No records of any Caprons have been found in Cheshire, England. There are numerous Caprons in Devon and several in Somerset. Also there are several Callenders in Devon including an Elizabeth born 1661 dau. of John. Have not made positive ID on this Elizabeth but believe her to be Banfield's wife. Therefore I believe the Holden book to be wrong in stating Banfield was from "...the north of England near Wales." and a more accurate statement to be "...the north of Devon(shire) near Wales."

Fred Raymond Calligan
Death Claims Noted Mason
Fred R. Calligan, known to Masons throughout the Northwest for many years as an almoner of the Scottish Rite, died Thursday at his home. He was 85 years old. A former gold miner in Alaska, he sold out his claim and retired in 1940 returning to Tacoma.
Born in Princeton, Maine, he came to Tacoma in 1889 when he was 21. He got a job with the Northern Pacific and in 1891 brought his sweetheart from Maine to Tacoma. They were married here on July 26, 1891. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1941 and Mrs. Calligan died six months afterward.
Calligan quit the railroad in 1894 and went into business with Fred Glass. They opened the Imperial Market at 323 East 26th St. The market did well but Calligan got the gold fever during the Klondike gold rush. In 1900 he and his wife left for Alaska. He staked out a claim near Dawson. He and his partners worked it for 10 years living all that time in cabins they had built.
Calligan sold out his interests in 1910 and he and his wife returned to Tacoma. He bought a Puyallup Valley berry ranch which he held until about five years ago.
Since 1922 he kept busy dispensing the charities of the Scottish Rite bodies of Masonry in Tacoma. He was long active in Masonic circles. He took his Scottish Rite degree in May 1910; was invested as a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor in October 1919 and was corinated as a 33rd degree Mason, the highest rank attainable in February 1924.
He was honored for his youth work in 1946 when the Scottish Rite bodies built a $7,500 lodge for boys and designated it the Fred R. Calligan Lodge.
He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Neicey Ellsemore [Lizzie Berenice], of Bangor Maine, Mrs. Fanny E. Ellsemore, Waltham, Mass., and Mrs. Gertrude Shaw of Princeton, Maine, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be announces by the Buckley-King Co.

