Duncan Chisholm wrote:
01 Oct 2002 - Article No. 28 by the Annalist (Sir Joseph Chisholm), found at the Antigonish Heritage Museum, stated that Alexander Breac (freckled) was born at Glen Affric and fought at Culloden. He was renowned for his strength and on his way off the field at Culloden saved the life of one of the Highland Chieftains, who was defending himself against two English Troopers. Alexander killed them both. Later he assisted Prince Charles and was one of the renowned seven men of Glenmoriston. In parting, the Prince shook his hand, and never again did Alexander offer his right hand to anyone. Young men at Church on Sunday often endeavoured to induce him to shake hands in the ordinary manner, but he invariably gave his left hand.
This same Article stated that Alexander harboured a Priest during the times of persecution and that he had a brother John who was one of the most famous Pipers in Scotland.
"Breac" was not inserted in his name in order to prevent confusion with his son, Alexander "Breac" Chisholm.

General Notes: Child - Alexander Breac Chisholm
In The Article by the Annalist (Sir Joseph Chisholm) that appeared in The Casket on Thursday, May 21, 1936 it quoted Father John J. Chisholm, who wrote that he was called "Breac" or "Breacahd", meaning freckled. He was born and brought up in one of the small glens of Strathglass called the "Deag" from the fact that the creek that ran through this glen ran dry during the Summer time.
Alexander Breac was twice married, first to a Miss MacDonald, who died shortly after a child-birth, and secondly to Ms. Ann McSwein who bore him eight sons and one daughter. Ann McSwein was a woman of low statue and slemder, yet she was commonly known as the mother of heroes from the fact that nearly all her sons were uncommongly large and powerful men.
The daughter, Catherine, came to Nova Scotia and married John Chisholm (Gow) and was the mother of John Chisholm (Gentleman) and the paternal grandmother of Hon. William Chisholm, Halifax. member of the Legislative Council.
The sons were:
1. Donald (Mor);
2. James (Mor);
3. Rory (Mor);
4. Colin (Mor;
5. Alexander (Mor);
6. Kenneth;
7. Archibald; and,
8. John.
Most of Alexander Breac's family came to America. Kenneth (Mor) settled in Albany, North Carolina, but when the American Revolution broke out, as a Loyalist he espoused and fought on the British side. When peace was declared, his property was confiscated and he [left] the United States and settled in Glengarry in Upper Canada, now the province of Ontario. His home was in the parish of St. Andrew. Some of his sons moved up the country and settled in Brampton, not far from Toronto. One was Kenneth Chisholm, who represented the County of Peel in the Ontario Legislature. According to Father John C. Chisholm, Alexander Breac's widow came to America and lived until her death with her son Donald Mor, father of Alexander M. Chisholm, and with her son John Chisholm (Doun). She died at Antigonish Harbour and is buried at the Lower South River. Donald Mor, he says, came to the Harbour in 1801.
John (Doun) sailed for America in 1811, but when the ship was in mid-ocean the captain decided to return. John protested and was the only one to refuse to sign a petition of the captain. They were landed at Oban. The old man lost his passage, his money --- some 115 pounds --- and had to work some years to earn enough to come to America. He had the captain arrested but he never recovered his money. He arrived at Little River, Pomquette Harbour, in 1818. He was the grandfather of three clergymen already mentioned to whom Annalist is indebted for the information given herein.
Archibald Chisholm came out in 1801 and settled at Manchester Road, now Marydale. He left numerous descendants, William Chisholm, J.P., being a son.
James Chisholm (Mor) settled at the Lower South River and was the father of Donald Chisholm, M.P., for New Westminster for some years.
Roderick Chisholm (Mor) also settled at the Lower South River and was the grandfather of Rev. Archibald J. Chisholm, P.P., St. Andrew's.
Alexander Chisholm (Mor) settled at Manchester Road and was the grandfather of the late Alexander Chisholm ("Wallace").
Colin Chisholm also settled at Manchester Road and was the grandfather of the late Alexander Chisholm ("Flexie").
It is said that an elder half-brother William, the issue of Alexander Breac's first marriage was a sea captain, went to the States and engaged in the work of suppressing piracy.
Donald Chisholm (Mor), as already stated was the father of the mathematician. These men were typical Highland pioneers. With small material resources they faced the world, made homes for themselves in what was then the wilderness and brought up and so far as the opportunities of the times permitted, educated large families. A noted English writer said that these early Canadian pioneers were the real heroes of our country, performing as they did bravely and quietly and with small hope of any great material reward the simple but necessary duties of good law-abiding citizens.

