The following Biography is from:
Past and Present of DeKalb County, Illinois, Volume 2, By Lewis M. Gross, H. W. Fay, Pioneer Publishing, Chicago, 1907:
THOMAS McCORMICK
Thomas McCormick, who started out in life a poor boy when land and labor were cheap, and who has added to his possessions acre by acre until he has become one of the county's large landowners, is now living retired in the city of De Kalb, his labors in former years having made it possible for him to enjoy life without further recourse to business. A native of Ireland, he was born April 22, 1840, and was the third in a family of eight children, whose parents were Daniel and Mary (Farrel) McCormick, also natives of the Emerald isle, the former born in 1820 and the latter in 1815. They came to America in 1853, settling first at Chicago, where they remained for three years, after which they removed to De Kalb County and in December, 1856, took up their abode upon a farm in Clinton township. There they spent their remaining years. One of their sons, John McCormick, was a soldier of the Civil war. Both he and Thomas of this review, enlisted as members of Company E, One Hundred and Fifth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on the 13th of August, 1862, and remained members of that command until mustered out on the 7th of June, 1865. They participated in the battles of Resaca, Georgia, September 20, 1863, Kenesaw Mountain, Burnt Hickory, New Hope Church, Manhattan, Peach Tree Creek, and Atlanta. They later went with Sherman on the celebrated march to the sea and took part in an engagement at Savannah in the Carolina campaign, proceeding to Raleigh, North Carolina, thence to Richmond, Virginia, and on to Washington, D. C., where they took part in the grand review, the most celebrated military pageant ever seen in the western hemisphere. The brothers there received an honorable discharge and returned home.
Thomas McCormick was educated in the schools of Ireland and De Kalb County, being thirteen years of age when he came with his parents to America. After leaving school he worked by the month as a farm hand being thus employed for three years, when, desiring that his labors more directly benefit himself, he began the cultivation of rented land and was thus employed for four years. The Civil war then came on and he put aside all business and personal considerations in order to respond to his country's call. He went to the front where he remained for two years and ten months, and upon his return home he worked for his father on the home farm for two years. He then began farming on his own land, purchasing sixty acres in Clinton township, after which he purchased eighty acres in Shabbona Township and took up his abode thereon. Three years later he disposed of that property and bought one hundred and sixty acres in Victor Township, where he made his home for ten years, when he again sold out and also disposed of his first purchase of one hundred and sixty acres. His capital was then invested in two hundred and twenty acres in Shabbona Township and from time to time, he has bought more land, including a quarter section adjoining the farm of two hundred and twenty acres. He afterward bought one hundred and ninety acres more in the same township and later one hundred and sixty acres in De Kalb Township, while two years ago he purchased a house and two lots in the city of De Kalb. His property interests are now valuable, his landed possessions aggregating five hundred and seventy acres, which constitute a very desirable farm property.
Mr. McCormick was married in Aurora, Illinois, February 13, 1867, to Miss Margaret Grady, who was born in Ireland, September 22, 1844, and came to America with her parents when she was a child. Her father, Patrick Grady, was born in Ireland about 1815, while her mother Mrs. Bridget (Irving) Grady, was born in Ireland about 1825. They came to America in 1845 and located upon a farm near Belvidere, Illinois. There were twelve children in their family of whom Mrs. McCormick was the seventh, while six of this number are now deceased. For a time the Grady family lived in De Kalb County and later became residents of Butler County, Iowa, where the death of Mr. Grady occurred. His widow then returned to Illinois and made her home with her daughter Mrs. McCormick, until her death on the 16th of August, 1885.
Mr. and Mrs. McCormick have become the parents of eight children: Mary E., who was born November 10, 1868, and died September 20, 1870; Margaret, who was born April 4, 1870; Daniel J., born November 29, 1871, and died June 6, 1906; William J., born September 6, 1873; Mary E., born April 20, 1875, and died July 3, 1875; John E., born October 21, 1877, and died April 24, 1890; Edward J., who is a twin of John; and Thomas F., born September 20, 1881. There are also several grandchildren, and the children of Daniel J. McCormick are: Ruth I., who was born July 21, 1897; Florence M., who was born April 9, 1901; and Margaret L., born January 24, 1904. Edward M. also has a son Thomas Edward, born December 29, 1905.
