissolved at Rhodri's death, this temporary assoc
iation gave birth to an aspiration which coloured the outlook of successi
ve generations of Rhodri's descendants as rulers of Deheubarth or Gwyne
dd down to the loss of Welsh independence. In his life-time Cymru was grav
ely menaced by theDanes, and evicence exists pointing to bold and vigoro
us leadership during this crisis. It would appear that he died in battle a
gainst the Saxons, leaving six sons of whom two became founders of mediev
al dynasties, Anarawd of the house of Aberffraw, and Cadell, father of Hyw
el Dda, of the house of Dinefwr.

[Dictiona

The Second Dynasty
850-877 Nest, the sister of Cyngen III, had married an upstart, Merfyn Fry
ch (Freckled), who gained control of Gwynedd. He was killed in battle, b
ut his son, Rhodri Mawr (=Great) gained control of Powys, too, andmo
st of the rest of Wales. Rhodri kept Gwynedd for himself and put his so
ns in charge of the other princedoms, Powys going to Merfyn for the time b
eing. He established that all princes should pay annual tribute to the pri
nce of Gwynedd. There was never a king of Wales, but Rhodri came neare
st to it. He also instructed his sons to wear in battle the Talaeth, a cir
clet of gold round the helmet, with upward-pointing teeth and set with pre
cious stones, ie. a crown. The princes of Powys continued this tradition t
ill 1283.
Most of Rhodri's fighting was against the Danes. He killed their leader, H
orn, but in 876had to seek safety in Ireland. Next year he returned, on
ly to be killed by the English.

James' father, Nathan (Maxon), was a loyalist who was a sergeant of the New Jersey Volunteers (from Monmouth County) 2nd 12 and 3rd 11 battalion. There is a land grant, dated June 14, 1786 on the Washademoak Lake in his name 13. James' mother's name was Phebe9 (last name unknown) and it is unknown whether she was a loyalist or born in New Brunswick. There is a probate record dated February 4, 1801 intestate (w/owill) where it says that she was a widow. So, it is assumed that shedied between 1800-1801. Nathan must have died between 1798-9 (James was born abt. 1799) and 1800.

Between the years 1851 and 1858 James moved his family from Wickham parish, Queens County to Fosterville, York County, New Brunswick. The family appears in the Queens County census of 1851 and is in the York County census in 1861. It is unclear how many of the children moved with him. Charles, Susannah, James Henry and George did move to Fosterville. Susannah and George show up on the 1861 census in York County with James and Lydia. Charles is also in this census in a separate household with his wife Elizabeth. James Henry died in 1858 and is buried in Fosterville beside his father.
After James passed away in 1869 Lydia moved in with her son George's family. She is listed in the census of 1871 and 1881 with his family.

Updated info from B Gregg by email on Jan 29, 2004 who writes, in part,:
George W. Maxan is my great-grandfather and my parents have possession of the family Bible that has the names and dates of his immediate family, including his parents and children, recorded by my great-grandmother (his wife), Margret (this is the spelling of her name in the Bible) Graham. Also, I have searched through the microfilm of the census of 1901, 1881, 1871, and 1861 in York County (Northlake/Canterbury districts) which confirms all of this information and includes some more.
His father, James Maxan died August 18, 1869 at age 70. (The census of 1861 indicates he was born in NB (1799)). He was married to Lydia (maiden name unknown) who died in February 26, 1883 at age 76. I had found his death in the provincial archives (online) and also in the Fosterville Cemetary (Upper Cemetary) which indicates that he must have had a son James H. who died at age 15 on February 23, 1858. (Their marker locations are side by side.)

John and Susan were among the earliest settlers in the close-knit Lincoln Creek farming community near Centralia, Washington. In the early 1880s, they moved to heavily-wooded Pacific county, Washington Territory, where John built the county's first lumber mill. They were widely regarded as one of the area's "founding families."
John Wright and Susan Jane has a total of nine Children, and today there are several hundred descendants of this pioneering couple scattered widely through out the Pacific Northwest, and beyond.