General Notes: Wife - Ann McSwein
In the Article by the Annalist written in the Casket on My 21, 1936 she was described as a woman of low stature and slender, yet she was commonly known as the mother of heroes from the fact that nearly all her sons were uncommonly large and powerful men. She came to Canada around 1803 and lived with her sons; Donald "Mor" and John "Donn". She was buried at Lower South River but her Headstone has never been found.

Subject: Donald "mor"
Hi Terry,
This is part of a posting I had made on Rootsweb, with a few further additions. I saw that you did not have this information on Donald mor (21285)
John 'Donn"s brother Donald "Mor" b 1762 d 1843 (m Margaret Grant) had a son Rev John b 1800 d1834 who was pastor of Mabou. His sister Anne married Alexander "Pioneer Colin" Chisholm. The genealogies are wrong when they claim Donald had only 2 children. In addition to John and Anne, he had Colin, Alexander "Sandy Mor" b 1788 (inventor of the Chisholm Mathematical Rule) d1876, Ellen b1796 d 1893 Judique who married Colin "Ban" Chisholm, Catherine b 1812 d 1865 married Alexander "Miller" Chisholm, and Margaret b~1805 d 1903 who married John McRae. They are also wrong in that Donald is a son of Alexander "Breac" Chisholm and Anne McSwein
Regards,
Dan
He sailed in June 1803 on the "Aurora of Glasgow" with Donald "Og" Chisholm.

The following was in "History of Inverness County, Nova Scotia Chapter XI - District of Judique"
CHISHOLMS.
The original seat of the Chisholms in Scotland was Roxburghshire. John de Chisholm, the first of the name known in history is mentioned in an official document dated A. D. 1254. The Chisholms occupy a prominent place in the ecclesiastical history of Scotland.
As already stated the Pioneer Chisholms at Long Point, Judique, were Alexander (Colin's son), William and Colin (Rory's sons) and the brothers Alexander Ban and John Ban. They emigrated from Strathglas, Scotland, in the ship "Aurora" in 1801, remaining on the mainland, Nova Scotia, until 1802 when on the advise of Father MacEachen (afterwards Bishop MacEachen of P. E. Island) they settled at Long Point. They were sturdy and skilful workers and in a short time made for themselves comfortable homes. As soon as, possible they established a school. They built grist and saw mills and their community was a prosperous one.
Pioneer Alexander Chisholm (Colin) was killed by a falling tree. He was the first person buried in the old grave yard, Long Point. Over his remains was mournfully sprinkled consecrated earth brought by the pioneers from Strathglas. He left two sons Alexander and Colin and several daughters. Reverend D. J. MacDonald, M.A., St. F. X. College, is a grandson of one of his daughters. His daughter, Ellen, married Duncan Grant, a native of Glenmoriston, Scotland, with issue: Allan, Alexander, Angus, Patrick, William, Donald, Christina, Catherine, Mary and Ellen (Mrs. Roderick MacNeil). Alexander (Colin's) daughter, Isabel, married John MacEachen, son of John Gow. Alexander son of Alexander (Colin) had four sons, William, Alexander, John and Neil (New Town) and two daughters Margaret and Janet all of whom married and left families excepting Alexander and Janet.
Alexander (Colin) son Colin had issue William, John, Archibald, Alexander, Ellen, Kate, Ann Janet, Margaret and Christina.
Alexander, pioneer, had a brother Archibald at Lismore who married Anne, sister of the late Father Alexander MacDonnell, P.P. Judique. Their daughter Catherine married Alexander Chisholm (John Donn), Stonehouse, Heatherton. The noble Father Archibald Chisholm P. P. Judique, already referred to, who celebrated his golden jubilee in 1921 is a son of Alexander (John Donn). Another son was the peerless Father John Chisholm whose benevolent disposition, dignified manner and stately figure are well remembered by the older people of Margaree where he was parish priest for a number of years.

Before rennovations were carried out, his headstone was one of the few still standing, amongst the brush that had grown over this graveyard. In 1999 the surface had been levelled and headstones placed to one side. His headstone was inscribed with his date of death; Apr. 27, 1885, age 84. All headstones have been since returned to their proper locations and the resurfacing resulted in a well maintained graveyard.