Mr. McCormick maintains pleasant relations with his old army comrades through his membership in the Shabbona Post, No. 436, G. A. R. He exercises his right of franchise in support of the democracy and is a member of the Catholic Church, of which all his family are communicants. In the review of his life history, it will be seen that his success is attributable entirely to his own labors. Wages were small when he started out for himself in this country, but land was also cheap and he made his first purchase at a low figure. His prosperity is largely due to the fact that he has made judicious investments, being now most comfortably situated in life with valuable property interests to return to him a good living. He resolutely set to work when ambition was strongest and hopes were brightest and though he has led a busy life, he did not forget the duty he owed to the land of his adoption and put aside business cares when his country needed his aid, faithfully following the old flag upon southern battle-fields. Still enjoying the companionship of the wife of his youth, they are pleasantly located in a comfortable and attractive home of their own at No. 306 North Third street, De Kalb. Mrs. McCormick has indeed been a faithful companion and helpmate to her husband on the journey of life, being an excellent housekeeper and capable manager, and Mr. McCormick acknowledges his indebtedness to her assistance. Both are most highly esteemed people and it is with pleasure that we present this record of their life to our readers.

The McAuslanes are a sept of the Buchanan clan (which was originally named MacAusland). Descendants first settled in Resh, county Tyrone and later at Fruit Hill (CIA 1900 Drenagh) and now Limavady, between Londonderry and Coleraine in Co. Derry.
Family of Buchanan by Buchanan published 1723 Library of Scotland A.114.d.(9) pages 120-123
An Account of the MACAUSELANS
In regard the M'Aufelans are the only Sept, or Cadet of the Family of Buchanan, tho' of another Denomination, that have yet retained the ancient Surname by which the Family of Buchanan was denominated, I fhall therefore treat of thefe in the firft Place, as being the eldeft Cadets, and thofe of that Name in Scotland, and Ireland, complexly taken, of the beft Account of any other Cadets of that Family whence they derived their Origin. And tho' all the Evidents of any confiderable Antiquity which belonged to the Baron M'Aufelan, are long ago loft, fo that all that can be obtained for Illuftration of the Defcent of that Family, is a traditional Account of the Anceftor of the prefent Family of M'Aufelan's being a Second Son of one of the Anfelans, generally reputed to be the Firft of the Three fo named, and who firft acquired the Lands of Buchanan: Yet this Account, tho' the exact Time of the M'Aufelan's Defcent cannot be fo exactly known, is fully confirmed by the Evidents of the Family of Buchanan, by which it is clear to a Demonftration, that their Surname for diverfe Ages was M'Aufelan, before the Affumption of that of Buchanan, and that the Laird of Buchanan as alfo the Barons M'Aufelan in all Times thereafter owned the Defcent of that Sept of M'Aufelans to be as above related. There was indeed a groundlefs Pretence fometime made of the Baron M'Aufelan's being the elder Branch of the Family, feeing he ftill retained the ancient Surname, being of the fame Import with the like Pretenfions made by the Families of M'Arture, now Campbel, of Strachyr, and M'Pherfon of Cluny; the firft pretending to be defcended off the Family of Lochow, while Oduin, before the Affumption of Campbel, the other from that of M'Cattan, before that Family affumed the Surname of M'Intofh, and fo both the more ancient. But as thefe long ago, upon' juft Grounds, ceded their Pretenfions, fo alfo have the M'Aufelans. Their Eftate, by any of their Documents now extant, was never known to amount to more than the little Intereft of about Twenty Pounds Sterling of yearly Rent, poffeft by the late Baron M'Aufelan, which feems to have been the Patrimony given to the Firft of