The ESSEX ANTIQUARIAN
Edited by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, The Essex Antiquarian
The Essex Antiquarian was published from 1897 to 1909 by Sidney Perley and George Francis Dow, both noted Essex County Genealogists and Historians. The purpose and accomplishments of the Antiquarian are best described in the words of Perley and Dow, as published in the final edition Vol. 13, No. 4, October 1909:
"The Essex Antiquarian was purposed to fill a want. It was designed to be a leader in scientific historical research; and to present copies or abstracts of records and compilations in an exhaustive and systematic manner, so that as far as the publication extended further investigation along those lines would be needless. Repeated examinations of records tend to their destruction, and thousands of dollars have been spent locally upon the same records for the same purpose by various persons who were ignorant of costly examinations made by others. This purpose, if prosecuted, would preserve the records and make further expenditure of money and labor unnecessary. This has been the particular reason of the appearance of the genealogies in alphabetical order, the gravestone inscriptions, abstracts of the Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files, old Norfolk county records, all wills in the order of their probate, Essex Gazette notes, abstracts of titles to land, etc., as shown in Salem, Haverhill, Ipswich and Marblehead in 1700, and in Georgetown and Topsfield in 1800. During the thirteen years of its existence there have been published in The Essex Antiquarian genealogies of all families from Abbe to Brown; all gravestone inscriptions dated prior to the year 1800 in Amesbury, Andover, Beverly, Boxford, Bradford, Danvers, Essex, Georgetown, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Haverhill and Ipswich; all wills proved in the county prior to June, 1666; the record of the Essex County Revolutionary soldiers and sailors alphabetically to Brown; abstracts of the old Norfolk records to 1675; Salem and Ipswich quarterly court records and files to 1659; and abstracts of all records in the first ten volumes of the Suffolk county registry of deeds relating to Essex county persons and property, where parties resided or property was located in Essex county, covering the period prior to 1678." The Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown
Thomas Bellows Wyman, The Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown -- in the County of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1629-1818, 2 vols. (Boston, MA: D. Clapp and Son, 1879 (reprinted by the New England History Press, 1982])
“A little over a hundred years have passed since the first publication of Thomas Bellows Wyman's The Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown in 1879. Its broad scope, the thoroughness of its scholarship and the meticulousness of its detail have made it an indispensable tool for the student of history, and the genealogist alike. It has continuously enjoyed the reputation of being one of the best and most accurate books of its type. Charlestown is particularly fortunate in that almost all of its early records have survived, despite the burning of the town by the British in 1775. What makes The Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown superior to most other works of its kind is that the author utilized not only obvious sources of information-town and church records-but other types of documents as well, particularly the deeds, and probate and court files of Middlesex County. For over thirty years Wyman collected material from many sources relating to Charlestown's inhabitants from its earliest settlement to 1818, carefully sifting them for their genealogical value. Correlating the facts from these sources and weighing the evidence in his typically impartial manner, he produced a book whose accuracy has stood up to a century of scrutiny. The result is a monumental genealogical compendium of all families and individuals for nearly the first two centuries of the town's existence. As one of the older settlements in New England, Charlestown is genealogically one of the most significant. Many well established families trace their beginnings to Charlestown. From this base people settled all over New England and beyond, and today thousands of Americans can trace lines of ancestry back to its early families. Thus, the book's importance reaches well beyond Charlestown's borders. In addition to being a "parent" town, Charlestown was a major seaport, attracting a constant stream of merchants, mariners and seamen, some of whom intermarried with the local populace and added to the blend of surnames. The most remarkable feature of the book is Wyman's complete lack of discrimination between the distinguished and less distinguished town residents. Most town histories written before or since typically devote most of their space to prominent individuals or families or those of long-standing residence while only mentioning briefly -- or omitting entirely -- the lesser lights. Wyman's method allowed for no such distinction. He was fond of saying that the persons and families eminent in social station or political preferment were sure of recognition in a thousand ways not open to their less fortunate neighbors, and that his aim had been to gather the scattered memorials of the many, rather than to write panegyrics on the few. The book's plan is straightforward, and the alphabetical arrangement of the genealogies does away with the need for a name index. For the larger families an index for the heads of each individual family group is provided at the beginning of the family sketch. Each sketch is divided into two parts: the genealogies and the estates. It is this latter section in which the author makes his most valuable contribution. By making these records readily available, the need to seek out the often inaccessible or deteriorating originals, is eliminated. Besides the genealogies and estates, several other features contribute to the book's usefulness. Among these arc the chronological schedule of conveyances to 1818, a schedule of the ancient colored inhabitants on record prior to 1800, and an 1818 map of the town, p. 1014.