In Reply to: Re: "Gobha" Chisholms by Jolene Chisholm of 1565
Thanks Jolene - A photo would be great!
I've found the line of descent I was looking for:
Hugh MacDonell and Mary Chisholm - Knockfin - had three children;
Alexander, b. 1782, who became the first Scottish priest in Judique, Duncan & Anne. It has been suggested that they MIGHT have been cousins to Rev. William Chisholm, son of your Donald "Gobha" - ???
Anne married an Archie Chisholm - they had a daughter Catherine who married Alexander Chisholm - two of their children were Rev. John J. and Rev. Archie.
I don't have any details except for a bit on Rev. Alexander MacDonell ...and the suggested link to Donald "Gobha" seems a bit tenuous - but perhaps you know more.
Alastair

Duncan Chisholm wrote:
01 Oct 2002 - The name Paul Chisholm was found in an Article by Alister MacDonald, Inverness ("Gleannach"), entitled "The Seven Men of Glenmoriston", which was based on a work called "Voices from the Hills" ("Guthan o na Beann Taibh"). On pages 264 - 269 the seven men who protected "Bonnie Prince Charlie" were noted as:
- Patrick Grant of Craskie
- Alexander MacDonald of Aonach
- Hugh, Alexander and Donald Chisholm, sons of Paul Chisholm in Blairidh
- John MacDonald or Campbell in Craskie
- Grigor MacGregor, a deserter from the Earl of Louden's Regiment
The above noted information was provided Duncan J. Chisholm by Terry Chisholm who found it at Queen's University, Belfast, <csg0070@queens-belfast.ac.uk>.
Reportedly the seven men went "on the run" from the marauding Redcoats after the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and had a base at a cave called "Leac Ruiridh" in Coire Dodha in Upper Glenmoriston. In the course of his attempts to elude the Redcoats and escape to France, "Bonnie Prince Charlie" (Te'rlach Rg) was looked after for some 3 weeks by the seven, first in Glenmoriston and then in Strathglass. Some French Officers were reported to have landed at Poolewe and were heading for Lochiel's Country, so the seven brought Te'rlach there and returned to Glenmoriston. They received 3 Guineas each for their services despite there being a 30,000 English Pounds reward for Te'rlach's head. The black pot used by the party for cooking meat for the Prince is now in Glenmoriston House. The Prince escaped to France one month later.
When preparing this Chisholm Family Tree it was noted by Duncan J. Chisholm and the co-author, Roderick Chisholm, formerly of Meadow Green in Antigonish County but now from Hamilton, Ontario, that the name Paul rarely appeared amongst his descendants.

General Notes: Child - Hugh Chisholm
Duncan Chisholm wrote:
30 Sep 2002 - Hugh was one of the seven men of Glenmoriston who shielded Bonnie Prince Charlie after Culloden and then guided him to the Coast of Arisaig. Hugh went to live in Edinburgh afterwards where he knew Sir Walter Scott personally, and who provided some interesting details about Hugh in "Tales of a Grandfather". After taking farewell of the Prince, Hugh never offered his right hand again to anyone.
In "Tales of a Grandfather" Sir Walter Scott quoted Hugh as saying that when the Prince first came near them after Culloden, they knew him and fell on their knees. He had a Bonnet on his head, a wretched yellow wig, and a clouted handerchief, a Stirling Tartan Waistcoat much worn, a pretty good belted Tartan Hose, and Highland Brogues tied with throngs, so much worn, they would scarcely stick upon his feet. His shirt (and he had not another) was of the colour of saffron.
Sir Walter Scott, when at University subscribed with others to a small annuity which was sufficient to render Hugh comfortable. He died in Strathglass sometime subsequent to 1812. Hugh was a noble commanding figure of six feet and upwards, had a very stately demeanour and always wore the Highland Garb. Hugh had some peculiar customs and notions. He kept his right hand usually in his bosom, as if worthy of more care than the rest of his person, because Charles Edward had shaken hands with him when they separated.
Donald "Og" Chisholm made mention of Hugh in his notes but added the name MacLea in brackets after his name for some reason.
In 1832 the Chisholms in Ontario presented an Address to the Chief of the Chisholms which was signed by Hugh's grandson Donald (and many other Ontario Chisholms) and included a reference to Hugh as Hugh (McPhaul) Chisholm. In retrospect this makes sense as he was a son of Paul Chisholm. The address also stated that Hugh's Sword was in the possession of Dr. Stewart Chisholm (see Medlam Chart 29). There was a reference in this Address to Hugh being the "Hero of Corrigho" which requires explanation.