Calligan Dug More Than Gold In Yukon
Cherishes Relics Of Klondike
by Paul W. Harvey
"Gold Mining is nothing but hard work. Plenty of greenhorns found fortunes in the Klondike because they were willing to toil."
That is the opinion of Fred R. Calligan, 4637 S. L St., who ought to know. He spent ten years of the hardest kind of labor in the Yukon. He had never seen a mining operation until he arrived in Dawson, and he dug out enough gold to enable him and his wife to live the kind of a life that appealed to them for the rest of their days.
Yes, this grizzled gold miner, with his penetrating eyes and his quizzical smile, toiled and toiled for the precious metal for a decade but it hurt him not at all. At 79, he is alert and active, and by no means lives a life of ease with his hands folded in his lap.
Has Fine Unpaid Job
He now keeps busy at what he regards as one of the finest unpaid jobs that any man could have. He enjoys what he esteems as the high privilege of dispensing the considerable charities of the Scottish Rite bodies of Masonary in Tacoma. For 25 years, he has been the almoner of the Scottish Rite. During that time, he has given out many thousands of dollars, has relieved hundreds of people, has investigated hundreds of cases.
He is especially happy that with Scottish Rite money he has enabled numerous Tacoma boys and girls to complete their high school educations. Relief he has dispensed has by no means been confined to members of the Masonic fraternity. Food, clothing and money have gone to all worthy cases that have been called to his attention and that have passed the muster of his rigid investigation. No one except himself knows just how much money he has used, as he makes no reports to the Scottish Rite. This prevents embarrassment to those who receive assistance.
"My job is the most satisfactory work any man could imagine for himself," Fred says. "It has been a pleasure. I still find opportunity to do a lot of good, despite the fact that the government, through its old age pensions and other social activities, does a lot of the work the Scottish Rite formerly assumed."
Came To Tacoma In 1889
Fred came to Tacoma in 1889. He was 21 years old, and possessed of strength and courage acquired in Maine, where he was born, and where he early learned how to work hard. He got a job with the Northern Pacific and, in 1891, brought his sweetheart from Maine to Tacoma and married her here on July 26, 1891. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1941 and Mrs. Calligan died six months after that observation.
"Back in Maine you really learned how to work when I was a boy," Fred remembers. "You know we had to pry up the sun every morning, so the rest of the nation could live."
Fred went out on strike with other Northern Pacific employees in 1894 and he decided then and there that he would quit the railroad. Times were bad, but he decided to go into business. He and Frank Glass, still a Tacoma resident, opened the Imperial Market, which still operates at 323 E. 26th St.
The market did pretty well, especially as better times returned, but the Klondike gold bug got into Fred's veins, and his fever steadily mounted. It finally reached such a pitch that there was only one thing to do. So in January 1900, Fred and his wife, his two brothers and the wife of one brother, left Tacoma by steamer for Skagway.
They took with them 13 dogs, three sleds and a great store of provisions. They had expected to take the train from Skagway to Whitehorse, but they found it stalled by cold and snow, with so much freight ahead of them that they would have had to wait their turn for several weeks.
Make Fearful Trip on Trail
So they decided to drive their dogs the 125 miles to Whitehorse. This was an ordeal, even for experienced mushers, and doubly so for men going into the Klondike for the first time. One day, they made only a mile and half up Chilkoot pass, and in places they had to cut footholds in the ice, while they looked into the gorge below and saw the bodies of numerous mules and horses that had plunged to their deaths. But they reached Whitehorse in a week.
They they went across Lake LaBarge and headed for the Yukon river. On the way, the feet of their dogs became so sore, they had to fashion tiny moccasins for them. They reached the Yukon river at Carmacks and then traveled on the river ice to Dawson, where they arrived near the end of April.
They found Dawson a rip-roaring mining camp, with thousands of miners making the welkin [?] ring! Fred and his partners managed to get a claim on Lovet Gulch, four miles from Dawson, and all old Yukon men know that Lovet Gulch was in the big money.
Then the hard work began. They heated rocks and built wood fires to thaw the ground, and later acquired a boiler and used steam for this purpose. They drove a tunnel 1,000 feet into the hill along bedrock and drove drifts from the tunnel in all directions. All this tunneling had to be supported with props and it was a laborious task day in and day out. But the work was made lighter by the fact that gold in fair amounts was found.
Work Claim 10 Years
Fred and his partners, and the men they hired, also worked the creek and drove shafts 84 feet to bedrock there. They worked the claim for 10 years and lived upon it all that time in cabins they built. They had a perfect cold storage plant in their tunnel and there they kept their meats, fruits and vegetables. The temperature was a steady 28 degrees, and even potatoes were kept in perfect condition for as long as three years.
Fred mined more than gold from the tunnel. The claim was evidently the bottom of a former ancient lake, and he took from it bones of animals, all the way from the great tusks of mastondons to the skeleton of a mouse. He gave many of the best mastodon tusks to an artist in ivory in Dawson, and had many articles made from them, including a hndsome ivory replica of his claim and part of his mining operation.
The Calligan home is filled with relics including a mastodon _____ that weights eight pounds, handiwork of Indians and curios of interest.
Back To Tacoma In 1910
Fred sold his claim in 1910. Later the Guggenheims acquired and "hydraulicked" it, along with other claims in Lovet Gulch. Mr. and Mrs. Calligan returned to Tacoma in November, 1910, and bought a Puyallup Valley berry ranch and other property, all of which he recently sold.
He looked after the berry ranch, but his main "occupation" for 37 years has been Masonry. He was captain of the Shrine patrol for five years and for more than 30 years has been stage director in charge of all paraphernalia and costumes for the Scottish Rite. He was given the 33rd degree honorary in 1924 for his devoted work in the Rite.
He was also honored last August, when the Tacoma DeMolay boys' camp on Fox Island was named for him. The Scottish Rite bodies recently erected a $7,500 lodge for the boys and it has been designated the Fred R. Calligan lodge. He was "dad" for the DeMolays for 12 years, and in 1927 conceived the idea of obtaining three and a half acres on Fox Island for use of the group. The late Frank D. Oakley and others purchased the site as a picnic ground for the boys for a nominal sum. One-third interest in the Fox Island sand spit, one of the best bathing spots on Puget Sound, goes with the property. The lodge includes cooking and sleeping facilities and is espected to be widely used by the DeMolays of Tacoma in the future.
Fred still lives in his home of so many years on S. L St. One of his DeMolay "boys," Harold F. Peters, and Mrs. Peters, live with him on the same status as son and daughter. "Harold had no father of his own and so he 'adopted' me as his dad," Fred says. "It's a wonderful arrangement for me. In fact, as I look back, I have had a wonderful life all the way and I wouldn't trade it for any other life I know about."