that Family, upon his Defcent off M'Aufelan Laird of Buchanan. Nor is the Suppofition lefs groundlefs, that Sir Alexander, defigned Macaufelan, a Knight of Lennox, who acquired the Addition to the Armorial Bearing of Buchanan at the Battle of Bauge, might probably have been Baron M'Aufelan, and not Buchanan; feeing the latter Surname was affumed fome confiderable Time before that Atchievement; but this Suppofition is ftill further frivolons upon diverfe Accounts, it not being probable, that a Perfon of fo little Intereft could be knighted in fuch early Times, while a great many of the beft Quality with Difficulty obtained that Honour, and if any of that Family had fo done, it is improbable, they would have allowed Buchanan to affume thefe Arms without the leaft Oppofition at any Time thereafter. It is alfo evident that the Lairds of Buchanan ufed, and were defigned by the Surname of M'Aufelan upon diverfe Occafions, for a long Time after the Affumption of Buchanan; as for Inftance in a Charter by the Earl of Lennox to Finlay Campfy, of a part of the Lands fo named, to which Maurice Laird of Buchanan is Witnefs by Defignation of M'Aufelan, tho' Grandchild to Gilbert, who firft affumed Buchanan. So that it's no Matter of Admiration, that the Monks of Plufcarden, who relate the Adventure of Sir Alexander, and living at fuch vaft Diftance from the Place of his Refidence, might happen to defign him by his ancient Surname, and beft known to them, rather than by one fo lately affumed.
The Firft of thefe M'Aufelans I could find upon Record, is Malcolm M'Aufelan, inferted Witnefs in a Charter by Malcolm Earl of Lennox of the Lands of Lufs, in Favour of John Laird thereof, in the Reign of K. Alexander III. This Malcolm (tho' few or none in thefe old Charters are fully defigned) feems to have been Baron M'Aufelan, the Lairds of Buchanan having generally difufed that of M'Aufelan before the Date of this Charter. I find no more thefe recorded, but a traditional Account of one M'Beth Baron M'Aufelan, a Perfon of uncommon Stature and Strength, who lived in King Robert the Third's Time, and feems to have been Contemporary with Sir Alexander M'Aufelan, or Buchanan, which makes the Suppofition already mentioned the more improbable; Alexander, laft Baron M'Aufelan, having only One Daughter, who was married to a Gentleman of the Name of Campbel, after whofe Death fhe fold her Intereft to Sir Humphrey Colchoun of Lufs, her Superior. The Remainder of the Scotifh M'Aufelans refide moftly in Lennox, but the greateft Number and of beft Account of that Name refide in the Counties of Tyrone, Derry and Down in the North of Ireland. The Anceftors of the principal Men of thefe laft were Andrew, and John M'Aufelans, Sons of the Baron M'Aufelan, who went out of the Paroch of Lufs to that Kingdom, in the latter Part of the Reign of King James VI. This Andrew had a son called Alexander, upon whom he beftowed good Education, by which Means becoming a prudent Active Gentleman, he obtained a Commiffion in the Army in Time of the Civil Wars in the Reign of K. Charles I. At the End of thofe Wars, partly by Debenture, partly by Purchafe, he acquired the Eftates of Refh, and Ardftraw in the County of Tyrone. He had Two Sons, the Eldeft whereof Oliver of Refh was one of the moft fufficient Gentleman in thefe Parts of that Kingdom. In the Year 1698, he was High-Sheriff of that County, and influenced moft of his own Name throughout the Country to fettle in and near his own Eftate, which at firft fcarce amounting to 500 Pound Sterling of yearly Rent, he encreafed in fuch a Manner as to leave to his Son a clear Eftate of 1500 Lib. Per Annum. He was Twice married, and left by both a numerous Iffue. His Succeffor hath a Lodging in a little Town called Strabane, where he ordinarly refides, and for which Place he ferves as Member of Parliament, as his Father did for many Years. Oliver's Brother is called Andrew, having an Eftate called Ardocheyl, who and a great many others of good Circumftances of the Name of M'Aufelan refide in the Counties already mentioned.