Oconto County Reporter (WI) 22 Aug 1907
Mrs. Calligan Is Dead
Passed Away Monday Morning, Aged 86 Years
Came to Oconto Nearly Forty Years Ago
Mrs. Rachael Calligan, an old and much respected resident of this city, passed away at her home in the East ward at twenty minutes to two Monday morning [19 Aug 1907], aged 86 years.
Deceased, whose maiden name was Rachael Robinson, was born in Machiasport, Maine, Aug. 6, 1821 and with her children, came to this city in 1868, her husband, Hollis Calligan, who was a sea captain and made voyages from Maine to the West Indies, having passed away with yellow fever on the Island of San Dominge four years previous.
Deceased never fully recovered from a sick spell she had about four years ago and had been gradually failing until the end came. She was a great sufferer, especially the last five weeks, during which time she was confined to the bed, not knowing a minute's relief until her demise.
She is survived by one son, Tim Calligan and five daughters, Mrs. Mary Calligan, Mrs. T. H. Calligan, Mrs. J. P. Dorr, Mrs. Joseph Ryan and Miss Clara Calligan, all of whom reside in the city, with the exception of Mrs. T. H. Calligan and Mrs. J. P. Dorr, who reside in Maine.
Perhaps no one woman in the city was so well and favorably known by both young and old, as was Mrs. Calligan, for her many acts of kindness and sympathy, always ready to lend a helping hand. Although old in years, she was always happy when with the young and will be greatly missed by them, as well as others.
The funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Methodist church, Rev. J. T. Fish officiating, and the remains conveyed to their last resting place in Evergreen cemetery. The pallbearers were her five grandsons, Frank and George Calligan, William and Edward Ryan, Henry Nineway and Henry Youngs.
Those from out of the city who were present at the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nineway of Green Bay, Joseph Ryan and son, William of Nahma, Mich., and Frank W. Calligan of Norway Mich.

Conan Meriadoc,
'King' of Dumnonia & Brittany
(Born c.AD 305)
(Welsh: Cynan; Latin: Conanus; English: Conan)
Conan was the son of Octavius the Old's brother, Gerontius, (or Octavius h

sula had her heart set on a life devoted only to God. She agreed to the ma
rriage, on the condition that she first be allowed to go on a pilgrimage t
hroughout Europe. Conan appears to have joined her in Rome, where the t
wo must have been married, probably by Pope Cyriacus himself. He apparent
ly did not travel to Cologne where Ursula died. In later years, he gain

w. The Governorship of Armorica & Dumnonia was united for only a short tim

trol of each region fell to the sons of his two marriages, Gadeon and G

! See notes of father. The FGRA sheet had no marriage date and only the name 'Anne' as spouse. Janet Pease's sheet had both spouses, the first Margaret Calvert with date of marriage, the second with no date and only the name Anne. 'Ancestors of Annis Spear' had both spouses but no surname for Margaret and date of only the second marriage. It says he was aprenticed on 19 Nov 1613 to James Smith of the Drapers Company, London, and was granted his freedom on 1 Dec 1620.' It also gave much information about his will. The Society paper gave both marriages but no day for the second one which it says was by license. First marriage is in the IGI, form 7932032 93 film 1260626. Several other entries and several for 2nd marriage, no source available. LDS proxy temple ordinances are on the FGRA sheet and proxy sealing of the marriage is in the IGI.

PRESQUE ISLE - Malcolm K. Dempsey, a proud and loving husband and father passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the Presque Isle Rehab and Nursing Center at the age of 90. Malcolm was born in Presque Isle on July 17, 1923 the son of Milford and Elizabeth (Cyr) Dempsey. After many years living in other places, he returned to Maine for his final days to spend with his longtime friend and current wife. He was proud of his Maine heritage and welcomed everyone with his bright smile, hand shake and famous saying "Keep Maine Green"."He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." - Psalm 91 An avid churchgoer, Malcolm believed in the miracles God would provide. He served through his dedication to the Catholic Church for many years as an Eucharistic minister and altar server. He attended mass daily, as his health permitted. "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give" - Churchill. Malcolm lived his life a by a simple rule, make others happy. He was always quick with a joke, or a helping hand. Malcolm loved life and loved people and loved to tease. He was a true gentleman, always holding the door for lines of people. He loved all sports and was a decorated athlete. A well-known Class of '42 Presque Isle High School cross country runner, Malcolm had recently been honored by the induction into the Presque Isle High School Hall of Fame. He would dance or play golf any chance he had. He also very proudly served his country in the Army as a World War II Veteran. While he will be missed by those left behind, Malcolm is beginning a new adventure forward...one he has prepared for and embraced. Malcolm is survived in life by his lovely wife, Wilma Cambridge Dempsey of Presque Isle, ME, his 3 children and their spouses, Joe and Nancy Dempsey of Lyman, ME, Anne Dempsey and Kevin Kearns of Westford, MA, and Patrick and Bonny Dempsey of Washington, DC, his 7 grandchildren; Chris Dempsey, Heidi Dempsey, Malcolm Kearns, Duncan Kearns, Danielle Miller, Megan Medina, and Samantha Dempsey, as well as his 3 great grandchildren, Taylor, Ayden and Genevieve. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wives, Mary (Kidney) Dempsey and Alice LeMay, and his brother, Robert Dempsey.
